Big hit in 1959 in Chicago and he recorded on Chess records also in Chicago. Great dance record which both Chicago and Detroit were noted for in the 50's and 60's. The organ likely inspired Del Shannon's big 1961 hit "Runaway".

One of my favorites!

Part of my misspent youth was at a pool room in Brooklyn NY. This song was one of the most played on the jukebox. I could never have imagined that, later in life, I would become close friends with Frank Guida, the producer, in Norfolk, VA, where the song was recorded at the LeGrande studio on 25th St. The name US Bonds was a gimmick Frank devised hoping that radio stations might think it was a public service announcement for savings bonds. Another of Frank's songs that has had some enduring success is "If You Want To Be Happy." The next verses are: "For the rest of your life, Never make a pretty woman your wife."

There were still some songs like this. Gary Lewis, son of comedian Jerry Lewis ,was drafted to Vietnam. When he got back from the war , he tried to reconstitute the band but by then, this kind of music was no more.

This was heavy shit considering the period. Brilliant.

It was number one for two weeks. It knocked the Beatles out of. number one, then it was kncked out by the Beatles. The n the Supremes performed it on Ed Sullivan and it rose to knocked the Beatles out of number one for a second week. This rrepresented three number one is a row which was unheard of . Ultimately they had five number one's in a row.

The Drifters as a group went through many personnel changes from the early fifties to mid 1960's. Ben E King was lead in this song with a group originally called the Crowns that transformed into the Drifters. The success of the Drifters and others was the combination of talent from different musical backgrounds.. The vocal groups were mostly street corner singers with gospel choir backgrounds predominately from the South not NY city. Record producers (Atlantic) recognized talent and got topflight musicians with classical, blues and jazz backgrounds and coupled them with great song writers. The song combines R and B styling, gospel singing, classical music instruments over a Latin beat. A winning combination that stands today. Many people call doo wop records "Mini symphonies". Only in America could this happen
