An average middle-aged guy reuniting with the piano.
Just trying to have fun playing beautiful music and inspire others to do the same. I like to incorporate piano and classical music into comedic moments in life where possible.
Time to practice and record is a luxury these days, but this is a long-term project and I'm just focusing on having a good time.
My personal goal over the next 10 years (starting from 2023) is to master:
- Chopin - all Etudes, Preludes, Nocturnes, Ballades, Scherzos
- Beethoven - most major Sonatas - particularly nos. 14, 17, 21, 23, 26, 30, 31, 32
- Anything by Debussy
It is my dream to one day perform at a concert hall. Please subscribe and follow my progress!

Summer memories | Joe Hisaishi - Day of the River (from the movie Spirited Away)
Time is a rare commodity these days. Sorry for the slow progress and uploads. Many thanks to the subscribers who are sticking around!
I've always known this song as One Summer's Day, but the title in the sheet music is as written here (Ano Hi no Kawa in Japanese). As far as I know, this one has several titles depending on the arrangement from the movie/album.

0:00 Royal Ramble 2:18 First Look Sorry I know I show zero energy on these talking head videos. I'm recording at night, staying quiet to keep the kids from waking up and my wife from hearing me because embarrassment. 😂 And my personality is made for silence. Believe it or not I'm sorta trying hard. This is my first read of Hamelin's Etude No. 1. This will be a long journey but if I can play it ...

