Disabling dynamics
MuseScore normally plays the dynamics in your scores with great accuracy, following the markings like mp and ff and so forth as well as crescendos and diminuendos. Sometimes, though, you just want to hear the notes of a score without all of that. Especially for very quiet passages, you may want them to play at a "normal" volume for demonstration or error-checking purposes. In this video post, I demonstrate how to temporarily disable the playback of dynamics in MuseScore Studio, so that everything plays at a constant volume.

Flat nine chords in Beethoven
Переглядів 12814 годин тому
Dominant seventh chords provide some of the best opportunities to add color tones such as ninths and thirteenths. Sometimes we may also want to alter those color tones - for example, b9, b13, #11, and #9. The b9 in particular is very much associated with jazz, and yet has a long history of use in classical music. In this video post, I show an example from Beethoven's Waldstein piano sonata, dis...
Chord symbol playback - Jazz style
Переглядів 430День тому
MuseScore plays chord symbols by default using a pretty rudimentary algorithm and a very literal voicing. It works well enough for songs built on simple triads and a few seventh chords, but it doesn't sound as good for jazz. Luckily, there are some optional settings you can use that allow MuseScore to come closer to how a jazz musician might interpret the chords. In this video post, I show you ...
The many faces of major sixth chords
Переглядів 491День тому
Major sixth chords are found often in jazz fakebooks, but looks can be a little deceiving. Just because you see a major sixth chord, that doesn't always mean you should literally play it that way. In practice, major sixth and major seventh chords are often used interchangeably. In this video post, I discuss the most common situations where sixth chords are called for and why they are specified ...
Why appoggiaturas?
Переглядів 19214 днів тому
One of the definitions of the term "appoggiatura" is a type of ornament - a slow "grace" note that typically takes half the value of the following note - often found in Baroque and Classical music. If it is played in a specific rhythm, why would composers choose to notate it as a grace note, rather than writing out the rhythm explicitly. In this video post, I explore the use of the appoggiatura...
Harmonizing 3-2-1
Переглядів 23114 днів тому
One of the most common melodic motifs consists of scale degrees 3-2-1 (mi-re-do), especially at the end of a phrase. The traditional classical harmonization of this is I64-V7-I, but in worlds of jazz and popular music, other harmonizations are more common. In this video post, I show how this melody can be harmonized with ii7-V7-I or II7-V7-I. Outside Shore Music is the home of great resources l...

Grace note types
Переглядів 20714 днів тому
MuseScore Studio supports several types of grace notes. These include two types of grace notes that are played before the main note: the short "crushed" notes called acciaccaturas that most people think of as grace notes, as well as longer appoggiaturas that are often found in Baroque and Classical music. There are also grace notes played after the main note, used primarily as trill endings. In...
Adding space below the title

The default amount of space works well for many scores, and MuseScore will automatically add more to avoid collisions. Syncopating a melody
Переглядів 329Місяць тому
One of the defining features of jazz - and most popular styles of music for the past century or more - is the use of syncopation. • @OutsideShoreMusic
      @OutsideShoreMusic 6 днів тому

      If by "Software-Manager" you are referring to some sort of unofficial third-party build - like one provides by a distribution or repository maintainer - those are not supported and very often contains problems due to improper build/packing procedures, plus they are often quite out of date.l The AppImage provided by the MuseScore team directly is the only supported build for Linux. if you have issues once you download and install that build, then you can try asking for help on the official Support forum at musescore.org. The sizes of GUI elements is determined based on your OS settings and in particular your monitor DPI and scaling factors set by your window manager, and there are ways of overriding those if they aren't being communicated properly. But the best way to do that will depend on the specifics of your system and which elements are sized incorrectly, so you'll want to provide more detail in your forum post. Chances are good, though, that the AppImage will just work.

    Whats your thoughts on using a 6/9 instead of 6, since its a very pretty chord and most piano snd guitar players like to use. Also (lol) for your brazil, as a brazilian. Sounds more like calypso or salsa

    • @OutsideShoreMusic
      @OutsideShoreMusic 9 днів тому

      Certainly, in actually *playing* the chord, including a ninth is pretty standard, whether you play the chord with a sixth or major seventh or both or neither. Fakebooks typically don't include that level of voicing detail - they normally just call for C6 or Cmaj7. Just as most dominant chords are notated simply as G7 or whatever, but with the understanding you might voice them with a ninth or thirteenth and might use alterations. As for the song "Brazil" and that accompaniment figure, I've always been curious, so I just did a little research. Of course, the song itself really is Brazilian, by Ary Barrasso. But many popular recordings/arrangements of it bring in other elements for sure. The specific accompaniment pattern I mention and play, though, does appear to go back to the first recorded arrangement by Radamés Gnattali (sung by Francisco Alves).

      Probably it’s a sample rate mismatch between MuseScore and your audio driver. Try changing MuseScore’s to 48 kHz in edit / preferences / audio & MIDI. Or try a different audio system on the Linux side - there are many available depending on your distribution and some work better with MuseScore by default than other. But if it’s a Chromebook using the default distribution (Debian), the sample rate should be all you need. Or at most you might need to increase the buffer size in that same dialog.

