Buchla Music Easel card slot Part2: Using the "Retro" Program Card
Part 2 of the video about the Buchla Music Easel program card slot is a dive into how to use the original style program card to either add variation to patches using both mode or recreate patches as done in the 1970's.

Marimba Lumina Unbound Improv
Переглядів 3595 місяців тому
A Marimba Lumina improv using the sounds and setups I just used for dNaga's "Unbound" dance work and with a nod to setups I made for "Rebirth of Apsara." (Previously uploaded upside-down, but a little sharper. I decided that rotating it and uploading again would be a more satisfying experience even if the image is dulled a little by the second export.)
The Buchla 208 Card Slot explained
Переглядів 1,2 тис.6 місяців тому
Buchla engineer-designer Joel Davel sheds some light on the 208's card slot and how it figures into the general operation of the 208 or 208C. This informal but fairly comprehensive video explains how the card slot works and how it reveals the how the 208 control works in general.
the Modern Easel unscripted
Переглядів 2,4 тис.7 місяців тому
My informal look at the Modern Music Easel: what's new and why. (Skip to 3:23 if you want to skip my introductory improv). As I was waiting for an opportunity to make a quality video going over the new case and the EMBIO, I grew impatient and just threw the iPhone up and strung together these videos. I hope it's informative and entertaining.
A case for reintroducing the AuxCard back into the lineup?
Переглядів 351Рік тому
In checking a few things I realize that it may be time to bring back the AuxCard. This is a simple spontaneous recording with just the iPhone mics and the Buchla 208C with 218eV3. (The AuxCard being am modulation by the mod oscillator and using pressure for volume providing mostly of the interest.) I should use this for something. . . Stay tuned.
Both Eyes Open Warmup
Переглядів 186Рік тому
This is the warmup sound check I went through before the Both Eyes Open opera premiere at the Flea Theater in NYC. It demonstrates what sounds and musical gestures I am adding to the chamber group of piano, violin and clarinet. It includes both melodic gestures and manipulated samples of sounds (created by the composer and performer) and is an example of what should be possible when musicians a...
Playing the Buchla LEM218v3: A short performance and introduction to updated 218e ideas
Переглядів 3,2 тис.Рік тому
Joel Davel plays a layer of monophonic Buchla 208C and polyphonic piano samples using the latest 218e update, the 218e-V3/LEM218v3. (USB-MIDI goes to a computer and DIN MIDI to the Easel Command.) After the 4 minute demo performance, Joel explains some of his musical design choices and thanks collaborators.
Drying Hachiya Persimmons
Переглядів 5032 роки тому
This video is about what to do with Hachiya persimmons. Specifically this goes through the process of how to dry Hachiya persimmons. (Unlike most of my videos, this has nothing to do with music. This was recorded in 2020 while sheltering at home and was edited down from a 10 minute version.)
Marimba Lumina 3.5 final assembly in time lapse.
Переглядів 4943 роки тому
After all the circuit boards for the Marimba Lumina are complete, final assembly can begin. This takes the viewer through this process with a time lapse shoot. This Absolute Deviation updated Marimba Lumina 3.5 was completed by Joel Davel in 2020. The music playing is "Balance Like Like" by Jack West and performed by Jack West and Curvature from the album "Around About Now:" Jack West, 8-string...
208C pitch calibration using user accessible trimpots
Переглядів 7623 роки тому
Joel explains in this (unofficial) video how to use the user-accessible trims to calibrate/trim your control voltage and/or MIDI keyboard inputs for pitch on the 208C. 208C's are calibrated/"tuned at the factory," but if you swapped in a new 208MIDI daughtercard board, or if you simply feel your pitch tracking needs adjustment, this video shows you how to do it using a tuner.
