Why Does Leveling Have To Be So Painful In Path Of Exile? In this video I talk about leveling in Path of Exile and the community's opinions on it, which usually ends up being very negative. Usually the leveling process takes like very small amount of your total playthrough of PoE but it ends up being the most hated. Comprehensive Forbidden Sanctum Guide For Path Of Exile
my problem with ailments is: it's easier to get full ailment immunity. There's barely any 1-type ailment immunities unless you want to use garbage uniques that even in the best of times were considered trash, often with r-word-ed downsides. Another thing: both easiest ways to get full ailment immunities, outside of Purity of Elements, are mods on boots (with combination of abyss eyes). We simply need more small amounts of ailment avoidances/immunities. Stuns - same as ailment immunity. better to get full avoidance, or die because of 10%. I had an ES trickster with 80% avoidance and my gameplay was awful. Not "bad" or "weak", but awful. Everything and i mean every-single-hit has 20% to stun you. You get hit tens, if not hundreds of times a minute. Without full immunity you might aswell remove any non-instant dash ability, as monsters will kick you out of those. The chance of getting stunned as non-armour stacker is just ridiculous... And even then you'd rather invest in unwavering stance, because you will still get stunned from time to time. Stun/petrification-chains should never be allowed. I can bet anyone everything in my wallet that if community united and demanded the change from ggg, we'd get it next league... But as long as there's no movement, ggg is totally fine with this. Imo ggg should remove all trash mods like light radius or return damage and add specific ailment immunities along with stun treshold/stun avoidances in those places. Also i know we have essences that kind of cover that... but crafting with essences is about as much "crafting" as spinning 1handed bandid in a casino. Corrupted Blood is literally, no joke, a reflect damage in form of a dot. - i hate it. it should just go away. It adds nothing beyond yet another arbitrary checkbox. Speaking of reflected damage... That thing should be hard-nerfed and sources of reflect immunity aswell. add reflect chance to altars with something like 1-2-3% tops. It should be difficult, not "this mod instakill you if you dont have a flask with a mageblood"
I love PoE but it has a bit too many "have this checked or die randomly" checkboxes.
You'd have to nerf player power significantly in order to do something about that, which wouldn't go over well at all. The problem is that if something doesn't kill a well-built character instantly, that thing usually can't kill it at all. This is one reason why PoE2 being slowed down a bunch is a good thing.
@@Zevrael Well in later progressions you have all the boxes checked so it is only a annoyance early on. Bu I agree that slowing down PoE 2 is a good thing but only IF the rewards are worth the slower and harder encounters. I am a gamer with job and family so it already takes me a month and above to have my character comfortably do T17 and ubers.
@@Erdbeerenserver T17s and ubers are aspirational content. Players like you aren't supposed to get there at all. You're saying you don't get there quickly enough. What a nice problem to have. And what a nice way of summarizing PoE1's problems.
@@Zevrael So you are saying only no lifers should be allowed to play the most rewarding content? Face it, scarab economy is tweaked around T 17 and non uber bossing might as well not exist. Blame ggg for balancing the game in such a way.
@@Erdbeerenserver Yes, that is what I'm saying. If the average invested player (not talking about beginners) can clear all content every league, the game is too easy. Yes, non-uber bossing should probably be a more profitable endeavour relative to other activities than it is right now, but being able to clear more difficult content should always be significantly more rewarding. This in itself is not a problem.
Stun is definitely a problem that needs to solved for a character early on, but especially difficult for top side of the tree. For my league start I went slayer and chose Endless Hunger before Headsman because it was more efficient point wise compared to nodes on the tree or abyss jewels. I changed over after tattoos and chest craft gave 100%. Shield mastery gives 30% avoidance which is nice but most nodes give block recovery instead, which as you said, is mostly a redundant stat. I'd hate to suggest a stun immune aura because then I'd be running purity of elements and this aura on every character until yellow maps. Alternate ailments are a sore spot for a lot of builds especially with the pressure it puts on resistance. 135% base, +35% for Curses, 30% for Scorch and 10% for Exposure. But a big sore spot for most of my builds is crit resistance. There just doesn't seem to be many avenues for it, with shields being the primary method.
