Filming a Cinematic Doorway scene - Budget Lighting
Переглядів 2,2 тис.5 місяців тому
In this video we take a look at creating a cinematic doorway scene, something you'll probably see in most films. The approach to lighting this scene is budget friendly and in an indie film making style whilst trying to achieve a high quality look and feel. *NOTE* I did by mistake break the 180 rule, so please ignore that. The idea in the video is the lighting concept more so. Hope you can still...

Her smile at the end made no sense at all!!!
What is your technique, exactly? Using false colour and inspecting visually in the hopes that you aren't clipping highlights? Why not just use zebras, then?
Not hoping, using false colour is just one of many tools like waveform, zebras, histogram that all allow you to judge exposure. It’s whatever tool you find best works for you, I like to use false colour because it tells me exactly what parts of the image are too dark or bright etc. and I also use histogram as well. I think having a couple of exposure tools to judge from helps you get a better informed view. If you prefer to use zebras to judge clipping parts of the image then that’s totally fine as well. Hope that helps.
@@_jonkent Thanks, but this doesn't really answer my question. I understand exposure, that's why I mention zebras, which are the single most objective method of checking for blown highlights. I was asking about *your* method, which is not clear (sorry). You conduct tests, but the method underlying the tests is largely implicit, so the results are not entirely clear (sorry).
@ okay, sorry for the confusion. I’ll just layout my whole process: So attaching the nd filter to the lens first. Set up the scene, adjusting my lights to my liking and dial in the ratio, this is judged by eye and false colour ( I flick it on and off). I look at where the skin tone is falling (50IRE) and then the lamp (70IRE) and then the background (20ire). Once I’m happy with how the image looks and where the brightness and darkness of the image is laying out. Then I open up the nd filter and using false colour I see when something hits red. (100ire) this is where something is clipping and loosing information. That’s as far as I can push the exposure because I would be losing data in that area. My ratios are all the same so when I lower the exposure in post, it’s back to how I set it all originally. That’s my process, as I said I try to use one or two exposure tools and then just looking at the monitor to judge. Also keeping in mind how bright is my monitor. Also note that those numbers for the ire are just examples, it’s totally a creative decision, skin is normally set to 50/70 ire but again it depends on the situation and story and creative choice. Hopefully that answers your question. The red part of false colour signifies clipping just as setting the zebras to 100 would. So you could use both false Colour and zebras to be sure on clipping parts. Zebras however wouldn’t tell you what other exposure parts of the image are like false colour does, that’s why I use that, because I can judge everything in the image from black to pure white, everything in between and see where in the image those are falling. It’s definitely not “hoping” I’m not clipping.
@@_jonkent That is much clearer, thanks!
@ no problem, glad i could help 👍
The only interesting part was the kids in the beginning and the graphics at the very end. Everything in between was boring 😴
Sorry you didn't enjoy, but thank you for taking the time. I'm planing on shooting a feature length version of this in the future, so if theres anything you would like to see? This short was more of a project for myself to see what i could do and the story is much bigger. ]
@_jonkent It needs a lot honestly. The beginning could be a much better intro if you showed the kids talking to the police as they're shaking and crying after being traumatized. Give the characters more depth. But that's just my opinion. Don't leave the suspenseful gaps too long. The scenes of her walking were too drawn out. Might also help to hire a more memorable detective because the actor is weak. I'm only providing feedback as a horror fan. Good luck.
@MissMadHatterLife thank you got the feedback, much appreciated 🙏

@_jonkent yes that was me 😁thank you so much for the ebook! I was asking for the transition in the beginning, that was super cool. I'm not sure what software do you use for Post-Production but I use premiere.
@@carola.sayago you're welcome! do you mean the scroll to intro the title? so i use Premiere pro and alot of After Effects. I saw a couple of films that inspired that transition - "Mank" and "Nope". So yes, it’s one of those things where life happens, I had a little boy after making it and work full time whilst trying to make videos and short films for UA-cam. I want to make the ogress feature film, I’m slowly working on a script in the background and the goal is to one day make that, document the journey and then release the film.
