Underrated SNES Horror Games | Retro Reviews
Halloween and horror games go hand-in-hand for me, and this video covers the various Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) games that I decided to play during this year's Halloween, Fall/Autumn season (2024). I had been playing a lot of Sega Genesis and PS1 stuff recently so I figured I should tackle a system that I haven't talked about much yet on this channel (SNES). I also decided to turn it into somewhat of a countdown list, highlighting and reviewing three games that I would recommend, and three more that I would suggest avoiding. All of the gameplay content is from my own playthroughs and I make sure to back-up my examples with footage where I can.
Keep in mind that these ARE NOT the only games that I would consider horror on the SNES, and just because I didn't mention a game, doesn't mean that I wouldn't consider it a good game necessarily. For example I didn't mention Alien 3 a single time in this video, but it's a great SNES horror game. Also, these aren't all what I would describe as "obscure gems" like I covered in my Top 10 Sega Genesis video last year, though I tried my best to pick the ones that are more "underrated."
Initially I only wanted to do short 60 second reviews and cover more, but the SNES doesn't really have THAT many games that could be called horror that aren't super well known already (such as Doom, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, the Castlevania games). So I decided to narrow the list down some and give a more detailed review, that way you can really decide for yourself if it is a game that you would like to try out or not. In the end it ended up being longer than I wanted it (as is par for the course with me), but hopefully that can be seen as a good thing from some people. If you would like to learn how to play some of these games on your PC, I have linked some of my RetroArch tutorials below to help you get started.
Thanks for watching, Happy Halloween!

watching this in 2025, thanks my guy, super helpful! Now I'm off to spend my evening renaming all my Dreamcast games in RA desktop :D
I've ambernic 406v trying to charge the 2 disc, it just said wrong disc and then i ear the music and the screen is black, nothing happen, if I open the 2 disc game it works but i dont have the save game in there so i cant go throw. THE GAME IS FF9 I DID WHAT YOU TOLD US, ALSO PUTTING THE SBI FILES TO RUN IT. What should i do? Thanks you
Sorry but this tutorial was only for PC RetroArch, handhelds and other versions can require very different things. I personally don't have any experience with a 406v or any Anbernic stuff. I will say though, that I have a Miyoo Mini Plus handheld and it required me to create individual folders in a specific place and then create another special folder where I put all of the multidisc games. The m3u was also formatted completely differently and I had to do a bunch of weird stuff like reverse the slashes from a blackslash to a forward-slash or vice versa, it was actually a pretty big headache and not like this video at all. I learned how to do all of that on the Miyoo reddit so honestly the best bet I can think of is to either find an in depth document on the Operating System that your Anbernic uses, or search a discord or subreddit for the topic or multi discs or m3u. I'm sure there IS a way to do it but everything is so different that I would literally just be stabbing the dark. Good luck and I am sorry I am not more help to ya. Edit: Here is the reddit thread I made when I was having issues on Miyoo and what I ended up doing (not saying you should try this, it might be different for you, but you can see how the process differs). www.reddit.com/r/MiyooMini/comments/1382nz5/m3u_formatting_for_separate_folders_help_please/
How you have bin n cue for ps1 n still only loads 1. With no extra tracks
Hmm, I'm not 100% sure I understand the question. I will try my best to give some information though and maybe that will clear it up, I apologize if any of this is not exactly what you were asking. I will include some image examples for you. Bin/Cue files can come as a single Bin and a single cue, OR as a single cue and multiple bin files, it just depends on how the file is encoded/created and the contents of it. For example take a look at this example of Spyro - Year of the Dragon: i.imgur.com/pJxP3hQ.png . You can see that it is just a single bin and cue. Now take a look at this example of Ogre Battle - Limited Edition: i.imgur.com/pR8ZhJ8.png . You can see here that THIS game has MULTIPLE bin tracks unlike the other example. Both of these games are only a single disc, however one of them has multiple Bin tracks while one only has a single bin. Both of these games should behave THE EXACT same way as far as RetroArch and the emulator core is concerned and it shouldn't matter that one of them has multiple tracks (it should never come into play since the cue file handles all of this). Just pretend that ALL games only have a single bin for the most part, even if it has many. When you go to import these games into your RetroArch library, you can do a manual scan of them (like this here: i.imgur.com/VWmwskf.png ). When you fill in the scan information, the content directory is wherever you have these folders containing your games (yours will be different than mine), make sure to select the system type (playstation 1 in this example), you can select a default core too, but be sure under "File extensions" to type out "cue," your manual scan should look something like this: i.imgur.com/RSiWiLI.png . Using the two game examples from earlier, I placed both Spyro and Ogre Battle in their own folder (remember one has multiple bin tracks and one only has a single track but this doesnt matter), and I am able to import both into a fresh RetroArch using the method I just described: i.imgur.com/wZxgom9.png . From here you can just launch either game and it will load right up (if you have the correct core and bios files for PS1 games ofc). So basically just ignore the fact that some games have multiple tracks, this shouldn't matter. Things get a little more complicated when you have a game with multiple discs like Final Fantasy VII-IX or Metal Gear Solid and you will likely want to use m3u files, I have a video covering this information here: ua-cam.com/video/ePE6WYSfdis/v-deo.html I will say that since making these videos I have actually moved away from Bin/cue files in general and now basically ONLY use CHD files for my CD roms. CHD files are MUCH easier to use since they are generally only a single file and you don't have to worry about having both a bin/cue and multiple tracks, PLUS the size is usually much smaller. You should definitely look into CHD files for any CD based games. I will likely be making a video on CHD and how to convert your bin/cue files into CHD quickly in the near future. Good luck, hopefully this helped some.
