A Crash Course on LEL Sensor Readings (aka How Not to Die)
People get their readings and percentages confused when they use LEL sensors; here is a crash course of how to interpret the readings.
Here is a longer video on the basic functioning of a gas detector and how the LEL sensor actually works:

A Crash Course in Oxidizers and How They Accelerate Fires
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
Oxidizers technically steal electrons from other atoms and molecules, but you can think of them as adding way more oxygen to a fire. Oxidizers are not in themselves flammable (except for class 5.2 oxidizers like organic peroxides) but in their presence substances that ordinarily wouldn’t burn become able to burn, and things that are already able to burn become able to burn MUCH faster.

    Calcium hypochlorite is actually a very strong oxidizer, it just has a smaller “Oxygen capacity” which means fewer oxygen would be released (fewer electrons it will accept) for a given mass.

    The first detector going into an unknown should be wet pH paper on a stick. If it turns red or blue, do not bring in your multigas meter. The corrosive atmosphere will damage the electronics, turing it into a brick.

    A man died near me because the fire service was trying to figure out what the noxious gas was. they stopped people trying to save him rather than just doing their job, common sense not so common.

      I don't know the full situation, but something during the incident told them not to run in. In many confined space emergencies, more rescuers die than victims because they run in. I've handled chemical suicides and would not run in unless the victim shows sign of movement.

    ERG says structural firefighter gear and SCBA is adequate for response. And given the main route of exposure is inhalation, and that alpha and beta particles don't travel very far or penetrate much, I can agree with this. Why chose level A PPE instead of that, or even go with level B? Better mobility, less stress, etc.?

    • @toxichank6960
      @toxichank6960 Рік тому

      I agree with you. Level A is worthless in this situation, and may be more a hazard. Level C to deal with potential surface contamination. Many medical radionuclides are gamma emitters and will penetrate FF gear, Level A, Level B or C. When I teach RAD to hazmat tech, I tell them a RAD job is easiest to deal with. You can measure your dose, contamination and shield if needed. Less easier with chemicals, no can do with biologicals.
