We started this channel to showcase some of our projects and "Tech Tips". We are a small community college doing BIG things - mostly training new technicians to go out and work in the marine industry. Working on boats is the BEST! We're still figuring out this UA-cam thing, but feel free to comment and share with your friends.
One Ocean: Battery Bank Removal & Testing. How we do state of health testing at SVC
This Bob Perry custom ketch is going on 30 years old and had a bunch of work done in 2009, which was 15 years ago. We had no idea when the batteries were installed, so a proper discharge test was required to determine the SOH (State of Health) for the house battery bank. We could test the start batteries with a basic conductance test.
The batteries tested at ~ 70%, which is OK, for normal cruising. Considering the trip this boat is making up through the Northwest Passage, across the equator, around Cape Horn, and then back to Anacortes we will replace and upgrade the battery bank.
We'll be ready to go Around the Americas by May 2025!
One Ocean will be used for an educational journey and is a custom Bob Perry 48' ketch.
Actually we'll be showcasing the entire expedition along with the boat on social media for the entire 14 month, 27,000 NM journey.
Information about the expedition can be found at:

One Ocean: Chainplate Removal & Inspection, we don't want the mast to fall down!
Переглядів 248День тому
Chainplate Removal is super important on any used/older sailboat. Many masts have crashed down due to failed chainplates. Stainless Steel is an amazing metal alloy but it is susceptible to crevice corrosion - something that happens in the dark places you cannot see. Onboard 'One Ocean' I'd rather not have a failure of this type. This Bob Perry custom ketch is going on 30 years old and had a bun...
One Ocean: Adding a BowThruster Part One
Переглядів 18014 днів тому
Cutting big holes in boats! As marine technicians we often are drilling holes in boats, it's what we do! We haven't done too many this big - an 8" hole for the new bow thruster. We decided to do a thruster while the vessel was at the Marine Technology Center in Anacortes because we are sailing on a schedule which often complicates things. The science and education is what drives the schedule so...
One Ocean: We Pulled the Engine!

We are only in the 4th week of a major refit at the Marine Technology Center, but we've already gotten the engine and the generator out! This video is about getting the Yanmar diesel engine out of the boat. The good news is that we are basically done taking the boat apart. Which means we are about to start putting it back together - it'll be ready to go Around the Americas by May 2025! One Ocea...

The second week was super busy. It's actually the third week of the refit because we started in the water, at the boat yard, removed the rig, all during the first week. However, for the two weeks under our care at Skagit Valley College we got a tremendous amount of work completed. Another "Free Boat" this one has potential!
Переглядів 317Місяць тому
Every week or two the Marine Technology Program and Skagit Valley College gets offered a "Free" boat. Our saying is there is nothing more expensive than FREE!!! Normally they are complete disasters, have trees growing out of them, no trailer, or need 3X value in repairs. Sometimes we get really great donations, and our program is highly regarded and often gets great community support. This Aspe...
One Ocean: Removing the AWFUL / Stinky sanitation system. FUN times at the Marine Technology Center!
Переглядів 359Місяць тому
The owners knew from the first time they stepped onboard this custom ketch that the sanitation system needed some work. The boat stunk, seriously. Even though they thought the tanks were empty when we moved the boat to the Marine Technology Center, the aft toilet quickly backed up with smelly brown water.... the students or 'Technicians in Training" noticed this during the first week so we had ...

Messing Around at Marine Tech: Tim's Engine Start
Переглядів 2693 місяці тому
Always something fun happening at the Marine Technology Center in Anacortes. Student Tim had a request to check on a 'reported' rebuilt diesel motor before it was to be installed into a sailboat at Emerald Marine Carpentry in our wonderful little maritime town. It took three attempts because he forgot a couple of details and the lift pump was bad, but eventually it fired up, sounded good, and h...

Last season we tried out the StarLink System and it worked great but it was still the original "Portable" unit and we HATE anything that's not permanent on a boat. There were lot's of DIY solutions, but as an instructor the end of Spring quarter and departure deadlines happen simul...

This was an amazing day to be in S.E. Alsaka! Seek Alaska Tours was the perfect last day of our Waggoner Flotilla. This year we went beyond Ketchikan for the group and ended in Petersburg after traveling for 24 days. We were mostly slow boats, so the 800 miles up the inside passage takes a while, we average 6 hours per day underway. This was a highlight for our group and Seek Alaska had to do t...

