A small family farm located in the beautiful Appalachian mountains of western North Carolina. We practice sustainable farming methods and raise some farm livestock. We also produce quality mixed grass/legume's hay and are constantly striving to improve our quality hay production. Our goal is to produce the best quality mixed grass (mostly Orchard) and legume hay in our area. We produce and sell high quality hay in small round bales that average around 45-50# each. We strongly believe in being good stewards of our land and animals.

Our Forested Area is Destroyed
Hodwy folks! Welcome to 8th Day Chronicles! THANKS for stopping by our channel today!
Come along with us as we take a look at a small section of our forested area on our farm property. The destruction that Hurricane Helene did to our wooded property is...well...mind-bogging and akin to bombs going off in a war zone. The majority of any larger timber we had is now on the ground. The heavy rains for days saturated the ground so bad it was very soft and then when Helene's 100+ mph winds and rain arrived, trees didnt break off, they uprooted. This has left not only feet of downed trees and limbs but crater-size holes all over from root balls coming up out of the ground with the trees. YEARS of cleanup to do here. Thanks for stopping by as we get a good start on cleanup / restoration of our wooded area and also discuss how the glass is half-full, not half-empty! May God richly bless you and your family!

Cutting and Tedding the Reclaimed Hay Field
I'm down in Georgia near Statesboro, I had a 100% loss on the 15 acres of 100+ year old pine, red oak and popular. I feel your pain. The rest of my planted pines about 90 acres survived with only about a 20% loss. In total the Georgia department of agriculture estimates the timber loss state wide from Helene at 1.5 million acres
Wow, sorry to hear about your timber loss. Thats tough. Helene showed no mercy. Prayers for you folks.
a apple tree can be pruned back by 1/3 each year , so while it main top stem gone , you now have a more open tree that will push up 4 new top that will in turn push out 4 new branches , keep the inner new growth trimmed off and only leave out reaching branches that do not cross another branch , good rule of thumb is to prune back angled cut to just before a branch intersection each time , which is what happened to your top , clean up the tare and cover with pruning compound for it is more water resistant, and protect against rot and decease getting in , the tree may stunt grow for a year where there little out growth , yet the added light may over shadow any stunting that may occurs .🥸🤓,Canada
Thats great info! Thanks a bundle for sharing that!
we are using the baler for pine straw. the bales keep coming out at 55 pounds per roll. I have tried adjusting it to every density setting and nothing is working to lighten them. any thoughts? thank you
Ive never baled pine straw so I have no idea. Ask Steve Carver at Carver Equipment, I think he sells several of these balers to pine straw customers. If he dont know the answer he can maybe put you in contact with someone who bales pine straw also. Hope that helps some.
@ will reach out. Thank you
So sorry for what you are having to go through, such an enormous loss. As a farmer, and forest owner, I have a huge amount of empathy for all that you are facing. On another note, please protect your head, your hearing, and your legs. Chainsaws are the most dangerous machines ever invented by man and they can hurt you real bad, real fast. You sure don't need an accident on top of all else you are dealing with.
@@davidlillie4332 Thank you Sir. Good advice. Much appreciated.
Blessed indeed brother. Hard work ahead, for a while it seems. I love your attitude and willingness to share. Amazing these days. Sally and I will continue praying. Warms my heart to see God's spirit in motion.
Thanks Tom! God bless you and Mrs. Sally!
Thank you for sharing this video! I never thought about how much hay could be caught up under the door skin! I'll be checking mine this weekend.
You’re very welcome! A few years ago, the first time I ever took the cover off I was shocked at the trapped hay under there.
@@8thdaychronicles I'm surprised they don't make it easier to clean out. I would think all that dry hay getting packed in there could start on fire from the friction of the rollers.
@@Gilikemail The trapped hay/chaff comes out very easy….once you get the covers off! Taking the door cover off and then reinstalling is the problem. Thanks a bundle for watching!
