Stage nine begins with a stroll along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, before climbing up through Uppermill and Dobcross to take in splendid views from Lark Hill. It then joins the Pennine Way for some even more splendid views over Standedge, before dropping down to reach Newhey via Denshaw and a crossing of Crompton Moor.

As a last-minute alternative to a weather-ruined Wainwright-bagging session (not for the first time), Plan B features a 9-mile walk over Blea Tarn Hill and Muncaster Fell between Boot and Ravenglass on a truly grim and miserable day in the Lakes, but finishing with a coastal stroll, a pint in the Ratty Arms, and a return journey by miniature steam train on La'al Ratty.
