Wife, mother, ultra runner.
Follow me on my journey from broken back to ultra.
I hope to give you valuable insights on:
- how to get started in running
- upping distance and getting ultra-ready
- juggling home life
- training methodologies
- injury prevention
- kit reviews & recommendations
- plus anything else I may wax lyrical about...
I advocate that women can have their own interests outside of family life (and should run ultras to rebalance gender imbalance in the sport).
My story:
I accidentally started a couch to 5k program in 2018 and loved it. It made me realise that with motherhood I’d lost lost part of my identity. Running became my passion.
I built up to half marathon and set my sights on ultra distances, but at the start of 2020 I was in a skiing accident. I broke 3 sacral vertebrae in my back.
After a long rehab, I vowed to do an ultra, but I had to restart training from scratch.
So, it’s 2021. I’m back training. I’m better informed and more determined than ever!

Virtual London run: Ealing to Buckingham Palace via parks. Paying respects to HRH Prince Philip DofE

Paying my respects to HRH Prince Philip 1921-2022. Instead of my usual long run to Richmond Park, I decided it would be fitting to run from Ealing to Buckingham palace; a 26km (16.5 mile) round trip. Route: Ealing - Ealing Common - Acton - Shepherds Bush - Holland Park - Hyde Park - Green Park - Buckingham Palace. And back again retracing my steps. Apologies for shaky-cam!

Like it. But if not gortex than what for running
extra 20# is way too heavy
Good 👍
Waterproof trail runners are great in heavy rain and snow. I like them with gaiters for mountain hiking in winter when I'm not wearing boots. When the temperature is over about 11/12 deg C I don't bother with GTX even on very wet days because my feet stay warm when wet and the non membrane shoes dry faster. I did a 25km coastal trail yesterday and my Lowa Amplux shoes dried quickly after a few dips in the sea. The number one problem to avoid whether wearing GTX or non membrane shoes is leaving your feet wet for hours in cold conditions. In extreme cold you run the risk of frostbite. In less cold conditions trench foot is a possibility. I know some people like to wear waterproof socks with their non membrane trail runners and that's a good choice too. If you're going for a multi day hike shoes in cold conditions I'd always take along a pair of waterproof socks just in case. I even do it with GTX shoes in case they fail or get so wet I can't dry them out
This video has been SO helpful in purchasing my first ever pair of trail running shoes. I was tied between the New Balance Heirro 7 regular or GTX version. This video helped me just choose the regular. Thank you so much!
Glad you found it helpful 😊
Goretex boots yes. Goretex shoes never. Cold is the other time you may want goretex, one wet cold foot will only get colder. Sealskinz socks are underrated.
Too the point info...good keep at it !!!
Great video! Non Gore-tex it is 🙌🏼
The shoe fits very very wide. Although it doesn't look like it. Despite tightening it to it's limit i still kept sliding forward and had to extract my toenails. After ,100k. Race in the rain. Underfoot felt fantastic though.
I like original Sense (it looks like no longer manufactured). They are great crossover shoes with small lugs, which makes them good both for forest trails (but not soft mud), and occasional paved roads.
Verrry interesting vid Red.
Since I live in snowy , rainy, cold, New England.................I love my Gore tex Cascadia 16's
THANK-YOU.. I got a really good deal on this shoe..Cascadia 15...and wanted a real runner's P O V before I pick it up.Hoping 9D fits.
you do not need Gore-tex shoes unless in snow
I was very tempted to a pair of gore-tex and have watched a number of videos on the pros and cons but this is the clearest one so far. Many thanks. I think I have gone off the idea! Although I do like the advice about the snow. My feet get very cold so may help in the winter.
How are the merrell long sky for trail ultras upto 50 miles?
made in Vietnam?
are u England?i am Chinese
Nice review I especially like the Merrell. Just a thought I do find videos where the host looks at the camera screen instead of the lens, hard to watch.
great tip
Sense 4 actually weighs the same as the slab ultra 3.
Hi have you tested the merrell rubato. Which Is Better for long distances, cushion and large toe box? The mtl or rubato? Thanks
Really great rewiew, very helpful! Thanks for sharing!!
Hi, great review thanks. Have you any plans on trying the Cascadia 16? Also what other trail shoes do you enjoy using? I have the cascadia 15 and they feel a bit clumpy on road but I like how they protect my feet.
Thanks. I love love love the Salomon S/Lab Ultra 3s and they’re my go-to (non-muddy) trail shoes.

How does the Lab ultra 3 and the Sense Ride 4 compare for very long distances both for hiking and running? As I understand, the sense ride is more cushened, but the Lab ultra is recommended for long distances. Why is that?
Hi there. Thanks for watching! The s/Lab is more of a performance/race shoe in that it’s light, breathable, flexible upper and responsive. That said, I’d say if you were using it for hiking as well, then the sense ride 4 is a better option, it’s more of an every day trail shoe that would work well for hikes, and I’d say you would prob get better protection from the upper on the sense ride as well.
