The Gospel of Matthew (Trewhella) & The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates, with Phoebe Petrovich
In this episode, Will Wright interviews Phoebe Petrovich, an investigative reporter with ProPublica's Local Reporting Network. The discussion centers around her latest story on Pastor Matthew Trewhella. Trewhella, who was once an extremist anti-abortion activist, has gained influence within certain GOP circles through his book "The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates." This doctrine, rooted in 16th-century Protestant resistance theory, advocates for local officials to defy laws they deem unjust based on their interpretation of God's law.
Phoebe explains Trewhella's transformation from a militant activist to a thought leader embraced by some mainstream Republicans. She highlights how his ideas have permeated various political and social arenas, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, where his doctrine provided a framework for resisting government mandates. The episode delves into Trewhella's influence on Second Amendment sanctuaries, local governance, and his broader impact on the far-right movement.

Guest Bio:
Phoebe is a radio journalist whose work has aired on “Reveal,” NPR’s “Morning Edition” and “Here & Now.” In the past year, she served as a general assignment reporter at Wisconsin Public Radio through the Lee Ester News Fellowship and editorial radio intern at “Reveal,” where she helped cover family separation and other immigration stories. She earned her B.A. from Yale University, where she founded and led audio projects including Herald Audio, the first-ever audio section of an undergraduate publication, and “Small-Great Objects,” the first-ever podcast series installed at Yale University Art Gallery.
Phoebe covers criminal justice, in particular, the issues revolving around prosecutorial misconduct and unethical conduct in Wisconsin. Her first major project is a podcast and multimedia exploration of the myriad obstacles facing defendants when the prosecution is tainted by misconduct - and how that system could be improved.

Clay Clark … you need to have a true “come to Yeshua moment”! When I saw the satanic symbolism on the cover of your books… it woke me up to who you actually follow. It’s not Christ. I pray you repent and turn to Christ and not the ruler of this world. It hurts my heart that you are leading many astray and may a true God led awakening occur in your heart. I pray Kash Patel will also repent and retract that childrens book with a wizard which is witchcraft. I pray you take heed of this warning bc You cannot fool the Lord… He sees all and will judge accordingly. Beware of who you are following… may you choose the Lord bc time is running out. “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭16‬:‭13‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Jules Isaac, a French Jewish historian, said “Christianity has a theology of contempt towards Judaism.” It’s over 2000 years old and it pervades our culture. No one is immune to it. It doesn’t matter what denomination you are, your ethnicity, nationality or race. It may be unconscious or subconscious but it’s there. It even includes those who are critiquing Christian Nationalism. Yes it even includes Jews too who internalized this anti-Judaism. Anti-Judaism permeates all of Christianity. One person, whose name escapes me, accuses Christian Nationalists of “Judaizing.” Atheists are not immune either. The Pharisees had zero power but the priests were appointed by the Romans.

Great conversation. An example similar to your football analogy. Fox show host is accused of criticizing Kamala Harris for speaking at “colored” sorority today instead of attending speech by Israeli prime minister. Harris supporters say he said colored and called Fox host racist. Trump supporters say he said college. And accuse democrats of calling everything racist. Each side looking at same video is convinced they’re right. I’m a democrat. It’s clear he said college. But he also called Harris a DEI hire. So in way both sides are right.

Secularism as religious neutrality, an how to not confuse it with antitheism: My best way to picture it: Properly done, a secular society is a better home for Christians than a theocratic Christian state ever could be... because what are the odds that the ruling theocrats would end up being YOUR exact denomination? Slim to none. Everything would be a constant test of purity/piety/sincerity... plus a slide into dictatorship almost guaranteed. Meanwhile in a pluralistic secular country you'd still have all your religious freedom of belief anc peactice anyway.

It's a contrast so blunt and stark and obvious I donxt even need to list the metrics and statistics, you already know.

There were even nations in biblical times, and without borders, we can't have economies, and without economies, we can't feed ourselves, keep rooves over our heads, and have fresh water to drink. It's funny to see what a leftist will do to twist logic and bend reality to try to make sense of their views. By the way, people were able to righteously defend their own lives in biblical times, as well. Nationalism? We have common beliefs, morals, and ethics. We abide by agreed upon laws. Other countries and nations have different beliefs. When we have open borders, we end up allowing those not willing to integrate, and isntead mean to change our ways. Islam is a prime example of this. *shakes head* Have a blessed day, and maybe stop trying to inject your political views onto others by trying to use the bible to do so. The bible has some rather stern things to say about using God's name in vain.

