THE NEIL PEART EXPERIMENT - by KEN MARY PART 3 - "TOM SAWYER"
This video chronicles the educational purpose of “The Neil Peart Experiment,” performed by session drummer Ken K Mary, and is PART 3. (Neil is one of Ken's drumming influences, and Ken is a great fan Neil's composition and performance.) Here is the experiment: could a session drummer replace the existing drum tracks, that were not performed to a click track, and make the replacement parts almost seamless in tone and performance? Would the new drum tracks be able to lock to the existing musical tracks without any issues? Could the song sound close to the same? Could this be done all in one pass, like the original recordings? PART 4 WILL REVIEW GEAR USED, THE CHALLENGE OF MATCHING TONES FROM ALMOST 45 YEARS AGO, WHAT LESSONS WERE LEARNED, AND A REVIEW OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL AND UNSUCCESSFUL PARTS OF THIS EXPERIMENT.

Nailed it!
Again I am Impressed. You have Neil's subtle timing down. I've nerer heard any drummer quite get those subtle off-timing hits. Nice job.
TY so much Mark. That is very kind of you!🙏
Ive listened to this song so many times over the years and you absolutely killed it! Fantastic job!
TY so much for the very kind words!!🙏
Quite impressive
@@petergriss6131 TY Peter! And have a great holiday season!
Great rendition!!
The most perfect rendition I’ve heard !!!
TY so much Doug!!🙏
MY GOD! fantastic!
TY Andrew!
😂. Damn, dude, I think I got in on the ground floor of a new YT phenomenon! Crazy that this vid is eight years old! Sometimes the YT algorithm rhythm works! Loving this! 👍🙏🏻
TY so much! Yeah, it's been there for awhile!! And I was really not into promoting anything at the time... so there it sits!😆
👍👍
TY Sid!
Killer job on everything, but your Tom Sawyer section was notable. The ghost notes on the cymbals were a little muted but I could tell you were hitting them clean. Maybe adjust the mic or put a mic on it. Lol. Excellent job! Looking forward to more Rush! 2112, Hemispheres, Signals!
Ugh, there is a mic on it, lol.
@@kenkmaryofficial Lol Not a big deal. You don’t have the advantage of an engineer to “perfect” every single detail. You nailed the cymbal work!
😂 Who is this Ken Mary fellow who does such kickass Neil Peart renditions? I’m subscribed! Also saw your YYZ cover, bro. You’ve got it dialed in. I’m 63, played Rush as best as I could on a 5 piece single bass set with three cheap cymbals and a high hat. That was 40-45 years ago. I got pretty damn good with what I had, but you’re killing it! I can see a few places where it’s not exactly as Neil performed it, but that doesn’t matter. It was just as good. You were on point and on time every step of the way. And I never played Neil Peart exactly like he did. I just made sure I kept time with it. Lol You’re a helluva lot better drummer than I am, and I so appreciate seeing you younger drummers giving respect to Neil Peart! Rush was a transforming band in my life as a young man. Neil Peart was the cherry on top for me. Xanadu was always a fun one to play. You might check it out in the future, not to mention Cygnus X1 Books one and two, and La Villa Strangiato. 👍
TY for the kind words. Also, you may mean what he did live later. He changed what he played live compared to what he did on the record, especially after studying with jazz drummers. He added a lot of ghost notes that are not on the recordings. (Listen to the isolated tracks from the actual records, not the isolated drums from live performances.) He changed his drums tones a lot over the years as well. As any artist, he did change over time... but yes, I've been a fan since 1979, and Hemispheres is another of my favorites. Neil's groove on that album is killer. And I am very familiar with all you mentioned as well.
@@kenkmaryofficial Yes, I was referring to the studio version. That’s a good point!
Awesome work! But lose the twirls- there’s a time and place for those- in the middle of the verses not so much- just my stupid opinion
TY for the kind words. I certainly appreciate the self deprecating adjective "stupid" attached to your comment, which I disagree with. I understand that is your opinion, it is not "stupid", and you are certainly entitled to it. Here's mine: obviously, the visual is the most important aspect of any music. (NOT!) Stick tricks have been made famous by some unknown drumming "hacks" like Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Keith Moon, John Bonham, (some of my favorites), every drummer in every marching drum line ever, and, oh yeah, the guy this video is actually about, lol. And let's not mention more recent drummers, like Travis Barker and El Estepario, who has 5 million followers. For me, this is who I am as a player and always has been. Music is art, and as such I won’t ever let someone else dictate to me what type of "paint" I can use. I have to be true to myself. But thanks for listening!!
@@kenkmaryofficialagreed- as an artist I can certainly see the point. I know as I’ve seen Neil too many times- yet still not enough! But if I render a Picasso and then use circles instead of cubes- or realistic Dali painting instead of surreal- is that an experiment of said artist or my interpretation of changes to fit in my box? I’m aware of all the showmanship of above stated drummers- Neil himself was a showman- in the right places. You are an amazing percussionist!! Excellent- I can’t imagine-? I actually can as a former high and highly competitive athlete - so in no way am I trying to shit on this fantastic performance- I am just a massive Peart fan and beyond excited to see you shred this masterpiece! I was just reminded with the stick antics of - and i dislike the term “hair metal “ drumming - peace- continued success- deservedly so- my problem- not yours😁👏👏👍👍👌
Thanks Doug, I dislike that term as well, created to degrade a particular era of music. No worries, but for me I don’t even know I’m doing it until I see the footage back. It’s something I’ve done since I was a kid, so again just part of who I am. And Keith, Buddy, Bonham, Neil… are all part of my early influences.
@@kenkmaryofficialyeah totally! Aldridge has a similar flow atop his stroke! I look forward to seeing you continue to crush

