Scouting For Elk In Colorado - Part 2 (In The Field)
Переглядів 1,3 тис.6 років тому
In today's Part 2 video, I take my digital scouting efforts into the field where I validate what I showed previously from the computer during Part 1. I am showcasing what elk habitat looks like from eye level and why elk spend a lot of time in these areas. The purpose is to give you a good idea of where you can expect to find them during early archery season as they are moving from their Summer...

Hanging Cameras In Kansas With Big Tine
Переглядів 2,1 тис.7 років тому
One of the strategies that I use for Summer whitetail scouting in Kansas is running trail cameras to get an inventory of resident bucks. I use Big Tine at camera locations because it's a powerful attractant and I've seen success with it first hand over the past few years. Follow along with me as I prep for the 2017 deer season! Transition Wild - Target Practice Shooting Heavy Grain Arrows
Переглядів 3,6 тис.7 років тому
For the 2017 season, I've elected to go with heavier arrows in an effort to improve arrow penetration on larger game such as elk. This year my total arrow weight (including a 125-grain head) is 560 grains per arrow while last year I was only shooting approximately 420 grains. After my initial shots this past weekend, I think they are going to do the trick. I apologize for some parts of bad audi...

Shed Hunting In Colorado
Переглядів 4,2 тис.7 років тому
I spent the day shed hunting in Colorado and picked up five mule deer sheds and one old elk shed. I apologize for the out of focus shots and bad editing that make up the majority of this video. This was my first time running that camera and self-filming. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed it! Check out my blog at: www.transitionwild.com

Hi
Got your turkey call today and it doesn't work doesn't sound like any turkey I've heard
What's the difference between the Mako X and Mako HD?
Did you find out? I just bought the HD. From what I understand it has a different "updated" cam system. I'm planning to call Xpedition next week.
@@DingleBerryschnapps no I never found out.
Beautiful and great video good sir!
I couldn't find the downloadable GMU file on the Huntin Fool website. Do you have to be a member to access that? Thanks
are these map data sets available for other states like Wyoming or only CO?
I really like the cow cows!!!!!! However they need to go back to the drawing board on the bugle. That Bugle is not good. I actually just ordered a cow call yesterday from them but man they need a big revamp on the Bugle
You can change the opacity of those areas pretty easily if you want. Right-click the master folder "Elk migration corridors" for instance. Go to "get info" then "style, colors". From there you can select to have all the descendant folders take the same format, and you can make the layers more transparent.
I know where he is at.
Instead of turning layers on and off, just select one (or the parent folder), then press the transparency selector at the bottom of the places tab and adjust the slider so you can see through the layers.
But you aim straight up leg then if you pull right now you hit were everyone else is aiming for
There are no elk in Colorado!!
Is there a way to do this on mobile?
Great tip. My wife and I will be using this! Heard about it on your podcast that I found on a Google search Thanks man.
Since this video was made, the huntinfool website has changed its landing page. Do I need to become a member to continue with huntinfool?
I watched your video and tried to follow the steps to get the overlays ... but Google earth must have changed its layout in the past few years cuz nuthin worked. Do you have an updated tutorial using the most current version of Google earth?
Thanks for sharing this information. Hoping you do a more in depth video of this type of scouting. Maybe you could pick a unit out that you don’t hunt and get more in the weeds with what/how you look. Truly Appreciate what info you have shared. I have been successful helping family and friends harvest elk in eastern Kentucky but will hopefully be headed out West for my first time this year.
You should shoot a tree with those see how much they penetrate through it
Hey man sorry to bother you. I just had a question. I’m going to be in Colorado this May and I was wondering if you could Give me any tips to maybe find some elk or mulie sheds. Not expecting you to give me your spots but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks man!
Hey Lucas. That's great that you will be doing some shed hunting in Colorado this spring. It's always fun to get out and pick up some sheds. I highly recommend that you watch this video on shed hunting. It shows you wintering areas on Google Earth which will be where the animals will be dropping antlers. ua-cam.com/video/PuVvQMpryoo/v-deo.html Also, check out my site transitionwild.com. I have a bunch of articles on shed hunting. Just click the shed hunting icon on the home page.
Am I able to use the Pca on any tripod like if i have a vangaurd tripod?
You have very strong arm drawing a bow like that
So I've been told.
nice
Great job! I've been using Google Earth for years along with these overlays. You are a great instructor!
Thank you David! It sure is a useful tool!
Great video! Just finished getting it all set up on my computer and now to start playing with it. Heading up into GMU 80/81 this fall for rifle elk and this will be very helpful. Thx for Posting!
Thank you! Glad you found it useful and good luck this fall in Colorado!
I wouldnt call that a heavy grain arrow. More of a moderate weight arrow. In my opinion no hunting arrow should be below 500 grain total weight.