We have cleaned our equipment also. I have not noticed the same issue with getting the covers off, I'll check next time I am at the farm. Our balers are very similar on the inside, but the skin is different. We do love our gathering wheels for sure. I learned to weld 40 years ago, worth the time for sure. A small welder is less than $300 and can fix a bunch of fame issues. I use a wire-feed welder more than stick, but stick is better. These balers are worth the time and money I think, ours works great. Good video bud, looking forward to next year.
It would be interesting to know if the Ibex baler has the same “tabs” on the rear frame to hold the back side of the side covers in place. Poor design on this baler. I have welded with a stick welder just enough to see I don’t know what I’m doing. That’s one valuable skill I never learned, and I wish I had now.. God bless you guys at Chigger Hill Adventures!
@@8thdaychronicles I will look next time I am up at the farm. I don't remember them being there, but as Sally says, "sometimes I remember things that didn't happen yet".
@@tommywise1702 hahahaha….thats a good one Mrs Sally! I can relate!
I also leave the bale door raised and both the side doors open to keep the wasp/dirt dobbers and mice/rats from building nest. I have the capability to leave my hooked to my tractor and can actually run my baler throughout the winter ever month to keep the critters out.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing that great tip! Much appreciated.
It’s always tough to make hay in the fall. Up here in the mountains of SW PA we are done in September with hay. Good luck and God bless you and your family.
Thanks a bunch! This is the latest in the year we have ever made hay, its been tough. I'll probably never make hay this late in the year again. God bless you and family also!
Good video, looks like great hay. The community spirit is self evident, nice job. We have a few trees that have to go before spring (if possible) for the same reason. Leaves are everywhere in one field. I am checking with the County Extension Office to find a farm that could use a little extra hay. We have about 50 to donate. Hay Season 2024 stopped for us on October 25th. Hay Season 2025 started October 26th with 14 ton of lime. Never really stopped. Good times! Nice to see Susan (shadow) again 😊. Have a good day bud, see ya on the next one.
Yes....hay season never "really" ends. Always something to do to continue to improve. Good for you guys, looking to help take care of another farmer too! Thats fantastic. I cant seem to get Susan in front of the camera much...shes much easier to look at than me. God bless you and Mrs Sally!
Sir,, watching and learning from you, I’m very grateful. I have an important question, I want to purchase the small round baler like yours and received a quote from the company you preferred me to, excellent price and I thank you for your help. But my question,,, is there a good market for the mini round bales? How do you sell yours? A friend suggested I may not be able to sell them here in Lovelady Texas. Any ideas/advice/suggestions would be appreciated because I can’t afford a new large round baler and been told it’s not a good idea to purchase a used one. Thank you for all your help and your time,,, maybe a video about the business end of hay baling for a small farm???
Hello! Thanks for the kind words! In my area, the 2x2 round bale market is VERY good. We have a couple regular customers that buy every bale we can make. Once you show folks how to feed them, especially using the barrel feeder build we made (we have a video on it in the playlists), they love them. I have YET to have a customer tell me they prefer the standard small square bale over the 2x2 round bale. We actually have several videos on our channel about hay market prices and operating a small family hay farm. Just go to our channel home page and start looking thru our "small scale hay equipment" playlists among other playlists. Several videos there addressing much of your questions. Thanks for watching, I sure appreciate it!
@ yes sir I will search for them and learn,, thank you!
Sally and I need to purchase a tedder for sure. They are not common in Arkansas, the sun is hot and constant here during hay season most years. Priced at about half the cost of the baker makes it hard to open the wallet. Love the community commitment from y'all, another positive .and informative video. Keep up the good work, still praying for strength and patience for the wider area. I know the nerves have to be thin.
