A Walt Disney Cartoon – Blame It on the Samba (1948) – 1955 RKO reissue titles
The 1955 RKO reissue titles to Blame It on the Samba (originally part of Melody Time) are already - in various forms - available on UA-cam, of course. This scan comes from a 16mm Fuji print dated 1977, and it’s likely not an official Disney release, as the splices you see near the end (when the Aracuan moves around the frame) are actually in the print, likely carried over from the 35mm source. Anyway, there are several interesting things to note about this version: It’s actually not labelled as a Donald Duck short like Lake Titicaca and Aquarela do Brasil, it has unique art on both the opening and the closing titles - and the end is different from Melody Time, where the Aracuan pops his head back out from the iris out.

Donald Duck - Donald’s Dilemma (1947) - original RKO Radio Pictures titles
Переглядів 3,5 тис.День тому
Donald’s Dilemma (1947) was the first short to feature Donald’s theme song, known simply as the “Donald Duck Song”. When I handed in this 16mm Technicolor blue-track print (made shortly after the short’s original theatrical release) for scanning, I was curious to know if the theme in this original version was different from the Buena Vista reissue. As it turned out, the reissue kept the origina...

These early 1950s non-theatrical titles - a design commonly referred to as “burlap” or “burlap note swirl” - to Mickey in Arabia (1932) interestingly keeps the MPPDA (here MPAA) logo from the original Columbia titles. This and Musical Farmer (1932) were likely the only Disney shorts distributed by Columbia to feature the MPPDA logo in their original titles. Scanned from a 16mm Kodak UK print da...

This is the original opening and closing titles to Mickey in Arabia (1932), the last Disney short to be distributed by Columbia. One interesting thing here is the presence of the MPPDA logo (below the sponge under the blackboard), even though it’s almost blurred-out in this (likely unofficial) 16mm Kodak UK print dated 1948. The soundtrack is borrowed from the Treasures dvd, as this print was s...

El Gaucho Goofy, originally part of Saludos Amigos (1942), was released as a stand-alone short in 1955 - one and a half year after the original RKO Goofy series had ended. I have previously shared the Buena Vista re-release titles (which keep the title card and closing titles seen here). The RKO logo at start was not included on this rather faded Kodak SP print dated 1976, but I have reinstated...

While the original RKO titles to Window Cleaners (1940) were seen on several vhs and laserdisc releases in the 1980s, this nice 16mm Technicolor print from the UK is certainly an improvement. This was the first Disney short to have the MPPDA certificate placed on the title card - a practice that lasted until early 1942.

I’ve uploaded the original title card to The Ugly Duckling (1939) before, as one of the stills included in the “Mickey Mouse Viewer” film strips. Here are finally the complete RKO opening and closing titles, scanned from a Technicolor 16mm print. As you can see, the logo card in this final Silly Symphony still carries the same design as in RKO’s first release in the series (The Old Mill, 1937)....

The original titles to Mickey’s Good Deed (1932) opens with the first use of the small Mickey headshot (replacing “Exploding Mickey”) - and then snow gradually starts falling on the titles, matching the opening scene. Johnnie Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet from Make Mine Music (1946) was reissued by RKO as a stand-alone short in 1954. The RKO logo was omitted when this 16mm Eastman print was made in 1974, and today the colours have turned mostly purple - but it’s still nice that this version exists, I think.

I haven't seen Melody Time but have heard about all the shorts within. I really feel it was a misstep to put this segment in the movie. It should have been a short released by itself. It was planned for a sequel to Three Caballeros, but when it was canceled it was put in Melody Time. It just sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the others.

In the late 1930s to the early 1940s, Donald, Mickey and Goofy (on screen as well as in newspaper comics) were sometimes, when it fit the story, depicted as actors at the Walt Disney Studio and living in Hollywood. This idea was later picked up again in the Disneyland TV series, were Walt often referred to them (especially Donald) as actors employed by him.

@@DanielCraft195 1973 is certainly not correct. The first colour shorts to have their original titles replaced with the burlap note swirl titles were Clock Cleaners, Bone Trouble, and Donald and Pluto. This happened sometime in 1952, when these three shorts were picked out for non-theatrical distribution through Disney’s newly-started 16mm department. @@DanielCraft195 Yes, Erik's information is true and well researched; it's not just a theory. There are lots of documents (adverts and catalogues) from the 1950s which announce and list those colour cartoons, now commonly seen with their 'burlap note swirl' titles, for home rental. I can think of 11 colour cartoons which ended up with the burlap note swirl titles. As for the black and white shorts, loads of them ended up with these titles (perhaps all of the Columbia and UA B&Ws and a chunk of the earlier sound shorts too?). Some of them aired with these titles on 1950s episodes of the Mickey Mouse Club. I've also seen a few cels with the block lettering titles (that would have been photographed over the burlap note swirl background) appear in an online auction too (the auction house listed them as being from circa 1950s so it seems they didn't have info on the exact year).