??? I stated at the beginning of the video and in the description above that my total arrow weight is 560 grains.
@@transitionwild9595 right, so that would be a light hunting arrow.
Bowfishinfreak1 for buffalo, yes it would be considered light. For elk and deer, it would be considered heavy. Majority of hunting setups are between 400-450.
We will have to agree to disagree. I feel people gotta get off the speed and kinetic bandwagon and really look at what matters and that's forward weight and momentum. I run a 650 grain total weight at 19% foc with a monolithic single bevel broadhead for whitetail and pigs. And get 100% pass throughs no matter what bones it hits. Thanks for taking the time to comment back.!!!!
@@Bowfishinfreak1 LOL at your argument that 560 grain is a "light hunting arrow." Sounds like you are all hung up on the heavy arrow, extreme foc bandwagon. Momentum is great and a quiet bow is even better but to completely ignore trajectory as it relates to your possible shot opportunities is short-sighted. Every hunter is going to have a different idea of what makes their perfect arrow, based on how they are going to use it. The variables that influence that decision should run much deeper than hoping you can break bone if you make a bad shot. With all this being said, I think 600 grains is great at short distances. Beyond 30-40 yards, heavy arrows start to nose dive and pin gap really starts to stretch out. Accurate estimation of shot distances is more critical with heavy arrows, as is the estimation of trajectory if you have to squeeze one through a small shot window. I'm not arguing against heavy arrows, just pointing out that there are disadvantages that go along with the obvious advantages.
I own one and it sucks(very unreliable and non functional) the legs collapse most of the time when supporting a rifle on them. They flex and wobble making consistent practice shots highly unlikely- this guy must get free things to review because his stement "I highly recommend it go checkem out" is terrible advice.
Sorry you have had a bad experience with your tripod. I've been extremely happy with my BOG tripod system and have been using it for almost three years now while shed hunting, rifle hunting, filming, scouting, etc. If you're having troubles, reach out to them directly so that they can figure out what's going on: www.btibrands.com/contact/
I need this ASAP 👌🏹🦌🇺🇸
Yeah, you do! Game changer for rifle hunting and glassing. Highly recommend the Bog Pod!
I see you have a folder marked public land any chance there is a layout to show public lands on the units?
That folder is for Iowa. Unfortunately, there is not a good overlay for Colorado public land outlines, at least from what I've found. You can get the national forest areas overlay by going to the "More" Folder and then checking the "Parks/Recreation" Box. That will give you the national forest overlay but not BLM. I use OnXmaps to determine the public land areas and cross back and forth between Google Earth and OnXmaps. Thanks for watching, Gene!
Check out onxmaps.com
Does Arizona have a species map?
Colorado native, will be going out hunting for the 1st time since my dad passed many years ago with my brother for elk (cow). Excited but overwhelming realizing how much work goes into it when you don't have an experienced elder as a guide doing most of the work. My brother and I were kids last time we went. Doing our due diligence and planning our hunt in depth and gathering everything we need. What is the easiest way to use this for planning in relation to land ownership in your unit?
Hi Taylor - Sounds like you are gearing up for a great hunt in the near future! The best tool hands down is onXmaps. Download the APP and you can use it as your GPS and marking locations, trails, etc. It also shows land ownership so you know where the public land boundaries are. It's $35 a year per state but well worth it in my opinion. You can usually find discount codes to purchase it by checking out Randy Newberg's website. Good luck this Fall!
@@transitionwild9595 Thanks so much! Super helpful. This is the missing piece between your video and public land. Your videos are great. Much appreciated.
Looking for the overlay map for AZ.
I need a new Mexico map
Yeah I wish all states would do this - very helpful!
Awesome review. I've been trying to figure out how the PCA swivel works for forward, backward, and side to side movement with locking. Definitely buying this now because My Vortex tripod is losing its legs.
Thanks Joshua! I love my Bog Pod with the PCA - killer setup in my opinion! Good luck this season!
Thanks, got on a 5x4 at 10 yards at last light yesterday here in AZ for the velvet archery season. Couldn't tell which side he was on so I stalked left and he was on the right and stayed out of view through the thick. So fun though. Planning on using BogPod with glassing and predator hunting here as well as filming with my DSLR.
That's awesome Josh! I hope you get him but either way, it's always a good time to be outside!
How can i get habitat into for utah to put on Google earth
Great job!
Glad to hear you mention thermals! I deal with those surprisingly here in IA, and we use those thermal in the morning to our advantage. Listen “The Hunting Public” podcast on thermals, extremely helpful on how to use them. I’m sure it is close to the same in any terrain with hills or mountains. Another great video Adam, keep them coming!!