Because of power creep GGG just keep shoe horning in ways for the monsters to fuck up. Now we have all the curses and ailments and alt ailments and many slows that we can't do that monsters can do to us. ALSO they can apply exposers for even more - res and impale for example. Why the hell can the monsters do everything we can do to us that we do to them and then some. Like silence for example? What a boring binary thing, like corrupted blood. You're either immune to it or you're not, get fucking rid of that trash.
....are you wearing the hat Jack Nicholson worse in the first batman film?
Its incredible how your videos are so well put together, with a nice pace and interesting subject. Keep it up! About the subject, I think its a bad design having either immunity to something or having to deal with it, POE could add more intermediate layers to these kind of defenses, so you dont have to "solve it" and instead you decide which layer the build is getting at some point. Anyway, I know its a hard task to balance these mechanics in a fair and interesting way. GL GGG
I was surprised when he said 30 comments were a lot given the quality of the videos.
the fun part is when you chaos/essence spam a rare item for a mod that doesnt even exist on that item since its not influenced
the more tools they give us the more things they make that make those tools feel just as bad to have as when you didnt have it before ... basically grinding back what you already had and calling it a buff
i love purity of elements and arctic armour giving freeze immunity ... wish more auras gave more effects like that
poe1 is too much checklist ... 9 times out of 10 the answer is to just be immune to a problem before you encounter it because if you do your dead no matter what
Yo dude what do you think or warden hexblast with scorch and shock? The backspin wouldn't be needed for sanctum
ehhhh you'd be sacrificing any other potential value in the ascendancy for +67% inc damage from shocks and roughly -45% res as a good estimated value of double scorch (likely closer to 50/55 with some ailment effect scaling) I don't the idea is bad but I don't see a reason to go about it this way considering you can just opt for occultist or assassin if you wanted to glass cannon dps the build for higher efficacy. there is a world where this performs better than trickster on low budget damage-wise but I hate the idea of giving up 2 frenzies and OSA's throwing speed for starts as well
who? the fuck asked
Yeah man it's very annoying. I hate feeling weak while levelling and first act is just outright depressing. Thankfully we got Runes this League so subsequent characters are absolute JOY to level since Wolves and Envy DESTROY everything in first acts.
yeah, i really dont understand the leveling skills, theres always just 4-6 that are actually decent leveling skills. Whenever i try to level something off meta i just feel like im wasting my time when i could just use meta, why wtf does GGG even care if all skills op early? Other than that though, i feel like there needs to be a barrier to entry, i really dont think characters should have access to endgame at lvl 1, i feel like endgame should be a reward.
Issue is when GGG said they were gonna make acts 1-2 harder, their idea of that was aimbot perma freeze, stunning Rhoas, and insanely high damage numbers; rather than by making the earlier stages of the game more mechanically engaging, which would be interesting.
@@Geist1337 I don't think you know what aimbot is. The only thing they got to work like that is hillrake, whom I can kill without getting hit once (when not fully melee). Other than that if your game style is hold right click and look at the other monitor - yes, everything will feel like "aimbot". Get cold resist in act 1, add lightning resist in act 2, and a bit of fire throughout both acts and it's very easy. Even basic items with armor/evasion give so much that to die you have to actively aim to be bad.
@@Kuzka_ Hailrake is easy. Even if you don't hold right click and look away your attack and animation speed early on is snail speed so you'll get auto hit by almost anything that you don't skip, and 9 times out of 10 in areas with water elementals, get caught in a freeze. Because sapphire rings require level 8 and so are basically inaccessible until Merveil. I play the campaign through without dying regularly so I know it's still doable - and easily. But that's for an experienced player. And their idea of difficulty being more freeze and more stun is unimaginative and bland, and punishing for any newer or less experienced players, on top of just not being interesting for anyone who can play around it. It's bad design.
