This is a Magnepan LRS upgrade you may perform yourself by by passing the tweeter and jumper so the signal goes directly to the tweeter. The socket or crescent wrench size will be 7/16". The screwdriver will be standard, and the Allen wrench will be an M2. You may also want to preplace the binding posts with some higher grade Cardas. I don't recommend this upgrade because I heard no difference.

Amsoil All-In-One vs Howes Diesel Fuel Additive

Amsoil All-In-One vs Howes Diesel Fuel Additive
Nice streamer. But an extra dac is probably better. So for now I have the Fiio K11 and JDS Atom dac plus and Mojo 2 and Xduoo TA 22 and Burson with Pre amp or FX Tube Glass dac and Power Dac BX and Cyan 2 on paper. The cheapest streamer should at best have USB or even better i2s connections to use the clock from the dac such as the Arylic S50 pro plus or the Nano or this Ultra maybe.
Just did this mod - I'm noticing a more relaxed sound, a little bit more microdetail, and slightly better imaging. It's not a massive upgrade but it's enough to make you happy. The next course of action is replacing the steel speaker inputs and replacing them with some Cardas binding posts.
USB to a good DAC is the way to go, small differences if there are…
I was having the same problem. Thanks!
Just got mine, very impressed with it, this will replace my bluesound Node 2I, the WIIM Ultra app is just better, doesn't lock up like my Node 2I, I also had issue with my external usb hard drive adding favorites, no problem with the Ultra. On my Samsung phone, Node 2i would not allow me to adjust volume to another app, i would have to close the Node 2I app to adjust example to the UA-cam app. WIIM did not have this issue. Then you add in parametric EQ and room correction. Plus, it was almost 1/2 the price, NO brainer
Hi 👋, what is the right way to connect Ultra to my old (er) Nad amp to use it like preamp -amp combo? Tnx and nice channel
Nice video! May I ask you what your 450 W amp is?
@@d.s.cullom5461 they were 20watt aegir bridged now I have my old herron audio m150 150 watt monoblocks. Drives the low impedance maggies much better.
When you bridge the amp sees a load that is twice the load of what the speakers says it is.The Aegirs were seeing a 2 ohm load. That would be enough to shut those down, or at least not play correctly. I’m familiar with those Aegirs. Despite of the Aegirs good reviews, I wasn’t very impressed, but your new amp, however, looks like a winner. What’s Hifi, gave it stellar ratings in all categories.
I’ve got one now. It replaces a node2i + rme adi. Was hoping for it to be a close call but it’s not. Room correction helps but it’s a massive downgrade otherwise. I’m going to give it to my son
I don't understand the hype, even my smart TV has a better DAC. The sound through the Ultra is only mediocre, nothing exciting
Thanks for your video! I don’t have the LRS + I have a 28 year-old pair of SMGc’s that I acquired a little over a month ago. They sound incredible and yet removing the fuse from the signal path and connecting the tweeter directly as described here has taken them to another level of precise transients and overall clarity! When I realized the fuse was directly in the path of the tweeter, I was concerned that it would negate all the other good wires and connecters in the signal path. It appears that the protection does come at a sonically detrimental cost. Maybe I’m experiencing an expectation bias, but I’ve heard new things in music that I am very familiar with. I seldom play anything above 80 decibels so I think the sonic benefit is too great and the risk is too small to worry.
Loving my WiiM Ultra. Wish it had a nicer volume control knob, I like using my A70 HP amp for volume and balanced out, but don't really need, I just like it.
I've owned the wiim ultra and its internal DAC for about a week now, and it's shockingly good given its price as a digital preamp-DAC combo. I don't mean the wiim sounds good for the money. I mean it sounds like a true, audiophile grade component. Can you purchase a better sounding preamp-DAC combo? Of course, but the law of diminishing returns starts with the wiim ultra. I didn't even mention the ultra's excellent streaming, bass mgmt, or room correction features. Simply put, amazing value for the money.
I own the Ultra. Love it. Works perfectly in my system. Would highly recommend .. My Best…..Dan
Thanks for the video. I just bought my wiim ultra yesterday. Looking forward to seeing what it can do😊
I've had it run through the Geshelli J2S with both the AKM and Sparkos upgrades plus USB input, and it sounds better than the Wiim Ultra built in DAC as mentioned in the video. The Geshelli with upgrades cost me $758. My friend told me to try the Schiit Bifrost 2/64 DAC, which retails for $799, and it sounds IMHO noticeabley better than the Geshelli. The extra clarity in background vocals and cymbals was unmistakable. So what I'm saying is there was a bigger jump up in sound performance from the Geshelli to the Schiit than from the Wiim to the Geshelli. I would not upgrade the internal DAC with one that costs sub $500. It's just not worth it. The Bifrost is r2r while the j2s is delta sigma.