Excellent video holy shit where did you find these games? 😂
thank you it helped me
Doing this with chd format is even easier! Lol chd for life!
For sure! I have since converted every disc file I have into CHD myself. I plan on doing a more up to date version of this vid in the near future and will be sure to cover it.
So what is i comprewss bin abd cue into chd files can it still work via playlist?
Yes it can! Since making this I have converted all of my disc images to .CHD and it works the exact same, you will just have a different file type. Cheers! Edit: I am hoping in the near future to remake this video and make it more clear visually and zoom in at certain spots better. I will also explain how CHD works the exact same.
Has anyone done this for the Android version my menus are having problems doing this.
@@spencercaserta344 Hopefully someone else in the comments can shed some light for ya, I know it is definitely a different process for Android. It may require something special, I have a handheld Miyoo Mini Plus and it required having specific folders created with all of the thumbnails, so maybe something like that. I get a lot of people asking about Android so in the future I might try to do a video on this. Good luck
do you know how to do it on android?
Unfortunately I do not know how it works on Android. I have a handheld Miyoo Mini Plus that uses a custom version of RetroArch and in order to get thumbnails to work with that, I had to create a specific folder and place all of my properly labeled images inside of it. So it may require doing something like this but I do not want to speculate. I have had a lot of people ask about Android so In the future I might do a video specifically on RetroArch and Android. if I find a good video or source in the meantime I will let you know. Sorry I am not of more assistance.
@@WatsonatorTV thanks for taking the time to answer, i'll be waiting for the video
Hey when I swap over to Disc 2 nothing happens? On Metal Gear Solid 1 as well, any idea what could be the source of the game just not responding? I actively can load up Disc 2 from the menu (which it of course tells me I can't load disc 1 saves on) but when I get to the end of Disc 1, it doesn't go off the insert disc 2 screen
Hmmm this is very interesting. The first thing I was going to ask was if you were able to load up the disc individually, and since you can that basically confirms nothing is wrong with the actual file itself. So just to confirm, have you already created an M3U file and you are able to do a disc change in the menu and load disc 2 (of course you can't do anything without the save but it at least works from here). Or is just disc 2 on its own that you are able to load? (like you still have each file individually in your playlist, Disc 1 and Disc 2)? If you have already made the M3U file and both Disc 1 and Disc 2 can load up individually FROM THE SINGLE M3U FILE but it ONLY has an issue when it says "Insert Disc 2" I have not experienced anything like this. When this prompt comes up are you going in the menu where it says "Disc Control -> Eject Disc -> Change Current Disc Index from Disc 1 to Disc 2 -> Insert Disc"? I will sometimes have RetroArch crash on me or freeze when I load up disc games or swap discs but usually after a restart or a second or third try it works. If you are definitely following these steps exactly, one other thing you can try is to see if it will work with a different core. Sometimes I have had strange issues that I can't explain with PS1 games that are not present when I load it up with another core. So for example if you are using Beetle PSX, try out PCSX ReARMed or vice versa (or maybe even SwanStation, though I have never used this one before, maybe worth a try just to troubleshoot and see). Beyond this I am not really sure beyond double checking the obvious things like updating RetroArch, making sure that your m3u file is definitely typed out correctly (maybe it was formatted in such a way that it can access each disc individually and read each individual file, but it doesnt want to "swap" discs or so to speak, though I am not sure if this is even possible, just double check everything to be safe). I will continue to think about this and update if I come up with any more ideas. Good luck, sorry I am not more help.
