Are HYPE Watches worth it?
We often hear about AP and Rolex, brands that are extremely well-known and you can’t buy even if you walk into the store with money. There are watches that represent investments and popular watches, and that has been a boom in recent years. The hype around these watches is real, and everyone wants to own a Rolex; everyone wants an AP because they symbolize success and economic power. But are these watches really worth it?
I recently bought my first AP, and I can say it’s obviously thanks to my job that I've been able to acquire several other Rolexes and recognizable watches with hype. Let me tell you, they do feel different.
These watches have excellent manufacturing and splendid quality control. If they didn’t, people wouldn’t buy them or seek them out. Sometimes marketing alone isn’t enough to maintain that status; the quality of your pieces has to match up with everything else.
For example, speaking of Rolex, I would dare to say they are the most popular watches in the world. They are well-built tanks; they can handle impacts, they can be tossed around. They withstand snow, water, camping, and climbing. You see my point? They are perfectly constructed watches that can endure a lot, and that’s what people really want- a watch that demonstrates their status but can also handle everyday life. And I can tell you these watches feel different for various internal and external reasons.
Sadly, it’s a reality that people treat you based on how they see you, and it's not the same to wear a complicated gold JLC Reverso as it is to wear a Datejust, a Submariner, or an AP. The fact that people can recognize the watch on your wrist makes them treat you differently because it means something to them; it represents that you’ve got money, that you’re successful. Unfortunately, yes, people do treat you differently. Of course, not everyone, but it does happen.
Then there’s the internal aspect, the way you can reach for your watch box. There are watches, and I’m using this as an example, but it could be a house, a car, a plane, or any item that showcases your success. It could even be a piece of clothing, a suit, a shirt, or a tie-anything that reminds you of your achievements. There’s definitely a mental shift when you put on your Patek, your AP, your Rolex. You walk differently, you feel different; your demeanor changes because your confidence grows, reminding you of everything you’ve accomplished. That’s the beauty of these pieces, whether or not someone else recognizes them. Just having something that reminds you of your success is priceless.
These watches are where they are for a reason, and owning, enjoying, and wearing them doesn’t add value to you as a person. Many people feel they need material things to give them worth; that’s something entirely different. I believe those who criticize are often those who have never felt this way. That’s the true appeal of these hyped pieces; they represent something that enriches you internally and externally.
But let me know in the comments- which JP piece do you like the most?

appreciate your opinion. This is what makes watches fun, we all have different concepts. I won't buy a watch without a date complication (because I'm forgetful) and I still need to tell time. I'd never wear this watch on the opposite side as then you can only see the insides (I can already do that on most normal watches with clear casebacks). But, it's your perfect watch, and that's all that matters! My "perfect" watch is still TBD...but I think it probably doesn't exist and i'll instead take the 20k and buy a variety of watches to swap around for fun.

I have gifted watches to all of my best friends in the last year. One for buying a business and another for buying his first home, and the last for changing careers. I’m 38, and we have all been friends since grade school, and now they all have something from me to help them remember a key change in their lives. Pretty cool stuff 🙏🏻

Even though Rolex has name recognition and may say something about the wearer, I would only buy a watch that I love to wear for myself not to impress anyone else. Personally I think that Richard Mille watches are ugly and I would never want one even if it sold for the same price as Rolex. I wear Omega watches, but will next choose a Rolex Air King which is not a popular and well recognized model because I love the way it looks and for its accuracy, not to impress anybody. I will feel good wearing a watch that I love not that others may love.

I prefer mechanical watches, but must confess that at one point I did not want to pay the $1000 service fee to have my Omega Speedmaster Watch serviced and I just went out and bought the best digital watch that synchronized with the atomic clock to keep absulutely perfect time for ~$200. Since then I did get my Speedmaster serviced and wear it most of the time. Now I am looking to buy my first Rolex. I never liked the guady appearance of the Rolex Submariner or other diving watches, so I will most likely buy a new 40mm Air King that I like very much. I am happy to know that I will never sell my mechanical watches and will leave them to my children to hopefully cherish as well as I did.

I have my father's mechanical tissot seastar, and I didn't use them for a few years. I didn't knew that if you dont wind them once in a few weeks they will not work correctly ever again. The repair cost me a couple of hundreds dollars but they now running 3-5 minutes slow everyday. I keep them as a memory but personally I prefer something more reliable and modern. Quartz or digital.

I don't wear a mechanical watch to tell time. I have an iPhone that will do that. I wear mechanical watches for the nostalgia and as a statement. As a mechanical work of art. If my watch is off a couple minutes, I don't really care as there is nothing, I have to time that requires precision to the second. Good video.

The real question here is: who is copying from who? I would argue that Patek is copying from MIDO. Because MIDO has this design since 1973, Patek started in the 90's with the Aquanaut. I'm about to buy two MIDOs for my wife and me. We love the design and the look.

I recently got this on Xmas eve. What can I say, I have absolutely no regrets getting it, the dark blue dial with its gold logo and seconds hand is really mesmerizing. In true GS fashion, the way the indices and minute/hour hands really reflects the light very well. The watch's rehaut is slightly tilted so the seconds hand's end pointer gets closer to the rehaut's seconds marking. Not to mention, the sharpness and aggressive design of the 62GS casing is no slouch either. Bezel-less, not an issue. Total package on its own! Very very different from the GS SBGA011 that I personally owned.
