I live by the Galleria area! I’m not as active on Facebook but the Houston subreddit on Reddit has a pretty cool weekly thread about things-to-do in Houston.

@@REALHOUSTONLIVING I use to live in the Galleria area. I miss it. But now I’m in the upper middle town area because of a home I bought. Houston has become boring though out the years. It’s why I was asking for events feeds. Something to do in the city.😅

@@T509scorpion I heard that! One of my biggest gripes about Houston is that there isn’t much to do here, but NRG has been picking it up with more events and festivals! Definitely keep an eye out there

@@T509scorpion highly recommend getting involved with a group that shares a hobby, like a weekly sports group or gaming session. You can find a lot on Facebook or Google

That's either a pro or a con depending on your personal sense of social ethics, or from a personal impact perspective, depending on your income/wealth level. The wealthier you are, the more you benefit from regressive taxes. The poorer you are, the less you benefit, as the less money you make, the higher the percentage of your income that goes to regressive taxes. And since the minimum wage here is so low, the wealth disparity is significant. I personally benefit from this, but I would also vote for more progressive taxation because of my personal sense of social ethics.

Hello from Houston!! For taxes, you’ll pay anywhere from 25-30% depending on if the state has income taxes or not. Businesses and self-employed people might be able to write off more.

wow that is super low 100 a week 14 dollars a day assuming a couple 7 dollars a person or 2.33 a meal. Do you find your food options pretty limited at that budget?

There’s definitely a market for beauticians (nails, hair stylists, eyelashes, etc) but almost nothing for fashion and clothing.

Midtown could be the most walkable but it lacks cohesive development. But maybe with Ion District and others, it’ll live up to its potential in the future. But I found Upper Kirby to be more cohesive and walkable

It’s really great for some people but only if they can survive the not-so-great parts

@@REALHOUSTONLIVING yeah it’s awful, I’ve used this therapy lamp the last couple of years. I spent some good money on it and I swear by it! But the wife and I are just ready for a change. I absolutely have always loved the heat and hate when it starts getting colder. As far as the humidity goes ? Idk, Maines could get pretty bad during the summers believe it or not, so I’m not completely foreign to it. Montana on the other hand is pretty dry, well Billings metro area anyways.

One of the best school districts in Houston according to Niche.com! Kind of far from downtown, but Katy is developing to the point where you have everything you need within Katy

@@ag2847 Willis is definitely an up-and-coming area but it’s really far from downtown Houston. If you’re okay with that, then it’s a great, affordable area 👍

You know, I hear about this and gators a lot, but in my ~9 years of living here, I’ve yet to see either one of them in or near my house!

@@mpoweru4974 that’s a good question and point! I’ve always lived in town with minimal acreage so that could definitely be part of it. I can see it being more of an issue with more rural areas.

I LOVE Korea town in Spring Branch! We went to a noodle house over there and it had the best kimchi and cold noodles

No denying this one. Luckily, I personally haven’t had any run-ins with crime yet, but I think it’s all about being in the right place at the right time and avoiding rougher areas

Great question! Property taxes are definitely a huge factor in our mortgage payments. There are exemptions for disabled veterans and persons 65 or older, but you’ll need to ask your local lender for specific details. Feel free to reach out for recommendations 😄

Yes taxes are a big a problem in Texas. People think they are better off not paying state taxes but property and sales taxes will eat you alive.

I don’t disagree! There’s still plenty to do in Houston. But for me, the museums and Galveston get old fast and not to mention they can be a long drive. I’m glad you found activities to do though! What’re some of your favorites?

Well, aside of museums (which I don’t think you can get bored of…There’s an infinite amount of cultural activities posted weekly, all the music around the city (most of it for free and in really cool areas like the heights), now all the Christmas activities (impossible to go to all of them with my kid), running/biking in memorial, medical, the heights, all the bike paths and bayous, the woodlands…, sports you can practice outside thanks to the warm weather (rugby, football, soccer baseball, volleyball, dodgeball (even in bouncy trampolines), tennis, golf, the Texas Rock Gym (we love it), Kemah boardwalk, beer festivals, the Rodeo!, …man, for real, I could keep going for another 2000 lines.

I cannot hide I love this place, and of course I also recognize it can be messy on the roads, too hot (I cried when I first landed here and I crossed the plane’s doors, but you get used to it in some time), even dangerous if you don’t know the area you are in. But my friend, it is also one of the most multicultural, fun, affordable, welcoming, active, charming cities I’ve lived in (and I have lived in three different countries and some different cities and towns).

Galveston beaches are probably the closest and those are okay in my opinion. I grew up on Michigan beaches and it’s nothing compared to those. It’s great for fishing if you’re into that though!

@REALHOUSTONLIVING the home insurance rates are on par with Florida due to the storms on the gulf coast. The property taxes and insurance can be greater than the mortgage

It’s so funny you mention that because I was fighting for my life against mosquitoes in Galveston a couple days ago 😂 My wife and I love visiting LA! We love the Asia town over there, but you’re right that driving and parking are tough over there as well!

Museums are fun for like a weekend and can sometimes be quite a drive depending where you live, but they can definitely be a fun activity!

That’s fair. I’ve visited New York City a few times and the driving there is very stressful!
