DIY Roll-Up Garage Golf Simulator
Welcome to Chuck Builds! In this video I go into excruciating detail about each component of my budget, DIY garage golf Simulator. For about $1400, I was able to build an extremely budget friendly - yet mostly full featured golf simulator. I do a high-level walk through at the beginning of this video before diving into more detail in chapters. This is my longest video to date and was brutal for me to edit, but I didn't want to split this video into a playlist. I apologize for the rambling detail and loose connection between thought processes. This sim could be reduced further for extreme cost savings but ultimately this is where I ended up and what has been really fun and very playable. Again, this is far from perfect, but I have had a blast using it! Embrace the Wrinkles!

Cheap and Easy Raised Garden Bed Project
Переглядів 4903 місяці тому
My girlfriend wanted a raised garden bed and I didn't want to pay $300 for one online, so naturally I spent $300 and built it myself. I ended up making a second one for this video and recording it with some slight changes to the design but overall I am very happy with them. I feel they were pretty cost effective, straight forward, and not too challening to make. I am trying to dip my toes into ...

How to Shuck External Hard Drives (Cheaper NAS Storage Disks!)

Hard drives can be expensive, especially if you are using a LOT of storage for all of your devices and services. Shucking an external hard drive can be a great way to save some cash and still get a NEW (not renewed) hard drive into your system for a little extra work. amazing video a lot of information, do you now how can i do this in a ubuntu server?
just run docker or portainer
I already have it running just wanted to transfer my google photos but I don’t know how to use the Immich go
@@ChuckBuilds i follow everything in your video but when i run the command all it does is give me this error the image file C:\user\xx\Desktop\immich go\immich-go.exe is valid, but is for a machine type other than the current machine
you dont need ubuntu
Hi I don’t seem to have a UEFI boot list option can someone help me find how and what settings I need to change
Have you tried it? It might be on by default. Otherwise, if there is no option, you probably can't force it. It would need to be supported by the motherboard.
@@ChuckBuilds is there a way I can send you pictures of the bios settings I have
I have the same pc but without WiFi is it required to use it as home assistant or can I can it in Ethernet ?
Ethernet is preferred! You do not need wifi.
@@ChuckBuilds but how will the home assistant interact with the existing WiFi device I have ?
Hi chuck. Thank you so much for the video! I have successfully boot HA into the ssd. However when I restarted the laptop it keeps giving the message:"' No bootable device''. I'm using quite an old laptop Hp Presario cq56 with intell celeron. Not sure how to fix this
So I just restored the home assistant os on my hard drive from Ubuntu, and now, the computer is stuck in its loading screen” protected by hp sure start”. I couldn’t find the place to disable safe boot, or uefi. Could you help?
Unplug the PC and look for your CMOS Battery. Pull it out and it’ll reset your BIOS. Try to get into BIOS again to turn it off
Thanks for this Chuck, did my setup this evening and went perfect, just as shown. Great work and underrated channel!
So I am picking up my micro PC tomorrow and starting my HA journey this weekend, this video was recommended from a friend and man am I glad he did, such a straightforward and concise directions - Will check out the updated video now as I see you mention Balena is no longer the way to go - I assume we can just mount the .iso file now. Thanks Chuck!
thanks so much for this video worked a treat!
Will this work on the LJ8900W?
Absolutely deserves the like and subscribe, I ran into a TON of issues along the way but persevered and your videos got me through the important parts. Thanks so much!
Just put these on all 9 of my MRCOOL units. Bought a key filing kit at the hardware store for $10 and was able to file down the edges pretty quickly.
impressive number of units! Hope you can get them all automated nicely! Good advice on key filing kit!
@@ChuckBuilds Funny, I had JUST finished them up about an hour before I got the notification of your reply! They work beautifully. The hardest part was getting family members to decide on schedules.
Thanks for the clear instructions !! I managed to install Home Assistant to my HP T630. Now let's see if I manage to link my complete home to Home Assistant.
It doesn't work on my phone. Only works on desktop or laptop 😮
Could you share the time it took for the second command (without dry run) to run? We can get an estimate of 100gb-150gb photo upload. I understand that thumbnail and post-processing will take a separate time.
It took like 15 minutes to run when checking the non-cut recording. Depends on your internet speed, disk speed, and destination. Shouldn't take too long though
I managed to install HA using method 1 but using rufus instead of balena. I used balena at first try and it didn't boot up HA Thank you for the instructions!
Glad you were able to fix it! Thanks for letting me know!
