The Howard County Bird Club, a chapter of the Maryland Ornithological Society. Our mission is to promote the knowledge, development, protection, and conservation of bird life and other naturally occurring species and their habitats.
The 2023 Howard County Butterfly Survey Results: Kevin Heffernan
For the sixth year in a row, Kevin Heffernan will update us on the status of butterflies in Howard County. Kevin is the Co-chair of the Howard County, Maryland, Butterfly Survey. He is a past president of the Howard County Bird Club and is encouraging the planting of native pollinator gardens as part of the Howard Bee City Pollinator Committee, and the Habitat Creation and Enhancement and Pesticide Reduction Subcommittees.

Common Tern Raft: Kim Abplanalp

In 2021, a floating island or raft was constructed to provide breeding habitat for Common Terns and placed in Chincoteague Bay near Assateague Island. Originally 32′ x 32′, in 2022 the raft was expanded to 48’x48′, more than double its original size. In 2021, its pilot year, the raft had 23 nests and 22 fledglings.
