We started this channel to showcase some of our projects and "Tech Tips". We are a small community college doing BIG things - mostly training new technicians to go out and work in the marine industry. Working on boats is the BEST! We're still figuring out this UA-cam thing, but feel free to comment and share with your friends.
One Ocean: Generator Removal, Update, & Open House
We are only in the 3rd week of a major refit at the Marine Technology Center, but we've already gotten the engine and the generator out! This video is about our upcoming open house, tour of the MT facility, and of our current project "One Ocean".
One Ocean will be used for an educational journey and is a custom Bob Perry 48' ketch.
Actually we'll be showcasing the entire expedition along with the boat during the open house, so it's going to be a great event. Don't worry, we know it was short notice, but we'll have many more opportunities to interact with the crew, learn about our project, and tour the boat before they depart in May 2025!
Information about the expedition can be found at:
www.oneislandoneocean.com/
Also on social media: oneisland.oneocean
As always, if you or someone you know is interested in the program, check us out!

One Ocean: Week 2, Major Refit Updates from the Marine Technology Center
Переглядів 215День тому
The second week was super busy. It's actually the third week of the refit because we started in the water, at the boat yard, removed the rig, all during the first week. However, for the two weeks under our care at Skagit Valley College we got a tremendous amount of work completed. Information about the expedition can be found at: www.oneislandoneocean.com/ Also on social media: oneisland.oneoce...
Another "Free Boat" this one has potential!

Every week or two the Marine Technology Program and Skagit Valley College gets offered a "Free" boat. Our saying is there is nothing more expensive than FREE!!! Normally they are complete disasters, have trees growing out of them, no trailer, or need 3X value in repairs. Sometimes we get really great donations, and our program is highly regarded and often gets great community support. This Aspe...
One Ocean: Removing the AWFUL / Stinky sanitation system. FUN times at the Marine Technology Center!
Переглядів 33714 днів тому
The owners knew from the first time they stepped onboard this custom ketch that the sanitation system needed some work. The boat stunk, seriously. Even though they thought the tanks were empty when we moved the boat to the Marine Technology Center, the aft toilet quickly backed up with smelly brown water.... the students or 'Technicians in Training" noticed this during the first week so we had ...

Messing Around at Marine Tech: Tim's Engine Start
Переглядів 2652 місяці тому
Always something fun happening at the Marine Technology Center in Anacortes. Student Tim had a request to check on a 'reported' rebuilt diesel motor before it was to be installed into a sailboat at Emerald Marine Carpentry in our wonderful little maritime town. It took three attempts because he forgot a couple of details and the lift pump was bad, but eventually it fired up, sounded good, and h...
StarPod BlackPearl

Last season we tried out the StarLink System and it worked great but it was still the original "Portable" unit and we HATE anything that's not permanent on a boat. After realizing we wanted to have internet on the boat, we started looking for a solution to mount our Gen 2 dish. There were lot's of DIY solutions, but as an instructor the end of Spring quarter and departure deadlines happen simul...
I Love Alaska!

This was an amazing day to be in S.E. Alsaka! Seek Alaska Tours was the perfect last day of our Waggoner Flotilla. This year we went beyond Ketchikan for the group and ended in Petersburg after traveling for 24 days. We were mostly slow boats, so the 800 miles up the inside passage takes a while, we average 6 hours per day underway. This was a highlight for our group and Seek Alaska had to do t...
Moving "Lady MT" outside, almost time to sea-trial! & end of the school year

We ran out of time this year and clearly took on too many projects. The Lady MT is very close to being finished, but we need to stop for summer break. All the final exams are done, the awards are given, and students graduated. Many of our students that have been working on re-powering this 25' Ranger Tug are coming back for their second year of coursework and will be eager to get this project f...
"Lady MT": Final Report on re-powering a 25' Ranger Tug, almost done - but postponed launch

Great progress the past two weeks. However, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and are making great progress on this project. Problem we are facing is no more time! Final exams next week and then everyone is gone for the summer holiday. We were so close to launching and sea-trials! It'll be ok, we'll finish up the last few details in August and do the sea-trials in September. Then th...

