The Exsultet used at Easter Vigil, according to the Altar Book version of the BCP 2019. I am not a professional singer, I am just a parish priest, but I wanted to create this as a teaching resource for those wanting to learn it. Sung by Ben Jefferies. The "Kidd" Venite - A composition commissioned for the St. Bernard Breviary. As S-35 was such a lovely proper setting for the 1979 Venite, a proper chant composition for the 2019 BCP text was needed. Fr. Nathaniel Kidd (Restoration Anglican, Bellingham) lent his expertise to the task, and the subsequent product is outstanding. Sung by me in this video.

Holy Week? An Explanation & Invitation
Is there any chance of a non-leather edition of these psalters for bulk purchase and use in prayer services? Would be a great supplemental text along with the BCP2019 to chant the psalms for corporate morning prayer, without needing to get a box of Breviaries. Thank you for all the work that you do! Have been using the Breviary since release.
Where can one find this translation? If I wanted to use it in daily prayer before investing a lot of money.
I downloaded a PDF copy and have been reading it that way.
Ben, would you know of any way to get hold of a copy in the UK? Shipping prices are so high from the States. Many thanks.
At present we don’t have any warehousing in the UK. So there’s sadly no way we can bring the shipping down at this juncture, for our warehoused books (as opposed to some of our paperbacks) Sorry to disappoint Perhaps you could find a local Christian bookshop who could buy 10 copies or something, and then the cost would be radically brought down?
@@benjefferies8531 Thanks, Ben, no worries. Any word yet on pricing of the new editions?
@@richardmyerscough5242 Yes -- $55
Do you have a PDF of the whole St. Bernard's Breviary? I had the beautiful book, but I would love a mobile version (I don't want to damage the book at work, etc).
I will talk with the CEO about this. The ESV portion wouldn’t be distributable- but perhaps the first 600 pages might be - for those who bought the hard copy like yourself… let me look into this
These look great! What are the chances of a less expensive pew edition of the St. Bernard Breviary?
The trouble is - a less expensive edition would be a glue-bound paperback - that would deteriorate to uselessness in less than 3 months, and thus disappoint every customer. So - Anglican house can’t in good faith sell such. Price was kept as low as possible on the breviary - but I know it’s still a bit of an investment. When you think about all the books you get “in one” there - BCP, bible, hymnal, etc - it is evident that it’s not THAT expensive.
@@benjefferies8531 I agree with this sentiment. It's worth every hard earned penny.
@@benjefferies8531 That makes perfect sense. And if the photos are indication, it looks like a very beautiful book that will wear nicely! It'll just mean saving up for a little while
What Wise Men woll gi ve this Christmas. 😊
Do we know what the prices for each will be? 😮
$55
Who did the artwork in this book?
Which artwork do you mean?
When can we order?
End of December
Wait, is it for sale December 2024 or do we have to wait an extra year December 2025? The description of the video says 2025, but the title 2024. These look really cool, Thanks!
Oops - good catch. It will be for sale toward the end of Dec 2024
Hm, why pew edition? Are they sturdier or something?
No - this was just done years ago when all there was was the pew edition :)
Lovely work!
Many thanks!
This is useful information.
Glad it was helpful!
Does this last flat?
Lay out flat*
Not at first. The page-lay is somewhat rounded. Small books, with the smaller page size and therefore less page-weight - don’t usually lay very flat. But over time and with use it would come to lay flat-ish.
That is so beautiful!
I was expecting to see the score pages as they move forward, so one could learn both audibly and visually. Was this supposed to be, or is the way it is now intentional?
Ah, that would have been better, yes. This vid was made very quickly as a “rough” tutorial for those who learn by ear
Do you know if they will restock this?
Yes - sort of. A new edition is being produced that is calf-skin not goat-skin, and has a more decorated type-setting (red and black, decorated drop caps, etc) - and a different design on the cover It should be live for sale around Christmas. There will also be a “noted for plainsong edition” coming out at the same time, which will have a very similar design, but will be the pointed psalter from the St Bernard breviary
Where did you get the tune from?