I have Immich running on my unraid server. When setting up Immich, I created separate directories for each of my family members for our google photos that I have downloaded from takeout. My question is, is it possible to when using immich-go to upload the google photos albums, photos and video into specific directories instead of having all the photos in the import default location? I have mapped the Path:/import to /mnt/user/Media/GooglePhotos/ where there are 4 folders, one for each of our family members. The other Path:/photos is mapped to /mnt/user/Media/ImmichPhotos and that only has library which was default. When we login and start uploading photos from our mobile devices, will Immich create a folder for each user? Thanks.
That's an interesting use-case! I honestly am not sure how to accomplish that, I would suggest checking the immich github and support channels on that
When I plug the USB jumper in nothing happens - the SSD is not detected.
What SSD are you using? And you're using an Argon case correct?
@@ChuckBuilds That's right and a Ediloca EN206
@@ChuckBuilds Addendum - I think the USB bridge was bad. I have it working with a separate USB to USB cable.
This adapter is called "assholes going out of their way to make proprietary connectors". Im honestly surprised that they didnt make it harder.
lol, I was thinking exactly the same thing
What is the advantage of self-hosting? I just want to find something better than GP which is just to have folders instead of just albums. Want to be able to MOVE files between folders.
The advantage is you have control of your photos and data, no additional fees, and aren't reliant on a 3rd party company. The disadvantage is that it's in active development and will have the occasional issue or you might not be able to get 100% uptime
How’s the battery after all this time? My wall button shows the battery is constantly charging? Will the battery eventually die?
Mine has been fine so far. The battery could eventually die but it is a cheap 12v lead acid battery - cheap and easy to replace.
@@ChuckBuilds my wall button finally shows full bars. Also to note, you don’t need to cut the door. You can fish it around the back, there’s an opening. Found it when installing.
I use a 1 tb external drive for Linux systems all the time never had an issue booting from it.
That wouldn't be an issue. The common Issue I see is Micro-SD Cards or Flash-drives dying from sustained high IO commonly due to the logs
Can you tell me what max or average power you have got on dell. I am planning to buy a dell micro 3020 to use for my hobby like running homelab os like casa os and doing experiments. Could you also advise me what processor will be efficient for it to draw less power even if in load with good performance . I choose dell 3020 micro because it is in my budget and I also thought that being ddr3 and gen4 , it will consume less power. Please share you thoughts.
Something with less cores would be a good rule of thumb but you would need to check comparisons of specific generations of processors to make a decision. This is a 3050 i3-7100T. The power didn't fluctuate much while running HomeAssistant. Wish I could help more!
can you flash it with a mac or does it require a pc?
I would think it would work fine! I don't have a mac to test it but I can't find anything that says otherwise.
@@ChuckBuilds thanks!
Amazing video! I am having a little issue, the pc I got is pretty low end and it is pretty slow, I got stuck at the "please remove the installation medium". I removed it and pressed enter, but it keeps on displaying that message and the little loading symbol
If you still need help, join my discord and I'll try to help you out!
Great video. Thank you. I already have HA running as a VM in VirtualBox on a Windows 10 PC. After completing the steps in your video, how do I get my existing HA onto the new machine? Is it just a simple matter of moving it by restoring a backup?
Yep! Just restore a backup! That's the beauty of running HomeAssistant as an OS, it has everything in one spot! I've got a video about scheduling backups and I do a restore in that video: ua-cam.com/video/At5LaQtbuFM/v-deo.htmlsi=d4ki46Bsc3U8yqJ3
It is asking me to put in a URL when i try to add Z-Wave at 3:10
Was working fine until I tried the OTA update with the .bin file. Now it just keeps timing out and won't connect to my network properly. Now it's not even broadcasting its own wifi.
I'm sorry to hear that. I had contacted them previously when I wanted to reset my device to record this video and received this response: "Currently, the device does not have a factory reset. To start the AP again, first turn off the device and your router, then turn on the dongle and wait about a minute for it to start the AP. After that, you can connect to the dongle and configure Wi-Fi again." - It seems the device will not broadcast it's SSID if it still detects your home WiFi signal, I would see if you can attempt this and if it still doesn't work, I recommend reaching out to Smartlight and ask if they have a suggestion. They were very friendly and quick to respond.
@@ChuckBuilds I purchased a few of them and was able to get one to work. The others keep timing out. Thanks for the advice. I already reached out to them. I'll also try disconnecting my wifi and hopefully it will try rebroadcasting its own ssid. I assumed the button was a factory reset, but I guess not.
@@ChuckBuilds I turned off the wifi network, but only one module started broadcasting. I'm assuming it was the functional one and didn't want to mess with it. I tried connecting the module to my computer to reset it, but it was not recognized. Not sure what else I can do.
Kind of in the same boat. I have multiple ACs. 1st one worked perfect. 2nd one connected to HA but unable to control the actual unit. It sort of times out. Don’t know what to do!