Tech Tip#10: Bilge Pump in a Bucket, updated! New US Sailing regulation

We've been talking about bilge pump in a bucket for years! At the Marine Technology Center we have put many of these together, and have stories where they have saved vessels from sinking! This system is portable, easy to deploy, and can be giving to another mariner in distress. What do you have in your boat for emergency de-watering? These are not that expensive or difficult to put together, co...
Lady M: Final, Final, Engine Installation on a 25' Ranger Tug

Great progress this week and we spent very little of our funds. Bank account is getting a little low after purchasing the $25,000 engine, and then the $5,000 in parts we spent a week ago!! However, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and are making great progress on this project. The new decals and lettering look great. It won't be too many more weeks before we can splash the Lady MT ...

2024 What's Happening at the Marine Technology Center
Who is the manufacturer/size of this boat? Thanks
It's a Skookum 47' Custom. Skookum's were designed by Ed Monk Sr. and built in Port Townsend, WA. This one started as just a hull in about 1970 (last 47' to come out of the mold) and was completed by a friend of mine in Anacortes, WA I've been the current caretaker for over 15 years
@@SVCSkallywags Thanks! Will be fun to follow you guys along. :)
Fun to watch. The data and tech seems cool but also more to go wrong over time
I like tech, and fixing things :) but the engine is completely mechanical, so very reliable
Beautiful boat. May I make a suggestion: RIP OUT that unfinished and ugly plywood dashboard, PLEASE! With only a small effort you could create a decently sanded, varnished and properly finished backing for your new navigation system. What you have now looks like a few kids cut out some rough holes in a piece of leftover ply and shoved the chart plotters and gauges into it, all in a hurry too. Compare the terrible dash to the wonderful ceiling in the cabin and the carefully varnished hatch frames etc. Show the respect this vessel deserves.
Last winter I did all the cabin upgrades, and the pilot house will get completely redone soon! I always take the summers off and go cruising, winters I do inside projects.
Fun to watch you guys work through a problem with the tools at hand. I'll be there Friday for a campus visit with my son, so we'll be sure to stick around for the One Ocean openhouse.
Sounds great
Where were the students?
We did this with just 3 people. Students have been logging lots of hours on this project so far. This day we only had 1: Josh was down in the hole with Mark (owner), I ran the lift. I'm keeping a log of hours logged by staff, students, and volunteers. It'll be in a future video sometime.
🎉
Okay I like this owner!!!
Fluid controls and steering cables? Redundant systems?
Fluid controls x 2 - and I have spare parts. Good system. Steering is 2 completely independent systems. Traditional cable from the wheel in the cockpit to a quadrant. Then a complete, separate, hydraulic system for the inside helm, then a third system: the emergency tiller!! Rudder removed and rebuilt a few years back. Should be good to go!!
@@SVCSkallywags Very cool about all the steering systems- seems like a great feature for an expedition boat!
Considering the parts supply problem with Hynautics will you be sticking with this control system?? Great project and channel👍👍
Hynautics have been historically reliable. Fortunately I have plenty of spares for the entire system! Although only the outside throttle is stiff and needs replacement.
Thanks for watching - lots of great projects coming out soon.
Cant wait for the thruster tube install. Will be doing that on my boat next year.