@@thepracticalaudiophile Cool. Thanks for the info. I’ve just been using the internal DAC with a Samson S-Amp. Does the job quite well, but I do feel there’s room for improvement if/when I feel like spending the money. Honestly, I’m quite content though.
Thanks for sharing, this ultra sounds like a hell of a deal. I believe you were thinking of the Shiit Freya + preamp. Good preamp from what I hear.
Ones connected to my tv via hdmi wich amp and speaker plus sub do you recommend? Im new and would like to build it from scratch. Thanks!
3:23 I’m good with my external DAC … Denafrips Ares 12-1🙂
You already have an audiophile DAC. If you have the pro or pro plus I wouldn't upgrade unless you need the pretty screen showing the album art or the HDMI input is important. It sounds slightly better than the optical. Unless you're using the Ultra as a preamplifier I wouldn't worry about it.
@@thepracticalaudiophile Thanks ,I think you helped make my decision NOT to buy …
I have a denafrips too and i used a wiim pro as a streamer. I will say that when i got the ultra and used the usb connection to go to the denafrips it sounded noticeably better. Using the usb connection you use the clock on the denafrips. Using spidf (coax or optical) to the denfrips youre using the timing clock on the wiim pro. Sounded much better to me. Id recommend.
@@alexlopez-u3i Interesting 🤔
How it sound with denafrips sir?
Good evening ☕️ It’s hard to capture in essence a digital preamplifier with a DAC and streamer … I’m still flipping a coin 🪙 on the Ultra. Have a great evening.
well?
@@degreesdegrees-jr4eg well?
@thepracticalaudiophile will you make a new vid like you talk about . thanks
@degreesdegrees-jr4eg Okay. Just been busy.
Sorry about the delay. I tried to record some audio clips for the video with a mic I spent over two hundred dollars on and it sounded boomy. To give you a heads up on the next video the Geshelli combo sounded more detailed and analytical but the internal dac on the Wiim Ultra sounded more laid back and much easier to listen to for extended listening sessions. Now this is going through my GR-Research modified LRS+ speakers. Your system might vary. If I didn't own the gelli j2 already I would've been happy with the internal DAC on the Wiim Ultra. As far as the Wiim Pro goes no, I would need to use the Geshelli J2. I have no opinion on the Wiim Pro Plus because I haven't listened to it for an extended period of time.
Is it true that if I pair with some powered speakers like Klipsch R-50PM via optical, that would bypass the DAC that is integrated inside the Wiim Ultra ? thanks
@xtian2900 yes it would use the dac in the speakers. You would have to use the analog outputs to the analog inputs of the speaker to use the wiim dac.
@@thepracticalaudiophile Noted, Thanks for your kind reply
I've purchased q acoustics concept 50 floorstanders and paired with yamaha a-s1200 Picked up a cheapie bluetooth receiver 1mii ds200 just to get it going with Bluetooth 5 and ldac Sounds flat, even hi res quoboz Wondering if this is because of the cheap receiver? Will the wiim ultra be a dramatic improvement?
@stevenleonards4843 yes because it won't be bluetooth
Why go thru all the trouble to stream via Bluetooth? Just buy powered speakers with Bluetooth and it will sound equally bad. Bluetooth transmits highly compressed low quality sound and it will always sound like hot garbage
I hope that wiim ultra sounds better than my wiim pro+ geshelli JNOG2(j2) or at least equal. I ordered ultra and sold my wiim pro and geshelli dac😢. Maybe it was wrong move.
So how are you feeling now about the decision you made? Happy?
I haven't got it yet. Here in Europe (Finland) everything comes little bit later.😢
So how's your experience?
@deeprajsingh2703 I cancelled order. So I don't know.