    • @FaithfulPolitics
      @FaithfulPolitics 17 днів тому

Thank you for your comment! It’s clear that you have strong feelings about nationalism and borders, and these are indeed important topics. I’d like to address a few points you’ve raised to provide some clarity and context. 1. Biblical Nations and Borders: You’re right that there were nations in biblical times, and they had their own forms of governance, economies, and ways to protect and sustain their populations. However, the concept of a nation in biblical times was different from our modern understanding of nation-states. For example, ancient Israel was more of a tribal confederation initially, with borders that were often fluid and defined by tribal territories rather than fixed national boundaries. 2. Economies and Survival: Economies are indeed crucial for the survival and well-being of any society. In the Bible, we see various economic systems, from agricultural and trade economies to complex tax systems under the Roman Empire. These economies were essential for sustaining communities, much like today. However, it’s also worth noting that the biblical message often emphasizes justice, fairness, and caring for the poor and marginalized, suggesting that economies should serve the people rather than the other way around. 3. Defense and Righteousness: Defending oneself and one’s community is a principle found in the Bible. However, the teachings of Jesus also place a strong emphasis on loving one’s neighbor, turning the other cheek, and seeking peace. The challenge for Christians is to balance these teachings in a way that aligns with the overall message of the Gospel. 4. Nationalism and Common Beliefs: Nationalism, as an ideology, is relatively modern and wasn’t present in the same way in biblical times. While it’s true that shared beliefs, morals, and ethics are important for societal cohesion, it’s also important to remember that the Bible calls Christians to love and welcome the stranger (Leviticus 19:34, Matthew 25:35). The tension between maintaining a cohesive community and welcoming outsiders is a complex issue that requires thoughtful consideration and compassion. 5. Integration and Open Borders: The issue of immigration and integration is indeed a contentious one. While it’s true that different countries have different beliefs and practices, the biblical mandate to love our neighbors and care for the stranger challenges us to think deeply about how we treat immigrants and refugees. It’s a call to hospitality and justice, balanced with wisdom and prudence. 6. Using the Bible for Political Views: It’s important to approach the Bible with humility and recognize that it has been used to support various political viewpoints throughout history. The key is to engage with the text faithfully and thoughtfully, seeking to understand its deeper message rather than using it as a tool for political ends. The Bible’s teachings on justice, mercy, and love should guide our actions and policies. Thank you again for your comment. I hope this response provides some additional perspective on these important issues. Have a blessed day.

@@FaithfulPolitics I don't disagree with what you said in your reply. I think it's a discussion that's a lot deeper and longer than afforded to things like social media. My final thought is that the Bible does tell us to live a Godly life, and not a Worldly one, setting worldly concerns such as politics aside, as those things are for the masses who do not walk the narrow path. In light of that, and politics aside, my views on self defense are enhanced by the fact that I have had to defend my life and the lives of my family from someone who assaulted us, unprovoked, and enarly took my life. That encounter is what actually brought my into the light, and was the catalyst for my rebirth in Christ. It is a discussion for another day, though. Be well. Vaya con Dios.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. The episode with Grace Ji-Sun Kim indeed tackles some deep and challenging issues related to race, faith, and history. I understand that this topic can stir strong emotions, so I want to address your concern thoughtfully. Understanding the Discussion: The conversation with Grace Ji-Sun Kim in the episode focuses on exploring how the concept of “whiteness” has been constructed and maintained historically to uphold power and privilege, and how these constructs have infiltrated religious spaces. This isn’t about promoting lies or an evil ideology; it’s about examining and understanding the historical and sociological realities that have shaped our world and our faith. Historical Context: The depiction of a white Jesus, as discussed in the episode, is part of a broader historical narrative where colonialism and slavery were justified using religious imagery and teachings. This has had lasting effects on how people perceive race and religion. Acknowledging this history helps us work towards a more just and inclusive faith community. Personal Experience: Grace shares her personal experiences as a Korean immigrant facing racism and sexism, which have influenced her theological perspective. Her insights offer a valuable viewpoint on how different cultural and racial backgrounds interact with Christianity. Promoting Justice and Inclusion: The goal of these discussions is not to spread an ideology but to promote justice, inclusivity, and a deeper understanding of Christianity that transcends racial and gender biases. It’s about reimagining religious symbols and language to better reflect the diversity and love inherent in the teachings of Jesus. Invitation to Reflect: These conversations invite us all to reflect on our own beliefs and practices, and how they might be influenced by historical constructs. It’s a call to align our faith more closely with the principles of love, justice, and inclusivity that Jesus taught. I appreciate you taking the time to engage with this topic. Dialogue and reflection are essential for growth and understanding. Have a blessed day!