Thanks, Tom. Our area, humidity, dew points and amounts, elevation dictating heat, etc, often our tedder is one of the most important pieces of equipment we own. I do know some people in this area who have made hay for years and never owned a tedder. We didnt for a while, but once we started using one for premium quality hay making, I saw the value in it pretty quickly. Our drum mower leaves fresh-cut hay in a narrow swath and getting that hay spread out into the sunlight as soon as possible reaps big benefits for both better dry-down and the quality of the hay (higher sugars/starch levels retained. We bought our Rhino PT207 tedder used for less than half the price of a new one. New they average $2500-2000, we found this one in great condition for $800. At the time our farm budget just didnt allow for a new one, and this one has proven to be just as good as new. THANK YOU both for the continued prayers for this area and communities. Many places are still in bad shape. The major news media's coverage dont tell much of how bad it really was and still is.
Looks like the new meter is working good. 14% seems really dry and should be just perfect for horses. Short hay sure is a challenge, looks like you done a great job getting it bales. Especially in challenging times. Short hay never make the quantity it looks like for some reason. Sally and I will continue praying, another good video.
Thank you Sir. Much appreciated! This was the latest in the year I’ve ever made hay and lesson learned to NOT make hay this late in the year again. Main reason we even cut this late was to donate some hay to some folks in need. I’d do it again for that reason only, but just to schedule it this late on a “normal” year again, no way. The heavy dews and lack of drying temps and short growth made for a tough time with this hay. Our best to you and Mrs Sally.
Nothing fun about short hay. It is hard to rake without leaving a bunch and our baler doesn't pick it up very well. Leaves a lot on the ground. Good job bud, nice to see ya succeeded.
Bingo! Short hay is a headache all the way around. From cutting to baling it is tougher to deal with. The Redlands / Farm Maxx baler did a decent job, better than I anticipated, picking it up to bale. Often short hay wants to tumble along in front of the pickup teeth too bad. Pray you and Mrs Sally have a great weekend!
Prayers for continued healing and restoration for your community. So glad that y'all are well. Y'all are special to us. We seem to have lots in common including a strong faith. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Ma”am. Your prayers for communities here are sure appreciated! God bless you guys!
Another good job, bud. Looks like a few horses will get a treat this winter. Still praying for y'all and the community. Hope things are moving forward. Thanks for the kind words. We feel a connection with your community through your videos and positive messages. We look forward to every video. Love y'all too. God is good indeed.
Thank you! Ive had a chainsaw in my hands almost daily for weeks now. I've got enough timber down to keep me busy for at least a year. Plenty of campfire wood! Some areas are still in bad shape and will be for a long time, other areas recovering much faster. Anywhere along bodies of water (larger creeks and rivers), the devastation was MUCH worse. You guys are great! Thanks so much!
I think this is the prettiest breed. Do I have a chance of finding small adult oberhaslis? I saw one adult and she was rather large, too large for me. I need as a pet and a companion to my other (mixed) goat.
Yes there are some “mini” Oberhaslis out there. They are probably not true Oberhaslis but if that’s what you’re looking for there are people that cross them with small breeds
@ Oh great, I need a silent goat.
Constant prayers for ya! Press On.
Thank you!
Looking good. As they say, "got to make hay while the sun shines". Sounds like a solid plan, good to see ya again. Still praying for you, Susan, and the community.
Thank you much! It’s good to be back, just a wee-bit of “normalcy”. Prayers for our communities MUCH appreciated!
😊I greet you from Ukraine😊
Thanks a bunch!
Nice work 👏 It's amazing to me how different things looks down your way compared to up here in Kentucky. Our hay fields have been done for a while and most of the trees leaves have changed colors.
Thanks Jason. We didn’t get much fall color this year, the hurricane winds took off most of the leaves.
You are a fine Christian man. God bless you and your family.
Thank you for your kindness. Much appreciated!
When you cut with the drum mower is all the weight of the mower sitting on the ground? If so, did you have to adjust the break away spring tighter?
Yes Sir. Both skid plates sit flat on the ground. That’s why it’s quite important to take the time to level out the drum mower proper. I have my break-away bar set just a few turns tighter than it was at the factory position and seems to work great.
@ I haven’t actually used mine yet but have tried it out. When I had both drums sitting completely on the ground and drove forward the break away engaged. I did tighten the spring after that and it seemed to help. Thanks for the reply
@@christopherpyle3503 you’re very welcome!

