A brief intro to Himalayan balsam, an invasive, non-native species that is top of the Eden's Least Wanted list! Taken in May, this shows what the plant looks like when it's growing, before the flowers appear. It's really easy to Stop the Spread of this plant: - Bash the balsam, if you pull the plant it will come out of the ground easily (shallow roots), you can then bash it into submission. See...
The exploding Himalayan balsam seed pod
Переглядів 775 місяців тому
So how do invasive non-native Himalayan balsam plants manage to spread so far? Well, each plant has up to 800 seeds, and in late Summer/early Autumn, the seed pods explode, shooting the seeds up to 7m away! They can float down rivers before lodging in a muddy riverbank ready to overtake a new area. Also easily spread by humans and animals on fur, in grooves of boots and on clothing. Stop the sp...

So, last summer, we re-introduced 365 water voles to the Lake District, working with part...

River restoration and natural flood management programme at Townfoot
Переглядів 8 тис.2 роки тому
In late 2019, we conducted a walkover of Townfoot Farm (near Cumrew) and found a 230m stretch of highly straightened and canalised river between areas of naturally meandering sections of river with woodland cover and in-stream woody debris. Further research of OS maps and LiDAR data showed the old parish boundary in the area as a curving / wiggly line - a good indication of where the river used...

I must say I applaud the effort and intentions, the drone footage does rather give away the fact that this to is a man made course hopefully time and erosion will improve things.

I agree with you about leaky weirs upstream Border Reiver but removing this obstruction aids the migration of fish and the conditions for them to lay their eggs in the gravels formed by a free flowing river

... and what effect did that have on flooding down stream? ... this is a mistaken program ... if anything more weirs (leaky weirs) need to be built all the way up to the watershed to stop catastrophic flooding downstream ... the theory is simple as anyone who understands open channel hydraulics will tell you ...