I'm a married gay man. Not woke but don't want to be discriminated against. Fredrich Wilhem von Stuben google who he was. He was an openly gay general that Washington appointed to train our militias into an Independence War winning army

Thank you for sharing your perspective and bringing up Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben. Your point about not wanting to be discriminated against is incredibly important, and it ties into some of the themes we discussed with Dr. Kevin Roberts. Historical Context: As you mentioned, Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben played a crucial role in the American Revolutionary War. His contributions as an openly gay general demonstrate that individuals have historically made significant impacts regardless of their personal lives. This underscores the importance of recognizing and valuing people based on their abilities and contributions rather than discriminating against them for their personal lives. Education and Understanding: In our conversation with Dr. Roberts, we emphasized the importance of education in building a more informed and just society. Dr. Roberts, with his background in African American history and understanding of complex social issues like Critical Race Theory, advocates for education that includes diverse perspectives and promotes critical thinking. Your comment highlights the need for inclusive education that respects and acknowledges the contributions of all individuals, including those from the LGBTQ+ community. Finding Common Ground: The episode also delves into the concept of school choice and voucher programs, aiming to elevate the educational standing of all Americans. Just as we seek to find common ground in educational reform, we also need to find common ground in how we treat and respect each other in society. Ensuring that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, race, or background, is treated with fairness and dignity is essential for a cohesive society. Addressing Discrimination: It’s important to address concerns about discrimination head-on. By learning from history and promoting inclusive education, we can work towards a society where everyone feels valued and respected. Your mention of von Steuben is a powerful reminder that our history is enriched by diverse individuals who have made significant contributions, and honoring their legacy means striving for equality and justice for all. Thank you again for your comment and for highlighting an important piece of history. Conversations like these help us move towards a more inclusive and just society. Have a great day!

I'm 26 mins in, and hoping for a working definition of Christian Nationalism - as they see it / the kind they hope to address, at least. Also, this seems to have a bit slanted/uncharitable interpretation of others at times. The bible doesn't say anything about gun rights just like the bible doesn't say anything about pornography. But maybe the person meant in principle/application. And why assume that the person you spoke to hasn't read and considered for themselves what the bible says? (FYI I'm not American, don't have a gun, and am not sold on Christian Nationalism... But some proponents have given me pause for thought about my politically libertarian bent.)

Thank you for your thoughtful comment and for engaging with the episode. It’s great that you’re looking for a working definition of Christian Nationalism, and I appreciate your desire for clarity. Let me provide some context and address your points. Definition of Christian Nationalism: In the episode, Caleb Campbell discusses Christian Nationalism as a movement that intertwines religious beliefs with political ideologies, often asserting that the United States is fundamentally a Christian nation and should be governed by Christian principles. This form of nationalism can create a divisive environment, where political and religious identities are fused in ways that can lead to exclusion and marginalization of those who don’t share the same beliefs. Charitable Interpretation: You raise an important point about the need for charitable interpretation. While the Bible doesn’t explicitly address modern issues like gun rights or pornography, it provides principles that people interpret and apply to various aspects of life. The episode emphasizes the importance of deep biblical literacy and critical thinking to ensure these interpretations align with the teachings of Jesus, rather than being co-opted for political gain. Considering Different Perspectives: It’s crucial to recognize that people on all sides of the debate have likely considered the Bible’s teachings. Caleb Campbell’s approach, as highlighted in the episode, involves engaging with Christian Nationalists through a pastoral lens, focusing on the heart rather than the head. This means creating a safe and hospitable environment for dialogue, where both sides can learn from each other with humility and open-mindedness. Historical and Cultural Context: Caleb’s metaphor of Leviathan represents the chaotic and evil forces that work against God’s order. Understanding why people are drawn to Christian Nationalism, such as fears of ethnic erasure and desires for power and protection, helps in addressing these concerns compassionately. Pastors and political actors often play roles in perpetuating these beliefs, making it essential for the church to promote deep biblical understanding and critical thinking. A Mission Field: The episode encourages viewing Christian Nationalism as a mission field, where engagement involves inviting people into thoughtful conversations about how the gospel applies to political actions. This involves challenging the tension between their beliefs and Jesus’ teachings through humble subversion, emphasizing curiosity over suspicion. Thank you for listening and for your thoughtful engagement. If you have more questions or insights, we’d love to hear them. Have a great day!

@@FaithfulPolitics "This involves challenging the tension between..." About that. - Certainly it's natural to want to persuade when we engage folks, as well as understand them. As a Christian I certainly identify with that. But when it comes to politics and policy, let's remember to extend our curiosity to the tension between our own current beliefs and others' valid interpretations/applications of scripture.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It's important to approach these discussions with an open mind and consider different perspectives. The episode with Clay Clark aimed to delve into his viewpoints and the motivations behind the ReAwaken America Tour. Whether one agrees or disagrees with his message, understanding the reasons behind such movements can provide valuable insights into the current political and social climate. It's always beneficial to critically assess the information presented and engage in thoughtful dialogue about the issues at hand. If you have specific concerns or questions about the content discussed, we'd be happy to address them and continue the conversation. Thanks again for engaging with the episode!

Personal attacks and baseless accusations have no place in respectful dialogue. This episode features Bradley Moss, a respected attorney specializing in national security, federal employment, and security clearance law, discussing the legal implications of the DOJ’s search of former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property. If you have any constructive feedback or questions about the content of the episode, we encourage you to share those. Engaging in thoughtful and respectful discussions helps everyone better understand different perspectives. Thank you for keeping the conversation respectful.