@Geist1337 You're literally describing a single location - Submerged Passage. I would argue that showing new players that the game doesn't pull punches is the right way. Because if you make the tutorial too easy, they're gonna hit their head into the wall that is reduced resistances + scaling of maps. And then other people will complain like you do that the game has to be easier. You even get a movement skill from quest just by entering the submerged passage... The only thing I would say they should do is to make more obvious what type of danger the new player will encounter. Add info to locations that say, for example "Dangerous monsters that freeze their prey to death". At least it would add lore that people would read
Friends and I have discussed these things a LOT. Best we have come up with is that each league should require playing through the campaign at least 1 time. But, if you have played through the campaign a total of 10 times, you should be able to skip the campaign on further characters that league. If you have played the campaign 3 times in one league, you shouldn't be required to play through it again that league. In lieu of the campaign, they should allow a sort of 'mini-league' type progression like they have done at times, and be open for players to do either Delve, Heist, etc, instead for leveling up, and Lilly would of course be available for getting skill and support gems (as the player unlocked her during that 1 mandatory campaign run). The only reason for requiring that first run is that when a league is starting, there is serious competition to be the 'first' to do all kinds of things, so it would be very unfair to a lot of players to be allowed to skip it right off the bat. The debuff given each time after fighting Kitava would be handed to the player first time at Level 50, and again at 70 if they chose to skip campaign. Other stuff like that, but this way they could just go grind away in the delve, or do heists, or whatever. Of course, this would require allowing the player to find Sulphite or Heists within their respective areas, though, which would end at Level 70, as that would be considered the start of Maps. I'm certain there are some issues with these ideas, but makes zero sense on a great deal of things players have to deal with. Hopefully, the PoE2 way of things will be way better.
I’ve got a few takes on it. On one side, it is annoying that I can’t just pick any skill and make it work, on the other hand…you have been left for dead on a beach as an exile: survive and overcome 🤷🏾♂️. First time I played, I didn’t even make it to mud flats before just totally giving up. This was due to a lack of game knowledge (I don’t know about scaling, or armor types, anything). I just couldn’t kill anything and was absolutely lost! And don’t get me started on the skill tree at first glance, like wtf!? The thing was, I fancied creating my own unique build and didn’t want to rely on a build guide so that created a massive problem. After I stepped away, a friend urged me to try again with a build guide which I had success with. This is an issue that (though possibly addressed in PoE2) should be tuned for. Scaling all gem damage, nerfing all basic monster in act 1, better tool tips for the tutorial option, more currency or require vendor to only need wisdom scrolls or something less restrictive. Let the first 10-20 levels have free respecs even! That way you’re not just stuck feeling like a dumbass while the yellow text pops up cuz someone just hit act 3 while you can’t kill a pact of rhoas 😅 The guided play through was rough, but I succeeded in completing the campaign. My gripes on this play through was gearing (no currency to buy nor craft) and resistances. I barely understood linking and colors, finally got decent gear, and after act 5 you’re telling me I have to try to find gear with better resistances? And if you try to go without it, you get tapped by white mobs in twighlight strand almost instantly! And don’t get me started on obtaining a six link! However, figured it out and kept pushing. Improvements at this level could be to reduce resistances by a lower amount vs. 30% or, leave chaos at 0% so you only have to worry about elemental. Oh, and let me add, I started on console where trading is absolute dogshit! Inflation and afk sellers like a mf. Now, after multiple toons (and switching to pc), I feel like it’s more of a planning thing. For settlers 2.0 I played warden, and chose to experiment a bit (deviating from a Poe ninja build). Longest campaign run in a while but…I enjoyed it? I mean, minus meat sacks pushing my shit in at mud flats, I somewhat enjoyed using the knowledge I’ve gained to overcome the difficulty: leveling my main gem in my off hand, always check vendor and scrap everything to buy more currency, craft elemental rings through crap gems I find, etc. But that’s after 2000+ hours. Looking back on my time playing, if it hadn’t been for my friend urging me to try again, I would have just stopped. Not everyone has that friend. Not everyone is excited by solving problems. These are just a few of the issues I can think of from my short time playing that, if fixed, I know would retain or entice more players. Rant/flashbacks done 😂
i hope this is addressed in POE 2, the idea of "levelling builds" and the respecing into your real build at like level 70 was always insanity to me.
