Tom's Datsun Garage
Приєднався 25 сер 2007
Primarily, I aim to document the ins and outs of the restoration and modification of my 1971 Datsun 240Z, as well as cover some tools and techniques used during the process. This is a Datsun friendly space, and other Datsuns and Datsun specific information will be featured.
This Poor '72 240 Z Has A Rough Past, But Makes A Good Parts Car For My '71 240 Z.
In this video, I finally go into detail about why this car is not a good candidate for restoration before I dismantle it.

I change plans, perhaps against my better judgement given the time of year, to get the parts car into the garage to ease disassembly. I hope to NOT regret it.

I cover how to replace the rear shock absorbers, what tools needed and how to fix a noisy blower fan. These processes will be similar for the Pulsars of this vintage as well.

At an autocross event this past weekend, This Datsun stole the show! It was the only Datsun in attendance, and the first roadster I have seen in person up close since the 2010 Mitty event. The owner and his son were also super cool.

I got a 1985 Nissan Sentra 4dr sedan, automatic trans, with 128k miles runs and drives and stops too, but yours looks great condition i wish i had a garage i do put my 85 in the garage too out of the weather. Yours runs smoother than mine since mine needs a new cylinder head because from the previous owners I brought it from ruin the valves on the top head on the engine from broken timing or timing jump a tooth or two. Hard to get parts for these old beautiful cars, All old cars deserve a second chance in life.
I had a bronze colored one , loved it , think it was an automatic, remember it didn’t have flip up lights. Sunroof I think. Nice running little car , had a lot of miles , sold it at auction , had a trunk rack. Great memories. Thanks for sharing.😊 subscribed.
Pasa el manuel por favor.
I don't have a digital copy, otherwise I'd gladly send it.
When redoing my Z I do spend a lot of time at the wire wheel - spray painting too.
Yeah, this is definitely not fun. Especially because I had already done this last year!
Thanks for the update Tom ... With a mind on the current cost of labor rates it's hard to imagine a business case for such an elaborate repair but in the past the threshold for repair vs scrap must have been different. While the quality of those repairs are suspect, you can visualize the creativity required to pull them off. While you were pointing out the various pieces in that parts car, the old Johnny Cash song titled 'One Piece at a Time' was playing in the back of my head. Thanks again for some of the best and most genuine content on UA-cam..
Thank you, Paul! I appreciate the kind words!
For a datsun?
Yep. Hardware prep for re plating. The Hardware came from my parts car.
Wow! Look at the space now that the car is out 👏👏. Now the fun starts!
This is genius . Bravo 😂😂
😂😂 love it!!!
😂😂 you did it, you added Yakety sax. I shall christen this car as Napoleon Blownapart
😂😂😂
Storage for the time being.
Where you send the engine to?
Tom, can I buy the turn signal switch?
After I am certain that I have everything I need for my '71, I will likely sell off whatever I didn't use.
FrankenZ!!!! Ridiculous what people do to cars 😢🧟♂️
Crazy!
😂 you still got my AMC logo I vandalized your dry erase board with.
Erasing art is a crime!
Glad to see you got the parts car Tom! Kirk
Thank you! It's been months of pain waiting.
Good information there. You are very fortunate to be able to have a non running car in the driveway. I had several parts cars behind a fence on my property and some one complained. Moving them to a storage place this week. Not real happy about it.
Man that sucks! Yeah I am pretty fortunate. I moved it inside my garage in the next video , so I can dismantle it. I still need to figure out where to store the removed parts!
I worked for a dealer in the "Datsun" era that eventually went to Nissan. One of the oddities of those cars is they use weird hardware. They give you an 8 mm thread, but the nut size will be 12 mm or 14 mm, instead of the traditional 13 mm. (off the shelf size) Back when we had a lot of the 210 / 310 series, we joked that a true dealer mechanic can name the only place they used a 13 mm head on the entire car. (Hint: near the water pump) Many times traditional replacements don't fit where the OEM fastener once was. BTW, on my personal long term projects I always got a box of zip-loc bags and marked where they came from. Nice to know they all went to the RF door, LF fender, (etc) so you can see where something is missing.
Man, up here in the Salt Belt, that would be described as a solid original shell, not a "bits donor". 😱
I'm from Pennsylvania, and totally get that. Wait until I upload the video after the upcoming one! You may change your mind!
I've always wanted to buy a parts car and do exactly what you are doing. The toughest thing is figuring out where to put all those parts ? I look forward to seeing your future posts. Also, I'm glad you have a great friend like Dave to help you out. I assume it was a round trip which means 2X the miles.
Yes, I still need to figure out storage. Dave drove the truck out to Colorado, while I flew out, and we both drove back.
Nothing like some automotive archeology. 😎
You know it! Fascinating at times. Vehicles have histories good and bad.
you cant bepositive thats all original to a 50-60 year old car.. i lose nuts and bolts and other random crap in my cars and classic cars all the time and theyre deff NOT original ones
True. I am a bit familiar with the Datsun 240Z, and I will be matching everything up to my detailed pictures from my 1971 to verify!
Nice Z!!! I just bought a 70 in pieces. someone took it to pieces.
Thanks! This one was taken apart as well. My 71 Z is WAY nicer! Stay tuned for that one going back together!
I saved every bolt I could when I parted out my 73 gremlin. You’re right little intricate parts can be extremely hard to find if you lose them. Also, I think everyone would like to see you tear the car down maybe a time lapse segment of the car coming all apart?
I will try to figure out how to make that happen!!
That shell looks pretty clean. Once your done parting it out I hope someone has a use for the chassis.
Trust me, looks are deceiving. I am going to go over this car in detail before disassembling it, and all will be revealed. Stay tuned!
I’m the first viewer!
I appreciate that!! ❤️
congrats on your Z purchase! That's awesome that you road tripped that far to get a 240Z! Well worth it.
Thank you!
🎉🎉 hooray glad it was a successful trip!
Thank you!!!!
Congrats man, though I LOL’d at the shot of Dave zonked with that neck pillow 😂
Have you tried Z car Depot? They have complete stainless steel hardware kits for the 240Z.
I love this car model, owned a 240Z model year 1973, in 1980 the funnest car I have owned. It will be fun to follow you Tom with kind regards from Sweden
That's awesome, and I agree. Thank you for the kind words.
Nice little machine! I owned an early 80's hatchback back in the late 90's. I liked that little thing. Kinda wish I still had her. Got ripped off right from my driveway though and trashed. 😡😔 Reliable and comfortable actually. I thought they werent too bad from a performance stand point. No muscle car but for a little 4 banger, pretty good. Nice upgrades you made on yours.
Wow, that's awful it got taken and trashed! Thank you for the kind words
Nice video. Its always fun seeing a car running through an Autocross course. From the video, it appears like you were working one of the corners at the event. I hope you have a chance to run one of your cars. Hope to see at one of these events in the future.
I was working at the first station! Our group already ran, and we switched. This was my first auto cross ever. The Miata did great!
Awesome!!
Awesome Tom! Fantastic find, having a great network pays off! Can't wait! - AJ
Nice looking car back in the day.Like you I would buy one in a heartbeat if they still made them.Saw a base 1983 notchback in brown with brown cloth and automatic at an auction in Florida last year.If it was an SL version with a 5 speed I would of threw a bid out there.
this is why i don't restore cars ..... it take years and alot of money ..... i wish a had a team and i could do it fast and have the money where i can buy anything and do anything i want ..... plus a garage where i can do it in
Yeah it's definitely a labor of love, and not for everyone. I am hoping I can see this through to completion.
Thanks for sharing your story, love the channel and the other videos you've posted :)
Thank you for the kind words! I really appreciate that! I will be sharing an update soon.
Great video I have a 260Z with 39k original miles as the original owner. My situation was that I got scammed by a Craig's list fraudster this butthead ran off with the majority of the projects restoration funds and left me with a substandard roller/paintjob . This guy then ran off and laughed he was or could not be sued since he had no assets (he transferred everything he had away from himself). So it is nice to see some one win. I had a question where did you get your rotisserie? I am from the Baltimore area and have always loved Zs. Bill
Thanks Bill. That is horrible to hear about your 260Z. I sure hope you can get it made whole again. Keep watching the other videos and you'll see that UPS screwed me over REALLY BAD. But I will be sharing an update soon!
Thank you! I am glad you are enjoying it! I do have a small but very positive update coming soon. Stay tuned!
Love the content and the progress. Keep it up! Blue on blue is rare.

