We Bought a Boat
United Kingdom
Приєднався 17 січ 2013
A family starting their sailing journey from scratch with no previous sailing experience. We are going to share our journey from purchasing our first boat, to learning how to sail her. We are going to be based from Benfleet Yacht Club on the southeast coast and plan to take many adventures and sail further afield as our experience and confidence grows.
We bought a boat ep15 (Can you have the Youtube Sailing life on a budget?)
In this episode we discuss having that UA-cam sailing life style on a budget on the east coast of the UK. We look at the boat we bought, locations we have visited and the conditions we have experienced in our first season of sailing.

As you know i have been watching your channel for some time now and recently i have posted a vlog of my boat. To view it the link is SV GEMSTAR or is your channel only for the uk viewers?. Recovering well from my hernia and i have some orders comming so i will be doing some more vlogs. Gerard.
Great stuff great channel 👍🇦🇺
I'll come down there
The idea of Sailing is to not line the pockets of others!!
£30 a night!!?.. I Anchor in the Pyfleet and use my dingy... I can get merry in the Yachtsman on the £30 that I save!! £30 Is ridiculously expensive!!
@@stevenwatsham5973 as soon as my anchor is fixed I’ll take a leaf out of your book 🤜👍
For sure you can have the same level of enjoyment, you just need to dress appropriately!
Hi, just started watching your channel and enjoying watching your videos. I’m looking for a boat at the moment & have been interested in getting bilge keel one for sailing around the uk. So out off interest how have you found sailing one yourself ?. Does it point well into wind & what was your decision to go with a bilge keel. I guess being able to dry out in small harbours.
@@gaplife3611 hi and thank you for the comment. We decided on a bilge keel after choosing Benfleet yacht club as our first home, being on the east coast and hearing lots of people discussing the area a bilge keel was a no brainer. We are lucky with dancing bear as she has been set up better for up wind sailing having the mast repositioned helps with weather helming. Knowing we are able to sit on our keels does bring some peace of mind that if we get it wrong with the tides we can just sit and wait for the next which in video one happened when picking her up from her marina. It really depends on your location and sailing area.
Thanks for your reply. ⛵️
G"day. In relation to tides, just make sure that your boat is not too high up on the bank and that the next high tide is higher or about the same otherwise you may not get off the bank. Have you seen my video of the inside of my boat ?. The link is, SV GEM STAR. Please leave a like and click on the Bell and leave a comment. as i have a few small projects comming up. Nice vlog. Gerard.
Love your channel because it's about sailing in the UK and it doesn't need to be expensive to be fun. East coast seems to be quite challenging. We will soon be getting a 22 footer to sail in the Plymouth area hoping to venture as far as Salcombe on a good weather window. Sadly we couldn't find a reasonably priced used 30ft that didn't require tons of maintenance and improvements.
@@StormBlueHull thank you so much for the lovely comment. It had at times been challenging but overall we have enjoyed the east coast but that being said we are really looking forward to the south coast next season. We will be around the Portland area as a base but Plymouth is somewhere I have memories from as a child as my grandparents lived there, so will definitely be on the plans to visits next year. Good luck with the boat purchase and do let us know how it goes and maybe we bump into you next season 👍
What kind of boat is it? Looks to me like an Alberg design. Known to be quite seaworthy!
Are you sure your draft is just 0.9?
@@NauticalSimulation yes it’s exactly 0.99m or 3.25ft
@Sailingdancingbear blimey! That is a really shallow draft for such a big boat. Forgive me, what boat do you have again? (I know you mentioned it in EP 1). I have an MW27, and our draft is 1.6 - 1.8. One of the things I learnt when looking at boats (this is also my first boat) was that small bilge keels slip & don't give a consistent or comfortable ride when healed (I don't know if you have experienced it at full heal yet?) But on the plus side, that slide is meant to be great in Big waves; as it slides down them instead of bite in and pull...(prob wrong terminology, but hopefully, you get what I mean)?