      Probably there is a way to accomplish what you want to letting the note "live" on the middle staff, but I'd recommend asking for help on the official support forum where you can attach the score itself and explain in more detail what you want to do. Then people can offer more direct suggestions, and if it seems there would be value in extending the cross-staff notation to support moving across multiple staves, the case would make a good real-world example to include in a formal feature request on GitHub.

    It's nice if you already have the score completely written in your mind so you can tap it all out one key a time, while simultaneously clicking the on/off button to add said notes *exactly* as desired. But if one thing doesn't fit the scheme exactly, your entire piece (or section) is off. For example, you can't just add even one note; MuseScore will change the duration of every note around it and even delete some of your transcribed notes. (Grr.) Musescore adds rests to the rest of the measure, then it won't allow you to add another note to the measure. It will add the note to the *next* measure, and then the MuseScore script is thrown off again. You have to manually add a measure, add the desired note, then manually join the measures, then delete the rests added by MuseScore, then basically transcribe the notes again. Once you get all the fixes done it's nice to hear the playback, but it took me literally ten hours to transcribe a simple, 20-measure, one-part song. That can't be right.

    • @OutsideShoreMusic
      @OutsideShoreMusic 28 днів тому

      Sorry to hear you are having trouble! Actually, moving notes is quite easy, just cut and paste. But it’s true that if you are still at the experimenting stage, notation software usually isn’t the right tool. Instead consider working out the ideas at your instrument and/or with pencil and paper to get a clearer idea of what you want to notate. Shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to transcribe a simple 20-measure song, and no more than a couple more minutes to enter it into MuseScore from there. Trying to do it backwards - first entering notes into notation software, then figuring what the notes really should be - is always going to be much much less efficient.

      It's not necessarily the best - as I mention at the beginning, there is anothers way involving multiple voices and showing/hiding them individually in custom parts, and this is more useful if you plan on continually making edits. See the Handbook section on parts in the Basics chapter for more on that.

    it doesn't make sense for a didactic piece like that sonatina to include articulatoins pedaling phrasing. its just a little ditty to teach basic skills

    "So if I use the left curly brace.....'" What are you talking about? Where is the left curly brace? Why do these guys assume that we all know where the left curly brace is?? I have never heard that term

      @@redrubeNYC it’s one of the standard keys on most computer keyboards. Maybe it goes by a different term in your region of the world? It looks like this - { - and it is normally located about the square bracket [ on US QWERTY keyboards.

      Are you sure you have downloaded and installed MuseScore 4? If you';re just looking at a website in your web broser, it indeed won't look like MuseScore 4 - it will look like a website :-). To get MuseScore 4, you do go to a website - musescore.org, not musescore.com - and click the Download button. Then follow the instructions from there. From then on you don't use the web site, you open the program on your computer.

    I was wondering if I could get help. I've transcribed Steely Dan's 'Kid Charlemagne' and the very, very odd thing is that it doesn't play a particular bend. YET- if I copy that measure to the next measure, it plays! What I have noticed is that this anomaly occurs at the start of the second page of the score! If anyone could give me a clue as to what the heck is going on, please do let me know. Thank you. I could upload an MP4 if needed.

      Hello! The best place to get free help using MuseScore Studio is the support forum at musescore.org. If you attach your score there and give precise steps to reproduce the problem, someone should be able to assist. I also provide premium support services to people enrolled in my Mastering MuseScore 4 course (see the description above for more info)

    It’s interesting to watch how everything works so nicely on this tutorial. When I actually try to do anything real, it’s so frustrating that I want to hurl a brick through the screen. Nothing works the way it is supposed to. I can’t get in a single measure without reaching a total impasse. I’m going to look for something a little more straightforward, even if it’s expensive.

      Sorry to hear you’re having trouble! It really does work as simply as this demonstration shows, so if you find yourself having trouble, please be sure to read more of the Handbook and/or check out my online course, and ask questions in the Support forum on MuseScore.org if you have trouble. Music notation is complex, so all notation software takes time to learn well. spending more money isn’t the answer - being patient and taking the time needed to learn it is!

    Hello, I get to point 3:50 in the video, and when I press enter it tells me “no such file or directory” and tells me “things to check: do the files exist and do you have the right privileges” have you any idea of what I’m doing wrong ? Thank you !

      If the “chmod” succeeded but the next command failed, then you have a typo in that next command. Make it is is *precisely* the same as what I show - slash not balkcslash, capitalization matters, spaces exactly and only where they are in my example, etc.

      @@OutsideShoreMusicThank you for your very fast response, I’ll say I’ve taken longer to respond as I’ve been trying so much to get this to work and have come out with nothing. Today I’m even at a point where for some reason I’m not able to save the files into the Linux folder and therefore can’t open the files in the terminal window, I’ve also checked and I’m pretty certain that I typed things correctly. I’m sorry to be a nuisance but do you have have any idea as to what I should do? I’ve also tried freeing space so that I can use the Linux folder. Thank you !

      @@macmonahan8070 If youve run out of space on your Chromebook, you'll need to address first of course. If you need helping doing that, I recommend asking for help in a general Chromebook forum somewhere. There's a good one on Reddit, but probably others too. But once you have that straightened out, then ss I said, if the chmod command succeeds with no error, there is no possible explanation for the next command failing other than a typo. So if you need further help at that point, please ask in the official MuseScore Studio support forum at musescore.org and attach a screenshot of your terminal window showing you executing those commands and what their output is. Then we can understand and assist better.
