The only time I listen to anything a music critic has to say is when I'm on the fence about a band, because either they can point out the cool things that might give me a new perspective, or verbalize what bothered me about the band to begin with. Otherwise, if I already like the band, why should I care what they think? Especially knowing how some things get exaggerated for viewer traffic. And the Imagine Dragons comparison just feels dismissive and lazy. But then, the internet does like to do lazy dismissive comparisons, like with ANY female-led rock band being compared to Evanescence or No Doubt no matter how dissimilar.

When I heard them the first time I was like "this is just Imagine Dragons vocals over prog metal"

This video comes off as a "Wing clipped fans biased takes 101" and I don't think you're wrong. The fact that after listening to "The Summoning" I had "Believer" in my head the rest of the day tells me more than I need to know. . . It's true yet it's simplifying their likeness to a bit of a joke. Sleep Token are fantastic musicians and I don't think anyone disputes that but they do flirt with many things that make popular music today, popular. Ain't nothing wrong with liking Imagine Dragons and/or Sleep token they just aren't my cup of tea, Imagine Dragons far less so. I just don't like the overproduced and sterile sound from either of them, they move me in no ways. Progressive music is a fluid expression of feelings and ideas that move different people in different ways and that's what is beautiful about it. Sleep Token are truly unique in how the express that and I can appreciate them for their ways of putting that to sound. It just, to me, they feel like a blend of genres where they've taken the basics of those genres and molded it in to their sound. It feels generic of those blended genres for example Djent, R'n'B and "electro". Also, the genres they blend aren't what I fancy and probably why I'm personally not as fond of them as others are. Make of it what you will. Enjoy them if you do no matter what others may feel. II is an amazing drummer.

I've known Image Dragons for a long time, and I met Sleep Token in 2023. With all due respect, Sleep Token is not on the same level as Image Dragons, Sleep Token is much higher. For me, the Sleep Token is like a fresh breath of air in music, they are truly incredible and deserve worldwide fame.

If you turn your volume up while listening to Rain, the part after the intro with just the keys and Vessel, you can hear light rain, and I’m pretty sure it’ll continue until the song ends, and it’s particularly clear in the first chorus, the bridge and at the very end where the instruments have faded oht. Personally, it’s such a nice touch and it gave me an “ah, of course” feeling given the name of the song, and it just goes to show how much thought and passion they put into this. Worship🙏

Carcass was pioneers in Grind Core genre, then they invent Melodic Death genre (Necroticism, Hearhwork), goes to Death'N'Roll (Swansong, Wake up and smell the Carcass), 17 years silence and then another different albums (Surgical Steel/Surgical Remissions, Torn Arteries). They are very unique and talent band.

So much effort to prove they are different when the only argument needed to compare is the tone of the vocals. THEY SOUND THE SAME. Yes, Sleep Token overall is better music.. but the comparison of Sleep Token sounding like a more 'Dark Imagine Dragons' is spot on.

I hear a very close resemblance between the singing voices of both vocalists and thought I was crazy for thinking that, because of the huge difference in the sounds. Anyway, not to bash you, but this comparison was made very face-value. A proper one would be just going in-depth on vocal tonal qualities, live performance movement quirks + you can literally compare the hand structure of both vocalists because of the mic-in-hand. Of course no intellectual musician would NEVER make two bands sound the same, because why would you?! :D My theory is that ID is the global money-maker band and then ST is the passion project to just make badass music and give lore for the fans to live with

I like that they can do whatever the flying fuck they want without having to please anyone. I think that’s the point, no? Music is an art form, a way of expression, some people will connect with it some won’t. The metal community has always been super elitist and toxic. That being said, I don’t think ST falls into the metal category itself. Vessel just pulls from whatever he wants to pull to send the message he wants and I respect him for it, but people will ALWAYS find a way to shit on something popular just because it makes them feel like their “elite”. I listen to country, rap, pop, classical.. anything that’s beautiful and speaks to me and makes me feel some kind of something. I don’t take into account what “genre” it is. If it’s hits, it hits. I think people are too preoccupied with labeling and putting things in a box so much that it takes the joy out of just discovering and enjoying music for what it is: music. I don’t hear the Imagine Dragons comparison, but when they compare ST to ID, they mean it as an insult and it is what it is. Loved that you objectively compared their music, ‘cause I curious myself on the comparison. Well done!
