Making Wooden Adjustable Parallels

Adjustable Parallels are usually used by machinists, but I've found several uses for them in a woodworking shop. I demonstrated these uses near the end of the video. I hope you enjoyed!
Impractically Complicated Scissor Vise
Переглядів 1,3 тис.3 роки тому
A scissor vise! I made this vise because I hadn't seen it before and was curious to see how it would work out. I would not recommend making this vise, as there are far simpler designs that work just as well or even better and that are far less involved to make. I've strayed off the beaten path on this one just to see what was down it, which is a pretty poor criteria upon which to make a design ...
Zero-Slack Sanding Block
Переглядів 4,4 тис.4 роки тому
This is a sanding block I made. The idea was the having a sanding block that pulls the sandpaper tight across the bottom. This prevents it from bunching up and also allows for different geometries to be attached to the sole of the sanding block. Also, here's the riddle: A man walks into a store with 50 dollars cash and no other forms of currency (no receipts, cards or expensive items). He leave...
Building a Better Bandsaw Stand
Переглядів 8424 роки тому
This project took more than a month, but I'm happy with how it turned out. You'll notice that on this stand I put the drawers on the side, as opposed to their more natural position facing the operator. This was to take advantage of my particular shop layout, but the stand would work just as well if the bandsaw were 90 degrees rotated. I will post formal plans for this stand in the coming days!

Good job! John Heinz has a video on full extension wooden drawer slides. You should watch it. He uses a stop mid length to achieve the full length slide. That would also work on your design. The ball bearings in conjunction with a stop such as John uses would be worth investigating. Again…Good Work!

Great job! Great educational props and explanation, as well! On the first prototype, you milled the groove on the first piece, then flipped it around to mill the other groove, creating a second reference edge. If you used one fence setting to mill the first groove on all three pieces, then moved the fence and milled the second grove using the same reference edge against the fence, then all grooves would align perfectly. Reducing the number of reference surfaces during a project is something that took me FOREVER to learn and I don't think I have ever finished a project to completion without forgetting this at least once. We'd all love to believe that when we mill a component to x dimension that it is truly that dimension. What I can promise you is that it is not that exact dimension The more components to the project, the more the errors accumulate, an reducing the number of reference surfaces helps reduce the cumulative error. On the bearing strips, you cut the strips first, then stacked them up and drilled the stack. If you drill the holes before cutting the strips, it may be easier in the long run. A note on cutting thin strips is to position the fence so the thin strip is to the left of the blade, and use a vacuum hose taped to the tablesaw just to the left of the blade to catch the strip before it gets damaged by the blade. A zero-clearance insert helps here too. Sorry for being critical on those two points, but I felt it was worth mentioning. Regardless, I love your ingenuity and passion to create! Liked and Subscribed.

You are incredibly talented. I watched your creation unfold, and was transfixed by EVERY SECOND. I was also very impressed by your honesty - whereas many would pretend they did this perfectly first time, you have admitted you have learned by your mistakes, and I GREATLY ADMIRE HONESTY. Great entertainment, and I wish you the best of everything in the future.
