I Pity You
Recently I was in the midst of writing a fairly simple ballad -- at least I had started on the music -- but I wasn't sure about the content. And then I heard about some of my connections participating in a MAGA party, celebrating this pernicious thing with Trump cupcakes and "tears of the liberals" lemonade. So this fairly gentle piece acquired a bit of an edge.

Melancholy Xmas
Переглядів 60Місяць тому
Challenging myself yesterday to write a song, (long overdue) I was surprised, perhaps even bowled over with the emotion I let myself in for by writing a Christmas song for people who are missing departed loved ones during the holiday season. I also am one of those. Here's the song. I had to wait for the tears to subside before I could record it.

I've always found Rev 1:7 a really haunting verse. Here's a song I wrote with it and lots of other Revelation passages in mind.

I really like John Lennon's Imagine. The human longings are something all of us can relate to. However the details of what we are asked to imagine are problematic for the Christian. Here's what I imagine...

This is one of my very first songs, if not the very first. I prayed maybe for a year for the ability to write songs and this was the first result. I still like it.

This one is aspirational. I'm on holidays just now and I'm pushing myself to write lots of music. I wasn't sure where this one was going to go lyrically. I kind of let it have it's head. And here we are...

Putting together that footage of Ocean Falls made me nostalgic. So I wrote a song about it. Ocean Falls alumni please comment with memories and I'll try to do a version with extra verses to mention them as well!
The Ocean Falls of my Childhood
Переглядів 3,7 тис.6 місяців тому
Scenes from British Columbia's coastal ghost town as it was in the late 60's and early 70's. Background music supplied by my brother playing on a piano that came South from Ocean Falls with us when Crown Zellerbach transferred my Dad to Elk Falls. Compare what you see with scenes from recent visits.

An exercise in gospel telling where it isn't about how I hard I had to seek to find God, but rather how much it was a matter of admitting that all of the effort has been on his part and not on mine.
Lost In Wonder

I wrote this with a goal in mind. Something I aimed at but only made a semblance of hitting. I wanted to write a musically clever song with mystical sounding lyrics. In short, I wanted to sound like Yes. Ha. This song sounds nothing like Yes. But it is, I think, musically clever and has mystical sounding lyrics. Ultimate goal unattained. But then, it wasn't a collaboration between virtuosi. The...
Epiphany

A song for Epiphany, remembering that although, at the event that it commemorates, the pilgrims who sought the Christ child were rich and privileged individuals, most of us are not. Sometimes we seek on the basis of hunches and yearnings which are not as specific as the lore of these astrologers. Still, we hope for reality at the end of our journeys.

My one and (hopefully) only country song in all its derivative glory. Summer 2022 lasted too long. The west coast can't handle too many more of these.
Looks LIke...

Recently I've been 'accused' of writing with an apparent aim toward musical theatre. This song does nothing to absolve me of that. It's an ode to flights of imaginative fancy. (In the third verse, the imaginary part is the dancing, something that my wife and I gave up on long ago something to do with having two left feet...)

Written in a state of deep frustration with what much of the church seems to think we are about.

My brother and I are of one mind on this one ... We pity you. Both the harm that you have pulled down on your own head, the eventual guilt you will feel at the harm you have pulled down on others, and for some of you, the shame you have cast upon the body of Christ in casting that vote and calling it religious duty.

Oh I wish I could show my father and aunt this film! (They have passed) They used to live there and had great memories of Ocean Falls. It surely was a different era. I have been wanting to go there for a long time.

Absolutely loved this. I was born in Ocean Falls in 1964 (my 60th birthday is just coming up in 2 weeks). My mom and dad left to go back to Courtenay before I was 1, so I have no memory of it, but love seeing these videos. I have shared it with my mom. Thanks so much for sharing.

TY. A very nice look into company town life , of a bygone era. Tearing it down, and booting the people must have been a very tough time.

Great film, thanks! As a pilot I was taxiing the same Goose “UAZ” up the ramp in Ocean Falls probably 50 years later. What a story that plane could tell ;). Ocean Falls has a special feel to it. You were lucky to grow up there. Cheers.

Very interesting. The 71-73 I didn’t like. Everything getting torn down and closed. Problem with a one industry town. I think it messed up a lot of people having to leave.
