Cyclist Tom
Приєднався 18 лют 2015
I believe very strongly in cycling as a means of transport, and a way of keeping fit. I decided to upload videos of bad driving mainly to:
- name and shame the drivers
- educate fellow cyclists
- show drivers who don't cycle what it's like from a cyclist's point of view
I've also designed a close pass detector, and I've published a DIY guide for building one: sites.google.com/view/close-pass-detector

Both did a very well to avoiding escalation. Good job Australia 👍
Ah an apology can go a long way. Gotta watch it though. Apologies can't fix broken necks
report them to the police. these buffoons are causing significant risk of harm to society. go to criminal court as the plaintiff with prosecutors backing you up.
That looked pretty mellow for Sydney. I totally gave up on cycling in Sydney, despite almost 40yrs of cycling love, raised in a cycle friendly EU country. SYD was just too dangerous, I got run off the road 3 times before I'd had enough. The gutter! The last time I got run off the road I was cycling through Kurnell, 40 zone, with 3 cars following me no problem. The 4th however, with cars parked both sides of the street, overtook all 3 cars in front of him and cut me off with cm's to spare. Got out of his ute to abuse me and when I asked him where I should ride instead, he pointed to and told me "in the gutter". Never got on a bike again in SYD after that. Moved to WA 2.5 yrs ago, started venturing out again, bit by bit, building up confidence. I'm now riding again 5 days a week, traffic here is so much better than Sydney.
I see Camry's completely forgetting about blindspots is not a uniquely Melbourne thing then 🙄
First clip I lived on that road there for 5 years. Everyone sped and would honk at people turning into their driveways.
I see shithead drivers exist in all hemispheres lol stay safe out there
As a cyclist myself, 0:05 was normal. In non-cyclist friendly countries, cycling is not for the weak of heart.
if by "perfectly fine" you mean illegal and dangerous driving, then we agree.
WOW
To be fair, at 34 seconds you could have been riding in the separated bike lane
could, but this is not mendatory and maybe he is turning right next turn so this would have been stupid, or maybe the bikelane is dangerous because of building entrances where people do not care about bikelane and just cross them without looking first.
that bike lane lasts less than 100m, doesn't end up going where I want to go (right at the next roundabout) and as seen in 01:10 is often more dangerous. So thanks but no thanks ;)
I’m you 100 subscriber 🎉
Im you 101 subscriber tom!
Totally relate that as a fellow cyclist. Reckless driving, everyday. As I saw in the video as well, often in the same places too
Guy w the E board, he doesn't have to work and the dogs work, they want to keep up with master even if it kills them. IDIOT.
oi oi mate watch yu doin''
this is just normal in Annapolis, Maryland. we ride on the right of course. closest call I had was when I was making a left and someone decided to pass me at the same time. birds were flying
I love your crying
it's funny aussies are so backwards htey absolutely HATE cyclists like it's the 1950s lmao cringe
omg those drivers are insane!
just idiot biker...slow down..bus is big and could stop immediately. absolutely idiot.
You cyclists are pricks, as it is stated by NSW RMS, cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicles, but you all just want the rights and not the responsibilities. Motor vehicles have to leave a 1 metre space from cyclists, but you were clearly hogging the road riding to the right preventing the bus from leaving a 1 metre space, and it’s something I see you cyclists do all the time. Your on a bicycle for fucks sake to don’t need the entire lane keep to the left to allow traffic to get past you, time to accept the responsibilities and to stop being whiny little shits.
But you were in the bus lane… I’m sorry, what were expecting if not this??
Sydney is tough and I know everyone of those streets intimately. Gotta say I don’t ride any of them very much any more. As you know route-selection is 90% of the game if you want to stay alive. The simple freedom to just belt directly down Elizabeth St is something I no longer even consider.
Good to have you back Tom. Stay safe mate.👍
Awsome keep uploading would like to watch more such videos again
Great video, looking forward to seeing more uploads! I think you should check SMZeus . c o m to grow your channel!
0:31 You should have waited for the pedestrians to finish crossing the rd before turning left. They have right of way when the pedestrian crossing is green, regardless if the traffic has a green light.
So cars can pass me at 50 km/h with 1m to spare but i can't do the same to a pedestrian at walking pace?
@@cyclisttom8487 Um, they can as that's the law as it stands. Saying that what you did was ok because you did it slowly is the same justification some car drivers use to pass you in tight spaces. "Oh, it's ok. We were only going 20k's." Plus, you're complaining about a pedestrian doing the same thing to you at 3:37. You can't have it both ways. Either both are wrong or neither. (Both are.)
