Over-Sized Chinook From Shore
On Aug. 1, 2024, I land an over-sized chinook from the rocks along the Strait of Juan de Fuca on Vancouver Island. The slot limit was 80 centimetres, but this chinook was 95 centimetres and was released after a great battle.

Beach fishing for chinook on the east coast of Vancouver Island. As often happens when shore fishing, there are no fish bonked during this September beach-fishing trip just some nice scenery, some chinook splashing up an estuary and friends having a few chuckles in a beautiful spot on the east coast of Vancouver Island.

I know exactly where you are but I won't out you. I spent my entire young and adult life fishing the South Island. A good friend of mine uses 30 lb braid and he can cast further then anyone. That Spring was pushing 30 lbs. Nice fish!
i appreciate you wanting to release that fish quickly. if you can't retain it, quick release is essential. quite the fish!
Nice one. Well worth waiting that hour for the tide to come up. 10lb braid main line for shore fishing is crazy though
Just curious because I've never seen an experienced angler do it before - why do you reel while fish are actively taking drag and your drag is loose? Wouldn't you normally only reel when you've made headway and need to regain line? It didn't look like it was doing much.
Looks like it's time to make a pier net for yourself!
Nice spring. It's best to leave in the water next time when you know there too big.
Goodluck doing that at those rocks if you know where he’s fishing big guy. Keep the negative comments to yourself. Cliff is a class act
@@christianmorgan8186 @kaymallil is right. A fish was also broken off on a barnacle leaving a lure and line trailing from its mouth. Its odds for survival are poorer because of it. If the rocks negatively affect proper fish handling they probably shouldn't be fished from. I'm sure Cliff is a nice guy. He most certainly sounds like a nice guy. Personally, I'd love him to teach me some stuff about shore fishing for lings. But from what I saw in this video I might encourage him to find a more appropriate area to fish from. Definitely a nice spring though, Ciff. Congrats. Christian, no one likes someone throwing their weight around when they have no weight to throw around. You're not a moderator and you have no badge.
Great video. We are getting to the age where our members are slowing down. Sorry, I missed you in 2024. Must make a point to get together 2025. Take care
Happy birthday love your videos
Thanks, I appreciate that.
Happy belated Birthday, nice fish :) - I caught a nice 90cm fish right in that spot the week before that I had to release, love fishing out there. :)
Thanks Adam. Yes, I love that general spot, too but, as I think you know, I prefer the outer sandbar. I was up there this year when you were out in your pontoon boat. No luck for me but I heard you had one onboard while I was there. I hope we get to fish another tide together some time.
A long wait between videos but a really great one! If this took a long time to put together, I would say it was worth it! One of your best. That kind of fish is worth the price of admission. Certainly the photo doesn't do the fish justice because it came out of the water awfully chrome!
Many thanks. It's funny you mention the colour of the fish. I remember sending that photo to a couple of friends at the time and remarking that the fish was brighter than it looked in the photo.
selamat ulang tahun semoga di usia yg ke 70 bisa lebih sehat lagi amin
Happy 70th Birthday!
Which beach is this if you dont mind. Thanks!
Is this past otter point? Thanks.
Can I have location. Thank you so much
Going to that beach in about 2 days staying awhile hope i see you
Hi there. What fish jig are you using? Thanks
In this particular video it is a 2 1/2-inch holographic green Buzz Bomb.
Hi there. What fish jig are you using? Thanks
just moved here from australia going to get my fishing set up this week, ive been looking at this little mouth opening in the river for a few weeks now thinking damn i bet theres some big salmon in here, first video ive seen and you caught 2 stonkas......what type of jig bait do you use and do you think theyd go for soft baits
Those are fall run coho, so you won't be catching any of them right now--and typically there is no retention at that spot until after the September long weekend. Buzz Bombs are the go-to lure on the west coast, so you'll want a selection of them including holographic green, holographic blue and holographic pink. I usually carry some Zzingers, too, and they have been productive for me over the last two seasons. Blue Fox spinners in a 4 or 5 size can also work. I've never used a soft plastic here and don't know of anyone else who has. Make sure you're using barbless hooks and I'd swap out the treble hooks that many lures come with for a single barbless. I use 2/0 barbless Gamakatsu hooks and don't have any trebles at all in my tackle collection. Make sure you check the regulations for the Area and sub-Area you plan to fish because they can be different from place to place. Good luck!
