Revisiting my old stomping grounds with an urban exploration of Vancouver in October. It's been quite some time since I've lived and paddled downtown. Reminds me of all the Ecomarine days taking tourists sea kayaking from Granville Island. Fun times! The Granville Bridge opened in 1954 btw. Typo.

Greenland Rolling Practice Spring 2024

I always tell my students that rolling is a "use it or lose it" skill. That was VERY evident on my first day out in my Greenland Kayak this year as I tried a bunch of rolls that I hadn't done since last summer. No wet exits but my technique and form are out of shape and need work. Practice practice practice! :-) For those interested in the full list of 35 Greenland Championship maneuvers visit ...

Another great Rolling Clinic at Jericho with James Manke. We were teaching Kayak Outfitting ("wear your kayak like a boot"), the Load/Drive Concept (wind up and release) and Rotation/Flotation (using torso Rotation to Float to the back deck). Our students practiced Balance Braces, Butterfly Rolls and Hand Rolls. It's always incredibly rewarding to see students getting their first rolls!

was it cold?
No with a drysuit it's all good. It's like skiing or snow boarding; as long as you wear the right gear you're comfortable.
Nice place for a paddle, the sea lions do not apear to be shy at all by the way they look up and out of the water. what gloves are you wearing? You seem to be doing the "loading of the baseball arm" (pre tension) for increased momentum as explained by Manke before your rolls, do you also do the tension on a "half" roll? as in if capsized and first need to do the setup then roll.
Those gloves are just thin MEC but I also use Level 6 and Cressi depending on how cold it is. For rolling, yes, I always "load and drive" even if I am setting up upside down. I've done lots of rolling with James :-) Thanks for watching.
Looks like an amazing day on the water, thank you for sharing.
Really interesting seeing the search light towers. Were they actually used much? Be great if they were restored
Thanks and thanks for watching. Not sure. The info I found on the search lights was pretty limited.
1:32 that’s an Eric Hamber Secondary school crest! I went to that high school and to see it randomly on your video brings back lots of fun memories.

Excelente. Gracias por la rutina. Saludos desde Buenos Aires Argentina.
Thanks for watching in Argentina!
Bro, I'm proud of how you took kayaking to a new level. Bravo!!!
Tomek! Great to hear from you man. Thanks and all the best.
My next step is try and get a L4, I trained hard for the L3 and I think Ive learned a lot since then. Great videos I see we share a lot of the same interests.
Cool! Good luck. If you can get Michael and Mike from Skils you'll be learning from some of the best. Thanks for watching.
why not lions gate bridge to iron workers?
As much as I'd like to that is a restricted area and non motorized watercraft are not allowed. I would be picked up by the Coast Guard pretty quick. It's all video camera monitored. The whirlpools and currents can also be treacherous under the Lions Gate.
@@mmcholm Oh really? I was thinking going super quick under the lions...and then be stealthy along the beautiful east van shoreline :) Seriously i'd love to see you film that...

Drove to Vancouver from Wisconsin in June 1978 for our honeymoon. I remember it as a wondrous metro area surrounded by nature. I'd love to go back and kayak it now. Best seafood dinner ever was at The Ship of the Seven Seas (floating restaurant). It was an seasonable 90+ deg F and the city beaches were packed. Locals directed us just down the coast to what turned out to be the nude beaches! "When in Vancouver, do as ..."😁
Thanks for sharing. We still have a nude beach haha and great seafood.