Haha the fact that cars can pass me legally with 1m to spare is my point! Compare the danger of that to what i did with the pedestrian. I gave way to him. You think i was too close, but at walking pace i disagree. Agree to disagree?
@@cyclisttom8487 You didn't give way. You passed through the intersection while the pedestrians had the green light. That's illegal. You should have stayed behind the line until they finished crossing the road. It's not open to interpretation. If you had been seen doing that by a cop, you would have been liable for it. The 1 metre rule is also in law. Regardless of whether it is safe enough, that's the law but I wasn't talking about that or making any comparisons, as that's a whole other debate. What you did was wrong and has nothing to do with the 1 metre rule or the speed at which you did it.
Sydney is full of way too many fuckwits, in fact I’m leaving Sydney too many arseholes and fuckwits
Wow do you have a death wish or something? Riding in Sydney on a push bike is a death sentence.
Good video. Spread the awareness.
also those last two. Total morons
Firstly, the bus had to move because he/she would've been stuck in the middle of the intersection, and traffic to his left and right would be backed up if their lights turned green. You'll notice another bus (a long bendy one) directly in front of the merging bus that is halted. The bus driver had no choice but to merge lanes to avoid potential traffic build up. Secondly, the bus driver indicated that they wanted to move, in advance. Now whether you like it or not, you, as a cyclist, do NOT have the right of way. When a bus indicates, and you are a fair distance behind it, and you were, You give way. If you had paid attention to your surrounding vehicles, braking wouldn't be an issue, even in the wet (I've rode bikes during a torrential downpour before many times. It around three seconds to brake unless you weren't applying the brakes fully, or if you were pedalling too fast, like you were in this instance). Thirdly, look at how many buses are in your surroundings. Do you honestly expect every bus to remain in the "Bus Lane" during peak hour in Sydney? They are on tight schedules, and have timetables to follow. They don't have time wait for some arrogant cyclist to move, and then hold up traffic because they can't go the speed limit. Again, they have the right of way, NOT you. If there was no need for the bus to merge but the bus driver did anyway, cutting you off, then I'd be on your defence, as that would be a stupid thing to do. However, there was a reason for the bus to merge lanes and there was no reason for you to race up to the bus, especially when they have the right of way. I don't feel sorry at all for you here. I'm just glad you didn't race further, as the bus would've cleaned you up (I'd feel sorry for the bus driver in that instance).
The light was still green so there was no reason for the bus to rush the lane change. And he only indicated for 2s before moving. You might think that's enough time, but I definitely don't; i' reckon it should be 3s minimum. Also, are you really saying I'm riding too fast? I'm going 30-40 km/h...In any case I'm glad you watched just this clip and not one of my compilations or you would've written a book about it :P
No, there was a reason for him to change. Even though the light was green at the time, if the light turned orange then red, and he/she didn't move from that position, there would've been a build up of traffic, which is what I said; "the bus had to move because he/she would've been stuck in the middle of the intersection, and traffic to his left and right would be backed up *if* their lights turned green" And that is still quite a bit of time for you to slow down. If he was overtaking a car like that, then it'd be a different story, but a bike doesn't take much to brake (I would know, as I own one, and use it frequently, just like you). And yes, in that case you are going fast. It may only be 30-40 kph, but you are trying to race the bus when you knew that he was going to move. As I said, there was a bendy bus in front of it that was stationary. The driver of the bus in question had no choice but to merge lanes (see paragraph one). It should've been common sense for you to slow down. Even a motorist would've done the same thing. And as for not seeing your other video's, I was shown this one by a friend.
"My speed is faster" ffs.
#6 - 1:05 - silly cyclist 2017-04-04 - Unidentified I am also guilty of being easily distracted by cats.
Bloody taxis and buses
you shouldn't be in the bus lane should you
Jared Besant cyclists can use Sydney bus lanes, as well as taxis, hire cars, motorbikes, emergency vehicles and buses ;)
Seriously? For the sake of your cycling you want the bus driver to be late to his meal brake and not even have 40 minutes for a 9 hour day ? And for the comfort of your ass you want at least 30 people to be late to their destinations? C’mon mate think about others too . What is this only me only me mentality?