Christmas MetroGnome
Переглядів 2044 роки тому
A couple days ago I gave Don Buchla's (holiday) MetroGnome that I had in my possession since our 252e demo years ago back to it's original assembler co-creator Ami Radunskaya. Before I did that I made a video of it working. It inspired me this morning to play a variation on Carol of the Bells on the toy piano that I'd used as it's backdrop. (The MetroGnome is only LEDs, but it is polyrhythmic)
Buchla Bananas Explained

Snare with Easel part1
Переглядів 8484 роки тому
A snare meets an Easel (218e and 208C) and, with the help of the arpeggiator and a little variation in pressure, they seem to get along. Perhaps we'll do this again. I was working on a 208C patch to use as many shorting bars as possible and thought introducing a snare drum into the mix might be interesting. -Joel Davel (For Buchla nerds: I was also testing the 218e's latest firmware 31.1 that u...
Lockdown: "Attention on F block" improv -- Joel Davel on Marimba Lumina
Переглядів 5 тис.4 роки тому
Another Lockdown festival-like solo improve, this is my contribution to the idea of a video performance at home during this COVID-19 outbreak. This is my longest post to date, free of edits or perfect takes, but it makes use of the sound environment I HAD been preparing for our upcoming shows. The sounds I use come from the Paul Dresher Ensemble "They Will Have Been So Beautiful" concert setups...
"Inside Out" excerpt: Joel Davel plays a historical Buchla 200 system
Переглядів 9084 роки тому
I'd rather design than repair, but even more so perform. The nice thing about repairing an old modular system is being able to take it for a test drive. I used this 1972-era Buchla 200 system to generate parts for an as yet unpublished piece called “Inside Out”. Here’s an excerpted video clip from late 2018. For Buchla nerds, this used a Buchla model 217 for touch input, model 246 to drive the ...

do you know if the program manager card works with the new modern Buchla Easel?
Of course. Card slot is unchanged. There is a separate video on just the card slot too.
looks fun! On my wish list along with an ARP 2600 FS and Erica Synths Perkons. That trilogy would be massive fun and throw in pin matrix Analogue Solutions Ample. MIDI clock them for some weird madness.
but what is this for? i cant imagine paying 5 grand for this noise
i guess getting rid of the tinijax was a bit too modern hehe
Scent of a mule
Very cool! Are you able to import your own sounds into the instrument? Also, does it have an internal memory bank for sounds, or does it require connecting to an external source such as a computer?
Wonderful
Absolutely incredible! Came from looking in to the weird keyboard thingy behind Danny Carey. This performance 🤯
Joel can this work with a Behringer Arp 2600?
i cant believe i never saw this video, this is great!
Great Synth, definitely on my bucket list when it comes down to some reasonable price. In the mean time, I'm looking hard at the Pittsburgh modular Voltage Lab 2
Here's a link to the updated "Meta-Programming" guide. buchla.com/guides/Modern_Meta-Programming.pdf
Great to see / hear this system. I'm a big fan of the Werner Jepson recordings.
That was great, Joel! Thanks for putting so much time and energy into really diving deep into the cards!
Thanks for these vids, really inspiring. Definitely going to order some of those retro cards to tinker around. I was wondering, Am I correct to think that if I'd want separate outputs for the sequencer's triggers, I could solder an output to one of the trigger sequencer's solder points on the top row?
Yes. But it'll be at about 15 volts and will stay at 15v for the entire duration of the stage. You might want to divide it to 10v or at least add a series resistor like 47k before attaching to a banana, assuming most external stuff has a divide on the input (like a 281e). And of course Stage 5 (on an unmodified 208C) will be the Local mode (10v) signal when it's in local and both mode; not stage 5.
Here's a link to my reference chart for the appropriate resistors www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/sypmt91t7zfniow5ou02g/Meta-Programming-Card-Resistor-Chart-JJD.pdf?rlkey=6129nssc12w2ogj4aui0sipe3&dl=0 and a link to a Digi-Key cart I think you could use to buy resistors. www.digikey.com/short/t5wh738h
Love this!
Yeesh! It just sounds so gooooood!
Thank You. Always appreciate your posts.
Great video! Thanks for sharing with us!
What a wild instrument!
thank you
Loved it man!
Sounds both like it was from the 1970s and the 2170s.
Didn't know Conon O'Brian could shred on the mallet
My Retro Easel arrived two days ago - I’m in love.
This video Bout to blow up
Rugrats music
Dat marimba lumina though. Both. Much want.
