Sand Sweep: Siting a Flow Diversion to Minimize/Maximize Bed-Load Diversion
If you are planning to divert water from a bend, particularly with a diversion channel at the same bed elevation as the main channel, you will divert more bed load depending on whether you site it on the outside or inside of the bend. This video explains why.

    Thank you so much, Dr. Gibson. This is incredibly helpful! I do have a follow-up question-how can we address those problematic cells? Would it be better to add breadlines to guide the cell faces in specific directions, or should we decrease the cell sizes/add computational points in those areas? Do you have other suggestions? Thanks!

    I have a relatively simple model with 4 culverts from upstream to downstream at several stations. The water don't even go through the first culvert... it stucks there and after a while the model computation failed. I check many times DTM US e DS elevations at culvert, I increased or decreased cell dimension, I diminished timestep to 4 or 5 seconds, I verified that slope is positive and ate least 1% locally from US to DS of the cuvert barrel but nothing. The model doesn'ty run! I cannot find a solution.... it's 1 week I stucked there, I created entire model from the beginning but nothing.... nothing 😕... Do you have a page to submit bug requests? I think it's a software bug...

      @@stanfordgibson The video production is complete! Here’s the link to the finished video: ua-cam.com/video/YXNpCZdXyLc/v-deo.htmlsi=ukuGWhr2dbmY95tF This video provides a comprehensive introduction to Agongdian Reservoir, located in Yanchao District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, focusing on its history, unique design, and operational challenges. Due to its distinctive topographic conditions, the dam stretches 2,380 meters in length, serving primarily for flood control and irrigation. However, after years of operation, the reservoir faced severe sedimentation issues, significantly reducing its storage capacity and flood control functions. To address these problems, a series of improvement projects were implemented, including lowering the spillway crest elevation from EL.34.5m to EL.27.0m to enhance sediment flushing efficiency. During the flood season (June 1 to September 10), the "empty reservoir sediment flushing" strategy is adopted by lowering the water level, allowing floodwaters to carry sediment out of the reservoir and restore its capacity. At the end of the flood season (after September 10), water is diverted from rivers outside the reservoir’s catchment area to refill the reservoir and secure the water supply.. The video concludes with an innovative solution-constructing a dividing dike to separate the reservoir into a water storage zone and a sediment flushing zone. This approach allows simultaneous water storage and sediment flushing, showcasing the ingenuity and adaptability of hydraulic engineers in overcoming natural challenges. Thank you again for granting permission to use your video segments. I have credited your channel in the video description as per your guidelines. I truly appreciate your support and hope you enjoy the final result! Best regards, Hsuan-Yu Lin

    Hi Sanford. Very helpful modeling approach you demonstrate here. I am interested in what you might think of this approach. It was challenging to get the cells in the refinement regions lined up so perfectly with the pier terrain modification. I kept seeing leakage at the piers, so I did the following: Place the piers in the model at just a tenth or two smaller than they really are. Establish the Refinement Regions by tracing over the pier modifications, mesh the model, edit the Computational Points as needed. Then, return to the pier terrain modification editor and edit the pier width to the real, slightly wider width. I'm hoping that the result will be that the Terrain is modified for the pier and it will widen into the adjacent cell, effectively blocking that side of the cell and preventing flow from "leaking" through it.

    thanks to professor Recking for his worthy advices along my doctoral dissertation. I wonder if HecRas would consider including his friction and sediment transport equations, which I have coded for fluvial morphodynamics, because they are numerically manageable while highly robust in a large range of scales/contexts for mountain rivers.

    • @stanfordgibson
      @stanfordgibson 3 місяці тому

      We haven't used his transport function in the past because it was not partitioned by grain class (which RAS requires). But Alain mentioned that he has a version that is partitioned by grain class headed to the journals. We will definitely consider it when we add sediment to 2025.

    • @santicata89
      @santicata89 3 місяці тому

      @@stanfordgibson thanks for your reply. I used his partition approach, as the paper in which he describes it gives some intuitive criteria to choose values for the partition parameters. They provide a lot of flexibility, I think that more than other typical partitions like W&C2003 approach. That way one obtains selective transport and bed coarsening at base flows (recessions), and transport of most grain classes at floods. What this implies for flow friction will depend strongly on active layer thickness, which is indeed a concept to be taken with care due to vertical sorting.

    Hi Dr. Gibson, when I run my model, this error messages popup. I checked all my input data - flow duration and computation increment, all data is more than 0. Can help to clarify why this error keeps happening? Sediment Transport Analysis HEC-RAS 6.x An error occurred with sediment boundary data. The Boundary duration data and Computation Increment Must both be greater than 0.0 Please check your data.

      There are several issues that can cause this...I list them here: www.hec.usace.army.mil/confluence/rasdocs/rassed1d/1d-sediment-transport-user-s-manual/trouble-shooting/common-sediment-transport-error-messages

    Why go through the hustle of log-transforming the data and using a complicated equation to avoid a transformation bias? Why don't people fit a non-linear model in euclidian space from the get-go? Is it just that log-sapce is better for visualization or is it a historic thing?

    Thank you for the video. When you copied the coordinates into the barrel GIS data, did that change the length of the culvert?

    • @stanfordgibson
      @stanfordgibson 6 місяців тому

      Good question. No...it did not. This is an important point. The culvert length stays the same that you specified...the coordinates just determine the headwater and tailwater elevations/cells.

    Very cool! This reminds me of how different periods of freezing/thawing (as well as many other processes) create distinct layers of snow and ice crystals over a snow slope - which can be responsible for avalanches.

    These Podcasts are really cool, the excerpts with additional complemenary data/videos/graphics makes it super interesting. One thing I would like to see added, is the option of having video format for the whole podcast like Joe Rogan does IT just gives a nice feel to it, Morevoer, these images can be shown in real time, during the podcast with some help ofcourse, Furthermore, these edits can still be continued after the podcasts.

      For sure...that would be great...but the editing time would preclude any new sediment features in RAS for the foreseeable future. :)
