Mental Strategies For Those At The Back Of The Pack
I’m 44 6ft2 110kg Dad of a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old. After a recent string of big life events; accepting we couldn’t have children, foster training, illness, suddenly getting pregnant, my partner nearly dying during childbirth, Traumatic birth, my partner nearly dying 2 weeks after childbirth, our business (Keswick B&B) failing, miscarriage, 2 short notice high-pressure career changes and now into a high-stress job. Everyone is now safe and healthy but I think in a moment of madness and probably in an attempt to exercise some control I signed up for Lakes in a Day (50 miles). At least its motivated me to get out and exercise.
I am not fit, I have never been a regular runner. I was in the Army many moons ago and did some canoe marathon Ultras. I’m basically going couch to 50 miles in 6 months (yes I’m ashamed, and yes your heart's right to sink and your eyes are right to roll).
I’ve started training;1 long run, 1 park run, 1 hill reps, 1 run or quick hill walk, 1 strength. I’m not asking you to condone an objectively unwise course of action. But it is happening. I am hoping you might have some advice on the mental approach to a much slower mover at the back?
It must be a strange thing for someone who runs to the standard you do to contemplate but imagining someone going into a 50 miler aiming to beat the ‘grim sweeper’ and just finish. Do you have any advice, tips, or tricks that might help maintain the mental strength to just keep moving?
Summary: An old fat bloke has thrown himself at a 50 miler and wants advice on a mental battle with the Grim Sweeper.

Is it as simple as just clenching the buttocks? So, how can you effectively engage the glutes and tell if you’re doing it correctly? teaandtrails.com/ www.patreon.com/teaandtrails www.teaandtrailsultra.com/ ...

Mel what a legend! Loved this interview ♡
I needed to do a 2 hour run and we have an Arctic outflow....so treadmill and podcast! Leroy is awesome! What a dude. You're nailing it with awesome guests. Hope Eddie is feeling better. Loved the "I won't talk as much" and then goes on a ripper! Enjoyed the dentist story a lot Gary. Nice to know I'm not the only one ✌
Such a good listen🔥❤️

Fit vs 5th generation?
I never did get a hat for Christmas.. so I just bought myself one ! :D
Wow I love Mel. What an inspiring lady. So glad her health travels have gone well. What a great achievement with the Winter Spine. Gary ...well said...she's definitely a radiator. Great interview!
She was ace! Hopefully our paths cross again soon :)
I always use my head torch on as low as possible (and still useful) it allows your eyes to adjust to the darkness so you can see more even without the torchlight!
Race Across Scotland is calling Eddie!! Mel was a fabulous guest.
Right on her doorstep! It does look awesome 🙌🏻