Thanks Scott! Yes - thermals are a big part of both elk and whitetail hunting! Many of hunts have went south due to thermals. haha Appreciate ya watching, Scott!
Another great video! I'm doing a bunch of digital scouting from the east coast and will be spending a week in Colorado come August to put some boots to the ground. Thanks for the tips! Very helpful!
Thanks Alex! Digital scouting is key! Glad to hear you are making your way out to Colorado to get your hands dirty soon!
Awesome video. From someone who's never been elk hunting (midwest whitetail hunter), but wants to badly, these are super informative. I'm big into studying maps, so this scouting series is right up my alley. Keep up the good work, man.
Thanks Justin! I'm glad these videos are helpful to you and hopefully it shortens the learning curve when you decide to go on your first elk hunt! Thanks again for watching
I`m completely new to elk hunting, I seen your video man. How successful are you with this method so far? I like to know if you can possible update the elks moves in 2019? That`s when me & my best friends will be going.
Thanks for watching, Chase! It's definitely a good method to get you in the ballpark, but then you will have to disect smaller areas to really hone in on elk. Make sure you are subscribed to my channel because I'm posting a digital elk scouting series (2 videos) of how to find elk via google earth and onXmaps. Good luck in 2019!
Being an old fart it take me a while to learn this but it will be so useful. Thank you.
Good lord be careful with your shoulder drawing the bow that way.
everyone is different bro. My shoulder is just fine.
No kidding. Good lord. Keep elbow high. Watch the pros. Watch the indoor nationals and watch the way you’re supposed to. Can’t hate on learning from the best of the best
nice .....I am shooting 770 grains.....my crossbow now has recoil...and is very quiet... . and super penetration with 2 blade single bevel broad heads... ..... 250 and 300 grain broad heads .....100 grain broad heads are for shooting rabbits and birds......
Sweet! Sounds like a good setup. For 2018, I dropped down a bit in overall weight. I think I went a bit too heavy last year. It's all about balance between speed and penetration.
Well done sir!
What is your arrow setup
I was shooting element arrows. I have since switched to Black Eagle 300 spines.
Have you ever used the path profile feature? It is awesome to use as you plan your path to see your vertical climb along your path. Just create your path and save it, then mouse over the path and right click on it and got down to "Show Elevation Profile" and it will bring up a profile of your path at the bottom of the screen. Really helpful tool. Thanks for doing this video, it was great.
I have used that - very helpful indeed! It is definitely nice to see how far you have to travel and the elevation you have to cover. Thanks for watching!
As a guy that sets behind his desk all day at work.... Google Earth has been one of the best digital scouting tools I have come across. I have downloaded a file that overlays a topo map over the entire globe and can turn on and shut off that layer anytime to get the contours and topo info like springs and trails and things when I need it. Such a cool tool.
That topo overlay sounds badass. Where can I find that link to download?
Let me see if I can find it again.
Find us on Instagram and DM me your email address.
Where in Colorado is this area in??? I moved here a few years ago but I just don’t know where to shed hunt here
Hey man - sorry for the late reply. I'm around the glenwood area. Check out this article I wrote on my site! It is packed with some good info to get off and running: transitionwild.com/beginner-colorado-shed-hunting-tips/
Thanks for the posting, but you gave away my secret weapon. This explains why I'm see so many new faces the further back I go.
You're welcome. I didn't give it away, this is public information provided by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Plenty of room out there for everyone. Best of luck in 2018 and thanks for watching!
Agreed. It's just that not everyone knows this. Colorado has been great with their information on all species like identifying migration areas, wintering grounds etc. I just wish some of the other states would do the same cause its starting to get more like gambling these days with more hunters out in the field. I've backpack and horse packed most of my hunts and now I'm seeing tons of people in areas I never thought they'd be. Anyhow, good job and I wish you luck this year in the draws. As for me I'm looking to go OTC if I don't draw in my home state AZ (home state) or in NM. I never liked playing the points game.
Yeah I hear ya. Gone are the days of leaving everyone behind. I think success is all about getting creative and hunting smart, instead of trying to "out-muscle" everyone. Good luck to you as well!
looks like the gunnison or steamboat area
The buck that dropped the fresh, single, w/the long, back tine was mixed up how his antler was supposed to fork. Nice, unique find.
Thank you! Yeah, he is a unique buck for sure. I've never seen one like that before. Thanks for watching :)
At 4:24 you say to click on the folder and it should bring up a menu. My file is not doing this. Please help.
Try this link: cpw.state.co.us/learn/Pages/KMZ-Maps.aspx It should bring up all the species. Scroll down to elk and the click on "Click To Download" for the map overlays. If you are not able to download, it might have something to do with your computer settings.
Transition Wild I will try that when I get to my laptop. Thank you very much.