S-57 in the 1982 Hymnal of the Episcopal Church
my daily devotional. best and most easy to use.
Thank you for making this recording! I am new to chanting the daily office. I just received your incredible St. Bernard Breviary, but I am quite musically illiterate. This recording helped me chant the Benedictus this morning! Thank you for all the work you put into the Breviary. I’ve heard people say that he who sings prays twice. Thank you for making a resource that is helping me do that. I am looking forward to growing in my ability to do that. Edit: I just saw the link on your website with all of the recordings! What a fantastic resource. This will help me tremendously!
Thanks for the feedback! So glad it is/was a blessing
Wonderfully done.
Quality as always Ben
Thanks!
Qué bello!!! Lo amé 😍❤🔥🙌
If i may ask, where did you go to seminary? And what are your thoughts on Lutheranism?
I went to Nashotah House. I think of Lutherans as our nearest theological cousins as an Anglican. If I am in a small midwestern town with no Anglican Church (ACNA or continuum) my next search would be for an LCMS parish
What size is the font?
The body text is 9.5 if I recall. It’s on the ALP website somewhere (which I keep needing to update)
@@benjefferies8531 thank you.
This looks fantastic, I might need one. But before I pull the trigger on it… any plans to produce a soft leather bound version?
There isn’t. I’m a hardcover devotee :)
@@benjefferies8531 No problem. I bought it anyway and it arrived today 🙂
Thank you for your straight forward explanation
Thanks!
This looks absolutely incredible! I can’t imagine how much time and energy this project required. Thank you for making this. I can’t wait to purchase my copy soon.
Thanks! Yeh about 1500 hours :)
@@benjefferies8531 Wow! What an investment! We are grateful for your sacrifice.
Beautifully printed book, but why in the world are you using modern English. It spoils the whole effect!
Because modern English is my mother tongue :)
@@benjefferies8531 Yes, and your book will be outdated in 10 years because people praying in modern English will be saying : Hey, god what's up? That will be your new normal.
@@stephanottawa7890 If that's the case, then in 10 years, "2019 English" will appear to them as archaic as 16th century English. Which is fine. I don't hate on Traditional Language prayers. It is merely my experience that Trad. Lang. draws attention to itself, rather than being a transparent conduit of meaning. And, as a priest, I have observed that this can heighten the danger of over-prizing aesthetics -- a danger to which we Anglicans are already prone, and need to be vigilant in not falling into. The St. Bernard Breviary actually HAS trad. lang. canticles as options, FWIW. I think we Novus Ordo folks can have beautiful things too; what is old does not have a unique claim over beauty.
@@benjefferies8531 Okay, have it your way. I know that you priests have to have the last word.
How was the print quality on this? I just received mine today and I'm sad to say the print is smudge and shadowed in several places throughout the Prayer Book.
I’m really sorry to hear you received a defective copy. Email info at Anglican house and show a pic of the smudging - and they will replace at no cost
@@benjefferies8531 just did!
Does this contain the full rubrics for the priest?
If you mean all of the manual acts that might be found in an Anglican Missal - no.
My copy arrived today. Any suggestions for placing the 10 ribbons?
Sure! Here’s what I do. (I don’t mark the start of the offices - because I just know that page number: 38 and 138 respectively - the first morning canticle in MP - the prayer for the day of the week MP - the psalms for the day for midday prayer - the Magnificat - the prayer for the day of the week EP - the psalms appointed - in the hymnal - the collect of the week - the common collects section - the Bible readings - the examen at the back (if you don’t need a ribbon for midday)
Is there a place to make suggestions for the 1604 Catechisms next edition?
Sure you can email me - Info @ goodshepherdoa [Dot] Org
We printed out the psalter pdf and have been greatly enjoying using it with our boys. Do you have any plans to publish a book version of just the psalter, rather than as part of the breviary? Secondly, I would love it if you could create a playlist with all the psalms chanted in numerical order, so that we could play that on UA-cam throughout the day. I appreciate the links to the audio files, and we've used those heavily for learning the tones for each Psalm, but it's a little cumbersome to set up for background music.