All the final exams are done, the awards are given, and students graduated. Many of our students that have been working on re-powering this 25' Ranger Tug are coming back for their second year of coursework and will be eager to get this project f...

"Tech Tips" are GOLDEN.
My favorite & why I started the channel! Time to make some more
Great explanation of how to properly test batteries! Those batteries were not properly installed in a leak free box.
Just a question, as you know the likely fail points, why not reinforce that area, to spread the load more , don’t see why you couldn’t have second plate welded over say a 3rd of the chain plate, little more wight. But not that much, there may be a reason that I don’t get, but would love to know
Well, I'm not an engineer... However these chain plates are significantly larger than those on other similar sized rigs. They made it 30 years, which is very good. We feel that replacing with the same is a good fit.
Great job guys, looking forward to seeing the holes punched👍 One question - how will you bend that plate?
After we get it polished and punched, then we use a big hydraulic press to bend these 4, massive 1/2" thick pieces of stainless steel :)
Nice attention to detail! Thank you again for taking the rest of us along for the removal & inspection!
You bet! We enjoy showing off our projects. Messing around with boats is SO much FUN!
Nice project. Why so far from the bow or is it just the camera lens?
I think it's mostly the wide angle lens on thee GoPro. We did have to come aft far enough that we could do a proper job of getting the underside of the tube glassed to the hull.
I have a question, I’m a sailor and my plane is to come up the coast from Panama, planning my Canadian Alaska passage. can you sail the inside passage? Watched a number of videos and everyone is motoring? Like 400/500 miles?
Yes, during a flotilla with goal:get you there quickly - not a lot of sailing. You can sail much more than we did. Afternoon winds are more favorable and we always leave early. However, with most of these passages prevailing winds are only favorable 50% of the time. Often most people don't wait for the winds to switch.
a Gardner shouldn't smoke like that! Check the injectors.
I agree - it hadn't been run in a VERY long time. Also, it sounds like it might have a 'miss'. We'll run it again, get it up to temp, and check injectors. We still don't have a boat to put it in, so hard to load it up and do proper testing!
what Yanmar model is that Beamer?
Never mind. I saw it 4LH-HTE
4LH-HTE: 145 hp, big block industrial Yanmar.
It's checking out OK!! Yeah!
I have a couple of 4LH-DTE in my boat
Making great progress guys!
WE are very happy with the progress!
Saw a Gardner 6lx for sale in port Townsend for $100, tempting project.
Always tempting - amazing engines! I now caretake two of them. Have several friends with them, and am considering another one.... except too busy!!!
Michael, your video is wonderful and educational. Loved it. I could use a little feedback from you. I am interested in getting a clamp meter. I am considering Fluke 375 vs 393. The price is similar. 393 shows voltage and DC current simultaneously and rated for more voltage with heavy duty DC voltage to 1500 V. Would you have preferred 393 over 375 if you were buying another unit and have a boat?
I think both very similar. On boats we never need high voltage DC. I prefer the 375 now only because I've learned and used this one for a number of years.
@ thank you
Who is the manufacturer/size of this boat? Thanks
It's a Skookum 47' Custom. Skookum's were designed by Ed Monk Sr. and built in Port Townsend, WA. This one started as just a hull in about 1970 (last 47' to come out of the mold) and was completed by a friend of mine in Anacortes, WA I've been the current caretaker for over 15 years
@@SVCSkallywags Thanks! Will be fun to follow you guys along. :)
Fun to watch. The data and tech seems cool but also more to go wrong over time
I like tech, and fixing things :) but the engine is completely mechanical, so very reliable
Beautiful boat. May I make a suggestion: RIP OUT that unfinished and ugly plywood dashboard, PLEASE! With only a small effort you could create a decently sanded, varnished and properly finished backing for your new navigation system. What you have now looks like a few kids cut out some rough holes in a piece of leftover ply and shoved the chart plotters and gauges into it, all in a hurry too. Compare the terrible dash to the wonderful ceiling in the cabin and the carefully varnished hatch frames etc. Show the respect this vessel deserves.
Last winter I did all the cabin upgrades, and the pilot house will get completely redone soon! I always take the summers off and go cruising, winters I do inside projects.
Fun to watch you guys work through a problem with the tools at hand. I'll be there Friday for a campus visit with my son, so we'll be sure to stick around for the One Ocean openhouse.
Sounds great
