Year in review 2024
2024 was a year that had potential to be one of "Hill End's" best years with a full subsoil profile from a very wet January. Sowing conditions were good and the crop was germinating and emerging well up until the 11th of May when a steady 80mm fell. This was problematic for barley and peas which had some seed mortality from sitting in waterlogged soil. Growing conditions through winter were generally good up until 15th September when we were hit with a couple of severe frosts down to minus 7. The impact this had was massive because it occurred right when crops were flowering and as a result had a big impact on yield. All grain crops were taken through to harvest and in the end were a bit better than we initially expected but well under potential yield given the moisture profile we started with. Bring on 2025!

Harvest 2024 at "Hill End" A year that showed so much potential then fell flat with the "winter kill" frost on 16th September. Some crops recovered partially but yield was 1/4 to 1/2 what the potential could have been. This farming game isn't for the faint hearted, and nature can be a great leveler. At least we are harvesting something and we have to be grateful for that.
Field Pea Frost 16 Sept 24
Переглядів 403 місяці тому
A 12 day Timelapse in our Sturt Field Pea crop. The sequence starts from the 10th of September where the peas are waist high. 2 frost events occurred on the 15th and 16th of September (day 6 and 7 of this sequence) and the effect on the crop is dramatic as the plant canopy collapses as the frost thaws out. The effect of that frost on all crops was devastating, slashing yield prospects by up to ...

A month in the life of a canola paddock. It's amazing how much these plants grow in a relatively short space of time when the conditions are right. This paddock was sown 19th April, and the variety is Solstice. It was sown into a vetch hay stubble with 50kg MAP. It's had 2 applications of nitrogen in the form of urea totaling 210kg/ha. Time lapse started on the 14th June and stopped on the 19th...

2022 ended up being our wettest year on record, but it followed an above average rainfall year of 2021 and especially the back-end months of Nov/ Dec which recorded 141mm as well as a hailstorm in September which took out 1/4 of our farm. The profile was already full before 2022 began. 908 mm of rain was the final tally for 2022 which is well over double our average annual rainfall of 400mm. It...

2021 the year that had everything. Mice, chasing moisture to sow into, wet, massive hail storm, and a long drawn out harvest due to constant rain delays. Here's just a snippet from the eye in the sky.

A challenging year to make vetch hay. early September weather was still cool and mild with the threat of rain on the 10 day forecast. Cut 11th Sept on the first 25deg day and raked 24th on a windy mild day. Finished baling 27th Sept and stacked and capped that day. 50mm rain 29th Sept....

    I did this too. My son gave me a ticket for my 50th birthday. Best birthday pressy in history for any age. You drove really really well. Good job. I did the lunch thing as well which was great. I took a pic of my son sitting in between Dick and Steve which is permanently on his facebook wall. It was 1 the best days of my life and 4 laps flashes by in what seems like only a few minutes. I hope to be able to do it again soon. Thanks for posting this video

    I'm guessing you guys don't get much wind where you are. Here in Manitoba Canada we have to use a swath roller to press the swath down. If not used, the wind can in extreme cases blow the canola all over the field and shell out the seeds.

    • @MrVectorviper
      @MrVectorviper 7 років тому

      Yes we can get wind. Usually the whirlywind is the problem turning rows as it crosses over the field. We are finding the 40' swath is holding together better than 30'

      At this stage of Canola maturity would it not almost be worth it to wait and straight cut ?

    Andy does 1 full lap without a fuel cap, pits after lap one still in the lead. He estimates he lost 40L of fuel around the track and only just makes it home after 3 laps to refuel. Car 30 (Glen Owen and Mat Ryan) overshoot the pre-stutter corner going hard to catch car 50 but unfortunately DNF lap 2 with fan belt issues.

    Did you build the booms and the three-point attachment yourself, or were they manufactured for you through a business? We are looking at converting our old drill cart into a spreader as well.

    • @MrVectorviper
      @MrVectorviper 8 років тому

      We had the Boom manufactured at Pastro Engineering who are a local engineering business. The boom uses the same heads and outlets as our seeder, just twice as wide. It works well for us and we can variable rate multiple products.