This is great ! Looking forward to part 2 …
guy just has spare buchlas sitting around...
Well I've done the PCB layout on all the Buchla gear since 1995, contributed a lot to new and old designs, was the engineer who updated the 208 to the 208C, and have overseen a lot production. So I tend to have spares and a lot of prototype Buchla hardware in both working and non-working condition. Uh. . . so what were you expecting
@@JoelDavel I know Joel.............just a joke.....lol
@@PSILOCYBINISTHEWAY Ah. I didn't want to give the impression that I'm a wealthy collector of Buchla gear with time on his hands. My goal is to have my Buchla gear performance ready, but I'm constantly pulling it apart to try different user scenarios. So I have pieces of it everywhere. I figured I might as well make a few demo/info videos while I go over the stuff.
@@JoelDavel You should, totally makes sense to have a Buchla training grounds/graveyard at your house lol
Soooo informative, clear and inspiring! Love the choices you made and also that cool shorting bar hack at the end. Looking forward to episode 2 and resistor magic!
Keep on!
This stuff is so interesting and shows how thoughtful the program cards/knobs/etc. are. Thanks for making this!
Great demonstration, and super useful for programming cards. All those details are useful when planning sets! Thank you
Thank you Joel. I need to pick up the program manager card
I really love this approach to showing off the Easel or other modules for that matter. I'm hoping to have an Easel or a small 200 cabinet based around the 208 after I've resolved my 200e. Curious if the circuit board on the monitor was a sneak peak tease? Thanks for all the work, Joel.
Those program Cards were really ahead of its time. Great Video Joel!
Getting stuck into the new video thanks! I’m very interested in your double embio setup.
That's 2nd EMBIO is not connected to anything. It's just there to show the embedded program manager in that EMBIO window
As well as newer 208c/218 . Interested in buying case and controller
Thank you. I am curious about working physical cards. Have older easel, many blank cards ;)
I'm planning on making a specific video about the cards. Stay tuned
Great demo Joel!
i have had my easel for almost a month and LOVE playing it!
Glad you enjoy it Philip! It is unusually addictive and satisfying to play
@@JoelDavel Addictive indeed....that is why i spend about 5 hours daily, in front of it! Would like to pick up some more modules, soon to add to it.
By the way, I do know the difference between squares and rectangles . . . and obviously this case isn't a square.(Maybe pulse width modulated squares should be "rectangle" waves?) I think you all understood I was just making the point that it has 90 degree corners which allows the overall dimensions to be skinny enough for travel and still maximize space. And BTW the case body is US made and made of a very strong HMPE (High Molecular Polyethylene), not ABS. When I'm unscripted sometimes my mouth gets ahead of my brain.
Hi Joel, can you tell me why the MO frequency and modulation sliders were switched back in 2013? I really appreciate your nod to that by making the seq available to the MO again on the 208c.
Don realized he made a mistake in the order and changed it. The instrument UI control flows like a schematic from left to right. It makes more sense to deal with the pitch first just like the Complex and then it's output to the Complex that it modulates. It's possible Don liked the mod osc connection with a shorting bar?, but that 1973 order was odd. And against objections from BEMI to make any changes, Don felt it was important enough to re-order it.
@@JoelDavel thank you Joel.
Thanks for this! Loving my Modern Easel!
I’ll get there eventually. Amazing as always.
Here I am, looking for something to do with my 218 and 208c. Layering with midi inspired me!
Food and music go well together! Are you growing these hachiya?
Oh yeah. It's the tree in front of the house.
@@JoelDavel Perhaps we should do a Buchla cookbook: "Sauces of Uncertainty"
@@soundandsavor7955 yummy idea. Fold ingredients in, add to the complexity, . . pair a sauce with a module: The 292, a four ingredient sauce with a natural decay; The 227 that hits all 4 corners of taste; The 218 that you can eat with your fingers . . .
@@JoelDavel Did you see i invented a new Buchla technique this morning. As the first harvest from the awesome Masumoto family harvest arrived, i created a random peach arpegiator.
i have easel envy!