@@WatsonatorTV Thank you for the reply! I learned what was happening was embarrassingly simple, so all is good. What was going on was I was attempting to instantly swap over from disc 1 to disc 2, but it seemed like my game needed me first to eject both- and wait for the prompt to change to "Press Start after inserting disc 2." So basically all I had to do was kick both discs out until that changed. Thank you so much for the reply though!
Can you delete the custom image from your desktop after you added it to RetroArch?
Yes that should be fine as it should re-save it in the correct folder within RA.
Just to fast, I set the speed of the video to 0.25x speed to see what he was talking about.
Sorry you had trouble following. To be honest though, if anyone says anything about the speed, they are usually saying I am going too slow and to speed up haha (unless your comment was sarcasm of course xD) In the near future I am going to be doing a more up to date version of this video and perhaps that will make things a bit more clear. If you need help with anything specifically in the meantime though, I would be glad to try and assist you. Cheers!
I got a question 3:20 im stuck here befause when i enter my username and password , it doesnt let me know whether im logged in or not or if i did it correctly
When you plug in your UN/PW in the settings, it's not going to log into anything initially, it's just set up to then enter those credentials every time you load a game that is compatible. So is it not popping up for you with the notifications after a game is launched at all? If this is the case there are a few things to check: First off go to the Settings Column -> User Interface -> On-Screen Notifications and make sure that the setting "On-Screen Notifications" is ON. Next go to Settings Column -> Achievements and double check that it is saving your UN/PW and then go to "Visibility" and make sure that "Unlock notifications" is set to ON. If you checked both of these areas and it looks like all of the settings are in order how they should be, exit out of RetroArch and find the RetroAchievements config file like I did in the video around 5:27 and make sure your credentials are saved in there and CORRECT. Double check you can login with your UN/PW on the website just fine. Beyond this I am not sure, if you aren't seeing anything popup though it really sounds to me like the notifications are jsut turned off. Also if you arent on the newest version on PC there is a good chance it's not going to work. I have no idea how it works with Steam or on consoles as I strictly use this on PC, I have heard these versions are very different though and don't have all of the same features as the PC one.
@ idk what i did but the acheievemtns popped out again. Do i have to login everytime for a new game or for a game i already played before? Do i have to login through achievements or user?
@ the acheievemtns notifications is fine i just dont know whther im actually logged in or not unless im in a actual game. It sucks. Is there a way to know if im logged on without entering a game? Becsuse idk soemtimes if its a particular game that doesnt have acheievemtns or if im just not logged on.
@@jg2722 So you dont actually stay logged in when you arent in a game. The credentials that you input in the settings just sit there waiting to be input automatically when a game starts up. If you don't see anything that means the game isnt supported probably. You only need to login once and then you should be good forever. I have my info in there and whenever I launch a game that is supported it tells me im in and ready to go. If you have a game that is pretty popular or that you think should likely be included with achievements you can just check the website and see if it's supported or not. Edit: Sometimes it is just a matter of getting the correct version. Like maybe it's the Japanese file you need or rev 2 or something like that.
how to do it if your version of Retroarch does NOT have "online updator" EG steam?
Unfortunately I haven't used it through Steam but I have heard that the steam version cuts out A LOT of stuff and the file structure is all different so I would avoid using it at all costs. There MIGHT be a way to get thumbnails working but I am not sure. If you are on a PC just use the standalone version, and a lot of other devices are compatible with the standalone one as well so if your device can use steam there is a good chance it can use RetroArch too.
Retroarch has got to be the worst ui I have ever used in my entire life from any app. Wish they would prioritize the games being the main point of the emulator vs the sea of settings being the main point of the emulator lol
Yeah I definitely can't disagree with you there, a lot of other programs seem to have better UI that makes a lot more sense, I've messed with it for years and there are still random things that amaze me about it all the time. I really like how programs like Dolphin, PCSX2, and Duckstation just immediately pop up with the games in a grid or list. Luckily there IS a lot of customization you can do and mostly anything you don't want to see you can just hide in the settings but you really shouldn't have to watch a video like this in the first place just to understand how it all works, it should be obvious.