Where were the students?
We did this with just 3 people. Students have been logging lots of hours on this project so far. This day we only had 1: Josh was down in the hole with Mark (owner), I ran the lift. I'm keeping a log of hours logged by staff, students, and volunteers. It'll be in a future video sometime.
🎉
Okay I like this owner!!!
Fluid controls and steering cables? Redundant systems?
Fluid controls x 2 - and I have spare parts. Good system. Steering is 2 completely independent systems. Traditional cable from the wheel in the cockpit to a quadrant. Then a complete, separate, hydraulic system for the inside helm, then a third system: the emergency tiller!! Rudder removed and rebuilt a few years back. Should be good to go!!
@@SVCSkallywags Very cool about all the steering systems- seems like a great feature for an expedition boat!
Considering the parts supply problem with Hynautics will you be sticking with this control system?? Great project and channel👍👍
Hynautics have been historically reliable. Fortunately I have plenty of spares for the entire system! Although only the outside throttle is stiff and needs replacement.
Thanks for watching - lots of great projects coming out soon.
Cant wait for the thruster tube install. Will be doing that on my boat next year.
We have started planning already and will drill the locate holes next week. We want to get it glassed in before the cold weather gets happens :)
Coool
Yes, but now what will we do with it before parting it out????
I have been doing a lot of reading about historical and current Arctic exploration regarding ship/boat design and sea conditions. Will there be any additional hull reinforcement, specially made fenders (?), rudder and prop protection, or any other techniques used to navigate possible small ice flows in the Northern Passage? Curious 🤔
Great questions! We'll be covering these in upcoming videos. :)
Very curious about this one -- QUESTION -- Can I be so bold as to ask for some price? What would this cost to buy "as is where is", now? How much once restored?
We are interviewing the owners this week, for two reasons: All about the boat, and then all about the expedition. Stay tuned. Obviously, one will be about the planned trip, the other about buying the boat, all the good things we don't have to do, and then all the decisions, money, and repairs we do have to do to be ready to leave May 2025. All about education! It takes us a week to two to edit and get online. Thanks for the questions, following, and being patient.
@@SVCSkallywags ..checking...
We're working on our holding tank today- thanks for the septic spirit! Dirty business but very much necessary!
Behind you all the way… but from a distance, get er done 😍
You got this!
Fun times! Been there done that. I charge a 'black water surcharge' for any time I work on the sewage system. That covers emptying and cleaning of my 'sewer use only' wet/dry vac, replacement filter, gloves, disposal of sewage, etc.
A you should! Some yards apply a fee that goes straight to the technician, like an extra $10/hr :)
Whata make / model and year is this? Is it actually called a Perry 48?? It doesn't show up on sailboatdata,,,
It's just a Custom 48' by Bob - only 1 built. I've scheduled an interview this Sunday with the owners talking about the boat / expedition. It'll take a week so to get them edited and up to UA-cam - stay tuned for lots more info.
Also, Bob is on the mend and he's agreed to do an interview about the boat and design this fall. It's always fun to visit with Bob
@@SVCSkallywags ...very interesting looking ketch... kinda looks about perfect tbh.
Glad you're back! Exciting project!
Thanks! You're going to like this boat!
Get Bob on board👍
That's the plan!
Can't wait to follow along on the refit guys.
Thanks! It's going to be fast and fun!!
Looks like fun.
Fun yes, and lots of work! But that's what we do. Really enjoy showing students how to fix these things.
Great project. Looking forward to follow along.
Welcome aboard! This is the biggest thing we've been involved in!!
Had one for 15 years, loved it. So quiet 8L3B 245 hp 1150 rpm. Full stick 45lts/hr and at 800 fishing speed app. 25 tlr/hr
Love those engines!
Tour????
Absolutely fantastic content. Great job explaining your techniques for troubleshooting boat dc systems
Thanks for watching! I've been meaning to create some more, but teaching has been keeping me far too busy!
Click bait. What actually DON’T SHOW is installing the plate!! Useless vid.
Could you use an in-line pump like a facet purolater cube and not need the extra valve?
The reason for the valve is most pumps restrict the fuel flow too much. You don't want to starve the engine for fuel.
Any chance you have the make and model of that AC line splitter? Thanks for very helpful videos!!!!
Sorry for the delay - summer - been out sailing :) We have many at school. I think the favorite is: Triplett ET200 AC Line Splitter and GFCI Outlet/Receptacle Tester with 5 Visual Indicators