@Don't Sacrifice Yoshis the natural gas powered buses take 7 seconds to reach up to 40km/h and don't forget they are 12.5 metres long. The red bendy buses are 18 metres long and yes they are faster however they have to remain in the same lane until the entire body of the bus cleared . İt's not half a metre long like the bicycles. İf the driver switches lanes before clearing it the rider would get sandwiched in no time . I drive on oxford street and not only riders don't want to give me way they also try racing me . When l get to st Vincent's Hospital there is a bus only lane that allows buses to go thru the traffic lights prior to green light so guess what ? The cyclists stop at bus only lane and block buses when the bus gets the B light then what happens ? Bus driver gets pissed off beeps or speeds up . İnnocent cyclists and bloody bus drivers . I am telling you mate . Just relax and give them enough room . Don't forget nothing happens to them but you would get hurt in a split second
cylists can use bus lane? nut or too much weed.
So I read on your website that the police rejected your request to have the driver that passed you at 58cm fined. But have any other incidents (not exactly close passes but any dangerous/reckless driving) that you have recorded on camera been passed on to police and if so was what was the outcome? also whens the next vid. I regularly ride around the some of the same areas as you and enjoy watches these videos. Entertaining and good to keep an eye out for poor driving.
If you're thinking of reporting drivers to the Police, feel free to have a go, but don't get your hopes up. A surprisingly common response will be that if they didn't see it, they can't do anything about... Think about that...so what they've never charged anyone for a crime using CCTV footage? The way NSW Police deal with cyclists is dissappointing. If they really cared about us, they'd stop fining us for riding on the footpath, or riding without a bell, and get on bikes themselves. They could filter through slow moving traffic and catch drivers texting on their phones. They could even ride with a close pass detector and enforce the minimum passing distance. Next video? Maybe sometime over the next week; I've got ~20 recorded incidents waiting on me. I'm glad you like them!
I live outside Sydney, in suburban sprawl, I see the same behaviour, just less of it. I basically cycle like everyone is set out to kill me. Ive made some mistakes in the past which has made me a safer cyclist on the road. Depending on how stupid someone has been is when I tend to get angry and voice my frustration out to people, i don’t really suffer fools lightly, especially when they get so close i think im going to get knocked off its frightening so i can understand this. Over the time ive learned to take some of it under the chin and carry on calm and collected because sometimes its more important to keep your cool than carry on cycling in an angry mood that can be dangerous to yourself. I particularly hate it when I get yelled at to get on the footpath, because the driver is so ignorant to the road rules, i will only get on the footpath if its a shared path, otherwise, Im not going to break the law because some peer pressure from idiots. Anyway, his was interesting to watch, thank you 😊 🙏
Artemis 2112 good on you for cycling in the burbs. So many people just drive everywhere...I absolutely agree with what you say about handling bad drivers and abuse. Don't let it get to you, and don't let it affect your riding, unless it means riding more defensively. I find shouting as well as braking a valid approach. It lets drivers who hadn't seen you know you're there, and I find it can be quite cathartic ;) ride safe
Cyclist Tom Exactly tom, couldn’t have said it better myself
So good. Keep these videos coming. I always get risky passes just for the car to get stuck in traffic within next 50m!
Cycling in Adelaide can be just as dangerous as anywhere else - especially where there are roadworks or holes bordered off by flags or cones and flashing lamps. Vehicles suddenly pulling out without warning, or holes in the road pose a problem for riders. When I ride (which is not often) I don't mount the footpath - I've seen other cyclists get pulled up and fined for it by police (as well as some riding without a helmet when they should wear one). There are occasions where some cyclists have their helmet strapped to the handlebars; e.g. on a hot day, and cops may simply stop and tell them to wear it on their head with no further action taken. For this reason, I always wear a helmet on my head if and when I go riding. Stay safe and happy biking.
I think there should be more education on driving amongst cyclists when people go for their licence so that people understand the law. So many vehicle drivers don't know the law regarding sharing the road with cyclists.

Bloody magpies! They always sneak up and scare the shit outa me. The bad inconsiderate drivers are even worse. I think there should be more education on driving amongst cyclists so that people understand the law. So many vehicle drivers don't know the law regarding sharing the road with cyclists.
You're a good cyclist. Like you I ride to the left to allow other vehicles to easily over take, but then sometimes they seem to force you further into the gutter. then there's the alternative where by law we can ride in the middle of the lane and force traffic to over take passing in the other lane. this makes many start road raging. Cyclists in many cases just can't win, even when they follow the law. This is why I avoid busy roads. too many impatient drivers.
I get so damn annoyed at those motorist who whinge about cyclist been in the middle of the lane but happily park their motor vehicles where they expect you to ride. Nothing will change until better cycling infrastructure is built.
NBSOOV takes the dickhead award in this video for me.But others are fighting for that title.Cycle safe man.
Burwood Rd has to have the biggest dickheads in Sydney. Stay safe out there, Tom.
Always amazes me how the shit standard of driving around cyclists stretches all over the world......!
