Estes Designer Special Model Rocket Kit 1 - Finless
Is there really enough stuff in the Estes Designers Special to make 8 interesting rockets? This video is the first rocket we make from the kit, without fins it's an interesting one for sure.
Discussion about finless model rockets and the plans for the one in the vid:

    I'm building a similar finless rocket. I replaced the nose weight with a 28-gram DIY 1000Hz flight computer to study the flight characteristics. I'm glad to see that the increased nose weight allows flights using a C6-3. 👍

      @@RCNRocketChief I have been flying the flight computer in a finned Mongoose rocket kit since October. I experienced some hardware and software issues that are now corrected. Working at 1 millisecond resolution, I can sense the vibrations of an Estes ignitor firing, the delay between the ignitor firing and the motor coming up to pressure. Roll motion is one of my primary interest areas of flight. Comparing the injection molded fins of the Mongoose to jig mounted balsa fins and finally a finless rocket.

    When I was a kid, 45+ years ago, I used to make body tubes out of paper tape. As a base, I used a vacuum cleaner tube. I made the nose cone out of balsa wood. Now I only use ESTES and Klima body tubes and nose cones (but I still make balsa nosecones in some cases). Nice work.

      I started about the same time you did and made them much the same way then. Now I like to make things from scratch to prove I can do it, like my video about making a nose cone from fibreboard insulation. But it's just as fun making things from the Estes Designer's Special or kits, and even easier 🤣

    That was an excellent explanation of "serries" and "parallel". I haven't had any success launching clusters yet. I do use parallel wired igniters. Next summer I plan on increasing my Launch Battery amperage to see if that is a solution.

    • @My3nMy4
      @My3nMy4 13 днів тому

      This probably has the most effect on whether you will get simultaneous, reliable ignition of your clustered motors. The simple Electron Beam launch controller, with the 4 AA batteries, just doesn’t provide enough current. If you have access to a 12v battery like a sealed lead acid battery, or even a 7.4v LiPo, you’ll get the current dump you need.

    I built a total scratch build 3years ago for under 10 dollars, chute and all. Used a gift wrap tube, dollar store table cloth and the nosecone out of Stiff paper. The launch lug was a straw, the launch retainer was made out of a pair of cheap tweezers from a tooth kit. It's what got me back into rocketry after many years off. I wish I still had all my childhood and adolescent rocket collection. I sold all them off in the late 90's for cheap to a work friend. So after Creating my 1st scratch built I have amassed a fleet of 47 going on 48 of my new fleet. as seen here. ua-cam.com/users/shorts0EOqE3ruBic

    Foam is shave able and sand able, it is also paint able if the surface prepared appropriately. I painted the 4 foam inserts on my Estes Death Star Model Rocket. I used thinned wood filler brushed lightly on and sanded for a base, then lightly used spray primer, sand then the gray paint cote. With acrylics you still would want some kind of fill to create smoothness to the foam also.

    im so old i remember when those were brand new. i built a lot of estes rockets as a kid and teen. fun times. back when you'd get a cool catalog, save up your money, fill out a printed order page, get your mom to write you a check and pop it in the mail, 1 or 2 weeks later you'd get a cool box of kits and parts.

      Back in those days I only got the occasional kit, most of my stuff was DIY. I had to ship engines to eastern Canada and that sucked up most of my funds. I had to convince my uncle to get a Class 3 Explosives licence so I ordered them in his name. I really wanted this one but it wasn't possible then.