@@jamescarlucci9867 TY so much James!!
"done in one pass, like the originals" That is where the feel of the artist lies and I think some of the best songs were recorded that way, at least the base tracks... you got feel my man. I set up my own mic's and set levels and panning of the toms etc...do you do all that as well?
TY, I tend to agree. The music from the 60s and 70s, warts and all, seem to have a kind of magic to them. A humanness, I guess? It was that time, and I think the business itself was not super “corporate” until a little later in the 80s, when everything started sounding very similar and rather than take chances bands would make compromises artistically to have hits, or at least the greater possibly of having a hit by fitting a radio “format.” That, IMO, was really bad for creativity.
Oh and yes, I set up the engineering on my own drums, mics, heads, tuning, EQ, and compression.
@@kenkmaryofficial agreed. I know some writers can placate to try and make a hit, have to pay the bills, fortunately the deeper cuts on the album lies the creative and a place to expand and take chances. and hey, very cool you interact with us and especially other drummers like me. Rock on ...
@@gilbzmusic7186I agree. There is pressure to make money for sure, and unfortunately that does create less than “original” music… I’ve been in bands that have been guilty of that in the past. And TY, I enjoy interacting when people are respectful and reasonable. Not all are, lol.
Drummers use a metronome. Metronomes use Ken Mary! ;)
Hahahaha, wow, TY for that Julian!! 🙏
Instead of working on the twirling with the left hand maybe work on the ghost notes? Not being a dick, I was just surprised the middle 8 intro snare strokes were played so straight especially with all the flash you were showing with the same hand earlier.
Hahaha, if you have to say "not being a dick," it means you're going to say something that you should have phrased better in the first place. Maybe take time to leave engaging and respectful comments. First, Neil didn't play ghost notes on the recording... go listen to the isolated tracks. He started adding them later on in live versions. For instance, Spirit of Radio is WAY different live than on the original recording. He changed a bunch of things in his playing and approach after studying jazz drummers more closely. The whole idea of this experiment is to match the actual record as closely as possible. And as far as stick tricks, I've had a few comments that amuse me. I always say, "That was something made famous by some unknown hacks like Keith Moon, Buddy Rich, John Bonham, every drummer in every drum line ever in history, and of course the guy that this entire video is about." But thanks for listening.
you did a stellar job playing but getting the drum sound makes it even better, nice
TY Chris! It was fun to try to get them to sound like the original recordings with "all this machinery making modern music," lol. 🙏
Super Impressive! Great Vid!
TY so much Miles, that is greatly appreciated.
❤❤❤ VERY WELL DONE. THANK YOU KEN FROM KEN HOLLEY
@@Justicefordadmom TY so much for the very kind words, Ken. And that’s a great name you have!! 😜
Wow Lifelong fan of Rush, I've seen them 27 times starting with the Perm Waves tour. Neil is the reason I play. You have nailed these songs perfectly . Learning Neils parts is hard on its own, you play them with the perfect feel which is exponentially harder. Like a metronome, bravo sir.

here we are 30 years trying to master the master! Great job, everything he did is impossible to re-due the man was a God!
TY Andrew. IMO one of the three most influential drummers OF ALL TIME. He certainly changed the way drummers think of drums, and created amazing art that will forever stand the test of time. Genius - undeniable.