We have started planning already and will drill the locate holes next week. We want to get it glassed in before the cold weather gets happens :)
Coool
Yes, but now what will we do with it before parting it out????
I have been doing a lot of reading about historical and current Arctic exploration regarding ship/boat design and sea conditions. Will there be any additional hull reinforcement, specially made fenders (?), rudder and prop protection, or any other techniques used to navigate possible small ice flows in the Northern Passage? Curious 🤔
Great questions! We'll be covering these in upcoming videos. :)
Very curious about this one -- QUESTION -- Can I be so bold as to ask for some price? What would this cost to buy "as is where is", now? How much once restored?
We are interviewing the owners this week, for two reasons: All about the boat, and then all about the expedition. Stay tuned. Obviously, one will be about the planned trip, the other about buying the boat, all the good things we don't have to do, and then all the decisions, money, and repairs we do have to do to be ready to leave May 2025. All about education! It takes us a week to two to edit and get online. Thanks for the questions, following, and being patient.
@@SVCSkallywags ..checking...
We're working on our holding tank today- thanks for the septic spirit! Dirty business but very much necessary!
Behind you all the way… but from a distance, get er done 😍
You got this!
Fun times! Been there done that. I charge a 'black water surcharge' for any time I work on the sewage system. That covers emptying and cleaning of my 'sewer use only' wet/dry vac, replacement filter, gloves, disposal of sewage, etc.
A you should! Some yards apply a fee that goes straight to the technician, like an extra $10/hr :)
Whata make / model and year is this? Is it actually called a Perry 48?? It doesn't show up on sailboatdata,,,
It's just a Custom 48' by Bob - only 1 built. I've scheduled an interview this Sunday with the owners talking about the boat / expedition. It'll take a week so to get them edited and up to UA-cam - stay tuned for lots more info.
Also, Bob is on the mend and he's agreed to do an interview about the boat and design this fall. It's always fun to visit with Bob
@@SVCSkallywags ...very interesting looking ketch... kinda looks about perfect tbh.
Glad you're back! Exciting project!
Thanks! You're going to like this boat!
Get Bob on board👍
That's the plan!
Can't wait to follow along on the refit guys.
Thanks! It's going to be fast and fun!!
Looks like fun.
Fun yes, and lots of work! But that's what we do. Really enjoy showing students how to fix these things.
Great project. Looking forward to follow along.
Welcome aboard! This is the biggest thing we've been involved in!!
Had one for 15 years, loved it. So quiet 8L3B 245 hp 1150 rpm. Full stick 45lts/hr and at 800 fishing speed app. 25 tlr/hr
Love those engines!
Tour????
Absolutely fantastic content. Great job explaining your techniques for troubleshooting boat dc systems
Thanks for watching! I've been meaning to create some more, but teaching has been keeping me far too busy!
Click bait. What actually DON’T SHOW is installing the plate!! Useless vid.
Could you use an in-line pump like a facet purolater cube and not need the extra valve?
The reason for the valve is most pumps restrict the fuel flow too much. You don't want to starve the engine for fuel.
Any chance you have the make and model of that AC line splitter? Thanks for very helpful videos!!!!
Sorry for the delay - summer - been out sailing :) We have many at school. I think the favorite is: Triplett ET200 AC Line Splitter and GFCI Outlet/Receptacle Tester with 5 Visual Indicators

