Cow-nosed ray aggregation, Evans Head.
Huge aggregations of cow-nosed rays have been reported in the ocean off NSW Australia earlier in 2021. I videoed these in Evans estuary 20 years ago. There were several hundred in this school, but there were countless [hundreds of thousands, extending over kilometers in area] just offshore. Some of the old commercial fishermen said they had seen similar aggregations, but decades before. It's not known how, or why, rays from a vast area of Australia aggregate like this.

Magnetic Island coral reefs & wreck.
Переглядів 1543 роки тому
Its now the end of the Wet Season, and the sea is beginning to clear around Magnetic Island. I've been monitoring the recovery of Geoffrey Bay corals since the major coral bleaching episode Feb-March 2020 but its been too dirty to dive for the last 6-8 weeks. Fortunately this summer (2021) the ocean was a la Nina [a cooler/rainy cycle] and there was very little coral bleaching. The large 'bommi...

Magnetic Island: tidal rhythms
Переглядів 2263 роки тому
I've always been fascinated by the tides, and the pull of the moon and sun on the sea. [I even did my PhD research on 'tidal rhythms']. During 'spring 'extreme low tides where the gravity pull of the sun and moon coincide, much of Magnetic Island's fringing reef is exposed. I took this little video at Arthur Bay last winter of tidal rhythms on coral reefs.
Moltke wreck Magnetic Island
Переглядів 3713 роки тому
Yesterday's snorkel on the wreck of the big German iron barque Moltke was teeming with fish. I snorkel on the surface and use a long 'selfie' stick [a 2-3 m long extendable painter's pole] to reach the bottom, and get close to the fish which would be scared by a diver. The vis was not good and I couldn't see what I was videoing most of the time. 9 Feb 2021.
Ocean wonderers. Man-o-war, by-the-wind sailors & purple snails.

This video is about the animals which sail along the surface of the open ocean [neuston]. The best known are the blue hydrozoans, the venomous Portuguese man-o-war [Physalia]; the blue sea button [Porpita]; the by-the-wind sailor [Velella] which are each a colony of separate individual organisms. It also shows their predators, the blue dragon nudibranch [Glaucus], and the beautiful sailing viol...

Fabulous Florence Bay coral reef, Magnetic Island
Переглядів 3403 роки тому
Magnetic Island, an inshore island in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, is fringed with a number of coral reefs. The most pristine is in Florence Bay, facing the open sea in the east. I dive there often, and on this occasion I take some new friends, a charming French/Vietnamese couple, for whom I am posting this short video.
Cooper Zann. AWESOME. My first trip to the 'Reef.
Переглядів 1383 роки тому
This video is about my grandson Cooper's first trip to the Great Barrier Reef on his Dad's boat. It's a special day, December 23, the summer equinox and planet convergence. We see a pod of 5-6 rare Dwarf mini whales, some with calves. Then a huge pod of tiny spinner dolphins which swim with us. Schools of leaping Bonito tuna. Beautiful coral, and inquisitive reef sharks. We didn't catch many fi...
Gigari: the flight of the Black cockatoo
Переглядів 2463 роки тому
The spectacular Red-tailed black cockatoo [Gigari] visits Magnetic Island [Yunbenun] in north Queensland to feast on the native almond. They are large, rather clumsy birds, and are normally slow and steady in flight. This video celebrates the life - and spirit - of my recently dead friend [whose name cannot be said, as custom dictates], a Walgarukaba ['the canoe people'], whose clan are the tra...
Barra for dinner.
Переглядів 843 роки тому
Barramundi are big inshore predators in Northern Australia, and great eating and hard-fighting sports fish. However, its rare to see them while diving as they normally live in muddy mangrove waters. This morning I was amazed to find four big barramundi at high tide in the mangroves at Magnetic Island [previous post 'Barra for breakfast']. Later in the day, at low tide, I found the same four fis...
Barramundi for breakfast.
Переглядів 443 роки тому
I love snorkeling Magnetic Island's mangroves in the early morning at spring high tides and clear water to catch the dawn run of fish. This morning [Australia Day, 2021] at 7am, as the sun rose over the hills I was met by four big barramundi, the iconic Australian sports fish. And I always keep an eye out for crocs and box jellyfish.
FIJI ODYSSEY: 1. CORAL SPAWNING AT ROYAL DAVUI
Переглядів 2354 роки тому
This video is about annual CORAL SPAWNING at Royal Davui Resort in the Fiji Islands. Each year, on a certain couple of magical nights (depending on the month, moon phase, tides and temperature), corals, and some other reef species, have a mass spawning, filling the sea with their spawn. The Fijians knew this, and traditionally named the months of October and November after the spawning of the b...

After studying coral and balolo spawning, I am invited on a fishing trip on the deepwater slopes (depths to 1000 m) and pinnacles (rising to 350 m) with brothers Grahame and Bruce Southwick. Fiji-born Graham is a professional fisherman who pioneered deepwater bottom fish and pelagic tuna fisheries in Fiji. I first studied Nautilus and other deepwa...

Dear Leon, I am an early-career researcher at UQ, and I have just received a small grant to study 'Reef grief'. I was wondering if it would be possible to use part of your video, to show the effects of coral bleaching to research participants. My email is c.benham@uq.edu.au if you would like to get in touch about this. Best wishes, Claudia Benham

It's a relief to see la Nina has provided a reprieve at least and the stress of the hot/wet season has given way to gentler warm/dry season conditions. Thanks for this update Leon 👍

A fine tribute. I've heard these cockatoos fly to Magnetic Island to feast and then return to their home on the Palm Islands to nest, but I'm not sure if this is so.

Great video Leon, I dived Geoffrey and Alma on Sunday and was shocked by the level of bleaching and coral mortality. It’s heartbreaking. You should share this on the Magnetic Island locals facebook page, shocks me how many locals have no idea of the extent to which this is occurring around the island (and across the GBR) and think this is just usual “seasonal bleaching”.

Hi, thanks. I just saw your before and after. Yes, its serious , and many other parts of the GBR are bleaching. Even the offshore Coral Sea reefs. I'm in Florida now, and can't monitor my sites, but will see when/if I get back. regards

Some are saying that this is caused by dredge dumping. Could that be a contributor?

    • @leonzann5962
      @leonzann5962 4 роки тому

No. Bleaching is also beginning in many other parts of the Great Barrier Reef (not subject to dredge dumping). It was predicted by the US NOAA which monitors world ocean temps. There is a 'marine heat wave' (ocean temp around the island is now 32 degrees C (and hotter in the shallows). It is almost certainly climate-change related.

@@LoseWeightTips On further reflection, maybe the dredging has placed some background stress on Magnetic Island corals, making them more susceptible to temperature bleaching. The Arthur Bay reef is less affected by dredging and the terrestrial runoff from Townsville. But the major stress is certainly the hot ocean mass.
