So, welcome to my youtube channel. Currently, it's a bit of a catch-all, where I put videos of bee keeping stuff, as well as the various mechanical shenanigans I get in to (hot-rodding the girls power wheels, tuning cars, things like that).
I'm working to get more stuff on video, I've been used to just getting things done and moving on, maybe grabbing a picture along the way, so it's a learning curve. More often than not I get done doing something and THEN think I should've recorded that, so... work in progress. Bee stuff lends itself to video a little better, so I think I'll probably have to set up something a little different in the shop for the other shenanigans. Perhaps some kind of live streaming setup or such.

Ebay intercooler vs Ebay intercooler!
Переглядів 421Рік тому
so I took one of my spare intercoolers and looped off the corners of the end tanks to rotate the entry and exit and see if that would a) balance things out a little and more importantly b) yield reasonable results. I'm not sure I got reasonable results, but the results were definitely positive.

BPU IPD Turbo Cam Test!

The long awaited stock T cam vs the IPD turbo cam. This cam has always worked well, but we've never really stacked it up to see how well it does and I wanted to "trust but verify". The cam delivers, probably more than was represented in this quick back to back comparision, since I didn't do much more than make sure the afrs were roughly right after the cam swap. I did a later pull and added a s...
Ebay Intercooler Test, and lessons learned
Переглядів 5 тис.Рік тому
A test that started off as a simple "here's how much power your ebay intercooler is preventing you from making", and then grew from there to a three way test with a local off the shelf intercooler, that now has me questioning what I thought I knew about these things but clearly didn't pay enough attention to. For all your custom intercooler and other hotrod needs, hit up Greg at go-autoworks: w...

Bit of clickbait there, but nothin' but the truth! This is the quick and dirty version of my other ebay intercooler video, more action, less discussion. A brief discussion about the doug-nash overdrive from Kent's C4. fresh seals and fractions and cleaning later, it's 95% done. waiting on a new front bearing to button it all the way up. should have a bunch more updates coming soon!
Huge puff of black smoke on deccel. Im glad to see im jot the only one.
Did you manage to ever test it? Im seriously debating getting one and im super interested about the performance, especially with the unequal length headers and the wastegate angle placement

Yeah... no. Check for boost leaks. Common sense! You're not gonna lose 25% of hp because of minor differences on intercoolers. Something is NOT right.

200whp? Not bad going to get a new redblock with only 75k miles re sealed and put that ipd cam in, add a catch can and hopefully a new turbo. Hoping to get about 200whp like this but idk how much the trans can hold it’s an auto 1988 760 turbo Inter cooler estate.
at 200 the trans will be fine. once you start moving past 250 you'll definitely want a better than oem trans cooler setup and you'll want to be careful in overdrive, and pretty much once you get past 300whp it becomes a service item whose frequency depends on how you drive.
I need to dust off my B234 sitting on a stand for years.
Well now I want one.
A/B test it with a stock manifold!
nice piece, but odd some of the choices they made, like they were planning on a lot smaller engine bay. at least the 16v doesn't have the plug problem between the runners
it fits a 240, so there is that
@@linuxman51 so does a stock turbo manifold - lots of room under the manifold not being used, runner #3 could have went under for better 8v plug clearance - but I'm just an armchair quarterback atm
You plan on making a pass or two on video?
need to eh? all these teaser videos and no substance
cool! nice to see one on a 16v head. curious how it fits in a 240 if you choose that path.
Idk if you have any gaskets in there but between both sets of manifold gaskets and the turbo gasket the timing belt clearance should get a little better, not much Obviously but something
I do not have gaskets in there, so that would move it out some.
Not a fan of the angle of the wastegate, definitely the opposite to where it needs to go.
What'd you throw at it?
tapped on the injectors, checked for spark, put a jump pack on it to get the cranking rpms up, and discovered the ignitor had gotten knocked loose. plugged that in and it fired right up.
Nice! She purrs like a kitten
Is that a stock 5.3? I got to get mine built and get it to you

@Kenny Howard Thanks. I'm hoping to get A Decent number with mine. But I don't know what the normal cammed 5.3 numbers are