woahhh Jacob encounter in the wild
Cry more
Part of the problem is that you can't play the content you want to. Maybe if we could delve, heist etc while leveling it would make it more interesting.
all the bosses you mentioned are teaching moments. you prepare for them if you run into them twice. pick up a cold res ring and you're gucci for merveil. also, don't stand in the aoe. mud flats? just fkn zig zag, it's not rocket science.
without leveling there is no game
As a a former hardcore player, that meme doesnt really hit me that hard. But after going over to softcore, I do find it more of a bother to lvl than I did before.
Maybe I'm masochist, but I actually find campaign fun even after 800h in game. Ruthless opened my eyes. Every boss has counterplay (Oak sucks tho), every yellow weapon is potentially +300% dps and your main thing until red maps. It's 10 acts of checking is your build good enough to go to maps. Difficulty spike from maps to pinnacles much more frustrating than campaign, and it's way harder to overcome on ssf. But it's still there, and should be there, to tell players like me "your build has flaws, try to find and fix them", as well campaign doing same thing
I'm just not enthused that all effective builds revolve around a single ability. Seems cool for about a week, but gets real boring real quick afterwards.
Lot of good points here. I'm someone who likes speedrunning the campaign, have played since open beta, and have made likely 100+ characters to maps in HC. I started playing Last Epoch recently and I really like how I can level with skills and switch between them easily. I like that I don't brick my build accidentally and can shift skill points around. I agree, this aspect should be forgiving and it doesn't make the game better to punish new players for learning how to build a character. That said, I do disagree with your points in Act 1: Brutus' difficulty, sea witches, Merveil, etc. I think they're hard and it's good they're hard. I do think the skills should just be better and more fun to use, per your points. Last Epoch has a cool mechanic where you can get through the campaign with shortcuts that challenge you to do a dungeon that's a higher level and puts you through the campaign faster. I've not used it yet but I can see something like that working well in POE. Like a speedrun track that's much harder (higher level mobs, etc) but lets people who have made their dozens of characters to get to maps quicker. What do y'all think?
Yeah I don't actually hate too much the actual character checks that Brutus/Merveil provide so much as I despise the lack of good ways to meet the checks, at least, ways that I'd feel good recommending to other people. I feel like all of LE, D4, and TLI have such a better feel around how to let the player experiment in the campaign and having more of the available skills feel worth experimenting with. Also the dungeon skips in LE are sick. Honestly, you can even shortchange the campaign early with various exit points based on passive points which I also find awesome. I think they could definitely have tried something in POE to that degree, especially with the mechanics they introduce throughout the campaign. Maybe it's something like putting you in a special Domain of Timeless Conflict that juices your xp till you hit lvl 33 to get you jump--started, or even a special Logbook that could pump you out a couple acts ahead after the fact or something like that. Might pose a technical challenge with quest completion states and whatnot though.
Every skill should be able to make it to the end game but sadly 99% of the skills don't do good leveling unless it is the 1% meta builds everyone gravitates to.
99% of the skills in the game have been nerfed so bad and never fixed that it doesn't even make sense to even try to play. So, you left with the Meta builds that GGG never nerfs into ground and it's the same ish every season.
The funny thing is: if you managed to get through the leveling and into the start of endgame, which is maps, you get another kick to the balls by the time you reach guardian maps / endgame bosses because there is another massive gap in difficulty.
Campaign is pure misery. The scaling of dmg and integration of mechanics can be horrendous. Huge jumps to damage and then the next zone will be back to normal? The back half of the campaign just feels like a chore because we're just going around to kill pantheon bosses. I remember when Fall of Oriath launched and the hype around the new acts, and then I played it and was so extremely dissapointed that it was just recycled. I almost always pick a build I am happy to play the entirety of a league because I hate rerolling that much. Horrible.
