The cello will bring you joy.
I can't imagine a life without the cello. It has brought me such joy.
Over the last 40 years, I've taught hundreds of people to play the cello. I've seen lives change through the power of music, as well as the human connection it has brought to people across the globe. Everyone started by playing just one note. Then they played another note. And over the course of a few years, life became more interesting because they learned to play this beautiful instrument.
If learning the cello is a thought that has been spinning in your head for some time, you might consider making that time happen now. It really isn't too late. Not at all. We teach people to play the cello every day at cellodiscovery.com. You'll learn at your speed and on your time.
If you have no idea where to start, you can get a free copy of our "Getting Started With the Cello" e-book. It will tell you everything you need to know. Here's the link. cellodiscovery.com/free-resources/
Hope to meet you in Cello Discovery. 💓

Do you think i’ll manage the 4/4 cello even though im 5ft with smaller hands ? Or should i return mine and change it for a 3/4?
I don't think you should make that big of a jump if you are on a 4/4 now. Aim to find a 7/8. That will probably be a good fit. A 3/4 is very easy to play but it doesn't have nearly as much projection as a 7/8 or full size cello. And it might not fit the space around your torso well enough.
Good day All cello lovers my name is Anne from sunny South Africa 😀 I started kinda late in my middle 50's on this beautiful instrument, we immediately bonded & I went for formal cello lessons my music teacher God bless him inspired my so wonderfully I was a shy full of anxiety😢my age was the factor but the heartfelt inspiration I got from my teacher was the key ingredient he calmy said...my dear age is but just a factor... what lies deep in the heart is really what matters...😊 I'm now busy with book 3 my cello and I are besties😂😂I can say I made it so can you... I've celebrated my 60th birthday in July of this year in grand fashion playing my happy birthday song in my cello & few other songs for my family😂😂my daughter joined me with her violin, my son on his french horn we make music like crazy😊 waiting now for my granddaughter she's 2yrs old & she looked at me in anticipation to take over grannies cello😂😂😂make a joyful noise unto the Lord❤
@@AnneFrancke such a beautiful story Anne....
Curious how tall are U ❤😂 What size Cello do you play? Your fav bow length and hair type? FAV rosin? Please, CURIOUS!😊
Haha! I am 5'5" and play on a 7/8 size cello. There isn't a 7/8 size bow so it is a "full" sized bow and I just use traditional Siberian horse hair and Bernardel rosin. :)
@cellodiscovery I'm 5' 1", petite but not small hands for my size on piano can reach full octane C to C, 👀 Glarry cello Spruce solid wood, matte 4/4 only $249.00 🇺🇸 Soft case, bow, rosin, no tuner no book. 3/4 $199 varnish gloss, bow, rosin, soft case, no tuner, no book. I read 📚 sound warmer on solid SPRUCE MATTE. VARNISH, 🤔 laminated but resonates brighter sound. I like the matte 👀 not afraid of large think OK I stand to play. Never before. Just got a feel once of a 3/4 years ago gonna B 73. 🤣😅😁👩🦳👋 Thank you!
Creating an utter feeling of light, warmth, comfort and inspiration, thank you Carolyn ❤️🎉
So true, all of it. This made me cry, but in a good way.
If there is true love hung somewhere it's in cello. for me learning to play cello healing my damaged spirit. ❤
So true ❤ Wishing everyone a wonderful, meaningful year ahead 🌟
❤
Carolyn, Happy new year 🎉 ❤❤❤
Hello I was a brass player for over 32 yrs . But now I’am on my 2yr on the cello it is a very hard to play but I have got 5 scales down and practice time is more focused time a week .
Good for you! Having 32 years under your belt as a musician, I'm sure you know how to go about practicing. You picked the best instrument for part 2. :)
💀 1rst-4th is my extension 💀
I'm already on a ⅞ths so thank you so much for encouraging healthy hand to cello size
I started in September, after my then 8 year old had been playing for a year. We have our lessons one after the other and I love that we are learning together. We are very fortunate to have a really wonderful teacher.