@@deeprajsingh2703 I ended up ordering one. I didn't need a new streamer but wanted to see what the hype was all about. I would say for the money it's a great product. It offers a lot for few hundred bucks. Various ways you can use it. HDMI is a great feature. It's nicer looking in person than I thought it would be. The room correction & dual PEQ works well. I've had Dirac & minidsp devices. The WiiM isn't to that level but it's very capable of making positive improvements in the sound. You can use all the functions of the Ultra with its digital outputs as well. So if you have a better dac. It's internal dac is fine. If most of your surrounding components are in this price range & a little higher I think you will have no issues with the dac or anything about the Ultra. I have more costlier components, pretty good mid/low Fi gear some would say. Probably $10k if retail..somewhat newer components in my living room set up. The Ultra didn't match the quality of sound as my Prisma NP5 streamer with a IFI Elite power supply going to either my RME ADI-2 FS or Denafrips Pontus ii dacs. I can use my RME dac's PEQ functions for DSP/eq. I'm not currently using the Ultra but I kept it anyway. It's a great device & one day I'll eventually use it somewhere/sometime. I just feel my Prisma has better sound quality. It's like $750 new but I bought it used for half that. And I've had more expensive streamers...I've tried a bunch of budget types, I like the Prisma.. especially for what I got it for $. But if the WiiM is in your budget & you can use all it has to offer, it's an easy choice in my opinion. If you need some type of more advanced EQ (not just a B & T knob) the WiiM has it. I don't believe the guy who made a UA-cam video saying it was great in a $80k system though. I mean I'm sure it sounded good or even great. But if just based on sound quality I think there are better for not too much more. I'm not knocking the Ultra. Great device. I wouldn't base a hi end system around it lol. For some people it's all they will ever need. And that's a good thing. It really gives someone a lot for the money..if you need it.
It's logical that the Ultra sounds worse with headphones, the Ultra's headphone amplifier is for compliance.
What about streamer sound quality compared to the pro? I already have my own dac.
@a4rontran Small but noticeabley better.
Fair enough enjoy the weekend
I have mine paired with my Geshelli j 3 pro , love the combo
Great, honest review, with plenty of comparative references. Very helpful.
Thanks for the response!
Thanks for the great video. If you set the input and output to line-in and line-out respectively it’ll effectively be an analog passthrough, can you still adjust volume in this configuration?
@hlash99 Yes, you may adjust volume, but know on analog pass-through. The incoming line level will be converted to digital and then back to analog.
You are leaving so much out of this review. It’s not just a dac upgrade when reviewing the ultra
I didn't realize you still had the original connector plate on the back of the speaker. Those things are loaded with Steel parts. You are bottlenecking that upgrade significantly. At this point you are hearing about 40 to 50% of what it brings to the table. If you get all of that out of the signal path the difference will be very significant.
With all of those connectors and binding posts in the signal path, you are only getting about 50 to 60% of the benefit of the upgrade. If you wire them point to point with no connectors, and use the tube connectors that come with the upgrade kit, it will improve clarity and detail levels across the board.
really???? show me your work.. the design alone w parts is more imp than those sub optimal connex imo
@@veroman007 What do you want me to show you? I designed your upgrade. Yes really, all of those connectors are eating up your resolution.
Gteat review, John. Would you say the DAC on yhe Uktra is better than the Modi 3 with the AK4490 delta-sigma chip?
@ElMayimbe73 If you're talking about the $129 modi, then yes. The other schiit DAC'S no. It sounds excellent, though. If you buy the Ultra, you will not feel like you need a better DAC. The Modi reminds me of the Pro dac.
@ElMayimbe73 I have the $720 version of the Geshelli J2 with the AKM4499 and Sparkos upgrades. It does sound better but slightly. If I got the Ultra before I got the DAC, I would not have upgraded.
@@thepracticalaudiophile you're awesome. Thank you so much.
You were doing well until you said the other company's dac sounded better. That dac measures great, as does the Wiim Pro Plus. You are imagining things if you think one sounds different or "better". Your sighted bias is misleading you.
@@BrianHall-Oklahoma do you think all DAC's sound the same?
@brianhall What are you going on about? Of course DACs sound different to each other. Are you new to the hobby?! I’ve tried multiple DACs and they all had different sonic characteristics. Hence why I now have a Pontus II.
@@BrianHall-Oklahoma excellent dac

Thanks for clearing that up. I’ve never put together a crossover like that one now I have my confidence back!
Thank you. Thats a helpful review.
So if you using a WiiM mini going to external DAC, would this going to external DAC sound any better? Or would you be gaining better functionality as pre amp with bass management and some room correction and HDMI port?
Going from the Wiim mini to an external DAC may not sound better than the built in DAC on the ultra because the ultra also has better jitter reduction circuitry built in. It sounds excellent. Not as good as going to my Geshelli J2 DAC. But it sounds excellent. I would just listen to the Ultra with the built in DAC and if you need more then you can always hook up an external DAC later. Connecting the TV through the ARC does sound better than through the optical (to my ears anyway). It is a very nice streamer. Worth the upgrade. Remember it's a lot bigger than the mini so make sure you have space.