@@OldShoreFisherman got any tips on good spots this time of year, i am here until october so cannot wait for september to hit this spot
@@durrypaketbryan3357 If you're referring to other spots in Port Renfrew, then the answer is no. There are other spots on the island that offer at least the possibility of catching salmon from shore at various times, but the success rate is low. Through July it is possible to catch summer coho from the rocks in the Sooke area, notably East Sooke Park (primarily Beechy Head) and Otter Point. There are sockeye possibilities in Port Alberni in July, too, at Papermill Dam. In August there are good opportunities for pink salmon along the beaches from Campbell River down to Qualicum.
Are they around in August at all? Might be up around that way next summer
The coho sometimes start showing up toward the end of August, but typically there is no retention until after the Labour Day weekend so it would be catch-and-release only. There are often chinook around, too, near the end of August--also catch-and-release only until late October.
Great videos, when do you start to hit the local spots? Hope to see you out there, cheers.
I usually start checking early July, but when the fish show up is another matter. They were "late" last year. Say hi if you see me. Tight lines!
beatiful beach. Sir what is the name of that beach if you dont mind. thank and have a good fishing.
Thanks for sharing your videos! Looks like you had a nice season from shore. I noticed your videos only show the action after you hook up. Any tips or advice for how you fish buzzbombs and zzingers? Are you jigging them, constant retrieve, something else? Any tips you can share would be a big help for a newbie like me. Also, I noticed you changed your gear and are using a much longer rod (Amundsen Strategy X?). A review or comparison of that rod vs others you've used would be interesting to see as well. Looking forward to more of your videos!
Yes, it was actually a very good year for shore fishing. And you're right, I generally don't turn the camera on until I hook up. I know I have some footage that I occasionally shoot for myself using a camera set up on a tripod that might show me casting and retrieving so I'll check to see if it would be of any use and possibly work it into a future video. In general, I use a moderately fast retrieve that is pretty much constant with an occasional almost-gentle backward sweep. I never use the aggressive, violent jerking motions you see some anglers use--nor do any of the most successful shore anglers I know. Almost all of the coho I catch, whether summer or fall, are hooked in the top 10 to 20 feet of the water column, so I start my retrieve as soon as the lure hits the water. If I'm fishing for springs I let the lure drop much deeper. Tight lines!
See you there next year sept7 to Oct 6 lol spot booked
That's a nice long stay. Hopefully it will be a good run.
I'm in powell river so I'll be monitoring the run can adjust timing some as theyre paying me not to work now lol.how late does the run go there anyway? Discovered it September past for three days and looking forward to this September 😀
I really can't give a definitive answer to that @@joesutherland225. I've caught coho there as late as the first week of November and I'm sure there are anglers who have caught some later than that. There are always stragglers in every run. However, I'm pretty confident that you'll hit the peak of the run in the timeframe you have booked. Tight lines!
I know where that is good chance I was just on the point up the beach
Wow love your videos I showed my wife a few videos of your adventures she and i both loved the your salmon meal with your son with fresh from the sea and garden coho and carrots. I jokingly said if we lived in Victoria i wouldnt have had to buy a boat i coukd just fish from shore with you and all your friends hahaha. Keep uo the great videos
Many thanks!
what beach is that? gorgeous
The 'ol coho toss. Ug. Not exactly what you had in mind no doubt.
Fish on...Great catch buddys keep it up
I've mentioned this before. Love the narration. Some real hogs there. Peeling the line! Thanks for the great video.
Yes, I remember; and I appreciate the positive feedback. Many thanks!
If you don't mind me asking what lures are you getting them to bite on no one in my area has any idea how to do anything but floss chum.
Buzz bomb
Foul hooked (aka snagged) fish. Shameful.
Clearly the fish tried to bit the hook and missed. Fair is foul and foul is fair. If you didn't intentionally foul hook, then it's yours to keep. Deal with it.
What's ur main line then ur leader
My main line is 10-pound test braid. I use either Sufix 832 or Power Pro. I use a four- to five-foot Sufix flourocarbon 15-pound test leader.
Looking to go up there this fall for 1 or 2 days. Any colours the coho are drawn to? and is wild coho still allowed or does it have to be hatchery up there?
Holographic green or pink Buzz Bombs are usually at the top of the list with holographic blue a close third. You might want to throw in an assortment of Zzingers, too, and a few Blue Fox spinners. Make sure you check the regulations before you go, but generally you are allowed two unmarked ("wild") coho. The rule for the area that is relevant to shore fishing actually states that you are allowed four coho, two of which may be unmarked. I've yet to take a clipped coho out of there from the beach. Good luck!
Thank You very much for the information. I went to this exact spot about 6 years ago but wasn't able to catch anything with a friend. I've only been fishing two times ever but I'm going to try going a few times this fall. If I see you out there I'll come say hello! Thanks Gil. I hope you're getting to fish a tide or two with Adam and Jessica. I know you love it as much as I love fishing with Reid. I hope to see you again this September. Oh, and tell Randy to check the regs. He could have kept that beautiful wild coho that he released (and moaned about) the last time we got together. I didn't have the heart to tell him at the time, but I'll razz him the next time I see him. Ha! Take care.