@@jonathancastaneda5560 Yeah. I gave up on it. Literally the same model indoor units. No matter what I do I can't get one of them to work. It connects to my WIFI and when I type in its IP address I see everything clearly. When I input a command it just times out and keeps retrying. Customer support wasn't able to help me find a solution.
Seriously thinking about this install. Currently running on a Lenovo ThinkCentre i5 Windows 10 VirtualBox VM. I want to get away from Windows 10 for obvious reasons. My question; I would like to install a larger SSD with no operating system, will your method work under this scenario installing Linux in the process or do i just install Linux to start. Cheers
You could totally upgrade your SSD at the same time. You could install the blank SSD and follow this video exactly, OR you could follow the instructions in my "Method 2" video where you can install it straight to the SSD before installing it to the machine. I'm here if you need help!
@@ChuckBuilds excellent, I have two of these Lenovo's with the second being a back up. Will try on the backup first. Thanks.
@@drumslapper That sounds like a good opportunity to try a High Availability Proxmox Cluster! You can run the HAOS as a VM (way better than virtual box) and ensure your home assistant doesn't go down as long as one of the two clusters is online. Might give you some more flexibility with docker containers and functions than dedicating two whole machines to just Home Assistant.

I followed all the steps using Ubuntu with a Dell OptiPlex 3050 i3-7100T 3.4GHz 16GB 240GB SSD to get stuck after "Waiting for the Home Assistant CLI to be ready…” with “[WARN] Home Assistant CLI not starting! Jump into emergency console…” followed by a line beginning with # . I wrote the disk image twice on the SSD drive. Both times I got the same answer. I typed Login several times as suggested on other sites to always get the same result. I waited for long time home assistance will never load. Is there any command that needs to be used to initiate Home Assistant?.
That's interesting. I hate to say it this way but have you restarted it when that error shows? I've only gotten that once or twice and a restart resolved it. If you still don't have luck you'll need to access the log files on the machine to see what is causing it. Let me know if I can help, sorry that you're having that error.
. I was using Wi-Fi and the error disappeared when I used a wired connection to the router. I have HA now and I’m learning the ropes. Thank you for the nice and clear instructions.
Ok so I have an issue where my light was previously setup in my dorm room through Bluetooth, and now it's at my house and won't show up
what kind of speakers work with google cast? Personally i dont like to sound quality of the google speakers. But some speakers can be used with google home, will these work within google chromecast in HA?
Yep those should work !
On my Pi4, I connected to internet via wired network, and on first boot it started the Pi Imager. I chose the latest 64bit RaspberryOS, and it installed to the NVMe drive (Argon case with NVMe option) Robert is Your Avuncular Relative Easy-Peasy
I’ll need to try that!
Thank you for this video!! Do you know if there is a way to make the RATGDO put the gate in "party mode"? I have an LA500 with the expansion board, and you have to go out to the gate keypad to put it in party mode (hard open, bypassing any auto-close settings).
I'll be honest this is the first I am hearing of it! I wouldn't think so as the ratgdo is really just "pushing" a button. My first thought would be to turn off any auto close settings and use a HomeAssistant automation to mimic the same result but that isn't really what you are asking.
That’s what I was thinking too. I think I’m going to go this route. Thank you for your help!!
This was incredibly helpful, thank you thank you thank you!
I’m glad it was helpful! There’s an in depth write up on the HA forums but some people haven’t had as much luck as I have had with this method. I’d say mine works 95% of the time but there’s definitely been some dead times. The expansion board isn’t worth it for me right now but you should be aware of it !
I'm confused on how you get the mqtt ip address. I connect via duckdns, so there's no ip address for my ha server.
Duckdns just points to the ip of your server. You can check it in your network settings inside HA. If you’re hosting MQTT and HA on the same machine you can try localhost
None of that is working. MQTT is installed as an addon in HA, which is installed on bare metal on a usff PC. HA says the local ipv4 is 192.168.50.122, but I can't connect using that address. I also tried localhost, and it won't connect either. Do I need to have the home assistant URL for local set to the IP address for this to work? I have the duckdns address for both local and remote, per whatever tutorial I was following at the time I setup duckdns.
You shouldn’t need to. If it is hosted inside HA as an addon it should just need to be pointed at itself. It wouldn’t need to hit the duckdns server to route back to you. Hop on my discord and I can try to help with screenshots
I think you went a little overkill on the framing underneath. That thing could probably hold concrete at this point! But it looks nice and trial and error is the best way to learn how to build these. Good work man!
Thanks, I have come to realize it was probably too much. I had an irrational fear of 13 bags of soil getting wet then breaking through the bottom 😆
@@ChuckBuilds Totally understandable! I built my first beds out of 2x4s and 4x4s for the posts. I just did 4 2x4s spread out along the bottom to support the landscape fabric/soil and it's held up for about 3 years now. Working on a couple now but just using 1x4 cedar.
secure boot is not on my NUC. Is that a problem?
