    Besides salt and pepper, you might want to also carry some frying oil for the skillet, but I don't know if a film canister is the best way for storaging liquids. Perhaps some small glass bottle with screw on cap would be better for the oil.

      Nothing like a good well set magnetite dark black patina on a kitchen knife. As long as ya keep it clean and dry its like the old gray wrench finish. Can't beat it off with a hammer boss!😂

    Walter Sorrells did a video called "Caring for carbon steel knives" , using a version of an old gunsmith process that converted the Fe302 to Fe304 , from red rust to magnetite. Far more stable and durable finish than most forced patinas

    I worked in waste water treatment and know that purple stain very well. You got lucky with the navel jelly. Worked in the lab 47 years and had to use the emergency shower only once. To me even mustard is just more chemicals. Love your video, thank you for leaving that accident in the video. I know sh*t happens. My job depended on that.

    Well, here i go again. For a short time i got into making knives, until i found that by the time id smoothed them into what i wanted id used so much material in polishing and spent so much time that it wasnt practical to sell them. I sold a few but felt embarrassed by the prices i had to charge, and at that, i still wasnt making anything on time spent. Point is I quit. But i did find out that 2 ton epoxy is good stuff, but not the best. If a knife is left out in direct sun the epoxy will turn to syrup and the handles will loosen. Not so JB Weld. It will stand both heat, cold and wet, and i believe it will still be holding the handle long after the steel is long used up.

  • @larryreese6146
    @larryreese6146 День тому

    That sheath really looks good. Not for metal but knife sheaths or any kind of leather a blow dryer and Vaseline petroleum jelly. Just glob the jelly on at one spot and use the hair dryer to heat and push it along. It will liquify like water and soak into the grain of old dry leather. You can take old stiff leather and watch it wilt into a flexible limp noodle. You can do hard bees wax the same way on the ratiest old wood you can find. It will make a thin coating that will go into the grain and put a paper thin even layer on top that can be polished. Warning on the Vaseline jelly. It will open up the cracks in the leather so they can be seen. But it will be durable and, for an old sows ear, it won't look too bad.

    •  День тому

      Thanks for the tip. I have some leather 80 years old and should be a good test.

    Dave thanks for your videos, I watch all of them here in Philippines. So for nice and robust patina on a blade it’s good to use also ferric chloride - this is what they do very common for commercial/manufacturing knifes. Ah, I also worry about Patriot (Dwaine) He just disappeared that is. I hope he is ok, and nothing bad happened with him. Anyway God bless you Dave. Always stay safe and put your head on a swivel (Patriot words)

    • @blademan175
      @blademan175 День тому

      Thank so very much, I appreciate your kind words! Great tip on the ferric chloride, I knew I would forget some. In hindsight, I should have mentioned in the video that oxidation won’t take place without oxygen! The air did not get to the encapsulated mustard blade and that’s why the blade wasn’t as affected. Hopefully someone can clue us in on Dwayne 🙏🏻. God bless you as well!

    I’ve been a full time butcher for 40 years and I will take a carbon blade over stainless every time for a whole list of reasons. Also prefer wood handles over any other material for comfort. I use mustard on my hunting knives (mostly 1095 also A2) and noticed if I just barely dab mustard on the blade it gets a darker finish. Less mustard (real thin dabs) seems to gets better colors. I kinda agree if it’s carbon you should put a patina on it.

    • @blademan175
      @blademan175 День тому

      Thank you, I know it’s controversial but I highly respect the opinion from a professional, such as yourself, over a collector of high end knives! I neglected to say in the video that the blade that was encapsulated with mustard had little change because oxidation can’t occur without oxygen! Thanks for taking the time to comment and watch my video, have a great day!

    Great thoughts on this subject! Not really a fan of forced patina. I have plenty of knives with beautiful natural aged patina. But only if I get one that is badly pitted I will knock the rust off smooth out the surface and coat with cold blue finish for a nice look and takes the eyes away from the pitting. My general rule is still if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

    Nice kit, although it's quite heavy. The handle of the skillet can be made by drilling two holes near the top of the small side to insert a specially bent wire-handle (as shown by 'waypointsurvival'). Mineral oil is not food-safe, you should use camellia oil instead, pure or mixed with bees wax. A small bottle of dish-soap and a piece of rubbing pad would be a useful addition.

    This twenty three (23) minute video is one of, if not the best, DIY video I have watched on your channel to date! BRAVO! We particularly appreciate the details you put into your projects. You would have a total blast perusing the isles of the DIY, Japan import, and Korean import shops scattered around the Philippines. The empty suitcases you arrive with would return home full of potential project materials. Combined with what we find on Shopee, Lazda and now Temu online sites, there is enough raw materials to keep a DIYer very busy. The Philippines has trade agreements in place with many nearby countries so pricing is super low on most items we find. We have found a plethora of round, square, rectangular, and oval stainless steel containers to build custom cook kits. Many times, great containers are sold as "bento boxes." Some have removable folding handles and the clip locks just like the pot you demonstrated. Your formed aluminum pot hanger is pure genius. You may want to look up the Far North Bushcraft channel. The channel owner, Lonnie, made some fantastic sling type pot hangers from small diameter stainless steel cable and ferrules available at hardware stores and online. I made up several sets for pots (several, rather large in size) we intended to suspend from a tripod. The same materials might also be adapted to hang your pot, with out the need to form a sling. Thank you for another superior video!

    The adult lunch box is a very deep rabbit hole. I don't do outdoors much but occasionally spend a day or two at some hotel room here and there on work trips where I often have breakfast and an evening snack in my room to avoid the usual excessive salt, sugar, and fat of eating out. Food grade PP is a *very* safe plastic but I prefer glass and still on the look for small vials for my pepper, english mustard powder, smoked paprika, and cinnamon along with glass bottles with glass stoppers for my olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and soy sauce. Recently had a back and forth on another lunch box video about the quest for a small portable grater for nutmeg, hard cheese, or chocolate.

    • @blademan175
      @blademan175 4 дні тому

      I do wish there was an easy source for small glass containers. I found cork topped bottles but they are too small for practical use, made for craft projects. You reminded me of the kitchen folding multi tool I found while camping, it has a grater but too big to fit in that mess kit. Have a nice day!