@@jonhamlinprophet6606 Yeah, he did… depending on the song! And of course the stick tricks are the most important part of any good performance! 😂

@@anthonyleddin8055 I actually do, but I think Neil wrote a few more and sold just a few more records than me, lol.
Very cool, i love my drums sooo much but can't play any rush sadly.. i just end up listening when i try :)
TY, well do not feel bad, he was not an easy drummer to play to. He had some very complex parts, and grooves and rhythms that were usually much more complex than your typical songs of that era!
Very impressive with no click and editing on 1 take!
TY so much Matt!
6 too many stick spins , other than that it was flawless.
Well, TY, but what do you have against stick tricks? Some great drummers made them famous: Keith Moon, Buddy Rich, I've seen footage of Bonham twirling, and of course every rudimental drum line drummer ever, and last but not least the guy that this video is actually about...🤷♀
The production level here is extremely great! Excellent work.

@@kenkmaryofficialyou're very welcome I want to say I saw you play at Cleveland public hall in 87 and I believe Ace frehley opened up for you guys. And by the way your new kit is badass! I've always been a fan of Pearl drums and that gorgeous stainless steel finish that I see you stayed with for almost 40 years. Something about Pearl drums I can't quite put my finger on it besides sounding great they just visually stand out. One day I hope to afford a Master series.Thank you again for personally replying. That's by far the coolest Christmas present I'm going to get this year."Merry Christmas Ken and may you and your loved ones have a happy New Year. CLEVELAND ROCKS!!!😊
@ Yeah, there is something about the pearls! I did go back to stainless steel, as I kind of missed that look. I stupidly sold my old kit for very little money because I was trying to clean out my garage, lol. At the time I had many 5 or 6 enormous drum kits in cases taking up a massive amount of space, lol. But all to say never sell your drums!!! I do love the Masters as well, and have used them on many major Festivals in Europe. They always sound great!! Anyway, I think it was Cincinnati that they made everyone sit down. Is that correct? I do remember Cleveland as well. Was that the venue that had two sides to it? You could face one way in the stage and be in front of 3,000 people and the other would be 10,000. Was that the venue? And again Ty for the very kind words and Mary Christmas and happy holidays to you and your family as well! (I get to say “Mary Christmas” this time of year, lol.)
@kenkmaryofficial yes it was the venue with the two sides and the rococo artwork. Ironically back in 2000 Alice was playing a taste of Cleveland and afterwards I literally walked right into Eric Singer as he was making his way to meet family members who attended the show. I didn't know up until just before the show that he was from Euclid Oh which is a suburb about 10 miles east of Cleveland. And like yourself he was very friendly and a pure gentleman. Now all I got to do is have a beer and a smoke with Neil Smith and I can die a happy man 😂
"not that hard is a song?" Show me then.... How easy it is, with your play thru.
@@mookyyzed2216 Well, it’s probably easier to type that than make a video, lol!
Very well done on both parts you’ve posted. However, I’ve yet to see any drummer on UA-cam or otherwise cover the exact drumming of both albums Hemispeheres and more difficulty in covering Farewell to Kings the song as well as the album. Care to give Farewell to Kings a whirl?
@@NealVan TY Neal. I certainly could, but I wouldn’t want to do it again under these parameters: one pass, no punching in, no editing and locking to tracks that are already down. This was a bit more work than I anticipated, lol.
And I like the LeStudio T-shirt that Ken was wearing
TY Robert! A good friend, Rich Bloom, gave that to me!
@ It’s disappointing that there won’t be any more music created there at LeStudio in Morin Heights since the studio burned down and it doesn’t look like it’s going to be rebuilt
@ Absolutely, what an iconic studio, and so many more bands recorded there. April Wine, The Police, Queensryche, Nazareth, David Bowie just to name a few. I actually have a small piece of the flooring from the studio sent to me by a good friend!

@@Mark_T_23 TY Mark. I know a couple people on the inside, and I’m pretty sure they are? But again, TY so much for the thought!! 🙏
@@kenkmaryofficial, I know that Geddy, Alex and Niel have said that if any one member of the band leaves, Rush done. I understand that. Those were three incredible musicians. We are so lucky that they found each other. They continued to push themselves to produce more technical and great music. They did their own music and hoped people would listen. They were the best trio ever. I believe Neil is a fantastic drummer not only because of his technical proficiency but because of his creativity. He only added fills when the overall sond needed it to continue on. Most times to the next phrase. Signed, Amature drummer.
@@Mark_T_23 I agree completely. And Neil's composition changed the way drummers look at their parts. I think he affected almost every drummer today, either directly or indirectly. A true creative genius.

Another stellar performance-and crisp sounding. I've listened to the isolated drum track so often and like to think I know it quite well. The main body of the song isn't too difficult but it is a memory test as Neil was never one for repeating fills, the mid section is a real test though as there's so many ghost notes in there that you'd swear the snare was haunted.