Nailed biggest reason i stopped playing. No experimenting for intro levels to the game. Im not making another character and re levelling. Came back eventually when the saltiness wore off lol
I don’t get the point here. Easy leveling already exists-it’s called normal mode. You can get unlimited funds and experiment with builds you’ve already created. But people don’t usually play that because they enjoy the challenge and uncertainty in the story arc. And sure, maybe that does get boring after a while, but that’s why you’re not expected to play the same game nonstop for an entire year. Try different games, or go outside and get some sunlight!
Haven't watched the video but yeah leveling is super slow. I play Hardcore exclusively and you gotta be super careful how and where you grind. The fact it takes aeons to level even in standard means it takes much much longer in Hardcore in general.
oh ye the sad part is we USED to have early game freeze immunity ... if you got the quicksilver at lvl 4 there were only like 4 mods you could roll on it ... and one of them was the freeze immunity mod ... but they deleted it now your stuck waiting till act 2 at the earliest because arctic armour and that takes up reservation and a skill slot
It's fun. If you want to level cap instantly, there's D3 and D4 for that.
Why does every sc player want everything for free. Rpg's are all about earning your progress.
most of the poe1 campaign complaints are essentially solved for poe2, which is a shame. imo the most tilting aspect of poe campaign is gear due to socket colour/links. if you find a 4 link with the right colour/link youre basically using that your entire campaign which is just boring/stupid.
Orbs of Binding & Chromatics solve that for you. You only need a couple of each to get great starting gear :) or Alch/Chaos some stuff with early currency. Any currency you find during the campaign should be used like theres no tomorrow.
@@KingfisherMCBy the time you get enough to actually use they are pointless, a1-10 takes 8 hours max, you will sit with your 4 link from for essentially 5-6 hours. You will never have enough freedom to use bindings or chromes when you actually need them(or have them)
@@xinxin9415 Ill admit ive never once had a problem with the amount im finding. Sometimes il Scour/Alch, sometimes Chaos, sometimes Bindings. Your not going to be doing any master crafts for sure but your gear will be fine till you get to maps
gearing is sooo bad in this game for the earlygame ... you got no tools so its basically just pick up an item ... roll it ... if its bad throw it on the ground/vendor it because you aint got fractures, you aint got rerollable essences yet, you aint got basically anything Take LE ... for starters you only have to pick up items that are already inherantly decent because all items drop identified and can be filtered ... and the crafting system lets you just add the things you want directly ... 90% of the tools you have at lvl 90 you have at lvl 5 and then you throw in socket pressure which makes finding an upgrade abysmal
not to mention the vendor recipes are kinda really really limited
And that's the main problem with last epoch - how you play at the beginning is barely any different than how you play in the endgame. I tried really hard with 2 characters but in the end it felt like progression line was at a constant 0. No need to think or to worry. Just walk and press 1 or 2 buttons and things die, sometimes equip an item that, maybe, is an upgrade? Who knows. Things still die.
Artificial replayability.
U must be new to the game . POE is a decade old game . ive been playing it since the 2nd league and they arent goin to change the campaign. its already a learning curve througth the campaign and if u know the campaign u should rushing through it fast even as a solo player . within 48hrs or less u should be mapping .
Those things that you call punishing mechanics are just learning experiences. I agree that the current campaign leveling experience is boring, but it's not really that bad you can still make your scuffed snowflake builds that make 0 sense and make it to maps. Takes some time and experience but that's just POE for you lol.
honestly, all the game needs it like a small bank of respect point like 5 floating then anything additional use item. As for the leveling experience just a rebalance of the sections, like a high diverse ailment section with low damage so get the idea across.
leveling is an absolute pain because most builds just cant work at this stage of the game and the campaign it just too hard and WAY too long. I tried settlers v2 and got my character to lvl 70 and now i realised its not working so i have to spend another 20h to get another toon leveld up, this is madness. like yeah 20h is long but unless your one of the campaign rushers, theres probably more people then you think that take this amount of time to finish the campaign. Maybe once we completed the campaingn once we could start a new character from act 5 or something, it would be a huge time saver. or maybe if you dint have to redo all the quests for the skill points. Point is, they need to cut down the difficulty of the campaign by a significant amount and reduce the time it takes to complete it. I dont care if X or Y streamer completes it within 1h, like i DO NOT CARE. i just want to enjoy then game as well.