@@thepracticalaudiophile Thanks for your reply! I am currently using a topping e50 DAC with WiiM mini. Trying to figure out if the ultra would be a noticeable sound quality upgrade. I would definitely use it as a preamp So the built in sub crossover and hdmi would be a good benefit.
@nascarracer886 It won't compete with a good preamp/amp combo, but it will sound very good.
@@thepracticalaudiophile I’ve been on the lookout for a good preamp. Any pre amp suggestions?
I have a question. On the schematic, it shows the smaller inductor connecting to both the positive and negative wires on the tweeter circuit. What’s up with that?
According to Danny's video explaining the crossover upgrade on the LRS Pluses, it has something to do with correcting a phase shift and setting the proper crossover roll off frequency. I'd watch the video to be sure.
@@thepracticalaudiophile but you don’t have that little inductor hooked up to the other wire. In the schematic that inductor is drawn connecting the positive positive and negative wires leading into the speaker.
@CashGravel instead of splitting the wire and have one lead, go to the positive and the other to the small inductor then to ground. I just went from the internal lead to the ground. Electrically, it's the same thing. Half the current still doesn't go to the tweeter but directly to the small inductor then ground.
What gauge is the inductor?
@pedrocols I don't know but looks like 12.
@@thepracticalaudiophile Thank you so much!
the question is for me, using an external DAC, is the digital output stage better than the wiim pro? using your external DAC did you notice any difference in sound between using the ultra and pro? I just got the Geshelli j3pro with the sparkos 2590. That thing is awesome. upgraded from a modi3. Great video, thanks!
@RamisDad hopefully within the next month, I'm going to hook up both the pro and ultra directly to the preamp via analog outputs and to the geshelli via coax on both. Plus, I am buying a stereo microphone so I can make some video clips where they can be compared on the video. Plus, my thoughts also. I did a quick listen this morning using the apple music app from my apple tv through the hdmi arc and sounded better than the optical from the TV. More crisp and focused.
@@thepracticalaudiophile look forward to what you find out, thanks!
@RamisDad okay I just listened to Nora Jones don't know why song on Qobuz at 192/24 using the coax output to my dac. The Ultra is clearly better. The cymbals were louder (as in not muted - definitely not boosted) and extended where you heard them longer. Bass clearer and all listening fatigue gone. It's silky smooth while still maintaining complete clarity. Is it worth the upgrade over the pro and pro+? Yes, definitely.
One last thing. The pro plus going to the external DAC sounded slightly worse than the Ultra internal DAC, but the Ultra to my geshelli sounded easily better. Almost perfect.

I think a major feature the Ultra has over Pro and Pro Plus that many overlook is HDMI Arc. This is huge for many people.

So the ultra sucks then
😂 Unless you buy it for USB out to an external DAC! But if you have a WiiM amp, that feature was just rolled out in a firmware upgrade on it! 🙌 WiiM amp and ultra are their only streamers with USB out to external DACs, and I’m sure they both sound identical that way. Reason is - USB is asynchronous and doesn’t receive the clock signal like over other digital outputs on WiiM products, allowing the external DAC to handle the clock of the audio stream internally in its DAC, which is more precise as it doesn’t have to chase it from other digital outputs. Basically USB sounds better than SPDIF, I2S is the only digital signal that sounds better than USB. Hope someone learned a thing or two 😉
The ultra absolute does not suck.
Did you see any sonic upgrades to the streamer section? As in does the ultra with an external dac sound better than pro with an external dac?
@@MrBravo143 there was a previous video where he unboxed it
@krzysztofgilowski1736 Going by the quality of the outputs, they seem identical to the pro and pro plus. According to Wiim on their FAQ section on the forum, not only did they improve the internal dac, but they also reduced and improved the jitter. So, there is less jitter on all digital outputs. Plus, their internal clock is better, so it's not just the dac improvement.
@@thepracticalaudiophileunless WiiM will allow users to roll opamps, all we’ll hear is the sound of the cheap IC opamps in the output stage of these streamers/DACs which will sound exactly like this reviewer described it. 😉 Just realized you’re the reviewer 😅🙃👍 Unless you buy it for USB out to an external DAC of course. But if you already have a WiiM amp, that feature was just rolled out in a firmware upgrade on it! 🙌 WiiM amp and ultra are their only streamers with USB out to external DACs, and I’m sure they both sound identical that way.