Thank you again for your work with this, it's a skill I didn't even know I was lacking, and has brought our family a lot of joy.
What a joy to hear this! Yes and yes - A stand alone psalter (extracted from the breviary) will be for sale from Anglican House toward the end of the year. And - Resurrection Anglican Clarksville has begun recording beautiful high quality recordings of the Bernard psalter - and posting them on UA-cam. When complete - I think they will also post to Spotify. Check them out!
I like it a lot
Very cool,!!!!!
Love the sounds of kids in the background 😅
I have owned and passed on many editions of the 2019... you guys have done a tremendous job with various bindings, paper quality, and typesetting. I cannot wait to receive this new edition! Cheers.
Thanks for the kind feedback
One of my favorite videos on UA-cam. I am a former Muslim who was born a Catholic who has now come back to the Catholic Church.
Glory to God!!
My order arrive about an hour ago. I am beyond impressed. I mean, I expected a lot based on the various reviews… but I never expected this much. While it won’t become my principal office book due to me having one I am bound to pray, I truly believe it will become a trusted and welcomed companion on my journey of faith. Thank you for the amazing work that went into “Da Brick”…
Also, can I mention I love the smell? Yes, I sniff new Bibles and Prayerbooks.
Thank you so much for your kind words, Bishop Lyons!
Does this version lay as flat as the regular pocket edition?
Yes - or even perhaps a little more so
Just ordered one of these. We have been doing Fr. Michael Jarret’s liturgy for families for a little over a year, and I think we are ready to move into BCP proper. I am more familiar with hearing chant / antiphonal singing in the Orthodox Church, which I have always thought very beautiful and edifying, but could never bring myself (as a convinced but liturgical Protestant) to sing the Hours right through. I am very thankful for this breviary and hope that it restores some sense of transcendence to modern worship.
Your comment is what I dreamed of throughout the ~1500 hours it took to make the breviary. :) May God bless you in the use of it!
Do you have the pdf of what you printed? I can't find a signature friendly version online for printing and binding
If you print it 32 pages at a time (1-32, 33-64, etc) and print as “bulletin” - that does the trick
I am curious - was thought given to placing the Ordinary of the offices in the relative center of the book to even out wear, or do you find that the arrangement here balances that concern out over the course of time? I ask because the only Office book I’ve ever had (aside from using a BCP with a separate bible) for the Office was one of the old ECUSA Daily Office Books, and I found that it never cooperated with me in terms of laying flat.
Yes, Father - indeed thought was given to this functional/material matter. It’s not that the middle lasts longer, than say, page 100. It’s rather that the first signature (16-32 pages) receives extra wear and tear because it is attached to the end leaf and so it gets tugged on every time the book is opened. There are 65 pages of front matter prior to Morning Prayer - and so I considered this sufficiently interior to not receive extra wear and tear. And the binding was designed to lay flat on all the pages, which indeed it does. Ample gutter margin also means that content isn’t lost in the deep bend on the interior of every page. It also seemed less than desirable to me to have the Bible readings at the beginning, as an “office sandwich” - from a flow point of view. I am confident that by the time the book would wear out on the pages that contain the office - the content will have been 100% memorized by the user at that point :)
Greetings! Can you also print, or do you strictly rebind already printed materials?
I do, yes.
Are the psalms in the same translation as the new Coverdale?
Yup!!
Fr. Ben, I am so thankful for this breviary. It has been a great help to my prayer life and to those whom I've recommended it to. Our parish uses your pointing for the Psalms on Sundays and the Hymns of the Heart as our main source of music. As of right now, we are printing them weekly, but I am curious: are there any plans to have the Psalms and the Hymns bound together? Or do you have a recommendation for a way that a parish could have about 125 of these made?
This is amazing! What are the dimensions?
The page size is 4.3x6”
Beautiful. It’s almost more Reformed Orthodox than Reformed Catholic. Preserves the real essentials. Thanks for sharing this!
A great compliment! Thanks!
Yes!!!