Haha😂
Nice 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I’m sure most are already doing this but for those who are unfamiliar, it’s a must to a graceful recovery from memory slips.
i thougt he was gonna play fur elise
@BonafenVideo * takes (whole) notes *
Can’t give me a Dad joke in the middle of Claire de Lune.
@@kimmorris9664 expect more of the same in the future 😁
i thought the b would have been replaced with a p given his name and that it's a cat until the punchline hit
@@Le_g3nd haha true that. This would have been the right opportunity
A classic on so many levels,
@@unclerat2131 😁
Not Hanon 😂
@@cookie2112 lol true there are better pieces to stay up for 😆
@@thehiko Good practice, though Your tempo is pretty high
@@cookie2112 yeah it’s a little over-tempo from what’s instructed in the score. Honestly I should take Hanon more seriously, I’ve only done #1 when I was a kid. 😬 It’s a little uneven and I need to polish my technique
@@thehiko you're being too hard on yourself Perfection in technique is desirable but I believe the connection between the musician and the piece that would allow both to connect with audience is more important and not necessarily reached by flawless playing. There, my two cents. Keep up the good work, Hiko! Cheers!
@@cookie2112 Thank you so much! ☺️
I can’t deny, my kids got me hooked on Bluey. Perhaps it was a little forced combining these together, but still kinda nice don't you think? This arrangement of Bluey’s theme was inspired by the ending of "The Sign" episode. Reminded me of Beethoven's Sonata No. 28 with that same calm feeling.
That’s me too my dude! Keep crushing those 🎹!
@@PeteSchmidt haha appreciate you bro!
👍 👍 👍 ❤
Amazing! Did you compare the Roland pg6 with other instruments?
Honestly I could have done more due diligence, but I was content at the time of purchase. These days though I've started wanting a little more 😬
Exactly, that’s how it is 😂😂
Dude! On the real!!!!!
Every. Single. Time. 😂 it’s terrible but it makes playing what it is, an art with expression and emotion and the occasional fuck up.
This 100%
Yup…
Very nice! Are the sounds recorded directly from the GP-6? Or do you use a VST?
@@leeclw thank you! This is direct from the GP-6. I’ve not used a VST yet, though I’m curious. But I’m happy with the sound I get out of the Roland modeling engine.
@@thehiko That's cool. I'm considering the GP-6 for the cabinetry but tempted to go with the LX-9 for the Hybrid Grand action. Any thoughts on the GP-6 PHA-50 action/speakers you can share?
@leeclw Did you post on Piano World last week? If so I just responded there! 🙂 I’m sorry I missed your post until today. The LX form factor is going to be more immersive I think. I tried the LX-708 last year and that was the case. While I haven’t tried the LX-9, I’m sure it improves on that. I personally liked the GP sound more when not sitting at the piano though. Hybrid grand action seemed too perfect, too easy to play to me. In reality most pianos are much clunkier so I think a little more imperfection is not a bad thing.
Yes I did! Thanks for sharing. Now I’ve got a tough choice to make! 😂
@@leeclw Tough but exciting! In the end there’s no replacement for first hand experience so I highly highly recommend trying them out yourself if you can!
What‘s this? 😃🤣 How does it work??
Hahaha it's not possible. Well maybe it is, but certainly not like this. 😆 I should have posted this for April Fools.
@@thehiko 😁😁
Ooh I never try Hamelin's etude before, seems like a really good exercise for the right hand to separate the melody and chords. .. and LOTS of interval thingies
@@MusicLah I agree! I’m so far behind working on this tho 😅
Ahh I never get enough of this piece of music from Joe Hisaishi. You performed it so expressively and beautifully!
@@MusicLah I really appreciate that!
Wow, I’m mesmerized!!! You played this so enchantingly ✨
@@pianothingsmusic thank you for your kind words!
Beautifully played, thank you! 🙂 I love all of Hisaishi's film themes. I'm currently working on simplified arrangements of "Theme of Marco and Gina" from Porco Rosso, and "Legend of the Wind" from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. I hope to be able to play Hisaishi's arrangements one day, along with all his other works.
@@SeaDrive300 Me too! I’ll have a collection of his songs uploaded in due time.
me on my way to get roland rp 107
@@Theseakeys Congrats! Hope you enjoy!!
This can consistently have me in silent tears by the end, depending on who’s playing it. No other song gets me this emotional. Crazy.
I freaking love this nocturne...
Great!!
Amazing
I love the speed ups 😂
Thank you for watching! There was no way I could subject anyone to the entire run at normal speed lol. Honestly I’m so embarrassed by this entire video I’m like 🫣😣😭🫥
Sorry @wotbmemeplatooning this gonna take a looong time!
thank you so much man, ive been waiting for this!
@wotbmemeplatooning Apologies for not being able to do more at this point. I’ve got a ton to improve on, both for the piece and presentation😔
Nice job! I find when I'm dusting off Op. 10 #12 I like to practice without damper for the same reason, there's nowhere to hide if my timing is off.
Yup that’s a good one! I was thinking of doing that when I get around to reviewing it. I think op. 10-5 would also work. A lot of the fast pieces are oddly satisfying without the pedal tbh.
tocas muy bien, cuanto tiempo te tomo todo el repertorio?¿
¡Muchas gracias! No recuerdo cuánto tiempo me tomó...
Nice heel toe technique !
The only thing that inspires me to learn is the thought that all my parts in all my songs are boring and terrible (which they are) and I want to learn the things I wanna learn.
You keep that head up high! Maybe you had ups and downs but in the end it’s contributed to growth. That’s progress and that, too, should be another source of inspiration. You’re making your own music and that’s more than a lot of us can say.
Yeah I will agree with that, no matter if I liked the song or not, it has helped me no matter what.
Nice mashup 😁
So true! 😂
It’s so cruel how fast technique can fall apart if not maintained!
Sorry if im being rude but when are you starting the hamelin etude 1?😊 And if you have atarted it already can you make a progress video?
Not rude at all! I know that’s my bad, I’ve just got a lot on my plate and a big backlog of stuff. Rest assured I will be on it, my goal is to have the first video about it by the weekend!
@@thehiko Thank you so much! I'm looking forward to it.
@wotbmemeplatooning btw please don’t get your hopes up too much, my first read of the sheet music will be atrocious. 😂
@@thehiko no no no, I won't be. I just wanna see someone actually trying it and documentating their progress.
@@wotbmemeplatooning I had a mishap procuring the sheet music so the video will have to be next week. I’m very sorry! 🙇🏻♂️ New goal is next Friday 🙏🏼
The minor stumble precipitating a full on inner-rage quit. I completely understand. I played piano for 8 years, but it's been probably 20 years since I've practiced. However, when I sit down at a bench I expect the muscle memory and coordination to be there immediately. I was the exact same way after just 1 year of not playing every day. An easy fix but so disheartening.
So true! And there’s so much - coordination, stamina, accuracy, evenness. It’s like working out, takes a lot of effort to build and maintain but you can lose so much so fast
@@thehiko The worst part is knowing what they're supposed to do, and what they could do! It's like being able to picture riding a bike because you used to do it all of the time and now you can't make it more than 10 yards because the muscle movements aren't quite right anymore.
Oh goodness this is like foreshadowing the human aging process 😂😭
@@thehiko Oh nooo! 😭 Here comes the existential dread again! All from a piano short on UA-cam. All joking aside this was super relatable. Keep improving!
Appreciate you!
Oh my goodness 😂 This is so beyond accurate. Except I want to pull my hair out as well. 😂
Sometimes I want to hulk smash the keys so bad
Song?
That’s Chopin’s Etude op. 10 no. 4 🙂

Haha thanks for listening to my silly mashup!
Great playing! Sounds beautiful🎶
😊
Amazing! keep up the great work 👏
can i give you a challenge? learn hamelin etude 1 and play that without pedal.