Such a wonderful experience to be able to play with your 8 year old. My very best to you both!
absolutely beautiful and heartwarming performance ❤
I love how authentic your video sounds. Many people just pair a video with a studio-recorded cello track, but with yours, I can follow along on my own cello. Thank you!
Thank you. :)
❤
very helpful....thanks
Glad it helped. :)
Thanks for the video Carolyn, it is helpful.
You are so welcome!
where can I go to find the best place to find the best order to watch your videos as a beginner?
Hi there. I have an affordable online cello school and the lessons progress from the VERY beginning and continue through the upper intermediate level. There are also interactive music scores with videos, printable music, live weekly group lessons via Zoom, virtual cello choir projects and a very welcoming community. Check it out at cellodiscovery.com
73 years old, had cello less than 1 month... advantage of being a former double bass player...found Scarlatti Sonatas for cello in my bass music. working on 1.. I do understand what you have said and I feel will help me. My main problems are bowing hand strength and mentally adjusting to 5th instead of 4ths. but doing well despite Lyme disease in brain. Therapy by cello....ha . Thanks for your insight.
Just started learning cello this month and gathering more information as I go! The warm ups and set up routines are very similar to what I do as a professional gamer, especially the wrist stretches and training my muscle memory! Thank you so much for all of your videos! 😊
You are so welcome!
I have smaller hands & am having a tough time finding a 7/8 in my area. Could you please tell me which of the baseline/lower end 4/4's run smaller? Thank you so much!! :)
Thanks for the tips! So I purchased a 3/4 cello for a great price at a garage sale. Worth noting that I wear men’s large gloves Do you foresee any issues with me learning on the smaller cello as a newbie? Not sure I’d run out and buy a 4/4 given my low entry cost
It kind of depends on what you hope to do with it. I can't say a lot of men play on a 3/4 but certainly some do. 7/8 might be a good size later on as it will have a larger sound. Your torso size contributes a bit to sizing as well as the cello should fall in the right locations - sternum and somewhere in the knee, inner thigh area.
Very helpful for a new cello owner ! Thanks so much
Thank you! I will be performing this at my year 4 recital on December 3rd.
Wonderful! Good luck at your recital!
Maybe you cover this in another video, but inspecting the bridge after changing strings is necessary. Some strings do not slide easily over the bridge and it gets pulled over and the feet of the bridge come off at an angle to the cello body. This affects the sound.
Do you recommend wrist vibrato or arm vibrato for a beginner?
Hi - So, unlike violinists, we have one option when it comes to wrist vs. arm vibrato. We always use arm vibrato. However, there is some variety when it comes to the gliding motion vs. the rotation. A good vibrato will have a combination of both.
Carolyn, this was helpful to me. Being a 63 year old beginner taking private lessons, I have adopted this warmup routine minus the vibrato part, still working on shifting as part of my daily after I tune each string first. Thanks for the advice. Cheers!
Very well done. ❤
Thank you, Carolyn, for another wonderful video; I'm a 64 year old multi instrumentalist musician, being playing since I was 14; this year, after being diagnosed with cancer and supposedly being now, cancer free and in need of something to help get my mind back to normal and cope with the stress I decided to learn the cello, which is an instrument I was always in love with and my knowledge of music is definitely making the journey a little easier; currently I'm learning on my own but I'll definitely find a teacher to make sure I don't get trapped into bad habits; I've been following your videos (and subscribed) and I would like to thank you for making them available
Thank you for such a sweet note. And you conquered the beast. ❤ I'm sure getting the mind to come back to "normal" will take time. Learning the cello is a great choice. If you think learning partially online might be a good fit for you, come join us at cellodiscovery.com. There's a LOT of guidance to help you (video lessons, interactive music, weekly zoom classes, virtual cello choir and a lovely community). You'll also find others who have overcome big life hurdles and they have found great joy in learning the cello plus the new friendships formed in the process. Hope we can meet you. :)
Do you need perfect pitch to learn cello?
Absolutely not! I do not have perfect pitch. I have what is called good "relative pitch" which is something that can be learned.
@ that’s great to know since not having perfect pitch has always felt like a disability in trying to learn music.
I don't understand the measurements how do they work? Do you measure the fret board or the body of the cello where does the 4/4 get its measurements from I have a cello but I don't know what its measurements are!!