@@NauticalSimulation it’s a snapdragon 890
Had her over in a 20knot blow but she seemed track well apart from trying hard to round up but I think that’s more to do with my lack of experience with sail trim and balance
The hernia procedure went well so i will be heading back home on my boat at Airlie Beach north Queensland Australia. Next week i am going to do a small replacement on deck just a simple project to keep things moving. The link to my video log is SV GEMSTAR. There is a video i made last week. Hope you get time to look at it. Gerard.
Nice video, on looking at a boat with a bit more room I would look at some other models of 30-32 ft first, even some 29 footers offer a good deal of internal space. The Westerly Konsort being a good example, really good association for any issues you might have and invariable these hulls are of sound construction. Thanks for the mention, for a first year afloat you've done a good few trips...some don't leave the marina...or the bar for that matter, each to their own😎
@@samsails9820 thanks matey I do think that another season or two with this one will be fine once I get her round to the south coast for some sun and beaches
Decisions decisions! We started sailing five or six years ago with a little 23ft bilge keeler out of Falmouth. Just the two of us and the occasional son. After several seasons learning the lines and cruising between Dartmouth and the Scillies on a very basic boat we changed it for a late 80’s Beneteau Oceanis 320. So much more space and comfort which we both appreciate. A boat a few feet longer might give more space but then you start increasing the cost of maintenance and storage/berthing. And in our case with just two of us, apart from a few days of the season, the space below deck is perfectly fine. Whilst ours has previously done the Atlantic circuit twice, it’s not something we aren’t ever likely to attempt, coastal sailing and cross channel hops is enough for us and a boat of this size copes with that easily. We were lucky in that despite being an older boat it was in very good condition and whilst we have put some new sails on and replaced the standing rigging the rest has just been cosmetic work which gives me something to do over the winter. Would we still be sailing if we hadn’t changed the boat? Probably, but would we swap back, no. Do we envisage upsizing? Not without a darn good reason, we just don’t feel the costs are justified given our use case. Enough waffle, good luck with whatever you decide to do and we all look forward to being able to sail to and from our destinations more next season.
@@atschris thank you for commenting and giving a real world example. Your comments are really helpful.
This week i am in hospital having my hernia repaired. Have made the first vlog on my boat. More will be coming as i fully recover from the procedure at the hospital. Gerard.
@@SvGemstar so glad to hear all has gone well, please send me the link to first upload when it goes up 👍
@@Sailingdancingbear The link to my vlog channel is SV GEMSTAR. You ask the question if you bought the wrong boat ?. Well that depends on what your plans are in the future. Are you starting to use the boat more on the weekends ? Are you going on longer trips on your holidays and extending your time out on the water with the family ?. Are you planning to go blue water cruising in the season ?. Have a look at some of the other channels you will find a lot of people with 27 up to 32 ft cruising off shore and tripping around. So there are some thoughts about it. At present The main thing is, is the boat big enough for you to handle with the family on board and while you are still learning you may not want another boat for a while. Gerard.
@@SvGemstar thank you for answering the question and I will think about what you have said. I think for next season at least she is all we need
I am glad to hear that. Bigger boats get very expensive. Registration, insurance, storage, maintenance all goes up, So there's a lot more to think of. My boat is big enough for me as at present it's only myself living on board. Gerard.
@@SvGemstar I’ve found small boats can also be expensive lol

Great series of videos! I'm at Gravesend Sailing Club, learning the ropes. Hope to do the courses like yourself and get a cruiser after that. Like yourself I've subbed to so many yachting channels, you learn tit bits from everyone.
