What is the significance of Cyp450 enzyme?
Cytochromes are proteins belonging in superfamilies containing heme as a cofactor. Therefore, they are called hemoproteins and are used as substrates in enzymatic reactions.
The term “P450” is issued from the spectrophotometric peak obtained at the maximum optic density of the enzyme (450 nm) when it is in its reduced state associated with carbon monoxide.
It is estimated that humans harbor 30 CYP enzymes which are involved in drug metabolism and which belong to the families 1-4 (4). However, 90% of drug oxidation seems to be related to six main enzymes: CYP 2D6, 2C9, 1A2, 2C19, 2E1, and 3A4.