So I personally don't know the measurements off the top of my head, but I got this off of Masterclass: "There are two cello sizes for adults: the full-size cello, or 4/4 size, which has a back length of 30 inches and above, and the ⅞ size cello, with a back that measures from 27 to 30 inches. There are five smaller cellos from which younger players can choose, ranging from ¾ (26 to 27.25 inches) to ⅒ (17.75 to 20 inches)" With that said, there is some variety in the different sizes both in terms of the length of the back and the width of the back. I play on a 7/8 and it runs a tad on the smaller side of a 7/8.
Such a beautiful piece. Thankyou for dor sharing. How can we find the sheet music 😢?!
Her book is called "Cello Moments" and it is sold by the music publisher Boosey & Hawkes.
Thank you so much for the wonderful lesson; I'm a multi instrumentalist musician and just last month I decided I want to learn the cello, which is an instrument I've always been in love with, but never tried to learn, until now; long way to go, but I'm sure it'll be rewarding
Good for you! The cello is such a magical instrument. Perhaps check out Cello Discovery? It was created for the adult beginner and it's very comprehensive. cellodiscovery.com
Absolutely beautiful.
Beautiful, so much feeling. Are you using a 7/8 cello?
Never had tapes across the finger boards, only tiny dots on the side of the fingerboard so they're not visible from the front. Enough to see them with my peripheral vision, and I play a lot by ear so it also helps me remember a lot of pieces by pattern memory and it also helps on the long fast shifts. I'm going to keep them forever, rather look like a noob and surprise people than the other way around 🤣 I have tapes on 1,3,4 then 0 which corresponds to the next open string, then the pattern repeats with 1,3,4 so instead of playing the first position on the A string I can do it on the D string as well and follow the same pattern. So if I know where C is on the A string it's in the same place as the pattern on the D string.
That is some GOOD PLAYING ! That old stump sounds pretty good ! Rich harmonics ! How old is that cello ? Very good intonation !! You have a great ear 👂 !!
Aaaw, thanks. Most of the "old stump" is about 350 years old. :)
@@cellodiscovery Wow ! THAT is why it sounds so good ! Is it an Amati ? Or older ? 😛. ( I know ...I know ....Amati INVENTED it !!😛)
called me out on many of these 😁 yes that ⅞th size sounds nice as a beginner. my full size instrument is a bit big for my hand stretch (& I'm tall), as a beginner. the whole posture of everything is also a leap, plus my teacher also has different finger lengths than me
I've always been afraid to mark my music because I know later I'll find better patterns and just muddy the whole sheet.
I totally get that - but sometimes it's hard to remember what we did the first time. That's why it's good to mark it. But.. be sure to mark it with pencil. :)
If I get a cello, would I be cheating on my viola? 🤔
Haha! No. ;) You are just getting to know another member of the family.
bello? Che partitura è? o dove si trova?
I first learned to play at the age of 10 when the intermediate school orchestra teacher came to our class every week for lessons. I fell in love with the cello enough that my parents paid for weekly professional lessons from the first chair cellist in our city philharmonic. As most children do when they grow up, my interest changed and I grew bored. Near the end of high school I leaned into the passion again and rented to buy with my lifeguard money. I’ve owned a cello for 7 years now but unfortunately never got motivated enough to play consistently. I take it out once a year for several weeks then it goes back in the corner. It’s that time again and I really want to devote myself to being good enough to play in the worship band at church. Your channel has inspired me, I’m getting new strings today to jump start my journey again!
Good for you! Perhaps join us in Cello Discovery?! We have so much material (video lessons) and interactive scores, weekly zoom lessons, a welcoming community, and virtual cello choir. It's a lot of fun and you can get plenty of good information for a very reasonable price. :)
ooooooooø ccccccccccccccccccč, yara
Man! What a beautiful piece! And beautifully played. I can't tell if Carolyn is just doing a marvelous job of interpretation or if her cello is telling us beautiful story!
So touching and deep. TY
absolutely love it!
wonderful to be able to play together while being physically remote. Bravo all players and bravo, Carolyn!!!