Thanks so much for doing these videos Gary, they were a great help for my first time in the dene yesterday. I don’t think I’d have found my way round without the little notes I took from them. 👍
Glad to help! Yeah, I can feel like a maze at first. Kudos on your 17 hills 🙌
I discovered Runderwear within the last year! You should get them as a sponsor and maybe a 50% Patreon discount?? haha! Sanna is really sweet and an amazing runner. I loved the Logan talk just as much. Top points for dogs on ALL the furniture.
What a great guest! So pleased she said yes 🙌🏻 Yeah, imagine all those missed cuddles if they weren’t allowed on the furniture 😀
How is your curtains and how is your lips in the first minute and a half! Jeez! Thanks for the shout-out guys. Loads of Tea & Trails love on the Spine Race this past week. Jason Stobbs is going to love this (he probably won't remember doing it as he was off his tree!)
Aw, thanks Sharon, it was so lovely to see the hats and snoods in the pics 🙌🏻 Roll on next year 😅 Hope you have had a chance to catch up on some sleep 😴
Unfortunately this jacket has gone backward with the fit. I have an athletic shaped body, so I can't understand why they have gone from a great first jacket that I have had for 4 years now, to an aweful new fitting shape. I cant fathom why they have made it so tight across and under the most movement areas, I can't move my arms forward in it without it looking like it would split. I'd never be able to fit a layer under it and do something like the spine in it without my armpits rubbing. Making shoes bigger for wider fit great, but then making this so tight across the chest and back is insanity. I will have to look elsewhere, which is unfortunate as I loved my first one.
I tried the next size up and that fit me much better.
@@teaandtrails For my shape it's just not comfy in the pits and across the back unfortunately, even the next size up strangely. It's just that cut. It's a shame so will have to look elsewhere. Cheers Gary
Which size did you get? And what us your height/ weight? I’m between M and L
Really enjoyed the tips....I have a (first time) stage race later this year and could absorb a big chunk of the info. Trish is just simply awesome.
Very exciting Steve! Stage races are ace. Yeah, Trish is such a star 🤩
Fab! Well done Eddie. Beautiful, raw and honest. ❤
Thanks Vanessa 🙏🏻
Excellent episode, as always. Great tips on the longer distance races which I will take on board, however it has just reinforeced my thoughts that I will never enter The Spine 😊
Haha! I’m with you Neil 😂 It’s not for me either!
Uncle Gary and Auntie Eddie...great show! Sam seems a solid guy. This was my first blue tooth treadmill venture....listening. Not bad for 61 eh!
Thanks Steve 🙏🏻 What a guy! Incredible bluetooth skills 🙌🏻
Another amazing episode, thank you Eddie, Gary and the coaches. After an awesome 20 miles with friends this morning a couple of hours or relaxing and sorting kit with you all made my Sunday. Hope all the Spine runners are safe and well.
Thanks Stuart 🙏🏻 20 miles with friends ☺️👌🏻

Eddie I found this interview truly inspiring.. I d.n.f’d my first 100 attempt last year (s.d.w) after hearing what you went through it makes me realise if I’m honest with myself I need to dig a lot deeper than I did.. Arc 50 in jan so I can put it to the test 😂 really well done and thanks for the inspiration
Thanks for watching 🙏🏻 Best of luck with the Arc 💪🏻 Let us know how you get on 🤞🤞
Just playing catch up, what a great episode, my sort of athlete, get out of the door and have a great day out!! I was at the Strollers urban ultra too and there is actually plenty of trail, it's 34 miles, next one poss March 26.
Thanks for watching Dave & happy new year 🥳 Had some mates doing the urban ultra. They said it was great 👍🏻
@@teaandtrails HNY!
UGRC ❤ again. Thank you guys.
Thanks for all the support 🙌🏻
Cheers for the shout out for the UGRC. ❤
Thanks for all the support 🙌🏻
Could you use these for roads if you ran both trail and roads on seperate runs?
Yeah, I suppose so. I’d prefer shoes with less grip, but the foam is nice and soft so it should feel fine.
Thank you for the experience. You are a good runner and I thank you for I can see the beautiful London!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the experience.
Any time! Thanks for watching :)
Bells is not whisky Gary!!!! Bah! Try Bushmills which is another blended whisky but easier on the palate. Sam was a fab guest. Looking forward to welcoming him into CP5.5 Byrness.
Aw, thanks for the whisky 🥃 tip 🙏🏻 Yeah, Sam was ace. Hope he has a great race 💪🏻

how to maintain my watch and HRM pro plus connected through out the night while sleeping to track my resting HR..
I don’t think you can do that
I’m lost for words. What an incredible achievement in such unbelievably difficult circumstances. Thank you so much Eddie for sharing your inspirational story with us. I’m a real newbie to this trail running business and am currently about halfway through my training plan for the Kielder Dark Skies Trail Marathon in March ‘25. Everything is relative of course, but my training run of 2 hours earlier today felt like a real achievement. Breathe and believe - whatever the distance. Thank you and Gary for your constant encouragement. Keep doing what you do and Happy Christmas to you both.
Oh Eddie… you superstar! Fab episode ❤
Awesome video as always Gary! Great edit 🔥 I’m looking to test out a shokz product, which one would you say has the best sound quality? Also, if we call this model a 10/10 for sound quality, how far behind would you say the Suunto Wings are? 🙈
Thanks buddy 🙏 Good question, I'd say a strong 8 for the Suunto. Although I love these, I'm reaching for the OpenAir Fit most of the time.
