Arriving at our Terminal Station | Geoff Shōun O'Keeffe
Dainin Katagiri Roshi wrote that “when you touch this basic nature of life, you feel relief. This is your final abode, your terminal station… a new life opens up, everywhere, in all directions.” As the Heart Sutra says “No hindrance in the mind, no hindrance, therefore no fear.” What would it be like to feel this kind of boundlessness and fearlessness? Is my life not open in all directions already? How is it not?

The Attitude of Continuous Practice | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Переглядів 2914 днів тому
There are many different attitudes or orientations that we might hold toward our life. In Buddhist practice, we see that the human condition creates a basic self-centered attitude which is unsatisfactory and causes suffering - this is the first noble truth. With continuous practice, or "Gyoji," as described by Master Dogen, there is a shift in the basic attitude towards our life. Norman Fischer...
The Great Heart Way: Working with Strong Feelings | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Переглядів 3921 день тому
How do we work with challenging feelings when they arise sadness, fear, anger, guilt and shame? It is common to want to avoid or push these feelings away. However, when we don’t identify with them, strong feelings are often a powerful doorway to non-dual consciousness. In this talk, Gyodo Sensei shares ways to work with these feelings in our Zen practice, including The Great Heart Way practice ...
Living by Vow | Geoff Shoun O'Keeffe
Переглядів 20Місяць тому
In the White Plum Zen lineage, we receive the sixteen Bodhisattva Vows when we formally commit to the Zen path in a Jukai ceremony. But making the intention to live by vows is available to all of us. They are practical, dynamic and applied differently in different circumstances. They are alive for us, all the time. Living by vow is lifelong. We never finish. We never once and for all “conquer” ...
Weeding the Weeds of Our Life | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Переглядів 40Місяць тому
Gyodo Sensei share reflections on the practice of weeding at our July retreat. As any gardener knows, weeds seem to continuously proliferate and we must take care of them or they will take over. What are the weeds of our life - the weeds on the inside? Our attachments - craving, aversion, ignorance - protective habits that produce suffering. When we take care of these weeds, we get to the root ...
Engaging with Life As It Is | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Переглядів 102Місяць тому
Zazen is simply being with life as it is. Without any need to change it, grasp after it, or figure it out. It isn’t a passive, however - in Zen, we see how we are actively engaged with our life AS life, which is endlessly, infinitely changing and fluid. It is also seamless; this infinite variety, which is our life, is one with unity. How do we experience this unity within differences? Can we le...
Surrender and Trust: Inflection Points on the Buddhist Path | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Переглядів 39Місяць тому
While we may find there is an organic unfolding of our path of practice in the dharma, there are often clear moments when we take a turn into a deeper commitment to practice. And other times where we are diverted from the path, like an eddy in the stream, not really growing or progressing. We can even disown our bodhisattva nature, which yearns to come alive. As we realize the unworkability of ...
Our Zen Paths | Geoff Shōun O'Keeffe, Lisa Gakyo Schaewe, Sam Sokyo Randall

