Learning in War-Time | C.S. Lewis (1939)
A powerful reflection on approaching our vocations and duties in the face of both political upheaval and eternity. Lewis's sermon is addressed to scholars, and so applies most directly to those studying an art or science, but his wisdom is applicable to anything we might employ ourselves doing which seems dwarfed in significance by either current events or the eschaton. I've been both chastised and encouraged by this, and I hope you are as well.
Originally preached in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Oxford University. Autumn, 1939.

Thanks for putting this series up, hombre. It does rather put one's day to day problems in their place and remind us of what continues to makes the West great. "Salve" from rural Spain, where the olive oil still flows on terraces built under the Romans.

SHARED WITH A FRIEND: We are now in a period where we are actively promoting division and ignorance. However in all times of restriction something new is born and humanity takes the minutest step towards our purpose. What that purpose is is for us to decide. It doesn’t happen in one lifetime but over multitudes. We are part of only a tiny tiny slither of it all. Ego is so corrupting and we particularly in modern western society are taught to believe that we are somehow ‘special’ but that is a lie. We are not just part of the human species but part of the life of this planet. We are the conscience of this place but we struggle to grasp it. I suspect you’ll think I’m on another ramble yet you’ve always shown some interest in what I say. I still think we are in for tough times however I have hope.

Haven't times changed? Dated, inaccurate and pomposity on a stick. It's focused on unimportant aspects but connected to real history so he's not shooting completely in the dark. He just doesn't quite get it. Nonetheless, it's worth watching for his idiosyncrasies and his portrayal of himself more than the weak history he includes. Fascinating on many levels.

I learned recently that this entire series was commissioned by David Attenborough to show off BBC2's new color broadcasting. When seen through that lens, this series makes so much more sense. Some people who haven't seen it (including my younger self) think it's a xenophobic or uncaring to other cultures, but after the first episode the question of who is 'civilized' and who is not is really dropped altogether. Clark made a series on Western art because that was his expertise; the civilization question was really just a device to tie the series together. I find his commentary balanced and refreshingly honest, especially his critique of the obtuseness of modern art. When taken for what it is, a series on art to show the possibilities of color TV, with amazing cinematography and thoughtful commentary, it's an enthralling and still poignant piece of art itself.

Also: narration is a bit vague, but seems to imply that Islam ruined ancient hellenized culture in 50 years in the Mediterranean. Interesting idea, if you think about how the (Eastern) Roman Empire lasted for another 800ish years. While on the other hand: the Western Roman Empire crumbled well before Islam. WTF?
