    Crazy adventure, glad you made it back out! That reminds me of a several different situations on hikes or camping trips over the years where things went way different/worse than planned and became differnt types of survival situations. Lukily they also all turned out OK. I thought I might see a Kni-Co stove, though your collapsible stove made more sense for your trip because it packs smaller and probably weighs less than my Trekker. I have been camping right by my car while I have been getting used to my stove.

Dont buy an expensive ultra light framless pack if you are a beginner and plan on shoving 28 Lbs of stuff into it.. your better off with a cheaper framed back pack!

    @RicMor200 5 днів тому

    Thanks for sharing. Nice video. I believe the concept of base weight is not meant to be used alone. You should always know the total weight of your backpack before you head out the door. Base weight is useful to compare apples to apples between different systems you've used on one trip versus another, or to compare it with someone else's system. For example, if my friend and I are going on a week-long trek, and both of our packs weigh in at around 20Lbs, but his pack is 7 Lbs base weight and 13 Lbs consumibles, whereas mine is 12 Lbs base weight and 8 consumibles, that's a reason for concern. Either he's packing way more food and water than he'll ever use and maybe not enough gear, or I'm packing too much gear and not enough food and water. In a situation like that the easiest way to spot the inconsistencies is to have a closer look at the base weights, and then the consumibles and compare. But if we don't know in detail what we're carrying, we might just get complacent and assume that everything's fine because we're both carrying about 20 Lbs each.

    Baseweight don't matter because the most important thing is to get out on the trail. But it is easyer to walk the trail with a light backpack, so weight matter. The lightest gear that does the job of keeping you warm, dry, safe and comfortable enough is the gear to pick😊.

    Thanks for this - I stopped watching any videos that had to do with base weight ages ago but clicked on this immediately! I do what I can to make my pack light, but there are luxuries I sometimes won't do without, plus I hike with a dog, which means I'm carrying all his gear & food. He's too small to carry his own - he is only 12 lbs - but eats a lot of food to have the energy to hike all day. My biggest complaint about all those 'base weight' claims, is that often it really is NOT base weight, it is their 'big 3' weight - no clothes, no rain gear, no headlamp, no water bottle, no water filter... I have the weight of every item I might take on any given hike or backpacking trip, entered into a spread sheet. Then I 'build' my pack based on where I'm hiking, how many days, weather, etc. I decide which pack I'll need (40L or 60L) and do a test pack of the gear I've selected, and weigh my pack with my empty bear vault and empty water bottles. I do include my alcohol for my stove and all other consumables other than food and water in this test pack. When I weigh the pack, I consider THAT to be my 'base weight'. I know I'll start with x number of days of food, and hopefully full water bottles every morning. As long as my 'base weight' is below an amount I've set for myself, I know I'll be good to add my food and water. I may have the gram weight of every item I might take, but I've never tried to get my 'base weight' down to some 'bragging level' like so many videos you see out there. My pack weighs what it weighs. LOL

    I am 68 retired 7 months winter backpacked when I was in high school. Getting back into winter backpacking/camping (20 to 30 deg F) traveling just 5 miles per day. I walk about 2 miles take a break for about 30 min then continue until I get to camp, so an easy walk. Last winter I started testing my equipment. For an overnight my pack weight is 35 lbs. I carry a few extra items because I like to be warm and comfortable. 2 person tent, large 85 litter back pack, 3 sleeping pads, 2 sleeping bags, a stick stove and a camp chair. I love my stick stove because I like having a fire while I drink my tea and eat my cookies. Just changed my sleep system so I will be testing my gear tonight. In the desert where you can't find water, and it's 30°C you're gonna need twice that amount of water unless maybe you hike only around dawn. So yeah in those conditions, baseweight is totally negligible. What's hilarious is that I follow the channel of some guys who hike in southern France and have fun bringing the most comfort possible. Usually not in terms of bedding or tent, but in terms of cooking. So they'll bring a cast iron pan, a T bone steak, a magnum sized bottle of wine, a 1 kg block of cheese, fancy knives etc... And they still do 1000 m of elevation gain per day, they just do it slowly. But they're extra motivated coz they know they have this amazing reward at the end of the day. So like you, I 100% think that depriving yourself of comfort for the sake of packing light is counter productive. A propper inflatable sleeping pad is definitely worth it. A good pillow, same thing. And that ultra light gear is so ridiculously expensive and fragile, it's not worth it. Joey from My Own Frontier will bring beers, like 2 or 3, and again, that keeps moral high. Instead, maybe remove that drone, that heavy 4K camera.

    • @WallowaHikes
      @WallowaHikes 5 днів тому

      @@nicolasbertin8552 My goodness, I can't imagine bringing all that stuff... But I guess each person ultimately decides what's worth the extra weight. I love having some extra comfort items, and on shorter trips it's easier to bring some extras... Just not at the cost of safety. Maybe I need to find a friend willing to carry the cast iron pan and block of cheese. 🙂. Thanks for taking the time to share!

      Thanks for sharing this content I learned about some amazing hikes. While not a tall, long or strenuous hike, Sandstone Peak which stands 3K feet above the Malibu area in SoCal is noteworthy. There’s a 6 mile loop via the Mishe Mokwa trail that provides a neat experience up to the peak. Many very experienced hikers and local wannabes all have it highly ranked. The Coastal and Valley views from the peak on a clear day are breathtaking. You can also grab lunch and a cold beer at the locally famous Neptunes Net restaurant nearby after the hike for a truly great experience

    love the regular groundhogs for camping above the polar circle and above the treeline, they can take a beating and hasn't bent the 70 days I've been in the mountains the past two years. not lightest or smallest, but pretty light and bomber.

    I don’t know about other places but here in NY the NYS dec website has tons of info on hiking trails also the ADK clubs is another option. I am sure other states have similar resources. I also always bring my little folding saw only use it maybe every third trip or so and then mostly for cleaning up blow down. If they are in season I think eating some berries is fine, I know around here ramps are sort of controversial review your local regulations.

    I think its a combination of things. Tent/pad/bag/clothes/hot water bottles? I looked at fill weigh over temp rating, 2 years ago when look for a bag. Ive taken my 0 down to -17F testing in back yard. Nemo sonic 0, dont think they make it anymore... id love to get a -20 in same stylenthatbwas made back then!