@@wifemotherultrarunner Perfect! Thank you very much for your insights :-)
Great review thank you, I am running the marathon des sables next year and am looking for a shoe that can really serve for time on my feet. Would you recommend the Cascadia or would have another cushioned shoe you would recommend like the G270 from Inov8 etc please?
Desert shoes are a whole other ball game, you need to consider hardiness to rocky terrain, midsole resistance to heat compression, and ability to fit desert gaiters. (As well as usual considerations of fit, cushioning, toe protection and breathability.) I recommend searching specifically for desert shoe / MDS reviews. There’s a good desert running Facebook group that could be useful. I’m seeing Hoka huaka consistently recommended. From Inov8 the new trailfly g300 might be better than the g270s as it’ll fare better on the rocky sections that really cane your feet, even though it’s slightly heavier. Hope that helps! Good luck with your training!
@@wifemotherultrarunner thank you, I just sadly returned the G300s, very confortable but came in well over 300gs per shoe, so felt quite heavy. Yes was also considering the Hoka ATR 6s or maybe the Evo speedgoat, but the speedgoat tread might be overkill for the MDS?
A good review. I have a pair of S/Lab Ultra 3 they are super comfy, a good weight but unfortunately for me a bit too narrow and my feet really get over hot in them, I guess due to the sock liner. I’ll still get some miles out of them but I’ll will be choosing cooler days, not a problem in this country, keep the videos coming.
Great first review, be interesting to see how you get on with them, I was struggling to find something a little more forgiving over longer distance, I previously ran in Saucony peregrine, but found these unforgiving on hard trails, so have gone down the route of the Hoka atr 6 which has fitted the bill nicely.
Yes, I’m due to post a 100mi sum up and I find them sticky on road (so not a road-to-trail shoes), and if anything to soft and splashy on hard packed paths/trails. Feels like it’s better suited to damp/wetter trails, also rocky/scree paths. I was expecting to use them all the time, but I keep reaching for my other trail shoes instead...
They should call it snow running shoes then lol
Nice review .. I am not getting one then..thx
Keep up the good work 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching 🙂. Glad I could help 👍
Just found your channel and enjoyed all your videos, I think you've covered quite a few of the trainers I have/am considering which is really beneficial. I actually bought this shoe but regrettably had to send it back because I found the sizing bizarre. The difference between a 6.5 and a 7 was massive. I actually double and triple checked the sizing because I couldn't believe it. I really wanted to like this shoe too. I like the look of the s/lab you recently reviewed but finding it, like many higher end trainers are a real struggle to find other than on the internet. Great videos, look forward to many more! Running vest reviews would be awesome and I'm looking for a new one. No pressure!
Thanks for watching and the great feedback. I do think that Inov8 dipped in standards over recent years, but I’m hoping with the new move back to independent ownership that things will be back on track. Hopefully you just had a ‘Friday model’ pair that were slightly outsized. It is hard to find in-store options at the moment, but found that Salomon has a good return policy with free returns if that helps... but then you need to pay out and then wait for the refund if you change your mind, which may not financially be an option for everyone. Thanks for the suggestion on a vest video, I’ll add it to my list!!
@@wifemotherultrarunner Yes, maybe. Since watching your video on the Salomon though I've just order the Sense Pro 4 and the Sense Ride 4 as it's so difficult to make a decision. Thanks again
I think you do an outstanding job with reviews on these shoes. Keep cracking on they will come. 👍👊💪
Thank you so much, all feedback - constructive or otherwise - gratefully received 😁! Thanks for watching!
Super usefull video 👍
Great review and comparison. Any thoughts on the new S/LAB Pulsar?
Actually, i haven’t tried the Pulsar, but someone asked the same question in the comments of my other review (ua-cam.com/video/qXGnj_tMXw4/v-deo.html) and another user helpfully commented with their thoughts as they’d tried both pairs back to back. Hope that helps!
Love my Ultra Pros, 100s of miles underfoot, runs up to 30 miles, pretty good in the mud, shiny new pair in the box for when it's time. Took my new Sense Ride 4s out for their first go the other day, my usual light trails daily 10M route, came back almost crippled! Felt like there was absolutely no cushion or shock absorption, just about every part of the foot hurt! First pair of Ultra 3s on order - ordered my usual size 11s like all other Salomons I have, found out I really needed a 10! - but trying them on around the house and OMG they feel so comfortable!!
Thanks for watching! Yup, I love my ultra 3s!!
So Ultra Pro more cushioned, right ? What about fkexibility ?
@@Thefifaplayeryant For me, the Sense Ride 4 just seemed ... flat, like I was running on a piece of cardboard with basically nothing underneath. I had seen reviews and heard others say that they felt more "snappy" than the Ultra Pros, that they were the shoes for the shorter runs, the quicker runs, and that the Ultra Pros were the dependable long run shoes. But, for me, the Sense Ride 4s just didn't work, so I sold them on. The Ultra Pros I'll happily use for both short and longer runs. They don't feel super plush, not cushioned like a Nike ZoomX Invincible or a New Balance 1080, but my feet don't hurt after 30 miles so clearly the cushioning is there and working. Still waiting to give the S/Lab Ultra 3s a go though...they're sitting in the box all ready to go...just need to get them out. I wonder what they'll feel like!