What was your reasoning for not having a marine survey? Personally, I would want a survey on a new factory boat if I am to sail uk waters in it
@@RockyRacoon66 I was very inexperienced when I bought the boat and was told by the owner that it would require me to pay for a new copper coat if I had a survey done, later I discovered this was not correct and there would have been no need to remove the copper coat for the inspection

@weboughtaboat2024 Will do👍🏼. We're still watching this film and it's got some fantastic information and great tips too. I agree with bilge keel yachts for the ease of drying out but heart is torn with the likes of a contessa. Either way we feel bilge keels offer best of both worlds. Have considered a lifting keel for the drying out thing and it's a possible consideration. Some sound advice in your film old chap, and thanks chap🫡😃👋
G"day Nice vlog as usual. It can be difficult sometimes to make a vlog when you are not motivated and not well. The last couple of months i have been waiting to go into hospital to have a hernia repaired and it just seems to drag on. So i have now a few small projects to do so now i can do my first vlog after i get back i will slow me down a bit till after i have recoverd then i will have some more projects to do. Learn to heave to as that will help by lighting the load on the mainsail and allow you to get the main down easier. I am still ill as i am going into hospital next month to have an hernia repaired. So that will slow me down a lot. Because of the wait time involved i have not been motivated to do the vlog, however i have a few small projects to do now, So i guess i can get started on the vlog. Gerard.
Excellent weekend away .loads of fun
Thanks for the heads up on Ardent Training, did my comp crew with Ionianmode this summer and am keen to move on to Day Skipper now. The Ardent online course for the theory looks great!
They do a free trail of the day skipper course which i'm on right now & they really are there for you. Reccommended.
Yep, I took the free trial and am doing the full course now. It's really well put together. Aiming to pass in next couple of weeks and do the practical in October. 🤞
@@_twelfthman Good Luck man, not that it's needed what with the way Ardent have set up the learning method. I'm looking to start next week, study through the winter then take the practical next Spring-winters are long here in Sweden

Hi Terry, great video...look forward to watching the rest and following your journey. What was the name of your instructor on your comp crew course....can you remember?
@@chrisswinnerton1729 only his first name I’m afraid Andrew
You also need to keep some tension on the furling line when you ease out the jibb / genoa and keep some tension when furling in the headsail. I also noticed that you are towing the dinghy, that will slow you down a little by adding drag on the boat. That's ok if you are not travelling far but you should either roll it up on deck or put on a pair of davits that will give you another spot for another solar panel and to store the dinghy from. Look around your marina and you will see what i mean. I have been ill on and off for a while so i will try to get my intro done this week. Gerard.
@@SvGemstar thank you for the advice, yep seems your right was told the same thing when Ian came on board and helped me fix the issue with the furler, we have read placed the blocks as well so should work ok now. Hope you feel better and let me know when the intro goes up 🤜👍
@@SailingdancingbearThanks for the reply. that will be towards the weekend in the cleaning process at present.
I was just about to say the same thing on the furling line
G'day. I know that drones are expensive however it may pay you dividends to buy another one and keep it on board along with a decent vlog camera and spare batteries, for both. At present all I have at the moment is my phone. I have been unwell from time to time as i am also getting ready to go into a base hospital for a hernia at the end of the year. So at present some items are on hold at present. The weather is good at the moment so i should be able to get my first vlog up in a few days. Gerard.

Hi, I’ve just watched your story from the start , very inspirational , and great watching, I’ve just done a two day introduction to sailing at Plas Menai north Wales on their 38 ft yacht, great experience, and loved it, can I ask you, did you start sailing at a local club before you began your adventures, as I’m looking at the best way for me to move forward into sailing , Regards J Please keep the vids coming. Great tv 😊
Hi thank you for the comments. I sailed as a kid in toppers at a club and my parents had a snapdragon 26 but apart from that I started with the comp crew course and then the day skippers. I joined a club so that I had more experienced people around me and it worked out well as met a great guy I became friends with and he has been helping me gain experience. I’ve found that the sailing world is a great community and people are likely to help you when you ask for it. I would recommend taking the courses and doing some mile builders which is a great way to gain some sailing miles and experience.