I Just want to add wallpapers on the basic theme? surely there must be an option to do so? I'm getting a rog ally x soon enough and want to show my bluff in custom wallpapers! 😊

You should be able to add a custom wallpaper with that easily enough, just like I do in the video: The Rog Ally is going to use a similar version (if not the exact same) as I have, so all you need to do is enable the XMB menu theme (this is pretty much what you would call the "basic theme" as the stock one is grey and boring and doesn't do anything, so pretty much everyone changes it). From there all you have to do is go to Settings -> User Interface -> Appearance -> Background Image and you can pick any image you have on there for your background (just like in the vid). If you need any more information, here is a specific video that goes over RetroArch on the ROG Ally X: ua-cam.com/video/ue8etKCRgLo/v-deo.html Cheers!
Any way if doing it in the nvidia shield directly ?
That is a great question, unfortunately my experience is mostly limited to just a Windows PC and occasionally some random handheld emulators that use RA so I don't want to speculate. If I hear of anything related to this I will be sure and update this comment. I also may eventually try and do a video covering RA on other devices. Sorry I can't be of more help in this matter. You may want to check out the UA-cam channels: Retro Drive, Retro Game Corps, and ETA Prime. I believe they all have videos dealing with the nVidia shield and emulation, not sure how in depth they go though.
@WatsonatorTV Thank you for taking the time to reply it is very much appreciated.
totally unrelated but i just wanna shout you out for doing the tutorial for the pc port for skate 3. I have not done it yet but I know it will work just based on how comprehensive and helpful you are. you sir have earned a sub! thank you
Where can i get the icons at the beginning of the video?
Hey there, if you are referring to the icon set that looks like a wire-frame that you see when the video first starts, this is the set called "Automatic." So at around 8:40 in the video when I go over the icon theme packs, you would just pick the one called "Automatic" in this list (be sure to restart your RetroArch for it to take effect). If you don't see Automatic in the list, just make sure you have the newest RetroArch version (and you might need it for Windows too, I'm not sure what the other ones include). It should be included with RA though, no need to download anything extra.
I appreciate you and your video SO MUCH! You broke it down clearly and concisely! I went through way too many videos trying to figure out how to do this but thankfully I came across yours and that was the end of that! Instant subscribe!
Batocera is trash
If it's Linux then yeah, this is why I want to get the Rog ally X soon enough
This one is making want to tear my hair out
You get some luck with it yet Orange_Pie?
Yeah nice 9 hour tutortial. You look like a total bugman, you will never make any money off of youtube and will work until youre 90 years old. You could have done this in 2 minutes.
so iv been using retro arch for a couple years now and I've been doing things the hard way. I never did the autoscan for directories. I always went to load content and manually went through my files and started games that way. lol. im just now getting into all the customization and this is awesome. but its taking forever to update everything, that's not a bad thing its because have thousands of games. all legally acquired backups that I own physical copies of of course. thanks for the video!
Nah! I recently got a Series X and learned this stuff just like you and then go back to my old devices like crappy deck OLED trying to find similar settings and failing clearly but the curiosity in learning keeps me intrigued 😂😂
Great video, but there is no way to drag & drop .png files into RA desktop in the most recent version.
Thanks for the info, I haven't used that method in a while myself as I just do it all manually in the folders. I will likely make an updated version of this video in the coming months.
November of 2024 - it still works! Thanks
Thank you!
Why is it not letting me hit the like button?
Hmm, not sure, that is weird, I appreciate you trying anyway though! Thank you
Thanks so much! I have no boxarts snd bricksd my first ps classic tryong to use the scrape Artwork menu option
This helped me not to lose 10+ hours of FF7 gameplay on my iPhone. Thank you !!!! A side note if you have previous save data you have to rename the save data file to the name of the M3u playlist for it to work
How did you get to work on iphone? Is it the same method as shown in the video or does the method differ? Thanks
@ same method
Wow, what a coincidence, AVGN just released a brand new Halloween episode this year reviewing Nosferatu ua-cam.com/video/jdXm2eFyOTs/v-deo.html and I am glad to see that I am not the only one who had similar thoughts on this game, right down to some of the exact same complaints and lines and screenshots/video! I spent a lot of my time watching James and Mike (Cinemassacre) over the years and I think they are probably the reason I even know about some of these games and enjoy making videos about stuff like this. Once on a James and Mike Monday episode they even played Nosferatu. I am not sure where I am going with this thought, but it felt like a strange kinship with both videos releasing around the same time and both talking about similar games. High Five Nerd!
Fatal Labyrinth a gem?? Now thats quite a statement, everyone thought it sucked in the 90s.
Not just any gem, a beautiful shining diamond at that!
