Lifestyle, family, homesteading, and learning how to live a simpler life in the country!
We are researching, learning, and trying to position ourselves to become beginner Homesteaders, learning and sharing as we go! We live in our (2020) brand new home that we built on our family's farm... ok, we hired the professionals, but we have loved sharing our experience! Now that the process is over and we are settling in, we are pulling our images, videos, and stories to put together content to share with others who are considering or going through the process of building their home.
We hope to share all kinds of things pertaining to homesteading, running a household and a family, and everything in between. We know very little but are excited to learn and see what our forever homestead can do for our family!

Canning Tomatoes in a Water Bath | My first time canning tomatoes!!
Is it different if u use liquid pectin bs powder? I’ve always followed the certo recipe and they have you boil juice and sugar for 1 min then add pectin and boil another minute. It’s always turned out set
Honestly I haven't tried the liquid!!
I watched a lot of videos on making grape jelly and yours is by far the best! Thank you
Thank you so much for the compliment!!!
Just to let you know that water on your lids is not an issue. Also you tighten the lids so tight. You only need to close it finger tight. The air in the jars has to be able to escape to create a suction.
Thank you! Yes someone else pointed out that I don’t have to tighten them so tight lol. I’ve changed my ways since posting this haha. Thanks for watching!!
Very nice job explaining the process starting my first batch now thanks
Very NICE!! I would have loved to hear you read some of it.
We used your method this morning an made muskedine grape jelly. 19 cups of fluid 15 cups of sugar. We just took the first batch out of th water bath. I hope it sets up. It is super good. Thank you for your how to video. I’ve made lots of jelly in my life but a few batches of wild blackberry did not set so I cooked it down. But this was very helpful. Thanks again from East Texas! ❤
Awesome!!! It should set overnight (at least). I just did blackberry this summer and kicked myself for not recording it. But it turned out GREAT. Oh well, next time :)
how many will this feed?
As a side dish, I would say this safely would accommodate 6-8 depending on how large of portions your people generally take for a potato side! We had 4 who ate with us for this meal and had a little left over.
I'm about to try this but with grape juice from my grapes.
How did it turn out?
I tried au gratin box in crockpot, and I added cooked ground beef, so good. Will make it again
Thank you so much for this video. You made it easy for me to understand ❤
I’m trying this tonight! We are busy with being out in the sunshine and going to the park and I just hate boiling the potatoes on the stove it seems to take forever and I constantly have to tend to it and stir and I just don’t have time for that with 5 kids and 3 of them are under 5, I don’t have time for all that so I love the crock pot to make it now and have it ready to go when I get home! Thanks for this recipe and method of doing this!! It’s a lifesaver and my whole family loves these potatoes so now that I have an easier way to make them, I’ll make them more often!!!
After u open the jar do u refrigerator after used or u can leave them on the counter with the top on
I would definitely keep them in the fridge! (If for nothing else-to keep the jelly more firm!
Have you tried agave!
Firsts should always be celebrated! I’m happy for you and can’t wait to read your work!
THANK YOU so much!!! <3
❤ u mom
Love you too bub!
I did this less water more milk, added chucks of chedder
OOoooooh I bet that made it nice and rich!
I added diced ham.
Same here. Loved the look of flat paint, but it didn’t hold up well to kids! I found that a gentle rub with a damp magic eraser took minor scuffs right off! Good luck! We’re about to build again soon!
This is how my grandma did it.
I'm gonna try this
Looks really good. I’m making this tomorrow. Thank you for video! Have a great evening ☺️😋
Question: I’ve seen many grape jelly recipes and none of them require lemon juice. Why is that?
Oh no now I’m nervous.. I’m using Sure Jell pectin the recipe calls for 5 cups juice and 7 cups sugar.. it’s one more cup of sugar than you add. I would hate for this to not turn out…. I picked fresh grapes
I’d say follow one recipe from beginning to end. Either use my recipe or the other you are using with fresh grapes. The water bathing will be the same regardless of which recipe you use, though 😁😁
I make mine from scratch, but what a wonderful idea if we don't have fresh apples. Thank you for sharing!!
You’re welcome! I want to do it in bulk next time. We’re already down to one jar.
This is the simplest and most informative vid I’ve found! I love how real and non pretentious you are.
Well thank you so much for the complement! I’m trying to come up with some more recipes that people would enjoy! I’ve debated trying new jellies or just random meals!! Would love your input!!
