    Actually, for me, the extra polyhedral dice are one of the best features of D&D. I'll likely house rule variable weapon damage and hit dice into my White Box game:). But I'm totally stoked for all this content in one book. As for the racial/heritage classes, in some cases these are unique, like Dwarven Battle Priests.

    I'm definitely interested in Gary Gygax's works post TSR, mainly anything that isnt dnd at this point. It's too bad these old products can't be brought back to life through print and play. It seems Drive Thru RPG has shown it is a viable business model.

    Loved it now I am hoping for videos on how to help the RPG player who is blind and yet homebound as well. Which I have in my player group. He has never played 5th Edition D&D only older versions that use the OSR theater of the mind. But distance and ranges in 5th is more codified. How do I work around that when they can't play in person and only via video chat format?

    For initiative cards, rotating different directions for different moves (or upside down for both) is extremely clunky. What about simply rotating 90 degrees (direction doesn't matter) after using a fast action, and flipping the card over to hide the number after using a slow action? If you've used your slow action you won't be needing to reference your initiative number for the rest of the combat round anyway.

  • @LadySapling
    @LadySapling Рік тому

    Interesting idea! Here's what I'd do, I think: 1. Multiply it by half your level but rounded up. So every odd level you add another die. 2. Give it to all classes, but scale it with the type of hit die they have. So a magic user might deal 3d4 points of damage with their staff at level 5, but fighters would be dealing 3d8! Depending on how your thief class worked (d4 hit die? backstab rules?) you might have to tweak their sneak attack mechanic a bit to work around this system in an elegant manner. For example the thief might treat dice as if they all rolled their highest number or something like that on a backstab. I think that might be pretty cool! I'm not too worried about damage-dealing spells becoming a bit weaker, blasting is recreation only anyway except for when it has other properties that work well for the situation (like large areas or debuffs). And this'd actually make it more fun to bonk things as a wizard, like Gandalf would.

    • @rpgsandmore7550
      @rpgsandmore7550 Рік тому

      That’s a pretty cool idea too! Thank you for sharing it. Another thought could be linking it to a class’s BHB. So, when your BHB goes up you also get an extra die.

  • @Drudenfusz
    @Drudenfusz Рік тому

    I am not really playing OSR games, but this sounds like spell casters become pretty much pointless, at least the damage spells. Or do you count spells then also as weapons and apply the same logic there? And if healing would not also increase the same way, then it would be a bad decision to waste time on healing, when instead you could damage the opponent. The longer I think about it the worse I feel this is. Combat would sure be faster, but it would be boring as hell, since weapon attacks would always the best choice. No tactics required.

    • @rpgsandmore7550
      @rpgsandmore7550 Рік тому

      These are great questions. As far is I’ve thought this out I wouldn’t modify spell damage or healing. This is because spell damage, especially for high level spells, is already pretty high and often effects multiple opponents. This house rule would only effect one attack per character per turn, and those attacks still have to hit. Where as the spells are often automatic hits with only a saving throw. I think it should make Magic less powerful, sure, but magic maintains an important advantage in combat without becoming the consistent show stealer. Healing: I hadn’t thought too deeply about healing magic. I’ll spend some more time thinking about this. Thanks for the feedback.

    • @Drudenfusz
      @Drudenfusz Рік тому

      @@rpgsandmore7550 I don't think that magic will remain that important. Maybe the highest spell slots, but it would be completely insane to cast a level 1 spell as level 7 Wizard and not bash opponent with your staff. But play test it, and tell me then how it worked out, and what balance issues also had been there that I did not think about, I am sure there are plenty.

  • @MykeDiemart

      I can see using this for fighters and replacing the usual Combat Machine ability. You are right about the quick deaths. The thought is that this would encourage careful planning instead of resorting to combat at higher levels due to overconfidence. It might be over-correcting for that.

    A bit of an off topic question for everyone: I'm interested in playing a TTRPG where the players are all immortal humans that have existed for centuries (but not vampires or gods). I always liked how, in movies and comics, this premise would explore themes of humanity. I was also recently inspired by the movie Old Guard. Ive though about multiple problems this setting can cause for TTRPG (no feeling of danger, boring combat, etc.) and i believe I have interesting solutions for most but one thing I am not sure how to fix is how to do character progression. If you already start out at "high level" with centuries worth of skills and attribute training, what is one or two sessions going to offer that is interesting for the player to develop?

    • @johnedgar7956
      @johnedgar7956 Рік тому

      Interesting idea. You could always say that the players simply "don't age", but are still entirely susceptible to injuries, poisons, exotic plagues (but not likely the "common" earthly ones, as they will have survived those), and who's to say that they don't have immoral "rivals" with similar gifts, or perhaps face some supernatural or eldritch menace throughout the ages? Those would certainly be a frightening threat. They could have knowledge of LONG forgotten magics or what have you, etc.

WFRP, sword and sorcery, horror, etc. But I never knew they were a feature of early official D&D.