I forgot about the little chime noise. Our first "real" car, with air conditioning and payments, was a 1982 Datsun/Nissan Sentra hatchback. It was five years old when we bought it, and it was one of the first steps into civilian life when I mustered out of the Army. It was the beginnings of living a middle class life. It lasted until the very first day when we moved into our first home three years later. We were counting on that $127 car payment being gone so we could make the mortgage. On to plan "B" when the transmission failed. Now we had a house and a car payment. We made it! It's hard to believe that was 34 years ago! Fond memories of a new life, one with promise and hope, and a little bell reminding me to put on my seat belt!
Thank you for sharing your story! These cars were bought, used and thrown away, and were a part of many people's daily lives for years. Un-sung heroes. Sports cars get all of the glory, but these were driven every single day, helping people get to work and build their lives. Very few still exist today and stories like yours make me glad to be able to share my cars like this!
I have a similar story. I use to own a VW 78 Scirocco hatchback. I got a 1.8 GTI motor in the back from a junkyard. Another time put a Opel GT motor in back for my friend also, drove it to his house. Getting stuff like that in was easy, getting the stuff out was allot harder. The trunk area was lower. Really hard lifting an engine out.
Its amazing what hatchbacks can do! They are the true first sport/utility!
Wow that was my first one too. I also had an Orange one. Wow was that car fast!! and Fun.
Tom: This is some of the finest content I've come across on UA-cam. It's genuine, heartfelt and properly balanced with photos and commentary. The endeavor you have undertaken is the dream of many auto enthusiasts and I thank you for including us in the journey. I'm not alone in wishing you well on the rest of the project. I also should reiterate the quality of your UA-cam video is such that I believe you could be a career documentarian! It was great to speak with you in person at the Elliott show and thank you again for mentioning your video endeavor. I've subscribed and look forward to the rest of the project. Regards Paul
Thank you for your kind words! It was very nice to meet you also. I do have 2 more short "history" videos left, but then not long afterwards, there should be a new video out regarding the 240Z. Stay tuned!
Keen eye! That is the feature in my next video! Stay tuned!
$50 bucks!!! I saw a red Z across the street?
Love the history man!
Thank you sir! A little more to come!