Hi Terry, great channel, I've only just come across it. Good to see that you're at Benfleet YC as it's great looking at some local views. I don't know if you know about the National Coastwatch Institution (I would like to think so as you did your training courses in The Solent), I am a watchkeeper at Canvey Island NCI located at the Island YC, Canvey Point so you'll always go past us when your going in and out of Benfleet Creek and Hadleigh Ray, anyway if you wanted a radio check or wanted to know what the weather conditions are like upto three miles off The Point going out towards Southend Pier then just call "Canvey Island NCI" on Channel 65 (our working channel) between 0800 and 1600, we also broadcast daily observed weather reports at 1000 and 1400. Can't wait for more videos!!
Hi David that is really helpful to know and I will be sure to radio check next time we passing. Boat is back In tomorrow and we are planning to head over to queen borough if they have space for us. 👍
Terry, my girlfriend and I are very much newbies too so we're enjoying your content. We're working through our DS theory at the moment and are aiming to buy a 28ft BK in the autumn! I'm from Hadleigh originally, and now live in Portsmouth, so it's great seeing what life on the water is like back home on the east coast. I was a Sea Scout in Leigh On Sea 20 years ago so we'll have to plan a trip over there eventually! I notice that Dancing Bear is for sale on Apollo Duck so I hope that means the brokers are just being cheeky with adverts rather than you having it up for sale? Good luck with your journey! We'll be following along.
No that’s the old add I can sure you she is not up for sale. Thank you for the comments and the follow it really helps. We are putting back in this Friday after two weeks of repairs but now she is completely ready for the season ahead. Keep in touch and good luck with the rest of the courses and look forward to seeing you on the water soon.
As mentioned why no life jackets. 'COLD WATER SHOCK' remember you, or your crew end up in the water.
glad i found your channel loved the last 2 episodes, sounds very daunting to a lake/sea dinghy sailor wanting to step up look forward to the next episodes and your journey
Thank you so much for the comments it really helps and keeps us motivated. 🤜👍
as new sailors it would be great to see you starting off by getting into the good practice of wearing life jackets #uselessunlessworn
Liam you are absolutely correct with that one and from now on they will be on. Little note for the next episode 👍
Any boat that is for sale is going cheap, will have a certain amount of work on it. However the plus side is that once the work has been completed, you still got a cheap boat. My Columbia 27 to buy, cost $ 4000 .00 aud The inboard motor is sized was mentioned in the ad so i just bought an 9.9 long shaft Yamaha outboard for $650. plus an bracket $70.00 and that's not all. All $300.00 aud on an basic solar panel small battery to recharge my phone. I will do an intro vlog over the weekend just had an run of some bad weather but starting to come good, so this weekend will be my first vlog on my boat.
I’ll keep a look out for the vlog this weekend 👍

Way to go! It takes alot of courage to launch into that adventure where any help or backup is miles away over water.
Thank you for the comment Russel next one is a little further afield 🙏🤞
This is invaluable, many thanks for this.
Advice on the rigging, rebed the chain plates. To seal them properly, use buytal tape, as it does not go hard like slikaflex. Wrap alittle around the bolts and that will keep out any water that may run in. Congrats to your friend eian on his engagement.I have never been married. Never had the opertunity because its a lifetime commitment and peaple today do not know what that means. Gerard.
Worth seeing how old the rigging is. if the Bottlescrews are that knackered then the rigging itself is probably past the 10 year age mark at which insurance companies like to see it replaced
Thank you for the advice, I bought the boat on the agreement she was in turn key condition and through my lack of knowledge at the time was convinced by the old owner not to have a survey. I’ve got a rigging company coming out this week to tell me the condition and what needs replacing, but I suspect your right and all the rigging will need replacing
@@Sailingdancingbear - Fingers crossed for you. If the rigging does turn out to be dodgy then it would make me think the previous owner knew it would come up on a survey and makes me think what else is there that he didn’t tell me about. Might be worth buying someone at the club a beer and asking them to do a bit of a survey (or even get a survey) so you know what else is wrong.