A big trend is affordable meals at home but really anything homey and good to feed a family would be super informative :) you got a subscribe out of me regardless :)
I heard instead of pectin you can use the peels of green Granny Smith Apples! Instead of using a product with possible unknown chemicals. 💚
Very interesting. I had not heard of that before! Thanks for watching!
how many cups of juice to one box of sure jell
3 cups grape juice 1 pkg powdered pectin 4 cups sugar
I have seen a lot of videos for making homemade jelly, and I believe yours is the best I have seen yet! You are clear, concise, friendly, and give me all the information that I need. This will be my first year making grape jelly. Mostly, I make jams. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m working on more videos! It’s been a ringer of a summer and we’re finally getting back into a good rhythm! Thanks for watching!
We grow champagne grapes (from my late father-in-law’s garden). They are delicious. And I am hoping to make grape jelly out of them. I hope it works out.
I'm giving your recipe a go right now. Pressure canning freaks me out too.
Best of luck!!!
Loved watching you may jelly but what was the roar in the background? It gave me a headache and I had to turn my speakers all the way up to hear you over the roaring sound.
Interesting, I can only hear my hvac system at a very dull volume... or maybe the rolling boil from the canning pot? Thanks for watching and for your kind words!
I know this is old but something at 7:18 went into the jelly from the sugar. It was thick and black.
Thank you for the heads up!! I went and looked at that and it looks like a break in the sugar and the black background of the pot/stove behind me. That said, we're almost done with the last of that batch and haven't come across anything undesireable mixed in our jelly (THANK GOD, LOL)! :) Thanks for looking out!!
volume to low,but love the content

How do you do the kiwi strawberry juice
Hi! I've never done kiwi strawberry. I imagine you could test it out subbing the grape juice for it, but I couldn't guarantee the results! Sounds interesting though!! I do have a video for strawberry jam too!
@@harmonyhomestead5 thank you
Could you make apple jelly the same way using 100% bottled apple juice? Thank you this recipe is awesome.
Do you use prepared grape juice or do you press your own from fresh ?grapes
Hi! I use grape juice! I've tried actual fresh grapes before and I wasn't fond of the consistency!
Ty
Don't tip the jars after Canning them. And you can add a pat of butter to cut the foam
Thanks for the tip!! I'm JUST NOW out of jelly and am making more today! I am going to try adding butter and not tipping them!!
Hi from Australia how many grams is there in the pectin packet?
1.75oz - I used a conversion tool on Google and it comes to: 49.6116654 grams I hope this helps!!
I was thinking you were putting in fruit trees.
Looks delicious!
❤️❤️🤣🤣✌️
Can frozen berries be used?
I know that you are a new canner but the processing time for your jam is 10 minutes. You should go watch some of the ladies that have been canning for years. I have only been canning since 2019. Also get a Ball Blue Book of canning and follow all their directions.
Your head space for jams and jellies should be 1/4 inch. It is for expansion and it forces out all the air in the jar to make them seal.
Years ago during the 1970s I canned green beans and corn in a hot water bath.We ate them and they didn't harm my family I didn't know about a pressure cooker canner.
Can you please give a link to where I can get the canning jar mitt you used in this video? Thanks!
I actually got that so many years ago. I just did an Amazon search and couldn’t find it! I did see some links to some silicon gloves though!🧤
@@harmonyhomestead5 Gloves I got! That mitt just seems so perfect!
finger tip tight; don't crank down on them. They will not seal properly
i have a flat of concord grapes frozen for this purpose ; time to make jelly I guess....
I have made low sugar jams for years and most people say it's better than full sugared jams but my little boy will not touch jams. He only wants jellies so I am eager to try this. Great video, thanks
My middle kiddo is suuuuper picky. And he LOVES this jelly! I make the homemade u crustables (there’s a video for this in my library) and he always asks “did you use YOUR grape jelly?” Lol so it’s definitely kid friendly!
Hi! I just discovered your channel and I'm loving your videos :) I'm an aspiring homesteader and don't have a mom with traditional skills, but you are definitely helping me learn. Thank you!
Thanks for watching! I am hoping to keep posting fairly regularly! Definitely keep watching and feel free to recommend things you’d like to see!
Your videos have been helpful! I’m making pomegranate jelly for gifts. Do you know anything about boiling the lids right before putting them on the jars? My mom and grandma did it that way when they would make jelly some years ago. They would boil the lid with the rubber lining so it would be very soft and hot and once the jars were filled they would take the lids out of the water, dry them well and place them on the jars and screw on the other piece. I think the water bath looks easier, though.
I’ve not heard of just boiling them before securing them on and then just not doing anything after but I want to know more!!! Water bath canning is my jam (no pun intended lol) because of how easy it can be!
@@harmonyhomestead5 nice one! Ya, the bath is what seems easier to me. Here goes nothin’! Thanks for the reply!
