When he wrote Truly, he was in love. When he wrote I Knew I Loved You, he wasn't (going through a divorce).

Both songs were composed in entirely different circumstances. In the words of Darren Hayes: I Knew I Loved You was a song created at a time when he felt wounded by love; it was a calculated effort because SG's record company wanted them to do a record that would be a follow-up to Truly Madly Deeply. They composed it in 40 minutes of annoyance at the demands of their record company... which was very happy with the end result. 'Truly Madly Deeply' was more difficult to compose, yet more sincere. It was born from the recording sessions Darren and Daniel did in Sydney throughout 1996/97. It was Darren's first time ever away from his family and from his native Brisbane: the longing for his family and wife inspired him to write Truly Madly Deeply. So one was inspired by genuine love and feelings, while the other wasn't.