@@robertstewart5838 Thank you Sir! You’re much appreciated. I pray your area is surviving ok also

@@tommywise1702 Thanks Tom and Mrs Sally. Y’all are fantastic. Many, many very sad scenes to see in the area. We were SOOOO blessed compared to many here. Continued prayers appreciated!
Blessings to you all and the mountain folks of western NC from Central Oregon. You have been in our concerns and prayers since that faith test event came through. We are comforted by this video to know you’re ok, even though it’s going to be a long recovery under trying circumstances. You and your family are appreciated, and showered in prayers. In faith for our Christ, Ron & Cristi
Thank you, Ron and Cristi! God bless you all!
I'm thinking about baling about 10 acres from the farm, convert part of the pasture with lime and a no till drill. Not being nosey but how much do the small round bales sell for? Trying to decide between those, regular small squares or 4x4s .thanks
Many times price for hay is regional and quality-specific. You should be able to see these 2x2 round bales of like-quality hay for 2-3 more than a standard small square bale. Hope that helps!
It's truly sad what y'all have been going through. Even more sad our government's response. Glad you're still around to talk about it. I can't imagine the loss that people are dealing with down there.
Thanks, Jason. You’re right on all counts. One org that has been VERY active in helping people is Samaritians Purse. Wow, they have done an excellent job here. God bless you!
Thanks bud. What an example of American values you have spoken about. Sally and I are praying for y'all.

Sir, may I ask where you bought your cutter, rake and hay baler from? If you have covered this before please forgive me. I need to purchase one very soon ,, thank you for your help and your time
Hey, thanks for watching! We purchased our drum mower and hay baler from Carver Equipment out of Dunn, NC. We purchased our Grizzly in-line hay rake from Agri-Supply. Hope that helps, and welcome to our channel, we appreciate it!
Thanks for video! On Drum Mower is that tractor hp or pto hp?
@@jacklowe3788 On my Kubota tractor engine hp is 32, PTO is 27. Specs on hp to run implements should be PTO power I would assume.
Those Forks are so heavy I need a forklift to lift the forks off my forklift !!!
lol……
I have a mini round baler, but I like your attachment to the Tractor. Could you give me a sketch or several pictures of it? I'd like to reproduce it.
We have a very detailed video in our playlist that shows measurements, all that stuff. Go to our small-scale hay equipment playlist, it’s there. Thanks a bundle!
What do you do with the issue of the twine coming off/ unrolling a bit from the bale when ejected. Usually its not to bad, but loading and unloading a couple of times and you get 4-6ft dangling.
When I am gathering bales from the field when done baling, I grab the loose end, give it a hard pull to tighten it, tuck it under the twine wrap beside it a couple times. Makes for nice, tight wrap.
What size are they and how much do they weigh?
2x2 basically and between 45-50#
How many watt solar panel for your set up
I think it is a 50, I’ll check later to be sure
I like how you give credit to others who you got ideas from, I subscribed.

Sir, may ask how much land do you feel is too much for that size baler? I have 10 acres and must purchase equipment and cannot afford a large baler. Forgive me if you have covered this, Jesus just lead me to your channel. Thank you for your help and your time
Thanks for the kind comment! Your question is tough to answer, it’s so dependent on if you have limited time, etc, as there are not “fast acreage” balers. I think 10 acres is very doable. I do about 7 acres quite easily. Thanks for dropping by, we sure appreciate it!

Good evening, hate to bother you again but just wandering how the 130 knot strength poly twine is working out? I may have missed your comments on the new twine? I am using the 190 sisle twine at the moment but mostly just curious for sure on your thought?
It’s fantastic. I’ve talked about it some on our latest videos. Thanks for asking!
Have you had to change out the knife yet and if so what did you replace it with?? I haven't looked at mine close yet but probably going to need replaced or sharpened.
No I haven’t but I’ve noticed the last couple uses it’s getting dull. Mine appears to be a regular utility knife blade and should be easy to change out. That being said I haven’t changed it yet, so maybe not as simple as it seems? Soon to find out
After watching your videos I purchased a Farm Maxx baler. I added a box to house the baling twine on mine. If you give me your email, I will send you some pic's.
Our email address is on our “about” tab of the home page. I’d enjoy seeing the pictures!