Coming to MT next Friday the 27th - SO exciting!!!
That's a big one! Excited to see the progress!
It's HUGE - and we all said 'never again' on that scale. But it's for a good cause and has a great story!!
Wow!
Going to be SO much fun!!! Already getting started
Exciting stuff guys! - Alejo
It just keeps getting better! Can't wait to share all the details!!
Looking forward to the sailboat refit!
Yes, another sailboat refit - my favorite!
Thank you - just subscribed - Cheers
Welcome aboard!
An excellent tip. Thank you for posting this.
Glad it was helpful! We have a BUNCH more we want to publish next year, after we get the new round of students going!
Thanks for taking the time to put thus video together. Scott Boston, Ma
Our pleasure - we have SO much we want to share. Stay tuned, more to come. After we get the new students up and going!!!
Nice work brothers
Thanks, always something fun @ MT!!!!
Awesome Mike! I'm jealous... Thanks for sharing! - Alejo
Thanks for watching! It's been another AMAZING summer so far!
And I hope you are enjoying summer as well!
'what's JB weld?' haha love this bloke!
Bob is Great - will do another visit end of summer!!
Solar just makes so much sense. I'm on a much smaller catamaran with just 3200W but I also haven't plugged in. My cruising speed is lower, 4-5 knots using 2000W of power, but I do have a mast and will hopefully have new sails soon so I can move faster when the wind is blowing. Last season without the sails was no issue though, because the boat just charges as you go, so my battery banks are just about always full! It's like carrying your own fuel refinery onboard, except you have no mess, no smells and no costs!
Love it! Met them again this summer - They went further into Glacier Bay. More clouds & rain, but still hadn't plugged in. A local Port Townsend company is looking a a production vessel similar to this, but a little smaller. I think it's awesome!! Our solar only runs the house loads, still rely on diesel for propulsion
Thanks for the great breakdown! I am just about to do this for a client and it sure was nice having this video to see what I am getting into. Also, excellent for potential boat purchases :-) Thanks team! Hope you're catching tons of halibut!
You are so welcome! It was so much fun - Art got the biggest Halibut!
Decent overview but a few comments. The voltage checker is commonly called a chicken stick. The bigger clamps are battery clamps not alligator clamps. A microfarad check is for capacitance. Ohms are for continuity. Fuel gauges must be paired to the sender and not all senders are full ground = full/pegged. Some sensors might be 5v on newer engines. The starter has a solenoid on it and that is a relay. All motors and most gadgets have the required voltage and draw in amps on them so this can be useful for checking condition. Just like older cars many previous owners upgraded/added things without electrical knowledge. If there are splices in the system or other obvious modifications check them out as a potential source of overdraw or other sadness.
Thanks, planning on a version 2.0, once we finish a few other projects
Do you think this can work underwater?
I’m sure it would! Works amazingly well
Did you try it underwater - I'm sure it would work?
I have never before left a negative comment to a you tube video. However I am very fortunate to have a basic understanding of galvanic isolation and boat electrics safety as I’m afraid that this was a very confusing video. I would suspect that a script would have reduced this. To fumble around with various cables and saying that “this should beep” and it didn’t or vice versa really didn’t have the desired effect of passing on critical information. And, like the court lawyer says, something cannot be unsaid. If I was a newbie to the subject, by eight minutes in I would have been hopeless confused. I personally consider Nigel Calder to be an invaluable source of brilliant information and am somewhat disappointed with this offering. This is intended as positive criticism - I have no desire to be a keyboard warrior and giving grief for the sake of it. I have enjoyed many other of your videos. Thanks. Mark K
Mark - yes, after this I worked on a reference guide. 1 page to make it clearer how to check a shore power connection for safety and isolation. Under resources at my website cruiserscollege.org. We got too much on our plates and hurried a bit.
A great corrugated hose for a portable pump can be bought at a pool supply store. I have a 1.5 inch pool vacuumed hose, very cooperative
Thanks for sharing
Great presentation video, very clear and very educational ! I wish i had a teacher like you when i was a student, keep up the good work !
Thank you! 😃
Is that a wig? 😂
:)
You make it look easy, but it is NOT! Can you go through the step by step process for uploading the firmware to your laptop? Thanks
Sorry for the delay - out on summer holiday. Wakespeed is making great changes and it will be way easier now using the App, this is 'old' technology now - things change so fast!
Hi Michael, great video!! Im interested in getting certified to work in this field. I currently have an A.A.S in Electronics Engineering but love the marine industry. Is there a school that you know of in NJ to assist me?
Two closest are - IYRS, International Yacht Restoration, and the Landings School. I've been to both. Private, so more expensive than our Community College, but good schools.
Is there any room in the flotilla this year, 2024 -in theJun departure date?
Unfortunately, no - we filled up shortly after the Seattle Boat Show.
Sure would help if you had covered how to block the fill and vent tubes in order to do the pressure test. After all, 99% of people searching for and watching this video are testing a "long ago" INSTALLED tank. Major fail in this video.
Great feedback - we hadn't thought about that when we were in the middle of that refit.