GRAY SKY 10 MONTH A YEAR THAT IS VERY DEPRESSING...I AM CANADIAN/BRAZILIAN LIVING IN BRAZIL FOR THE PAST 6 YEARS TODAY IS NOV. 5TH, 2024. LOOKING AT THE MISERABLE VANCOUVER WEATHER IN THIS VIDEO IT IS GIVING ME WEIRD FEELING LIKE I DO NOT MISS IT AT ALL...STRANGE FEELING THAT I CAN'T REALLY DESCRIBE IT...!!!
Yeah the rain takes a lot of getting used to. At least kayaking is a wet sport! ;-)
I love the rain. I returned here after decades away.
Because thats what a drysuit is for! 😂 Kudos to you for all-weather paddling.
The epitome of a typical Vancouver fall paddle! I thoroughly enjoyed watching that. I looks as though I'll be moving back to the Vancouver area in the next little while; I'd love to join you for some day trips like this one day and take some additional skills courses at JBK. I've currently got my PC L2, but could use some rolling clinics before I move onto L3.
Thanks and thanks for watching. Sounds good! I'll be doing lots of clinics next season.
That was AWESOME!
Thanks and thanks for watching!
Love this series. As a canoe paddler, solo wilderness tripping in Canada, I'm still a neophyte with a kayak (1+ yr). This is inspirational. Looking to upgrade to a Delta 17 in spring '25.
Thanks and thank you for watching!
So envious of your humpback sightings... The joys of seeing nature is such a joy for us paddlers to experience
Do you have any recommendations for resources that cover the "Weather Interpretation & Basic Forecasting" component of this course?
Hi. I'd recommend Skils book on Nautical Navigation: Navigation, Sea State, Weather -A Paddler's Manual skils.ca/store/Book-Navigation-Sea-State-Weather-A-Paddlers-Manual-Freedom-of-the-Seas-Volume-1-2020-Second-Edition-Paperback-$30-99-or-eBook-$20-00-p10572295
@@mmcholm Thanks for this information. Based on the table of contents it looks like a comprehensive guide. And even better that it’s written from a Canadian perspective (I live is Eastern Ontario). I’ll order the ebook version.
Thanks for putting this together. Good inspiration for me to get my L3 conditions cleared off.
It looks like a lot of fun. I am just back from a weekend of whitewater paddling (first since the spring) and this really brings home that it is great practice & experience for sea kayaking.
Gmail emailed me your comment about the Werner Stikine paddle. Mine is not feathered. I am traditionally a Greenland paddler but I do really love the Stikine except for that it isn't balanced; meaning if you don't grip it tightly when rolling it will spin upside down with the powerface facing up. In my opinion feathering is all about grip. If you have the typical Euro blade control hand and hold the paddle with those knuckles in line with the top of the blade, and keep a tight grip, then high angle paddling with a small feather might be comfortable (but arguably not necessary). I pretty much never feather and despite talking to many very experienced paddlers and instructors about it, and watching tons of videos, and reading lots of articles. I really see no need to feather if you have a loose Greenland style grip on your paddle (like I do nearly each time you see me using a Euro blade). I consider my forward stroke symmetrical so feathering would just require me to rotate my right wrist on each stroke which gets tiring.
@@mmcholm I made a Greenland paddle and used it for a while until I got a Cyprus and then it kind of took over. My Greenland could stand a bit of further thinning down, something I just haven’t got around to doing. I played with feather with it and it seemed that a slight feather (15 degrees) maybe made the catch seem smoother. When I started doing a bit of whitewater paddling and got the Stikine (used) I figured maybe I should standardize on 30 which seemed to work fine until I found rolling was more reliable without the feather. I hadn’t thought about the relationship between feather and grip. I certainly don’t want to have to use a tighter grip. I’ll have to try the Stikine again to see about the balance. I have to say that I do generally feel that it feels a bit ‘clunky’ to paddle with for some reason. I got a smoking deal on another used Cyprus so have been using it for WW the past few times and find it works better than any other WW paddle I’ve used thus far. Appreciate your replies and videos.
@@AndrewMoizer I have Cyrpus as well. It's fine for Class 1-2 sea state but for big white water I go to the Werner Stikine or my Gearlab Aukaneck as they are much stronger. I wouldn't be doing any recreational touring or anything like that with a big white water paddle as the purchase is too strong for that. I use my Gearlab Kalleq and Kajaksport Inuskuk or Werner Kaliste for touring and calmer water.
Hi can you tell me how long it took to kayak from Whytecliff Park to Bowen Island (length of the cross if you know as well. Thanks!
The crossing is about 2 nautical miles (about 40 minutes at 3 NM/hr).
Nice footage, what are you filming with?
Thanks. I'm using a GoPro 9 (my 11 got water damaged) and Wondershare Filmora for the editing.
Iv got to get a kayak