All of us come to practice through unique doorways based in our karma, and no two paths are alike, some straighter, many circuitous. As Ram Dass said, "We're all just walking each other home." Eon Zen Senior practice leaders share their own paths into Zen practice, followed by questions and discussion.
Sesshin Practice | Geoff Shōun O'Keeffe
Переглядів 462 місяці тому
Dharma holder Geoff Shōun O'Keeffe offers reflections on practice during our June Sesshin. What is it that we do together in retreat? It may seem like not much is happening, but it is utterly extraordinary. We practice appreciating every moment, painful and pleasant. We strip away complexity and distraction and create an intentional space where we can just be. And meet ourselves just as we are....
Mosquitos, Allergies, and The Great Way | Lisa Gakyo Schaewe
Переглядів 322 місяці тому
Eon Zen Senior Student and Practice Leader Lisa Gakyo Schaewe offers a talk on the transformative practice of facing our life just as it is. As humans, we often face times when we wish circumstances were different. As Zen practitioners, we make vows to not turn away. Can we expand our view and see that the very things that seem like obstacles are the path that everything is perfect and complete...
Disowned Selves | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Переглядів 422 місяці тому
In Zen we talk a lot about no self - but what is this no self? It points to the reality that there is no "fixed" self. We actually have many selves, perhaps an infinite number of internal perspectives, all co-existing. Some, perhaps, in conflict with others. When we disown or deny some of those voices, it can create a lot of disfunction. Working with vows can be helpful to see what we might be ...
Homeleaving and Homecoming | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Переглядів 443 місяці тому
Gyodo Sensei explores a passage from Hongzhi's Cultivating the Empty Field on leaving home: "Face Everything, Let Go, Attain Stability." When we truly leave home in the deepest sense, letting go of the attachments and habits of our conditioning, we come home to our life. How do we live our life freely, not following conditions, and not turning away from them either?
Wild Cats and White Bulls | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Переглядів 413 місяці тому
In this talk, Gyodo Sensei share a passage from Hongzhi's Cultivating the Empty Field titled “ The Practice of True Reality.” The practice of true reality is to be present with true reality, even when we face hardship or adversity. To throw ourself so completely into our experience, into our hardship, that hardship disappears. When we resist adversity, we end up reinforcing that adversity - and...

Eon Zen Dharma Holder Geoff Shōun O'Keeffe shares about the Three Tenets of Zen Peacemakers: not-knowing (not holding onto ideas or positions) bearing witness (not turning away), and taking action that arises from not-knowing and bearing witness. He offers Roshi Eve Marko's recent reflections on the violence and fear in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine as a profound practice of...
Not Getting Stuck Anywhere: The Wisdom of Non-Abiding | Paul Gyodo Agostinelli Sensei
Переглядів 1044 місяці тому
The antidote for the poison of ignorance of delusion is wisdom, or clear seeing into our true nature. But this wisdom is not something you can attain - and there is no shortcut. It arises as embodied experience through the practice of not-knowing or not-abiding in anything. Including not abiding in not-abiding. No one to abide. No one to not-abide. Not getting stuck anywhere.

I suppose that was how I came by my own state of mindfulness. I was faced with a situation (albeit a bizarre one) that I could not escape that was so harrowing that if I didn't learn to manage the sheer existential dread it would have broken me. And although I lost that state of mindfulness as the existential dread faded and I fell into a sort of denial, I found that the mindful state I was in made me a better person so I came back to it.

Thank you for the apt review and the practical application of Nancy Baker's book through your personal life stories. I so appreciate your honest and deep sharing in this very public platform. I'm reminded how "intimate" Not Knowing truly is. Because of your sharing, I'm inclined to check out Nancy's book, "Opening to Oneness." I also recommend "Freedom Wherever We Go," by Thich Nhat Hanh. It was on my recommended reading list for the Spiritual Formation class I taught.

Wow, Sigman I loved listening to you, especially after not hearing your voice for so many years. I share some of your experiences as an adjunct instructor at the Community College of Vermont for over 30 years. I also struggle with the anger and resentment I sometimes feel towards the college. I know that adjuncts all over the country struggle with their 2nd/3rd class status and treatment. I'd love to talk with you about it sometime.

Shishin Wick was the head of the White Plum Sangha, and the man who, a few years ago publicly promised to support those hurt and impacted by the abuses of Dennis Merzel, who calls himself Genpo Roshi and was his predecessor as head of the Sangha, before being forced to step down when his abuses were exposed. In private however, in emails that have now been released, Wick made clear to actual students of Merzel's that he wasn't prepared to actually support anyone and that it was all just PR. Shameful and disgusting.

Good to hear this. So sad though that Zen Peacemakers have become such a grift, serving mostly the older, white and wealthy in recent years. Most on any rez, wouldn't be able to afford to do any of the events that ZP do.