Nope, we would disable it anyways!
Can we use this in the same casaos server with 2 different Google photo accounts abd keep the pictures separate?
I would think so! You could just run 2 containers with different file paths
Hey, I like the way to created this video, very easy to follow for a new user. You help the user go from point A to B with easy explanation. Hopefully we can see more of these kind of videos. Just a shout out to you.
Thank you! If you have something you want me to cover, let me know!
hey chuck, great tutorial, easy to follow. Can you help me with my setup? immich-go is not finding my files. I tried also the immich cli and i can upload picture by picture ( immich upload --key xxx 10.0.0.31:30041/api 20190125_165729_453C5F73.jpg ) but when i modified to ( ( immich upload --key xxx 10.0.0.31:30041/api *.jpg ) it always return "crawling dor assets... no files found" Thanks!!
It should be looking for a zip file, not *.jpg. Are you using Google takeout or just a collection of photos?
@@ChuckBuilds It started to work, thanks for you interest!
So basically whatever machine you choose is sacrificed for home assistant? In the end you have to save it to the computer which will erase the OS and everything else that’s on it?
If you choose to go the dedicated hardware route or "bare-metal". That is why I like to recommend cheap, low power hardware. If you are more savvy - you should check out a HAOS Virtual Machine or HA Docker container. Both would allow you to run HomeAssistant without "sacrificing" the whole machine. Happy to explain more if you need
@@ChuckBuilds I remember those as an option, I would be lying if I said I remembered why they wouldn’t work great for my situation. Home assist will be monitoring 20-30 different sensors 24/7 and activating pumps/ valves to add water and nutrients as needed. I feel like it had to do with that fact that the virtual machines wouldn’t be great. I think it might be easier for me to just by a raspberry pi, and run the Arduino’s and esp32’s off of that. Seems like the raspberry pi is really the intended platform, and would probably be the easiest for someone like me (feel free to fill in the blanks there lol)
Raspberry Pi is a great platform but I strongly urge you to use an SSD instead of an microSD card. The constant log writing will kill microSD cards. I find used micropc’s to be a sweet spot for performance to price, can be cheaper than a pi and include an ssd, case, fan, etc. a VM would maybe be a better choice on something like Proxmox and NOT on windows via something like virtual box. Docker has its own challenges and limitations that I don’t recommend for a new comer to tackle docker and HA at the same time. 20-30 sensors shouldn’t be a problem for a pi , the rpi can be a bottleneck if you start processing video streams
I just don’t understand how either video has all the information. In no way is it your fault, I should have never done this. 10 fucking hours later, I have never made it into home assistant and I now have a laptop with Ubuntu as its main and only os. That shit didn’t “work side by side” with a fucking thing. It’s 2024 why the fuck is it so hard to download a god damn APP? This is fucking insane, all to control some mother fucking lights WHAT THE FUCK!
Hey! I responded to some of your other comments but I can help you more on Discord. Homeassistant Operating System is intended to be run by itself and on a dedicated machine, which is why I recommend cheaper hardware. If you want it to run “side by side” on one machine you’ll need to virtualize it or host the docker container.
@@ChuckBuilds I have come to learn that.thank you for your help. I have to buy another machine this morning. In the end both the old laptops I had were wiped clean.

@@ChuckBuilds you are a wealth of knowledge chuck, thank you
Yea right at 7:04 how do you go from that home assist page to the internet browser?
It’s a separate computer. You won’t be able to access HomeAssistant OS from the same pc that’s hosting it
Idk I’m stuck at the home assistant command line page. How were you jumping back to your regular OS to use the internet? No matter what Indo it just boots to this home assist command line page
The web browser you saw was a separate computer, when you get to the HomeAssistant Command line with the IP, you’re done. Go to another device to access home assistant
Solved went from wireless to cat 5 to router switch. I followed install on a Optiplex 3050 following all your instructions. Everything went as expected except after restart I am getting [WARN] Home Assistant CLI not starting!. Jumping into emergency mode and blinking cursor. Any ideas? Reinstall? I appreciate any help absolute newbe to HA. Thanks Neil Update Fail after - A start job is running for Wait Until Kernel Time Sycnhronized { Time counter counting up}
I did a quick search and it might be an issue with your system time not matching? Sounds kind of strange to me but make sure you’re connected to the internet when installing and possibly try again on a different usb drive. Keep me posted and I’ll try to help! Might be worth checking your bios time too
Hello, I did the same thing you showed in the video, but the case gets very hot, how can I control the fan?
There’s an addon for the argon one inside of HomeAssistant that lets you control the fan curve!