If you so bored of campaign, just rush it. I'm not a speedrunner, not even good poe player, but campaign even on my completely flawed own builds takes 10h max. It's not that hard, and I think that campaign must be challenging. It's first test of build, proof of concept, at least for most builds, which function without necessary uniques. Damn, It's not that bad even on ruthless, which leaves you with 2 link average
Also it sounds like you might like D4 more than PoE
Honestly I think the leveling is perfect but that’s because I’ve only done the full campaign twice so I can understand this point if it’s coming from a veteran but imho I don’t think they should make leveling optional.
Kinda liked what they did in Last Epoch, straight up skipping half the campaign so easily
I got AIDS watching this video. Also I started offmeta build in ssf settlers event while levelling - cobra lash warden and I levelled with cobra lash. Was semi-good, but I wanted ruthless experience. About warden - you can buy tinctures at vendors. Only thing I agree - more bad skills should have more damage to be in-line with top skills. But that is not campaign specific. Cobra lash actually trash in maps, not in campaign. Campaign is fine. But after maps I just farmed cluster setup because no damage.
My only problem is the campain duration and nothing interessting happening all the time, low to no chance of good drops, long walking sections and a crap ton of loading screens :/ Actually the suffering in the early game is why i nearly only play standard, settlers was the only one where i didn't play standard in the last year, just because of the better trading
I usually don't die during the campaign, but it still feels like a chore. What's even more frustrating is seeing some of the speedrunners already be in maps by the time I get to act 6.
I loved your video but find myself disagreeing with some of the points being made. The campaign poses challenges, which makes you ask questions, that when answered helps you better learn and understand the game. 80% accuracy on a Marauder is quickly solved via Precision or the Dex from a Jade Amulet. Merveil's icy spells are made tolerable by equipping one sapphire ring. Brutus has attacks and patterns that are slow and telegraphed, encouraging players to listen for callouts or look for visual queues when fighting bosses. These examples, including learning to sidestep a charging Rhoa in the Mud Flats, are stepping stones in getting players ready for the endgame where character choices matter more and mistakes are more costly. With that said, one thing everyone can agree on is that the campaign and new player experience in PoE1 needs attention. We tolerate it on leaguestart, but never look forward to it. The campaign feels unfun. I don't enjoy it. Most people don't. Is it a necessary evil? Would we appreciate the endgame as much if we were just handed a map-ready character on a platter? I have no idea. But I do appreciate the conversation that's being had here.
I like playing the Campaign - and still i agree! What i think should be done is - as a new player you should get recommendations for every class what gem to pick - and what to link with what and why - up until act6 (where you should really have all your links and stuff) Like you start the game as a Ranger with Caustic arrow - and the game progresses you into playing a chaos dot build (including balistas/withering touch, dispair or whatever) - that will eventually kill Kitava Act10. You still have all the variety of gems and stuff - but the game teaches you one way to get a solid character. So you can beat the campaign - and you always know what´s your next goal. When you finished your campaign you have a character that is somewhat meaningful and ready to be progressed on. I do think this would be very simple to do for every class - and i really don´t know why they didn´t do it allready. And i doubt they will ever do this in poe1 - maybe they do it for poe2 and people can learn most of the mechanics of a "poe game" there and then switch back to poe1....
@@mikea.1652 That sounds like it would be amazing for new and returning players! For all its faults, Lost Ark has a system like this where they suggest beginner builds to new players. The goal isn't to have the best build possible, but rather to start someone off on the right foot. I would love to see something like this in PoE2 (and maybe even PoE1).
