Unknown Practice + Highlights in the Staudacher
As I get closer competing, I'm starting to fly at least an unknown sequence 3-5 times a week. Unknowns is what separates pilots in competitions. You don't get time to practice and are typically given the sequence 12 hours before you get to fly it. You cannot practice it, so you really need to be competent in flying all the catalog figures. Focus needs to be on positioning, flying consistently, and not make mistakes because one hard zero can mean the difference between winning and losing. I randomly select an unknowns from past competitions and plan out my flight, and then go fly. My goal is simple: Keep it in the box, and don't make mistakes. :)

      Yes it was. The floor for Advanced is 566' AGL. In a competition I would usually fly to 800' as my lowest point. On this one, I the lowest I got was bang on 800'. The closer to the floor of the box, the better the plane presents due to parallax. Makes the judges job easier.

      @kahaaerosports 2 роки тому

      @@Fedemizrahi mine doesn't have a manifold gauge, but I'm typically flying acro between 2700-3000rpm. On the downlines I'm pulling the power back so the RPM doesn't go above 3000. If yours has a constant speed prop, I'd try to figure where the prop is most efficient. You can do this by adjusting the prop level and taking note of airspeed in level flight. Higher rpms don't alway mean more efficiency. If you have a fixed pitch prop, I'd be running like I do mine if you're trying to get the most amount of performance out of the airplane without going above 3000. It comes down to the airplane at the end of the day. If you're competing in the airplane, you want as much power/thrust as possible (respecting limits of course) to fly the maneuvers as cleanly as possible. Hope that makes sense.

    I met an old alaskan bush pilot who told me a story about flying a rented piper low wing over Wyoming. Same thing happened to him, control cable failed at near full-throttle. He thought "how am i going to land this thing before i run out of gas?" Ended up landing it by pulling the mixture, kept the speed up, and opened mixture momentarily just to see if it would re start at will, and it did. So he landed without issue at the nearest airport. Crazy part of the story... He figured out he could push full throttle as the cable was broken, but inside a sleeve so you could push wide open... being a weekend and no mechanics or parts available at that little Wyoming airstrip, he departed with the broken cable. This took place in the '80s when one could get away with things. Haha!

    Very nice. What is the indicated air speed to enter in the loop and roll ?

    • @kahaaerosports
      @kahaaerosports 2 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment. It depends on the loop and the roll type. If I'm flying a competition loop I enter at 160mph, pull 5G and that creates close to a "perfectly" round loop that will score a 9 (keep in mind I don't have inverted fuel so the engine always cuts out under 1g. At the top of the loop, the engine is not running. When I'm just messing around, 145mph @4g works fine although not symmetrical. For the rolls, again because the engine cuts under 1g, if I'm flying a barrel roll, 120mph is fine. If I'm flying a vanilla aileron roll, 120mph will work but you need to keep the nose up quite a bit and need a lot of top rudder in knife edge. For competition standard, I'll fly at minimum 145mph for an aileron roll. 4 point or 8 point, I'll fly 160mph to Vne (180mph). That way I can make the points/hesitations equal with having to pick up the nose with the rudder so the airplane flies along the horizontal plane cleanly. Hope that helps!

    First and foremost, glad you had the skills and means to make a safe landing. Good job! However, you should have never had this happen. There is no reason a pilot should have a throttle cable failure if the original was installed properly. How about a follow up video of why the cable broke and what changes are being made to make sure this never happens again? I have worked on many types of aircraft over 50+ years of being an A&P with inspection authorization here in the US. Normal design of throttle control, if the control cable is disconnected from the throttle shaft, it should go to wide open throttle. Throttle, prop, carb heat and mixture controls are key items of any annual inspection. Has any previous repairs/replacement been made? Prop control. Aerobatic to non-aerobatic design is different. However, this difference has to do with engine oil pressure loss and what happens. Aerobatic aircraft are designed to go to high pitch, to avoid over revving the engine during maneuvers where short amount of times the oil supply can be compromised due to g forces. Non-aerobatic designs, loss of oil pressure forces the prop to low pitch. This is to allow full engine rpm, for example during take-off. Better to allow the engine to produce enough power as asked by the pilot in a loss of oil pressure. In your case, this should not have been a factor. You could have gone to low pitch and because you had oil pressure (prop is rotating, oil pump is producing), the prop governor would have controlled engine speed as it normally does.

    • @kahaaerosports
      @kahaaerosports 2 роки тому

      All valid points Eric and you're right, the cable should have never broken. I thought about doing a follow up to show the break. Based on the design we saw, it wasn't the greatest of systems so we're exploring better options with some redundancy. We had the airplane inspected by 2 different mechanics over the last 12 months, not to mention our own eyes and hands do some work to. The throttle cable was not inspected by us, but can't speak on behalf of the mechanic. Needless to say, it will be a thorough annual check item for us. Thanks for the comment!

    • @53Ericd
      @53Ericd 2 роки тому

      @@kahaaerosports , please do a follow-up video. I would suggest going through the log books to see what, if anything had been done to the throttle system. Check if anything is unique or different from the original design. There should be hard stops at the throttle shaft (engine end) for idle and wide open throttle, and on the throttle quadrant (cockpit end). With most aircraft, the cable system should be adjusted to first land on the throttle shaft idle stop followed by the quadrant stop. For full open, the same, the throttle shaft full open stop followed by the quadrant stop. If the cable system is set in this fashion, there is no way to over stress the cable. Common things that can affect cable system operation include any bellcranks, and bearings. They need close inspection to insure no binding or excess play. Look forward to your findings. Happy flying! 👍

  • @KenBywater
    @KenBywater 2 роки тому

    Could there have been a possibility that the engine throttle could have rolled back toward idle as a result of prolonged vibration or g? Could have been a bad decision to fly away from your home field. It's the things that you don't do that results in success :-)

    • @kahaaerosports
      @kahaaerosports 2 роки тому

      Lots to consider for sure. I was almost certain that the throttle cable would not roll back because I could tell the break was in the sheathing and I could use the throttle rod to butt up against the cable preventing it from moving. I had a friend who have his cable disconnect within the engine bay in his One Design, and the engine went into mechanical idle. This is a great conversation starter about "What Ifs". Something so simple can cause so much potential risk. Thanks for the great comment!

    • @53Ericd
      @53Ericd 2 роки тому

      Standard design of throttle systems, if cable becomes free of throttle shaft, the shaft is spring loaded to full open throttle. This is a feature that should be check at every annual inspection.