Warlock = Play the game don't watch the movie! lol
MK 1 only have the code to unlock the blood on the Mega Drive, the SNES version didn't have blood nor the code to unlock it. The SNES version was utter garbage but I still played it a lot. Lol
Ah good catch, thanks for the correction, memories blurring together Edit: I think I also remember a friend of mine having a game genie code to turn the grey sweat to red, I am probably thinking of that honestly.
Keep in mind that these ARE NOT the only games that I would consider horror on the SNES, and just because I didn't mention a game, doesn't mean that it's not considered underrated or a good game. For example, I didn't mention Alien 3 a single time in this video, but it's a great SNES horror game that differs from the Sega Genesis one. Also, these aren't all what I would describe as "unknown" or "obscure gems" like I've covered in the past, though I tried my best to pick ones that are a bit more "underrated."
No way?! How have I never heard of Ghoul Patrol!!! Another great video ❤
Thanks bro, I appreciate your video. I have been searching for tutorial videos to customize RetroArch for a while now, and I was shocked to find that most of the stuff that I have been wanting to change are all right here in one video. Seriously, to take the parentheses and brackets out of the game titles was the only thing I didn't think about changing and I did that too... Great video, very informative... Honestly I can't be upset with the duration of the video, some content creators make way longer videos with a lot less information... Cheers!
I need your help , my RetroArch doesn’t show the download thumbnails option 2:17
Hey there, if you are talking about just seeing the individual "download thumbnails" option for each game, I believe this has been changed in a recent update as I also no longer see it. It's okay though, I would just ignore that part and go for the Online Updater -> Playlist Thumbnails Updater to handle everything. Alternatively you could use the "On-Demand Thumbnail Downloads" option right below it which will do the same thing for an individual game when you hover over it in your list.
Thank you! It helped me so much! By the way this method works with retro handhelds (in my case it's the Anbernic RG35XXSP, which is using RetroArch emulator as well).
Thanks a lot.
I have a problem, what if the image appears in desktop mode instead of regular RetroArch? 😢😢😢
Hmm. So when you are on the desktop view mode the image appears just fine for an entry but as soon as you exit out of that and go back to the normal viewing area, that image doesn't show up anymore for that same entry? I have actually had this happen one time and I could not for the life of me figure it out, it was so strange. I've done literally thousands of these and it only happened once but it frustrated me because it clearly showed that it worked in desktop mode. I can't remember exactly what I did and I have no idea why this happens randomly. Are you only having it happen for one example or does it happen on multiple occasions? If it's more than one there could be something else going on possibly. I think I ended up just creating a new custom image for that example and overwriting the old one and this ended up working but I can't exactly remember. It might help to edit the dimensions or get an entirely new image to use. Try and re-save it as a PNG also. I am going to do a little research on this and see if I can get some more info. Sorry I'm not more help.
@@WatsonatorTV it happens on multiple occasions unfortunately (thank you for the response)
You get major props for picking Buck Rogers. It’s a rare crpg port of the TSR tabletop game that was out for a hot minute back in the day. It’s an excellent game made with the gold box engine that’s surprisingly open and deep. Starflight and Rings of Power are equally good. Their my holy trio of genesis EA rpgs
oh wow
How to see the full path which at the end . . > like this ?
@@samiRetro777 If you are talking about when a game has a long name in the database, you can click the link and then the title will be included in the current URL, you can copy it from there. Or if you are on a PC you can right click the image and click "save image as" and the full title will be shown and highlighted and you can copy it from there directly and then back out without actually saving anything
@@WatsonatorTV bro you'r amazing ! thank you very much :)
Welcome back Watsonator! Another great video, clear instructions and wealth of knowledge! Thanks bro ❤
I stumbled on Skeleton Krew and Ranger X and they both blew me away
For your sake, I would use the timestamps. I apologize for the length of this video, I set out to create a short tutorial video on customizing a RetroArch UI but I clearly am not capable of keeping things short (it also doesn't help that I wanted to do everything in real time, some people seem to like that). I really wanted to delete it and start over with less info and tighter editing but I thought it might be of use to someone out there so I kept it as is. (also here is a link to the backgrounds used in this video: imgur.com/a/3Vn1HLy ) Cheers!
That was extremely easy and intuitive, just straight up to the point, thanks for helping me out!
Thanks guy for actually showing how to scan the m3u into a playlist; others don't seem to show that step.
Omg im going to take forever to do this, I have over a thousand SNES games in a playlist and a good portion of them are missing art.