@@seanxkelly so how are you liking the ultra 3? and compared to the sense ride 4 how do they compare?
@@rafael6693 It's been a while since that post so I've got them, ran the lugs off them, and retired them after a few hundred miles total running by now. Personally I found it hard to find a good use case for them. I ran a few 50Ks in them but I didn't think they had the cushioning for too much tarmac whilst at the same time not really having enough grip for too much muddy and slippy stuff. They seemed to fit the light, mixed-trail, dry terrain situation the best, forest roads, tracks, that sort of thing. I personally found the "ultra" in the naming not appropriate for me as my legs were not in good condition at the end of the ultra distances I ran. I basically replaced them with the Ultra Glides which seems to do everything the Ultra 3s did but better. I've ran a couple of 100Ks and a few 50Ks in the Glides and felt much better during and after. I do know a few people though that swear by the Ultra 3s and don't have the same problems as me. I actually rate the Adidas Terrex Speed Ultra as a "better" s/lab ultra 3 to be honest. Similar weight, similar lug size, but better cushion and ride ... but this might be because I'm more a heel striker and that's where the Speed Ultras focus the cushioning.
Very helpful! Would you say the trail shoes are true to size compared to other Brooks shoes?
Yes, I have size 5s in their road shoes and tried a number of trail sizes but the 5s in the trail version were also the best ones for me.
That Merrell is ugly... on the other hand, the Salomon is one of the prettiest, not only in trails but road as well. And it has a lot more to support its looks. But why should it be so expensive?...
Yes, the Merrell isn’t the prettiest of shoes. They do have brighter colour ways, though, and at least the billboard MERRELL detail is reflective detailing, so *some* use. I’d say the s/lab is more expensive because of the materials and the R&D that’s gone into it - it really does feel like a more expensive shoe. Not only is it a great balance of responsive and cushioned, but it’s next level on comfort, in my view. Quite out of the box in its design in terms of how the materials of a shoe are fit around your foot.
Thanks for the video. Very informative comparisons. Any thoughts on comparing S Lab Ultra 3 and Salomon Pulsar?
I‘m not her, but did test the 2 back to back ... quite frankly they are in different ball parks. Apart from the s-lab ultra giving more support, having lower stack hight and the pulsar being freakishly light (318g vs 534g per pair!) and with a softer cushioning ... The Pulsar is designed for forefoot or midfoot running exclusively. If you step on the heel it feels like a negative drop of the shoe, it simply does not work. So for normal human beings it works for shorter and fast races ...
Haven’t tried the Pulsar, but there was an interesting review in the May ‘21 UK Runners World magazine. Seems all but the elite find it quite hard going…
Thoughts and comparisons to the sense 4 pro?
Haven’t tried the sense 4 pro enough to give an honest view, I’m afraid, however on paper the cons are that the Sense 4 pro has a lower drop (4mm vs 8mm), is less suited to heel strikers and has a narrower toe box. On the pros, the Sense pro 4 is lighter, has a water resistant coating and good protection from scrub etc. So, it’s good shoe for fast and light with good protection that rates highly on most reviews (higher than the Sense ride 4, generally), BUT only if you’re happier with a lower drop and narrower toe box (all the shoes in this review are 8mm drop with roomy toe boxes). As I say I haven’t tried it myself enough to give my own opinion, but have canvased shoe info and various reviews for an overview for you - I only give full reviews for shoes I’ve personally tried and compared. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!!
@@wifemotherultrarunner you do a great job so keep up the outstanding work. That helps a lot a I run in Altra at times depending on terrain and was looking for a slightly more aggressive outsole. I really really like the Merrill but having never wore any I’m hesitant, but if the ride is similar to Salomon I have the wild cross for midsole comparison. A softer ride doesn’t scare me off. I’m always keen to try a new and different shoe.
The Merrell feels much more cushioned than the salmon s/lab, and doesn’t work quite so well on road (that vibram grip makes it almost stick to the road). They are two very different shoes. I haven’t tried the wild cross for any considerable miles, so not able to give an accurate comparison, but I find Salomon generally pretty responsive, and I’d guess the Merrell feels much more cushioned (almost spongey) in comparison. That’s just an educated guess, though.
Thanks for the review! Very helpful.
Thank you for the review! Could you please include in your other reviews how much mileage you did in the shoes. Also did you run in mud, dry conditions etc.
Will do in the future, thank you for the advice! This is my initial review after c.20k on a few outings in hard packed trail, woodland and grass road, relatively dry (well, for the UK), nothing too muddy. I plan to do a 100-200k update after I’ve been able to really wear them down on more varied terrain and situations. Thanks for watching!
