One of the big stories of this year has been the first crewed mission of the Boeing Starliner space craft which has now been at the ISS for 2 months, when it was only scheduled to be there for 8 days. We dig a little deeper and also have a conversation about misinformation.

Dave Giles
Giles is a singer/songwriter from London, England who has always had a passion for space flight. Since his early years he’s been looking skyward and though he ended up wielding a guitar for a living, space exploration is alway on his mind and one of his most popular songs is about astronaut Gene Cernan, ‘The Last Man On The Moon’.
In 2019 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, Giles visited all of the crewed space vehicles flown by NASA from Freedom 7 to the Space Shuttle Orbiters.

You’d be pleased to know that students at Robert L. Crippen Elementary in Porter, Tx know all about SMEAT as well as several other missions “CRIP” was a part of. We are super proud of our school’s namesake and he visits occasionally since he grew up here in Porter. We also get to visit with him via zoom sometimes as well. Also are you aware of any SMEAT footage? I’ve seen the NASA images but I’m looking for video footage. Thanks!

From NASA’s explanation that I listened to on the call, got the impression that the doghouse design is the culprit. Because of the compact design, heat is difficult to dissipate. Add to that the thrusters are programmed to fire more often than other designs (for more accurate control ?) making high temperatures in the doghouse. That leads to several issues like the Teflon poppet blocking the flow of oxidizer and/or Fuel to the thruster. AND the high temperatures also change the mixture of oxidizer/fuel decreasing thrust. AND there is the Helium leaks which reduces the pressure to push the oxidizer and/or to the thruster. All these issues are making NASA losing confidence in the Astronauts' safety and hence the SpaceX crew change. When the transcript comes out, listen to the end where I believe CBS comments about Starliner coming home with no passenger.

Regarding the general question as to what is the value of satellite reconnaissance, during the very beginning of the corona program, the photography reviewed by analysts at the national photo interpretation center (NPIC) near Washington DC. There, under Dino Brugioni, these analysts were able to find out that the supposed missile gap between the Soviet union and the United States was actually much smaller than supposed. The tensions were considerably lowered and possibly prevented a nuclear conflict.

We disagree with your analysis there. We were looking for a beginners guide, and that's exactly what he gave us. Our podcast is trying to be accessible for all people no matter what their level of expertise. For Brandon to cater to those people as well as he did in this interview is not an easy thing to do. Also there was plenty of in depth substance without it needing much more.

Fascinating subject from a knowledgeable guy. The recent NASA OTPS report on SBSP was already dated on release and made glaringly erroneous assumptions. It needs serious revision to bring it to current engineering understanding. SBSP is a legitimate program focus for NASA, DOE, ARPA-E, National Space Council. It deserves R&D funding at least on par with that of fusion. China, Japan, the UK, EU, South Korea, and other nations and private groups are committing money now for studies and demo flights. It was invented in the US. The National Security Space Office of the Pentagon proposed in 2007 that the military retire the risk and pay over market prices for energy delivery to forward bases while the commercial baseload market rises. The US should lead or take the GREATER RISK of becoming a permanent energy client of others. "The sun doesn't run out, or at least not for 5 billion years and, I figure, that's good enough."-Carl Sagan, 2/9/90 speech before the Emerging Issues Forum at NCSU