next time, just recommendation, try to show other things while you talk. Pointless watching minutes of a screen, nothing else. Divide it on before and after, the rambling is migrainatic painful. I was buying into your findings, until description is selling their own intercoolers.
there's a short version of the video for that.
Dude you need some cats around that place.
Ah yes. The annual shuffling of the turd herd.
Great work!
Hi great video. Just changed my fluid. Any tips on how to seal the pan? No matter how much I try the thing still seaps at the corners a little.
this may help: www.5speeds.com/cart/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=101&search=doug+nash but in his videos he talks about using rtv or similar to seal the pans from the factory. I haven't filled this one yet (still working on this swap, getting down to crunch time) but hopefully it doesn't leak 😀
@@linuxman51 just be careful when you torque down the pan bolts. Those threads are so soft and strip out easily. In the case you do, you can use a longer bolt and catch the threads up in the case. I striped out 3 bolts.
Wouldn't it still be better than no intercooler at all?
that's subject to debate, probably not at the very low boost level this test was run at. I would like to verify (or deny) that, but I don't have any straight chunks of 3in piping laying around to do the test with.
I search eBay intercooler because, without having taken it out and thoroughly inspected it, I think I have a leak. I’m running a Borg Warner S475 and a fresh motor. It won’t build boost until about 4500 rpm.
Perhaps you and Greg could throw a deflector on one side of your eBay cooler and do a proof of concept?
we talked about it
the Bad Ass Lieutenant!
what are the specs what are the specs ?? Fan of Randy and fan of volvos ! Thank you Kenny!
it's fairly basic as far as engine mods go.. some lightish port work and chamber work, what is thought to be an early ipd cam (but who knows), b230f bottom end and a small t04e turbo
SICKKKKKKKK
Good video Kenny. More proof that testing is the only way to find quality information. The lesson here is the same as in cylinder heads: Air is heavy and does not want to turn corners. Can you link the Volvo/Ebay/Garrett video referenced? It's not obvious in your video list.
I thought we had a video for that test, here's the thread with all the pictures and what not. forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=358795&highlight=intercooler+test I'll dig around and see if I have any video, I think it might have been one of those I thought sam was doing it and he thought I was doing it kind of things, so no one did it
What turbo are you running here, stock 13c or something like 16t?
k24 from a v70r
Dude k cam in the grey 240 would pull to the moon . 😆 🤣 😂. I put a he341 on that thing it would pool through 6800. Had to limit it cause i knew it wouldn't live long.
More than I expected to be honest
I think it'll actually go up a bit as the tune comes around. I did not spend any time adjusting ignition timing for the ipd cam for the purposes of this test, so I imagine it'll pick up some more (how much? who knows, will do a video for that a little later). occasionally I hear what sounds like excessive lash on one, and I've got an oil leak in the top end to track down, so I'll go back in now that I'm not soaked and sweaty and check some things out and tidy it up a bit.
I was going to get a Garrett core and this seals the deal. That's an impressive difference. End tanks about the same?
no, the Garrett core benefits (possibly/probably greatly) from different end tanks that are more conducive to even distribution across the core. I have some ideas that I'm working on, I'll post a video when I get to the testing phase
@@linuxman51 looking forward to the results.
nice video !
Is your source for you wastegate before intercooler? Maybe that's why the wastegate sees more pressure than the manifold. If you want better tests try to measure pressure before and after intercooler.
certainly. also pre and post intercooler air temperature readings would be nice too.
@@linuxman51 so where is the wastegate source from, pre or post intercooler?
@@mihailpetrovici5044 it's mentioned in the video (I thought), compressor cover, so pre-intercooler.
@@linuxman51 didn't get it, thanks. So probably the intercooler is less eficient and that increase in 1-2 psi of pressure stacked before the intercooler opens the wastegate earlier
@@mihailpetrovici5044 that's what I was thinking as well
How could a better core work better if all the air only goes through 1/3rd of it? You can flip one of the end tanks to force the air to flow more evenly through the core. That's still not going to fix the issues of the flow having to turn 90 degrees and travel up the full height of the intercooler. You should borrow an IR camera for these tests.
If it'd been a more planned out test instead of the ad-hoc experiment-leads-to-test that it was, there are a couple of things I'd like to have done differenly... I would like pre and post intercooler map sensor readings, pre and post intercooler air temp readings (that aren't greatly skewed by the heatsoaking going on with the intake manifold), and like I said in the video, initially I didn't think about the end-tank design, however in an attempt to a) reconcile a false assertion and b) solve the issue both for my own edification and ultimately the customer's horse power goals. I have some ideas, I may see if I've got enough scrap stuff laying around to modify the other ebay intercooler (not the one used in the test, the one that was included as a talking point) re-shape how air enters and leaves it. the air going through is not just using the bottom 1/3rd, the top of the core was warm as well, but if one considers how air might flow through, I wouldn't expect significant airflow to go through the rest until the bottom 1/3 is essentially choked off. the resulting turbulence I imagine is what is creating a lot of this pressure drop
@@linuxman51 if you put an aluminum can in 1" of hot water the top will eventually get warm as the heat spreads through the can. The whole IC being warm is not necessarily an indication of the air flowing through the core. I would imagine you could maintain a steady engine load (airflow) and see a similar result
@@JohnDoe-mx1sq no doubt, for this though I didn't really leave them on the car for a ton of radiant heat to get spread around. regardless, from an airflow perspective these end tanks do leave a lot to be desired.
What diameter are all these cores?
the garrett core is just shy of 5 inches thick, the other two are roughly 3 inches thick, even though the one with smaller inlets looks narrower. I hacked it up for a quick(ish) and dirty(ish) end tank modification to see if my thought process is in the right place.
Great information Kenny. Thanks for sharing. Now it's time for me to get rid of that exact intercooler on my 2JZ setup..
You should do some weekend at the strip videos with some of these builds.
