How to build a quality cat shelter. BEST! (Part 1)
I see many critiques about it not being warm enough blah blah blah, just realize that anything you can do that stops wind, rain or snow is better than just being outside. Even if you can’t buy a heated house or go through all this work, just a dry place with lots of straw to burrow in is better than nothing. Anything that you can do to give these sweet babies an advantage over the cold helps.
Don't put string. They'll play with it! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
❤❤
I would use moving tape or duct tape to secure the sides.
I use wallboard insulation in the bottom of the tote. I would put that in before the reflective insulation.
I've made several of these type shelters over the years and they do work. Make sure to ONLY use straw, not hay or blankets inside. NO food or water inside. This is only a emergency shelter. Face away from prevailing winter winds.
Add catnip
Why you stopped creating videos, Please start again if possible 😊
👍 well done great idea
Can cat breathe ok inside? Just curious
What size do u make for square door ?
You're never supposed to have a blanket in a outdoor cat shelter because it retains moisture. No matter what you do it will retain moisture just straw only
Would it also work for me to put a cat door in my shed then add the cozy cat boxes?
Is it best to make multiple single dwelling cat shelters or a larger one for multiple cats? I understand that cats like to sit next to the entrance so…
I thought Cats hate anything FOIL
Does this work for dogs too?
I would (triple) the walls. This would hold cat body heat better!!! I would put a fleece blanket that can be taking to wash frequently that is soft foe them. Plus three tier the topper. Or buy the igloo beds for cats inside.
No fleece! Just straw.
You need to mention the straw. A lot of comments don't know you put anything inside.
Would be nice if you said how many inches wide /long the door is supposed to be for the shelter
All great ideas, Thank you so much.😊
🙏🙏🙏😻😻😻
perfect , 💪👏👏

How do you get the cats interested in going inside?
For some reason, i can't find part 1. How the flapping door was made! 😢
Great video tho
A lot of unnecessary taping just cut the darn crap long enuf!
Door flap dimensions?
What is the name of the insulation and where can I get some
Reflectix. Amazon.
Thanks. I’d vote for using a drill to cut the holes for the hinges instead of a soldering iron, which I’d suspect a lot of people don’t have.
Can you use Mylar foil blankets inside with straw if you don’t have reflective?
I have successfully used mylar. It it also heat reflective like what's in the video.
Reflectix is Mylar on two sides with bubble wrap inside. Better than just Mylar.
STOP FOLLOWING PEOPLE WHO CALL REFLEXTIX INSULATION! That’s only true when installed according to the instructions. Putting bubble roll flat against plastic totes creates condensation and buildup water. 1” rigid foam or greater is actually insulated against the cold. I build this video from Canada style but sideways (meaning the lit gets cut and NO water can pool also gorilla tape around the entire lid) and skip the tunnel go with an awning instead. ua-cam.com/video/0BD80hXf01g/v-deo.htmlsi=TPyx-_UJCb2HCioD
Make your shelters on the side completely gorilla taped along the lid starting from the bottom edge so water doesn’t go behind the tape. Stop following inferior building techniques. Unless you use rigid foam first this is just a windbreaker. ua-cam.com/video/0BD80hXf01g/v-deo.htmlsi=TPyx-_UJCb2HCioD
Reflectix when used against a thin plastic tote without air gaps is NOT ACTUALLY INSULATING! Read the instructions on the packaging it’s only radiant barrier 0-R valve. I’ve fixed others totes like this they sweat creating condensation which can wet the cat
7 minute ads are just WronG!
what are you using for insulation. I am having trouble following the video.
Bless you taking the time to teach us how to properly house the feral babies. 🙏💚🌹
I heard that when you install a flap is the Flop can be pushed in by the wind then water will enter play dripping down the flap
That doesn't seem to be insulation...to thin
Hope you realised those zip ties were put in the wrong part, water can get inside through the holes!. They should have been put in the over lip! Not at the top! The over lip that is below the top part you melted the hole!
You're amazing! I am so grateful that you brought up this issue! People NEED to know this!!❤
Not supposed to put water and food inside, I heard just little cat nip on intrance.😊
What about using the black all weather duct tape instead of the metal tape?
Yes, you can use duct tape, but it won’t reflect the cat’s body heat like the foil reflective tape does. So the later is ideal, but any shelter for the cats, with whatever materials you have or can afford, will help them survive the winter!
Some folks add a second door so the cats can escape if another animal enters through one of the doors. Have you found this to be necessary?
I watched a video where the person used 2 tubs. A large tub and a smaller tub that sat inside the larger tub. Insulation was a styrofoam type that was cut and placed in the space between the 2 tubs. sides. front and back, with 2 lids on the top with insulation. I like your door, but wouldn't work with 2 tubs. They used a plastic flower pot to cut round entry/exit holes and the slid the pot into the holes. I feed 4 feral cats, 2 for 7 years and 2 for 2 to 4 years and I just added a 5th. I've tried creating a place in the past, but the cats would use. The place were they sleep was better than what I made for them.
🐈🐕 thank you for your video so helpful God bless you for what you do
Great job. Very creative.
How big is the Rubbermaid tote? 1:14
I use 27 gallon container
First and foremost - THANK YOU for helping these poor homeless cats and kittens. Two things I was always taught - #1 NEVER put a blanket in the container as it will get moist/wet and defeat the whole purpose of keeping them warm and dry, and #2 - always have two openings each at opposite ends of the container in case a predator should enter the cat will have an escape route.
I would love to get involved in something like this in my community. I just ended up with a mama and 5 kittens over the summer that are somewhat feral. I have worked hard with them to get them to trust me. 3 kittens can pick up pet and love on but mama only pet and other 2 one will sometimes let me pet the other not even close. We have had them all fixed and and shots. So we are now their new parents. And I love every minute in having them. I had always had dogs never cats, I see now all the fun missed about them. They will be outside so your idea is a great one. Liked how you thought about that door neat idea.
Foil tape would look better round door but great job
Please do a video on how you did the door flap.
She probably cut the square hole out, then fixed the top with duct tape to flap like a hinge. Door should be smaller than opening so it flaps both ways and cat is not caught inside.