@@OldShoreFisherman He found out later. Talk about a crybaby. Of course, he laughed at it .....
Great video Cliff! See you out there soon👍
Thanks Dan. I'm surprised I haven't seen you on the rocks already, but soon hopefully.
Once again some great fishing video with the bonus of some exellent food plating as well. Damn I'm hungry now.
Many thanks! I'll try not to let that go to my head.
Thanks for the great video. Take care of yourself. I watched a video of a guy doing a lecture and he had heavy breathing shortness of breath. I'm not kidding, but in the comments the guy had a heart attack and died shortly afterwards. Listening to his video I was having concerns and the update in the comments was very sad to read. Not trying to be a downer here. Your videos are awesome and I love the narration. We all have to look out for each other. Remiss if I didn't say anything. My dad had quadruple bypass and my cousin the same age as me had a heart attack 6 months ago. I'm sensitive to this subject. Thanks again for the videos.
Thanks! I appreciate your concern and the fact you took the time to thoughtfully express it.
@@OldShoreFisherman Thanks for the reply. I was worried that I may have offended you. I was being 100% sincere about my concerns. But sometimes things can be misinterpreted on the internet. As I've said, I love your videos. Especially the beach fishing when you are catching absolute hog coho. Wow!
I'm not much of a fisherman but isn't this somewhere around otter point?
Nice catch! Goin to island this weekend but dont know where some spot do you have some idea i could catch salmon to just some experience to my son thanks!
Most people go to a place called beechy head in east sooke park. I don't know where this location is. But, Would be very helpful if someone could post a Google Earth link of these rocks.
Where exactly in Vancouver island is this?
Where in sooke?
Hey, I'm going to be on vancouver island for a couple of days next month and wanted to spend a little bit of that time fishing. We're going to be staying near ucluelet. I saw your video fishing for serf perch and it looked like great fun, what bait's are best and where abouts can we get some bait? It would be great to catch a salmon too but I'm not sure if we have the time or the right gear for it, we're going to bring over some reels and lures, maybe a couple of telescopic rods too. We were thinking of maybe buying a couple of rods whilst we were over. We're going to be spending most of our time on the mainland which will be mostly trout, pike or perch fishing I think.
Yes, surf perch can be fun. While I was in Ucluelet I preferred to use Cap 'N Hook as a tackle/bait shop, but there is at least one other tackle shop in town. Almost anything will work as bait for perch--people use pieces of clam, mussel or even limpets harvested from the shore--but I used small pieces of squid. Any tackle shop should have frozen squid. I detailed the setup I used in response to someone's question on the video and someone else offered several good suggestions to another viewer. It's a beautiful stretch of coast. Have fun.
I never fished for beach salmon before what reel and rod should i get?
There is no one-size-fits-all setup for shore anglers. I have no idea of your preferences, experience or skill level, so I can't tell you what you should get. I can tell you what I use. All of the coho in these recent videos were caught using either a 13-foot Shimano Clarus or a 13-foot Amundson Kudos Strategy X, both paired with a Shimano Stradic XG 4000 spooled with 10-pound test braid. That setup isn't for everyone, but I use it for almost all my shore fishing, including fall coho and chinook. You should just find something that you're comfortable with right now and then get out there and talk to other anglers. Tight lines!
I really enjoy your videos. Great narration as well. Appreciate the spoken words very much.
That's great to hear. Many thanks!
Do you mostly blind cast for them that time of year, or are they jumping/finning close to shore like they do in fall?
They aren't anywhere near as active as they are in the fall Adam so it's mostly blind casting, but you'll see the odd jumper to let you know they're at least in the area. Where I fish from the rocks I can usually tell by the way the water is setting up when it's likely to heat up--and it's not always on the flood. From the beach I usually just try to hit the top of the flood. There isn't really any finning to speak of here in the summer. Cheers!
@@OldShoreFisherman well its reward for lots of putting in time to learn and lots of patience then. Amazing stuff, I may have to come down that way one of these days. I would love to start my beach season earlier than August when the pinks arrive.
@@rabes1981 you're certainly always welcome and I'd be happy to fish with you again. The beach fishing was unusually good last year so it's not something I'd be setting my cap on, but the fishing from the rocks--assuming I can still manage it--is generally decent around mid-July. Give me a heads-up if you're planning to come down this way. Cheers!
@@OldShoreFisherman Thank you, I will let you know :)
