    Nice, I’m learning how to melt, any tips on making sure it’s pure .999 copper before pouring?

    • @Scrap2Cast
      @Scrap2Cast 17 днів тому

      @@Justaguyinthecornerofthescreen it wont ever become .999 due to the impurities in the crucible. The closest I got was 99.21% pure when I had my scrapyard zap the bars. The only thing I can recommend is using a bit of borax to help separate the impurities from the metal and scoop it out prior to pouring.

    • @Justaguyinthecornerofthescreen
      @Justaguyinthecornerofthescreen 17 днів тому

      @ okay, would you say with good practice you could achieve .98 consistently? Considering melting but as a perfectionist I will shoot for highest purity for resale value

    • @Scrap2Cast
      @Scrap2Cast 17 днів тому

      @ absolutey you can consistently get that result. Just be sure to never ever melt anything but copper in that crucible. Other metals will cross contaminate like if you melted brass or aluminum in that crucible that you plan on using to melt copper. I always bought different crucibles for different metals.

    I use a vise as a third hand. Separating twisted strands without curling and binding is tricky. I figured a way with the help of a vice and cutting the cords into manageable lengths.

    • @Scrap2Cast

      Personally when I strip wire, I prefer to keep it the original length rather than multiple smaller pieces. But there is really no wrong way to strip wire 🙂

    I've been getting into brass casting myself 😊. This might come across slightly odd, I'm genuinely curious.... You mentioned casting a new set of tongs out of bronze, will you be able to use them on the crucible, considering you're 1100°C and higher at the base and that heat transfer during a pour? Interesting to know because I've been keen to have more control on my setup during a lift and pour, I had assumed it would need to be iron or steel to use?

      Yes they will be fine to use. The tong material will be pretty thick so it wont really melt on contact.

      The unit had a pinhole in the ACR prior to me picking it up off the side of the road. All the freon was depleted before I started tearing it down.

    I like the video and been scraping and making bars but no local scrap yards will buy them even with a video of me melting wire and they have a metal analyzer they said there buyer won’t take it and I can’t sell it on marketplace so I have just been keeping it in 5 gallon buckets for now

    • @Scrap2Cast
      @Scrap2Cast 5 місяців тому

      You can sell them on eBay for a higher profit if you want to go that route. If you have a large supply of them, you can look into working directly with a foundry and see if you can unload them that way. Personally I would only melt down #2 copper and sell your #1 copper as-is.