Looks like they all had a fun time... how does this equate to the Paddle UK Sea Kayaking awards? Is it Sea Kayak Award level or more Sea Kayak Leader equivalent?
Yeah it was a fun trip. I'm not familiar with the UK program but Paddle Canada describe it as follows: "Building on the skills developed in Level-1, Level-2 provides paddlers with the intermediate skills they need to go sea kayaking in class-2 conditions along semi-exposed shoreline with a possible overnight bivvy." The Level corresponds with Paddle Canada's Sea State Classifications: paddlecanada.com/levels/sea-kayak/sea-kayak-level-2-skills/ Cheers
Paddle Canada level 2 course is amazing!
Making it look easy! Was just thinking of you last week - was out at Jericho and saw a guy in a beautiful wooden Greenland boat practicing rolls.
Hi Irene! I was wondering if you were still kayaking out of Jericho. I think I know who you mean; a former student mentioned he just got/built a Greenland Kayak.
I wish I could kayak like that. You really know what you’re doing. If you ever take tours out, please let me know!

How fast is the 5 figures kayak?
The 5 to 5.8 km/h (kilometres per hour) is about 2.5 to 3 knots. We made better time on the return route.
Looks an amazing place to visit... lovely seeing some snow on distant mountain peaks too
Yes Howe Sound is a great place to paddle. There are 7 BC Marine Trail Sites in Howe Sound (www.bcmarinetrails.org/)
Awesome!! 👏 👏 How cold was the water??
Thanks and thanks for watching. The waterfall was colder than the ocean! This was November so not so bad.
Of very little if use to someone wanting to learn their roll
Thanks for watching. This is a video of Rolling Instructors being trained to teach people to roll. No intent here to provide guidance to viewers looking to learn how to roll other than to see some examples of how clinics go. The key take away would be the load drive concept and rotation/flotation for those learning to roll (which is demonstrated by one of the best rolling instructors out there James Manke).
that looks fun. Y'all are really solid at rolling
Thanks and thanks for watching!
Well, as a beginning sea kayaker, that was impressive. Relaxed, all about hips and positioning. Gives me a lot of confidence that I don’t necessarily have to use a perfect roll sweep. Or even a paddle! Nice. 😅
Thanks for watching! Good luck with your rolls.
Very cool.
Thanks for watching!
Hello folks! Nice session there. Love the use of traditional tech, I'm a hige fan! I'm also an amateur qajaq builder without space to build or store kayaks. After a dozen build with different technique, I am now hoping to build using a hybrid technique of CNC router cut laminated frame integrated to the hull, or a empty SOF like composite kayak. I also have a 18' by 18" SOF frame ready to be skinned. It's a qajaq that's been skinned previously. Since a few ribs were sticiking out, skin has been removed and frame reworked. First time is was skinned, this finished qajaq was tipping the scale at 19 lbs. Get in touch if you have space and want to embark on a Greenland inspired gear adventure!
Thanks for watching. Good luck with your builds!
Wow, rolling, rolling, and rolling! I am planning to take the L2 course next year. It is a good preview for me. Thanks!

Yeay super fun group. Made our job easier.
Great video Mike! I've added a link to it at the bottom of my blog posting about the weekend.

Awesome!!! What are the models of all the kayaks you're rolling? I've been looking for something with low volume, hard chine, and la ow back deck. Those boats look perfect.
Those are Greenland style kayaks. Two Tahe-Marine Zeguls and a Rebel (they bought Tahe) but I'm not sure which model. We all have these Greenland style kayaks specifically for rolling practice.
Thanks@@mmcholm for the reply and for the great video!
